Symes & Wright were formed as a gunmaker in London in 1987. Both Peter Symes and Alex Wright had previously worked for James Purdey & Sons and decided to set up business on their own. With a flair for design and marketing and a fresh outlook, the company was quickly established as a serious competitor to the existing London makers. At a time when the London trade was slowly pulling out of recession and perceived as old and stuffy, Symes & Wright were like a breath of fresh air. During the company’s short history it produced some of the best guns to come out of London since the 1930s. To quote from one of the company’s advertisements, “We are not trading on a reputation established over a century ago, nor do we waste energy marketing luxury goods associated with our name. Our business is quite simply building the finest sporting guns money can buy, without compromise, without exception”.

The following fifteen lots comprise the most important collection of vintage guns to come to the market in recent years. Owned by many of the most important shots of their generation, Royalty and Nobility among them, they represent the golden age of sport and the highpoint in the history of shooting. In 1903, Baily’s Magazine published a list of the best shots in England. 1. Earl de Grey (Lord Ripon)

2. Lord Walsingham; Mr R.H. Rimington Wilson 3. Mr Heatly Noble

4. Hon H Stonor; Lord Falconer; Prince Victor Duleep Singh; HRH Prince of Wales (Edward VII); Mr F E R Fryer

5. Mr E de C Oakley; Lord Ashburton

6. Mr A W Blyth; Mr C P Wykeham Martin; Prince Frederick Duleep Singh; Lord Canarvon 7. Lord Warwick; Lord Westbury; Sir Robert Gresley

We have guns from three of the most important names in that list, as well as some of their close associates and shooting companions. They would have shot together on numerous occasions and it is fitting that they should be reunited in this collection.

Much has been written of the golden age of shooting, and many classic works published that recount the history of the great shots in the Victorian shooting field. It is an age that we will never see again, with many feats of shooting that will never be repeated. Ripon’s lifetime total will likely never be surpassed, nor Walsingham’s record day in 1888 where 1070 grouse fell to his own gun in a single day.The guns and gunmaking from that era will likely never be surpassed either. enquiries: +44 (0)1798 875300 or +44(0)7831 645551

Lot 268 JOHN DICKSON & SON A SCARCE 8-BORE HAMMER GUN, NO. 3989, BUILT FOR THE RENOWNED COLLECTOR CHARLES GORDON 32-inch damascus barrels with 3 1/2-inch chambers, about true cylinder and full choke borings, doll’s head extension, the rounded frame, rebounding back locks, hammers and rotary underlever with fine scroll engraving and retaining much original hardening colour, 14 3/4-inch well figured stock including recoil pad, 13lb. 12oz., black powder re-proof, in its fully fitted brassbound oak case with its full complement of maker’s accessories, including turnscrews, powder and shot measures, reloading tool, cleaning rod, oil bottle, brushes, nipple key, etc, in its leather slip cover The maker confirms that the gun was ordered by Charles Gordon on March 10th 1886.

Charles Gordon was born in 1853, and was the most important single customer of John Dickson & Son. An eccentric and ultimately mad collector of all things, he amassed a collection of 229 guns, rifles and pistols, all ordered new from Dickson’s between 1868 and 1906. The greater majority being flintlock and percussion muzzle loading guns, being built “out of period” as the muzzle loader had become obsolete by 1865. He also bought 15 guns from Purdey between 1894 and 1904, as well as numerous guns from Joseph Harkom and Alex Henry. In total he bought at least 300 brand new, best guns rifles and pistols. Although his estate at Halmyre was large, and he owned substantial property in Edinburgh, his collectiong obsession eventually bankrupted him. Declared bankrupt in 1908, his collections, house and estate were sold and he died in 1918 in a humble cottage on his former estate. £18000 - 20000

Lot 273 J. PURDEY & SONS A 20-BORE BAR-IN-WOOD LEVER COCKING HAMMER GUN, NO. 10395, BUILT FOR LORD RIPON 33-inch damascus barrels with 2 1/2-inch chambers, about 3/4 choke borings, the frame, rebounding bar locks, hammers and underlever with fine bouquet and scroll engraving, 14 3/4-inch highly figured stock, 6lb. 3oz., black powder re-proof, bores marked

The maker confirms that the gun was built in 1880 for Earl de Grey, 2nd Marquis of Ripon and that the original barrel was 33-inches. The gun appears not to have been altered from its original specification and the records make mention of the gun having a “Daw” action. The specification of the gun is most unusual for this time and indeed it seems that the great shots of the past were as keen in experimenting with barrels of extreme length as are many shots today.

Lord Ripon, Earl de Grey, was born in 1852 and became the second Marquis of Ripon in 1909. He is arguably the greatest game shot of all time with a recorded lifetime's total of 556,813 head of game. Much of his shooting was conducted with a set of three guns and with great speed of loading is known to have had seven dead birds in the air at one time. He persisted in the use of hammer guns. The unprecedented size of his "bag" has led to his frequent description of the greatest shot of all and his feats are unlikely to ever be repeated. At Studley Royal, his Yorkshire estate, he entertained the royalty and nobility of England and Europe and in turn shot with the greatest sporting estates, such as Holkham, Sandringham and Elveden in the heyday of the shooting party. It was his combination of natural ability and total commitment to his chosen sport which raised him above the level of other good shots. In the shooting field throughout his life he was repeatedly top score and despite increasing age he maintained the highest standard to the end. He died on September 22nd 1923 in the field, having killed 51 grouse on his last drive, while the last birds of the day were being picked up, he fell down dead.

Lord Ripon, who was married to society beauty Gladys Lonsdale and was a close friend of George V. Lord Ripon achieved his incredible ''bag'', not only because of his ability, but because he was invited to shoot regularly on the very best-stocked estates at a time when game abounded. The Duke of Portland said Lord Ripon had ''an extraordinary eye'', and another shooting pal, Lord Walsingham, wrote of how he and Ripon, shooting pheasants at Studley Royal, ''took alternate birds by mutual agreement''. On one occasion, they killed 98 birds between them - having fired 50 shots each. Highly-drilled loaders ensured that not a moment's valuable shooting time was lost. But his speed sometimes caused problems. A gamebook entry dated December 18, 1885, reveals: ''Blew top off No 1 gun with No 3.'' Sometimes, however, he fell short of his own high standards. November 19, 1907: ''404. Shot alright but could not keep up rapidity of firing.''

Tom de Grey, 6th Lord Walsingham was born in 1843 and served as Conservative MP for West Norfolk from 1865 to 1870. In that year he succeeded to the estate and title of his father and entered the House of Lords, serving as Lord in Waiting to the second government of Benjamin Disraeli. He is however best known for his prowess at shooting, and he was regarded by Lord Ripon as “the best game shot I have ever seen”. It was written after his death that “He was the best shot in England, with perhaps one exception, Lord de Grey (Lord Ripon)… those two were a long way in front of all other good shots… it was that quickness combined with accuracy that enabled him in the best company to kill more game than any other member of the party. The late Lord Ripon was quite as accurate if not more so, but he could not get his gun off so quickly”. He died in 1919.

GAVIN GARDINER LIMITED’S AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEE If Gavin Gardiner Limited sells an item of Property which is later shown to be a “Counterfeit”, subject to the terms below Gavin Gardiner Limited will rescind the sale and refund the Buyer the total amount paid by the Buyer to Gavin Gardiner Limited for that Property, up to a maximum of the Purchase Price.

The Guarantee lasts for one (1) year after the date of the relevant auction, is for the benefit of the Buyer only and is non-transferable.

“Counterfeit” means an item of Property that in Gavin Gardiner Limited’s reasonable opinion is an imitation created with the intent to deceive over the authorship, origin, date, age, period, culture or source, where the correct description of such matters is not included in the catalogue description for the Property. Property shall not be considered Counterfeit solely because of any damage and/or restoration and/or modification work (including, but not limited to, recolouring, refinishing or rebarreling).

Please note that this Guarantee does not apply if either:(i) the catalogue description was in accordance with the generally accepted opinions of scholars and experts at the date of the sale, or the catalogue description indicated that there was a conflict of such opinions; or

(ii) the only method of establishing at the date of the sale that the item was a Counterfeit would have been by means of processes not then generally available or accepted, unreasonably expensive or impractical; or likely to have caused damage to or loss in value to the Property (in Gavin Gardiner Limited’s reasonable opinion); or (iii) there has been no material loss in value of the Property from its value had it accorded with its catalogue description. To claim under this Guarantee, the Buyer must:-

(i) notify Gavin Gardiner Limited in writing within one (1) month of receiving any information that causes the Buyer to question the authenticity or attribution of the Property, specifying the lot number, date of the auction at which it was purchased and the reasons why it is believed to be Counterfeit; and

Gavin Gardiner Limited has discretion to waive any of the above requirements. Gavin Gardiner Limited may require the Buyer to obtain at the Buyer's cost the reports of two independent and recognised experts in the relevant field and acceptable to Gavin Gardiner Limited. Gavin Gardiner Limited shall not be bound by any reports produced by the Buyer, and reserves the right to seek additional expert advice at its own expense. In the event Gavin Gardiner Limited decides to rescind the sale under this Guarantee, it may refund to the Buyer the reasonable costs of up to two mutually approved independent expert reports, provided always that the costs of such reports have been approved in advance and in writing by Gavin Gardiner Limited.

(ii) return the Property to Gavin Gardiner Limited in the same condition as at the date of sale and be able to transfer good title in the Property, free from any third party claims arising after the date of the sale.
