Lot 1 DWM A RARE 7.65MM 1902 GEORG LUGER PRESENTATION LUGER CARBINE, NO. 9110C 11 3/4-inch barrel with ramp bead fore sight, with three position rear sight graduated for 100, 200, 250 and 300 metres, the chamber inlaid with a gold presentation monogram of a stylised letter ‘A’ below a royal crown (possibly of Herzog Aribert von Anhalt), the toggle with DWM scroll, the rear link stamped with the rare ‘GL’ marking, the chequered walnut fore-end incorporating additional recoil spring, the frame with grip safety, safety and dismounting levers, retaining most of its original blued and straw finish overall, German nitro proof, shoulder stock and magazine missing It is believed that a special series of presentation carbines, numbered between 9105C and 9115C were built in 1902 for presentation by Georg Luger and DWM to important customers and clients. These pistols all bear Georg Luger’s personal monogram on the rear toggle link and this only appears on pistols and carbines personally inspected and/or presented by Georg Luger. Other examples known to exist include numbers 9106C, possibly presented to Borschardt; number 9109C which was presented to Hiram Maxim; and another, 9112C with the unidentified initials ‘HCR’. Provenance The pistol was given to Andre Noel, Governor of Konstanz in 1946 by the Prince of Furstenberg. The vendor states that upon his arrival in the region, the new Governor was shocked to find the occupying French troops preparing to hang the Prince. Enquiring what was going on it was explained that the Prince was to be hanged for his enormous lack of respect for hanging the French flag upside down. It did not take him long to resolve the issue by explaining that von Furstenberg’s family banner is very similar to the French flag but with the colours reversed. Having saved the Prince’s life Andre and the Prince became good friends and the Prince presented the Luger carbine in gratitude for having saved his life. Later a street was named Andrenoelstrasse in his honour. The pistol has remained in the same family since. This lot will not be available for viewing in London. It may be viewed by appointment at our office in West Sussex. £8000 - 12000 enquiries: +44 (0)1798 875300 or +44(0)7831 645551

Gillig by Dr Wm F. Carver, Dec 14 1880”, the tang fitted with a stock taken from a double barrel shotgun, 8lb. 6oz., rusted and worn overall William Frank "Doc" carver (1851 to 1927) "Doc" Carver, "Champion Shot of the World" was a well known sharpshooter and contemporary of Buffalo Bill Cody. Although trained as a dentist it was his career as a showman and champion rifle shot for which he is remembered. As a friend of Cody's he acquired considerable notoriety as a rifle shot. In 1877 he issued a challenge to all comers: he would use a rifle and the challenger could us a shotgun, and the targets would be the newly invented "Bogardus" glass balls thrown from a trap. He contended that he could hit more targets from horseback than his challenger could hit while standing on the ground. One of his first significant awards was for breaking 885 glass ball out of 1,000 thrown at San Francisco Feb 22, 1878. Following his success he toured extensively and arrived in Europe in 1879 shooting at matches and exhibitions in front of Nobility and Royalty. He had a significant engagement in London at the Crystal Palace round the time that this rifle was presented. Upon his return from Europe he entered in to partnership with Buffalo Bill to produce a Wild West show, "Wild West". After the first season they parted ways, and the show now known as "Buffalo Bill's Wild West" went on to achieve international recognition. Carver continued to tour on a smaller scale for the rest of his life, famously incorporating a Diver Horse act in to the show. This element was famously continued by members of his family until the 1970's. For further information please see "Buffalo Bills Wild West", by Richard Wilson & Greg Martin. £800 - 1200

The following two lots are of recent manufacture and remain new and unused. The first lot will be offered with the option of buying the second lot at the same price to make a pair, if the buyer of the first lot only wants a single gun, then the second lot will be offered as the next lot. The vendor makes the following statement: "The next two lots comprise a pair of unused and very fine 12 bore Charles Lancaster O/U pinless sidelock ejectors and a purpose English made case for a single gun. They have single non-selesctive triggers with rolled edge trigger guards, for the right handed. They have 29" barrels and though engraved by different engravers, both guns have been decorated with the exquisite style, known as the 600 pattern and so favoured by James Purdey. The engraving work as been executed to an exceptional standard. Whilst these guns are a true pair, they are being offered for sale with the option of being sold as singles" "It is unlikely that there are another two such guns in existence, and it is believed that they are unique, being O/Us and having pinless locks. All the work carried out including the finishing, has been to the highest of London standards". "Should the first gun be successfully sold, then the second gun will be offered to the buyer at the same cost as the first. In the event that the guns are sold as a pair, then the single case will also be offered with them, at no cost. If they are sold as singles, then the case will be by separate negotiation". "Both guns come compete with a 5 year no-quibble mechanical warranty".

GAVin GARDinER LiMitED’S AuthEnticitY GuARAntEE If Gavin Gardiner Limited sells an item of Property which is later shown to be a “Counterfeit”, subject to the terms below Gavin Gardiner Limited will rescind the sale and refund the Buyer the total amount paid by the Buyer to Gavin Gardiner Limited for that Property, up to a maximum of the Purchase Price. The Guarantee lasts for one (1) year after the date of the relevant auction, is for the benefit of the Buyer only and is non-transferable. “Counterfeit” means an item of Property that in Gavin Gardiner Limited’s reasonable opinion is an imitation created with the intent to deceive over the authorship, origin, date, age, period, culture or source, where the correct description of such matters is not included in the catalogue description for the Property. Property shall not be considered Counterfeit solely because of any damage and/or restoration and/or modification work (including, but not limited to, recolouring, refinishing or rebarreling). Please note that this Guarantee does not apply if either:(i) the catalogue description was in accordance with the generally accepted opinions of scholars and experts at the date of the sale, or the catalogue description indicated that there was a conflict of such opinions; or

To claim under this Guarantee, the Buyer must:(i) notify Gavin Gardiner Limited in writing within one (1) month of receiving any information that causes the Buyer to question the authenticity or attribution of the Property, specifying the lot number, date of the auction at which it was purchased and the reasons why it is believed to be Counterfeit; and (ii) return the Property to Gavin Gardiner Limited in the same condition as at the date of sale and be able to transfer good title in the Property, free from any third party claims arising after the date of the sale. Gavin Gardiner Limited has discretion to waive any of the above requirements. Gavin Gardiner Limited may require the Buyer to obtain at the Buyer's cost the reports of two independent and recognised experts in the relevant field and acceptable to Gavin Gardiner Limited. Gavin Gardiner Limited shall not be bound by any reports produced by the Buyer, and reserves the right to seek additional expert advice at its own expense. In the event Gavin Gardiner Limited decides to rescind the sale under this Guarantee, it may refund to the Buyer the reasonable costs of up to two mutually approved independent expert reports, provided always that the costs of such reports have been approved in advance and in writing by Gavin Gardiner Limited.

(ii) the only method of establishing at the date of the sale that the item was a Counterfeit would have been by means of processes not then generally available or accepted, unreasonably expensive or impractical; or likely to have caused damage to or loss in value to the Property (in Gavin Gardiner Limited’s reasonable opinion); or (iii) there has been no material loss in value of the Property from its value had it accorded with its catalogue description.
