Most of our clients agree that being able to choose in comfort, and envisage the overall effect from seeing the samples displayed, alongside their own furniture and windows ensures that they are completely happy with the decisions made. Take the alleyway to burger heaven Come fly with me! Fabulous food with wine flights to match, this joint has taken off.
Foodfellas’ verdict .. Service HHHHH Food HHHHH Atmosphere HHHHH The cost for 4 people having 2 courses, including wine was £113.60 www.westendlife.biz
Some folks say I do my best work up dark alleys. But most of the guys that meet me in them don’t say much about it. In fact most of them never breathe another word. So when Big Double D mentioned that Stravaigin 2 in Ruthven Lane served a mean burger I was all over it like the cheapest suit you ever clapped eyes on. One of the two dolls we were dining with had fond memories of the cosy upstairs room at this famed west end joint. Something to do with birthday parties and an unforgettable hen night. She suggested rekindling the memories with the “Red Wine Flight” - three very different glasses of good strong vino rosso for £11.95. That’s my kind of gal. Never one to shy away from a belly full of lead I went for the fresh pheasant and chicken liver parfait to start. No fears of breaking my
@westendlife
teeth on a shotgun pellet. Boy, that pate was no patsy. Meanwhile the ladies chowed down on some “really cheesy garlicky bread”. Mama mia! For mains Doll Number One went for a warming plate of award winning haggis, neeps and champit tatties, while Number Two struck it lucky with a dreamy Portobello mushroom number. For me and Double D there was never a choice on the main event – it had to be the belly busting 18oz triple burger. Moist, meaty and as close as I’ve come to the best in town so far. Never ones to usually shy away from taking on a good pud – and believe me there were plenty – those bad boy burgers had us beaten. But like the bad pennies we, are we’ll be back for more. So look out Stravaigin 2. You ain’t seen the last of us.

at home with..Richie Gray It’s hard to miss 6ft 8in rugby powerhouse Richie Gray with his shock of blond hair when he’s out and about in the West End, but here he tells Katrina Tweedie that although he’s moving on, it will still remain home.
Kat: Where are you going and why? Richie: I’m leaving my current club, the Glasgow Warriors, at the end of the season and moving to the Sale Sharks, in Manchester, in June. Kat: You bought your first flat in the West End two years ago, how do feel about leaving? Richie: The West End feels like home. I learned to play rugby at Kelvinside Academy then bought a flat here when I was 20 and it was great to have the freedom. I’m keeping it so I can have regular visits back to the West End. Kat: How difficult was the decision to leave the Warriors? Richie: Hugely difficult. It’s hard to think about the friends and family I’m leaving behind. I did a lot of thinking about it and spoke to loads of people and decided this was the best move for me. Sale is a fantastic club that is going places at the moment. Kat: You’ve been described as the saviour of Scottish rugby. Does that put you under huge pressure?
Richie: We weren’t a rugby family, if anything my father was more into football and golf, and I only started playing rugby when I was 12. My first season didn’t go too well but I was a late bloomer. When I got offered my first apprentice contract with the National Academy at 17 I realised I might have a shot at rugby for a career.
Richie: Comments like that are very nice but I try not to feel the pressure and just get on with it, enjoying and playing the game well.
Kat: Your younger brother Jonny recently made his debut for the Scotland under-20 team. Will you get to play together?
Kat: What’s it like wearing the Scotland Rugby jersey?
Richie: I’ve never played with him and I’d love to do it during my career – it’s a goal of mine, although I don’t know what he thinks.
Richie: Just brilliant, it fills you with pride and there’s nothing like it. When you’re playing for your nation and you hear 12,000 people cheering at Murrayfield it’s very emotional. You think of everyone you’re representing, your family, Scotland, and I feel so proud.
16
Kat: Were you always destined to be a rugby player?
Kat: What do you think you’d be doing if you weren’t playing rugby? Richie: Hopefully I’d be at university studying engineering.
www.westendlife.biz
@westendlife
Three things I love about the West End: • Oran Mor on Byres Road for a drink with the lads. • Ketchup on Ashton Lane for a bite to eat. • Vodka Wodka for a night out - as long as I don’t have training the next day.
Kat: Since your first full international cap, against New Zealand in 2010, your profile has grown enormously. How has it changed your life? Richie: The last year has been strange with everything that’s happened to me. I’m getting recognised more, although I do stand out a bit… Kat: Which fans stop you the most? Richie: Dads who want to talk about rugby, kids who play the sport, and there have been a few mums who have pointed out their sons growing their hair like mine. Kat: Where do you go on your days off? Richie: I might nip up to Douglas Park Golf Club for a game of golf if one of the lads can get on. I don’t shop much because it’s a struggle to find clothes that fit me, and I love the restaurants and bars on Byres Road.

Brian Maule A fruity treat to tantalise your taste buds...
Apple Tarte Tatin Ingredients (for filling): 1 1/2 lbs firm apples 2/3 cup granulated sugar 3 oz. butter (room temp.) Butter for baking dish Lemon juice
Ingredients (for crust): 1 1/3 cup flour 2 eggs 4 oz butter (chilled!) 1 tbsp granulated sugar Pinch of salt
Method (for filling): 1: Preheat oven to 400°F. 2: Peel apples and lightly coat with lemon juice, so that they don’t brown. 3: Put sugar and 3 tbsp water in a pot and caramelize. How to
caramelize? Let sugar melt into water on a very low flame.
Method (for crust):
4: Once melted, turn up the flame a bit, don’t stir, but tilt the pot and move it around from time to time. Once the syrup has a pale honey colour, you can stop. If you want a darker caramel, be careful that you don’t let it burn.
2: Cut chilled butter into small pieces and mix into flour with finger tips. Stop working batter once it looks like ‘sand’.
5: Add butter to caramel and stir until it melts. Take off heat and pour caramel into a buttered pie dish. 6: Cut apples into halves. Cut each half into three even pieces. Place apples in pie dish, so that they are squeezed tightly together. You want to do this step as quickly as possible, so that the caramel doesn’t harden too much. If you want, you can begin slicing apples while you are making the caramel. Just be careful to check caramel, so that it doesn’t burn. 7: Bake for 40 - 45 minutes. During this time you can prepare the crust. Roll it out so that it is a drop larger than your pie dish, and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Even if you are using a pre-made crust, you still want to spread it out to the right size, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
1: Mix salt, sugar, and flour.
3: Make a well and pour in eggs. Incorporate into mix using your fingers and a spatula. 4: Once homogeneous, form a ball, place on a floured surface and knead for 10 seconds. Reshape into a ball, roll out with a rolling pin, and refrigerate for 30 minutes. 5: Take tatin out of oven, and let apples cool off a bit. Once cooled, place crust on top, tuck the edges into the dish, and bake for 30 minutes, or until crust has browned. 6: Remove from oven and let cool a little. Place a serving dish on top of the tarte and carefully flip over, so that the apples are facing up. Serve warm, with vanilla ice-cream.
Tip: Make your tatin ahead of time, just make sure that you place it on a dish that can go back in the oven.
Brian opened the doors of his Glasgow fine dining restaurant, Chardon D’or in 2001, bringing his international reputation for preparing some of Europe’s best food with him.
