Summer is here at long last and so are the school holidays. Before you start to panic, we have lots to keep the children entertained as well as the adults. There are farmers’ markets, craft fairs along with lots of Shakespeare. There’s Bard In The Botanics while Cottiers Theatre is putting on a production of Coriolanus. Kevin Bridges talks to us prior to his sell out shows at the SECC about his life in the West End - highly amusing. Little SoHo has a great night out up for grabs and Wee Sally has an aromatic massage to giveaway with Glasgow-inspired oils! As for me, I’m off to pastures new and the lovely Noreen is taking my place. I have loved every minute of West End Life and would like to thank you for your support and especially for the banter on Twitter. I hope you offer the same support and enthusiasm to Noreen as she takes West End Life to new heights.

at home with..Kevin Bridges Stand-up comedian Kevin Bridges, 25, has enjoyed a hit BBC series this year, a DVD that outsold Billy Connolly and his massive UK tour kicks off in September, but here the funnyman tells Katrina Tweedie his big break came in the West End.

Kat: How did you get into stand-up?

Kat: What’s it like being successful and famous now?

Kevin: I’ve always been daft and wanted to turn my daftness into something creative but I was never in a comedy club until I performed at The Stand, which was my first ever venue. I was also 17 so I’d never been anywhere to watch live stand-up before.

Kevin: I’ve bought a pad in the West End, which came with a built-in coffee maker, so I really must have hit the Big Time. But I never drank coffee until now. I thought I’d better drink coffee or I’m losing money so I took up drinking double espressos – been watching too many Sopranos.

Kat: You must have a soft spot for The Stand? Kevin: I still do a Sunday warm up, trying out stuff for my tour, and I even go in for a pint sometimes on my way back from other shows as I know all the staff.

12

Kat: What’s your house like and have you had an ‘empty’ (a house party made famous in Kevin’s routine). Kevin: I moved into the apartment in Hyndland last June but there was nothing there and it took about 12 weeks for the furniture to arrive. The first thing I did was buy a big telly - I think I’ve watched MTV cribs too often – and I sat in front of it on my deckchair from ASDA. Yes, I’ve had a few ‘empties’. I think we warmed the house for about three months – we roasted it in fact!

www.westendlife.biz

@westendlife

Kat: What else has fame brought you? Kevin: I’m always getting stopped now, although it’s never a hassle. People ask for a picture but no-one knows how to work a camera phone. They end up asking a 60-year-old guy passing to take the picture and I think ‘here we go, this will be a video’. But everyone’s always nice so I don’t mind. Kat: Do you get on with the neighbours? Kevin: A few have mentioned their nerves about coming up in routines but I don’t think my nearest neighbour knows what I do. I think she see’s a young guy in a flat and thinks I must be a drug dealer. Kat: Do people expect you to be funny all the time? Kevin: You get the ‘tell me a joke’ or ‘say something funny’ often. Or I’ll order two pints at the bar and hear the barman say ‘that wasn’t very funny’. Kat: You have said Frank Skinner was a big inspiration. From where else do you get inspiration? Kevin: I don’t get influenced by an area and most of the stuff I write is when I’m travelling; sitting on a plane or train or daydreaming. I’d never seen stand-up until I performed myself, then I began watching much more, like Richard Prior, who I think is great, but Bill Burr is my favourite stand-up.

www.westendlife.biz

Kat: What are the nicest things people say to you? Kevin: A few people say they started comedy because they’d seen me. That’s brilliant and humbling. A couple of guys told me they decided to try stand-up because of me. That’s a bit ‘whoa!’ I never thought I’d see the day. Kat: Do you like the parks or museums in the West End? Kevin: I’ve never been a park person. I don’t know how people can relax in parks. I’d feel like a creep. I’ve been to Kelvingrove Art Gallery once. I try to do something cultured every now and then, but in end up bored and going to a café, eating burger and chips and reading the Daily Record. But I try my best. Kat: So are you into the West End café culture? Kevin: I can’t sit in cafes and write. I feel self-conscious and I always wonder what people are up to in a cafe. They’re obviously not unemployed because they’re spending about £4 for a coffee

@westendlife

Things I love most about the West End: • The Stand Always a favourite. My Sunday afternoon slot or Red Raw on a Tuesday night when you can watch beginners. • Little Italy, Byres Road For pizza or double espresso, now that I drink coffee. • The Lismore, Partick For a few drinks with my mates. • Oran Mor For Sunday afternoon drinks and I’ve had a few gigs there too. • The Landsdown Bar Where we normally go for lunch after the Sunday show. 13

foodfellas..Crabby Macs

Crabby Macs 61 Otago St, Glasgow G12 8PQ Tel: 0141 337 2282 thepartnersrestaurants.co.uk

There’s something fishy going on in the West End... Shelling out for dinner is a pleasure when the food is this good!

Foodfellas’ verdict .. Quality ★★★★★ Service ★★★★★ Value ★★★★★ Cost of 2 people having lunch, 2 courses, including wine was £98. 14

In my line of business, when you spend all day helping people sleep with the fishes the last thing you want to do is eat the fishes too. Sometimes, though, a change is as good as a rest so when the dear lady (I call her the Godmother) suggested dinner, I thought we’d try out Crabby Macs – a little, out-of-the-way seafood bistro on Otago Street. It helps to have somewhere off the beaten track because the dear lady is someone else’s dear lady too, if you get what I mean. From starters of crab cakes, scallops, oak smoked salmon and king prawns, to mains of seabass, Thai seafood curry and lobster we opted to try a bit of everything with the Grilled Seafood Platter. Langoustines, mussels and the potted crab thermidor all added to

the impressive fare. The plate so large in fact that we had to move from our romantic table for two at the window. We were too late for lunch and too early for dinner but the atmosphere was welcoming and friendly with attentive and friendly staff. Judging by the size of the dear lady’s diamond ring, they were probably hoping for a decent tip. (Tip: if you see an Italian with a violin case, run away fast). A bottle of rose blush Pinot Grigio complimented our lunch, available by the glass too from a balanced and affordable wine list. A slightly disappointing raspberry vanilla panacotta for dessert was the only downside on an otherwise perfect meal. People have gone below the waves for less, but I’ll let it pass this time.

Brian Maule Smoked Salmon with Capers, Herbs, Cream Cheese and Seasonal Leaves

Ingredients (Serves 4): 6-8 slices of smoked salmon 1 small bunch dill Small tub cream cheese Double cream

50g capers 3-4 shallots 1 bunch chives 1 packet leaves Lemon juice Vinaigrette Salt and pepper

1: Put the cream cheese in to a bowl and mix with a spoon to soften. 2: Add a little double cream, and mix well until you achieve a smooth coating consistency - but still firm enough to quenelle (see below). 3: Once the consistency is correct, peel and chop the shallots and finely chop most of the chives (leaving a few chives to for the garnish). Add both the shallots and the chives to the cream cheese mixture before seasoning.

4: Pick, wash and dry the salad leaves, and chop the remaining chives for the garnish. Also pick a few dill sprigs. 5: When dressing the plate take your pre-sliced smoked salmon and place on the bottom of the plate. 6: Place the seasonal leaves and quenelled cream cheese mixture over and around the smoked salmon and add a little vinaigrette to the salad. Drizzle with capers and add a few chopped chives and the sprigs of dill. Enjoy!

How to Make a Quenelle A quenelle turns a standard ‘scoop’ into an elegant serving of your choice, and is a more refined shape suitable for fine dining or a dinner party. The method for making quenelles is quite simple, but can require practice: Take a bowl of your intended mixture and scoop some out with a metal spoon. Take an identical spoon and scoop the garnish out from the first one. Try to follow the shape of the bottom spoon as much as possible. Continue to move from spoon to spoon until you have a smooth result (see photo above). It may also help to dip each spoon in warm water between scoops.

Brian opened the doors of his Glasgow fine dining restaurant, Chardon D’or in 2001, bringing his international reputation for preparing some of Europe’s best food with him.

fitness..clubs & classes It’s that age-old battle, enjoying life or doing exercise and losing a few pounds. Here, Westender Ginny tries to combine the two. Since I last wrote two major earth shattering events have occurred. Not only did I turn 49 (eek) but I went to my first exercise class at the Western Gym on Hyndland Road. Kettlercise was the name of the torture that myself and few plucky others endured, 50 minutes of fun, dripping sweat, swinging weights and trying not to thump the person next to you. Even GymGuyMark joined in, hiding at the back! The old legs and arms were pushed to the limit but they survived and by the time you read this I will be on my second or third class, or in the other Western. No grapes please! The next day I was in agony but thanks to the skills and oils of Rae from Napiers those aches and pains were soon soothed away. Massage or reflexology sessions do wonders for tired, gym’d out limbs. After all exercise is hard work and we all deserve a wee reward now and again. So mine is a G and T and here’s hoping I see 50! Till the next time and good luck in the Wee Sally competition Follow me on Twitter @ ginorgym, Facebook Gin or Gym or on my Blog at http://www.westendlife.biz/ ginorgymblog.html Till next time...

Rowardennan to Milngavie. Nae bother. It’s just a cycle and a run! Last year my Mum, Sally, was diagnosed with bowel cancer, after her first successful surgery a second cancer in the bowel was discovered, which only 3% of people get. While Sally was facing a second major operation to take the cancer out of her bowel, the cancer had spread to her liver. She fought every minute until she passed away on the 27th of December. She loved the first Sally Challenge and the support shown for the cause. This year we are raising money for The Accord Hospice who were an amazing source of strength before Sally passed away. Sally lived life to the full and was an inspiration to me. Sally always put other people first. Take on this challenge and put other people first.
