Local Target Audience Age Group: 20+ Gender: not specified Personality: Explorative Objective To exploit a Local Book for visitors when visiting St Louis. A phone application will be available for the visitor to download onto their touch screen phone.
Problem A woman and man are visiting a city [for this project I plan to reference St Louis Missouri] and have no direction to seek out the local boutiques and independent restaurants that the city has to offer. They are looking to experience the culture rather than getting involved with the hordes of tourists taking numerous pictures at overrated sites such as the St. Louis Gateway Arch or the Anheuser Busch Brewery. They would like a convenient direction to help guide them to the urban scene and culture but are unsure how to locate a source for a quick reference. Overall, I would like to give the lowdown on the most authentic, unique and inspiring, locally owned eating and shopping spots in St Louis Missouri by creating a local book that’s distributed at the neighborhood kiosks convenience of a touch screen phone application. Design Intent The local book will be organized by neighborhoods, listing local boutiques and independent restaurants. Before each neighborhood will be an illustrated map that identifies the locations of the businesses. At the back of the book, I plan to have an area for one to write down his or her experiences and make notes. There will be a St Louis local application that is available for touch screen phones to provide the opportunity to research local boutiques and independent restaurants in St Louis.
Research Methodology I will continue researching and studying the boutiques and independent restaurants in St Louis, Missouri. To start, I will sit at restaurant patios to experience the environment that a local restaurant offers. I will continue chatting with the owners at the retail counters on their vision for their boutique. I’ve received some feedback from the owners who have mentioned other cool boutiques to check out that might be of interest. I plan to check out the suggested boutiques this week. I determined my communication strategy by figuring the steps that were needed in order to design and execute a local book and phone application for one visiting St Louis, Missouri. I performed my written out process, in step by step detail, in what I call a cartoon sketch. Personally, my cartoon sketches help me organize my ideas and design layout and basically help me with my thought process. I also posted my design proposal on the discussion board to see if everyone followed my thought process. I did receive one particular suggestion for having a website and email list. I will investigate this suggestion a bit further to see if a local book website is efficient enough for visitors during their short stay in a city. I also want to research email further since I want to avoid creating junk mail clutter in one’s email box after they visit a city. Over the next week(s)I also plan to further research and investigate what different neighborhoods have to offer to make sure this book provides something for everyone. I plan to study book sizes and layouts to make sure my book design encourages one to pick it up.
Print + Screen + Experimental
Communication Strategy + Design Outcome I feel the local book and application are great references for one to have as a resource while visiting St Louis, Missouri. I feel every city should have a local book that allows one to experience the urban scene and culture that gives the low down on what is cool and what is not. I plan to have the books distributed at local hotels and businesses for easy access. It also allows one the opportunity to download a St Louis local application onto a touch screen phone. Overall, I feel that my design goals were accomplished for this design project with the local book, phone application and the neighborhood kiosks. I feel that my design process was exemplified at a superior level while illustrating my design principles with an extraordinary expertise. I want visitors to remember the great experiences they had visiting the most authentic, unique and inspiring, locally owned eating and shopping spots in St Louis so at the end of the trip they feel their time was well spent in St Louis, Missouri and was not merely caught up in the touristy scenes.

About the Story To the right are a few possible solutions for the Local Book which also serves as inspiration. I also would like for this page to help explain the design story and problem. When one visits St Louis, he or she wants to experience the culture, not the overrated tourist attractions. It is nice to have a book that mentions unknown attractions to those new to the city. I feel in order for the book to be picked up, it needs to have some sort of graphic or color that catches one’s eye. I feel that the book materials on this page are suggestions to help explain the design intent.

Organization of Neighborhoods The Local Book and phone application reference particular neighborhoods within St. Louis. These neighborhoods offer great culture and exquisite atmosphere, providing a secret that not every visitor might discover. Each neighborhood is identified with a designated color and typeface design that best defines its style and personality. Within each neighborhood are local boutiques, independent restaurants, and unique atmospheres that not every city offers. Each local business will have an identity emblem on their storefront that matches up with the same business on the neighborhood map in the local book. Each neighborhood section in the Local Book will list the entrepreneur’s business location, website, a glimpse of their menu or product, and a taste of their independent atmosphere.

Organization of Neighborhoods Mentioned in the Local Book are the neighborhoods that share the road with bikers as well as areas for free street parking or metered parking. Also designated is the culture per College Crowd, Modern Elegant, or Eclectic with a Laid Back feel due to visitors’ preference for neighborhood atmosphere.

PRINT: Concept One
Exemplifies a logo profile that illustrates balance, scale, and positive + negative space. Could be utilized as a die cut form or a solid color. Have 3 examples of how the logo coincides with the panel design for the local book. The proportional L logo is exemplified in a successful manner on the panel designs. The logo has the opportunity to be a minimal statement on the exterior panel design or the entire statement that leads the panel design.
PRINT: Concept Three
Exemplifies a retro style logo with a nice proportional placement within the circle. The L is a simplified version of Local and is a nice statement that Local does not need to be illustrated everywhere throughout the Local Book. This logo is successful at balancing the die cut panel with similar die cut forms that are the same size as the logo. The logo design would really pop or stand out in a design that is exemplified in this manner. The L logo would also work well to replicate the form of a button in order to provide a unique form on a minimal panel design.
PRINT: Concept Four PRINT: Concept Two
Shown is a simplified version of the Local logo. The profile of L is the only message that is illustrated in order to keep the tone of the book minimal and timeless. The L profile is an excellent form to exemplify a positive + negative balance and proportional form. This logo could possibly take the form of the entire panel design and would be a nice conversation piece for one on the simplicity the design would bring to the local book.
Shown is the concept of an interactive piece of an inner book inside the exterior panel book design. On the inner left panel is a placement holder for bus tickets or receipts that one might obtain while adventuring in a city. The interactive booklet that describes the local attributes is on the right side of the inner booklet design. The entire booklet design is made of chipboard with minimal use of color on the exterior but the interior booklet exploits color at a superior balanced level.

WHAT IS COLOR? “Color derives from the spectrum of light interacting in the eye with the spectral sensitivities of the light receptors. Color categories and physical specifications of color are also associated with objects, materials, light sources, etc., based on their physical properties such as light absorption, reflection, or emission spectra. By defining a color space, colors can be identified numerically by their coordinates.” -David Johnson

WHAT IS BLUE? “Blue is the color of the sky and the ocean, blue is one of the most popular colors. It causes the opposite reaction as red. Peaceful, tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, so it is often used in bedrooms. Blue can also be cold and depressing. Fashion consultants recommend wearing blue to job interviews because it symbolizes loyalty. People are more productive in blue rooms. Studies show weight lifters are able to handle heavier weights in blue gyms.” -David Johnson

33
WHAT IS GREEN? “Currently the most popular decorating color, green symbolizes nature. It is the easiest color on the eye and can improve vision. It is a calming, refreshing color. Green symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, & fertility. Dark green is masculine, conservative, and implies wealth.” -David Johnson
+COLOR: GREEN Represents The Loop in St. Louis Digital
35
WHAT IS YELLOW? “Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter. While it is considered an optimistic color, people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused.Yellow enhances concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism.” -David Johnson
+COLOR: YELLOW Represents Soulard in St. Louis

37
WHAT IS ORANGE? Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation. To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Nevertheless, orange is not as aggressive as red.
+COLOR: ORANGE Represents Lafayette Square in St. Louis Digital
39
WHAT IS RED?
“The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is also the color of love. Red clothing gets noticed and makes the wearer appear heavier. Since it is an extreme color, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars are popular targets for thieves. In decorating, red is usually used as an accent. Decorators say that red furniture should be perfect since it will attract attention.” -David Williams
+COLOR: RED Represents Clayton in St. Louis Digital
41
WHAT IS PURPLE? “The color of royalty, purple connotes luxury, wealth, and sophistication. It is also feminine and romantic. However, because it is rare in nature, purple can appear artificial.” -David Williams
+COLOR: PURPLE Represents Central West End in St. Louis Digital

WHAT IS TYPOGRAPHY? “The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading [line spacing], adjusting the spaces between groups of letters [tracking] and adjusting the space between pairs of letters [kerning] Type design is a closely related craft, which some consider distinct and others a part of typography; most typographers do not design typefaces, and some type designers do not consider themselves typographers.” -Wikipedia

Designed at the Monotype foundry’s in-house design studio in 1934. The original Rockwell was produced by the Inland typefoundry in 1910, which issued it as Litho Antique; American Type Founders revived the face in the 1920s, with Morris Fuller Benton cutting several new weights. The Monotype Corporation produced its version of Rockwell in 1934; unfortunately, some of the literature erroneously referred to it as Stymie Bold, thereby creating confusion that still exists today. Rockwell is a geometric slab serif design, a strong display face for headlines and posters; it is also legible in short text blocks.
Designer: Adrian Frutiger The design is a neo-grotesque, similar to its contemporary, Helvetica. Linotype also has adopted this numerical system for many other faces. The family has the advantage of having a variety of weights and styles, which, even when combined, give an impression of steadiness and homogeneity. Their legibility lends itself to a large variety of apps, from text and headlines to packaging and signage.
The reason I selected Jenkins v2.0 is due to it’s originality that fits in with the style of the Local Book. It has an urban, loose feel to it that tends to blend and balance with any Adobe Type. Download free from fontstock.net

Designer: Linotype Staff The letters DIN refer to the Deutsche Industrie-Norm, the German Industrial Standard; among their many uses, these typefaces are seen on most road signs and license plates in what was formerly West Germany. One of the primary criteria for the DIN Schriften design was a facility for reproduction. There are four geometric sans serif typefaces, of roughly the same weight but of various widths, from quite round to condensed. Use DIN Schriften for signage, posters, and display work that emanates a neo-1990s look. 10/11 Din 1451 Engschrift
Designer: John Scheppler Orator is a monospaced typeface made up of capitals and small capitals only; it can be used for tabular material or technical documentation. The name Orator comes from the notion that capitals and small capitals are clearer than upper and lowercase letters, thus making it useful
for speech notes. It was designed for IBM typewriters by John Scheppler. 10/11 Orator

Closing: The local book is a great reference for one to have as a resource upon their visit in St Louis Missouri. I feel every city should have a local book that allows one to experience the urban scene and culture that gives the lowdown on what is cool and what is not. I plan to have the books distributed at kiosks throughout the city and local hotels. There will also be a phone application that allows one to download it onto their touch screen phone. Overall, I want one to remember the great experience they had while visiting the most authentic, unique, locally owned eating and shopping spots in St Louis Missouri. So at the end of one’s trip they feel their time was well spent and not caught up in the touristy scenes.

LAFAYETTESQUARE: Lafayette Square is a reminder of Victorian St. Louis in its most flamboyant years, the last quarter of the 19th century. Lafayette Park is the focal point of the Square, a last link to the little French settlement of 1764. It is an extension of the St. Louis Commons which was reserved for public use as pasture and farm land in the European tradition. It remains the only land within the city never under private ownership.A Historic Code preserves the neighborhood for future generations to see PARKING: Free Parking, Drivers share the road with bikers. SAFETY: Very safe and neighborly. Everyone says hello when you pass them on the sidewalk.

Analysis The Local Book is a great reference for one to have as a resource upon their visit to St. Louis, Missouri. I feel every city should have a local book that allows one to experience the urban scene and culture that gives the lowdown on what is cool and what is not. The books will be distributed at kiosks throughout the neighborhoods. As a green resource, a phone application will be available to download for visitors who don’t wish to receive a Local Book.
Overall, I want visitors to remember the great experience they had when visiting authentic, unique, locally owned eating and shopping spots in St Louis, Missouri. I want them to remember the trip as time well spent instead of feeling caught up in the touristy scenes. My cartoon set kept me focused on researching, developing and executing my design process. Overall, I really enjoyed having the opportunity to explore this design avenue over the past few weeks. I passionately enjoy experimenting with color identities, page layouts, interior environments and analyzing which typeface sets the tone for the overall feel to the compositions.

Soulard is one of the oldest parts of the city with homes dating from the mid to late 1800s. About 1840, the growing city of St Louis reached south into the “Frenchtown” area, a mix of common fields and French-owned farms. With urbanization encroaching, various French town landowners hired surveyors to stake out streets, alleys and sellable lots, to continue the traditional urban grid.

The intentional concept of the book, is to guide one when visiting an unknown city to help seek our the local boutiques and independent restaurants that a city has to offer. This book will convey some thing more, something that allows one to experience the culture rather getting involved with the overrated camera tourists taking numerous pictures of a famous installation art sculpture or the typical food chain restaurants within a city. This book will provide a convenient direction, a quick reference, to help lead them to the urban scene and culture.

Barcelona pride themselves in creating a traditional authentic Tapas Bar atmosphere. This includes their warm decor and the traditional hanging of Serrano hams and dried bacalaos. Their service reflects a traditional tapas experience as you might find in Madrid, Barcelona or Sevilla. Tapas style service means that food is prepared to order and delivered to the table plates at a time. Enjoy the authentic tapas and sangria.

makes me laugh. Hidden down the corner in an unsuspecting lit room, is this delicious little Korean bbq place. But don’t get your hopes up for a dining experience, just get your grub on! Décor: It’s a tiny place, seats probably a max of 15 people. The majority of seating is in a bartop area and there is like one table that seats four people pushed into the corner.

The local book is a great reference for one to have as a resource upon their visit in St Louis Missouri. I feel every city should have a local book that allows one to experience the urban scene and culture that gives the lowdown on what’s cool and what’s not. The local books are distributed at kiosks throughout the neighborhoods. There is a phone application that allows one to download it onto their touch screen phone.

So began the adventure that culminated with opening of Vin de Set in the summer of 2006 at the restored Centennial Malt House at 2017 Chouteau Avenue. Keeping with the theme of restaurant names, Vin de Set is the phonetic spelling of the French number “vingt dix-sept”, 2017 the address. Vin de Set puts a decidedly American twist on a French bistro in a way that is both comfortable and inviting.

PERSONA: This quaint little neighborhood is loaded with great spots to relax. With a beautiful park, a nice selection of bars and restaurants and several neat little shops, it feels like your miles away from downtown, when in fact, you’re just minutes away.
Lafayette Square is a reminder of an extravagant Victorian St. Louis in its most flamboyant years, the last quarter of the 19th century. Lafayette Park is the focal point of the Square, a last link to the little French settlement of 1764. It is an extension of the St. Louis Commons which was reserved for public use as pasture and farm land in the European tradition. It remains the only land within the city never under private ownership. A Historic Code preserves the neighborhood for future generations to see and enjoy. PARKING: Free Parking. The entire neighborhood supports biker friendly lanes.

To the right are a few possible solutions for the Local Book which also serves as inspiration. I also would like for this page to help explain the design story and problem. When one visits St Louis, he or she wants to experience the culture, not the overrated tourist attractions. It is nice to have a book that mentions unknown attractions to those new to the city. I feel in order for the book to be picked up, it needs to have some sort of graphic or color that catches one’s one eye. I feel that the book materials on this page are suggestions to help explain the design intent.
