Lot 89 ROBERT SOUTHEY (1774-1843), A HAND WRITTEN LETTER WHICH READS: 15 QUEEN ANNE STREET, CAVENDISH SQUARE, 17TH JUNE [1820]. Dear Sir. Will you allow me to request a favour for which request the care itself will be the best excuse & apology. My fathers sister, almost in her seventieth year, has been at length prevailed upon to undertake a journey from Taunton to Keswick, to see mine and my brothers family. I am to meet her at Birmingham, with my friend Mr Nash, and we shall proceed from there by chaises, at such a rate as may not fatigue her. I should feel it as an act of particular kindness is you would receive her for one night under your roof, because she would not be likely to obtain much rest at an inn in your great and busy city. She will arrive in this stage from Bristol on Wednesday the 28th and we intend to join her by the London mail on the day following. I write this in great haste, or I would reply to some parts of the last letter with which you favoured me & for which I can not only return my thanks. I am so ? in engagements of various kinds that I have scarcely time ? for food or sleep. I saw Charles some days ago, and was delighted at ? him in all respects so well. Sophie also was looking in better health & happier that I had seen her for many years. Believe me my dear Sirs, respectfully and truly yours Robert Southey. it is believed that the letter is written to charles Lloyd ‘The Poet’ (1775-1836). Dated in another hand on the right of the page r. Southey 17/6 1820. The paper water marked for 1817. robert Southey was a romantic poet and Poet Laureate from 1813-1843 but is also renowned as a literary scholar and biographer, indeed he wrote a biography of Horatio nelson in 1813 which has scarcely been out of print. He is also remembered for writing the famous children’s story ‘The Three Bears’, the original goldilocks story.

Lot 90 VISCOUNT HORATIO NELSON (1758-1805), a hand written and signed letter which reads: Bath, January 29th 1798. My Dear Lloyd. There is nothing you can desire me to do that I shall not have the greatest pleasure in complying with for I am sure you can never possess a thought that is not most strictly honourable. I was much flattered by the Marquis’s kind notice of me and I beg you will make my respects acceptable to him. Tell him that I possess his place in Mr. Palmers Box but his Lordship did not tell me all its charms that generally some of the handsomest Lady’s at Bath are partakers in the Box and was I a bachelor I would not answer for being terrified, but as I am possessed of everything which is valuable in a wife I have no occasion to think beyond a pretty face. I am sorry the King is so poor, had he been worth what those Vile Dogs of opposition think, what a vast sum would have been given to the nation, but I now hope all the nation will subscribe liberally, you will believe that I do not urge others to give and to withhold myself but my mode of subscribing will be novel in its manner and by doing it I mean to debar myself of many comforts to ser ve my countr y and I expect great consolation ever y time I cut a slice of salt beef instead of mutton. The Vanguard will be at Sheerness next Saturday and if this wind holds she will be at Portsmouth before Thompson quits the Channel, I only pray that the French may not be ready to leave Brest I have been in
a fever ever since the Boadicea’s return with the account of their being ready for sea. Lady Nelson and my father thank you for your kind remembrance of them and believe me my Dear Lloyd, you most affectionate, Horatio Nelson. To Thomas Lloyd Esq no: 15 Mary’s Buildings, St Martins Lane, London Written in black ink on grease proof paper. The letter is written in nelson’s left hand while he was recuperating in Bath from losing his arm. An inflammatory ligature impeded his recovery, however, this eventually came out naturally and nelson pushed for a command. Persistence paid off and he was given command of the 74-gun HMS vanguard. HMS Boadicea was a royal navy frigate serving in the channel and East indies. Thompson refers to Sir charles Thompson (1740-1799) who was in command of the Brest-blockade fleet until failing health forced his retirement in 1798. Provenance: The letter is entered for auction by The Lloyd family of Dolobran, Quakers, iron merchants and founder partners of Taylors and Lloyds bank, now Lloyds TSB. However, an article in The new York Times of December 31st 1911 states that this letter ‘nEW nELSon LETTEr’ was newly discovered by a West Hartleypool gentleman, an ancestor of Thomas Lloyd. it is not known who this ancestor is but it is presumed that it was returned / purchased by the Dolobran Lloyds at this time. £2000 - £4000

6th November Sale Report 2013
it is not often that one can say in the present market that the highest selling lot in an antiques sale would be a piece of furniture but this was indeed the case on 6th november. This may be slightly disingenuous however because the lot in question was perhaps the best george iii oak dresser and rack seen on the market for some years. of Minsterley type, the dresser was a beautiful nutty brown in colour with a honeysuckle pierced rack, two open shelves and fielded panel cupboards to each side. Most importantly, the base sported five drawers, a rare number and of a type very hard to find since most five drawer dressers were cut down to a more manageable three years ago. The dresser came from a local property and carried a tempting estimate of £5,000/7,000 which was easily trounced when it sold to a Derbyshire buyer for £10,000.
oak was particularly popular at this event and featured several times in the top 25 lots with another 18th century oak dresser realising £1,750 when it sold to a Welshpool private buyer and a george iii oak livery cupboard also going to Powys at £1,550.
nowadays it is not unusual for small items to realise more than large ones, perhaps bearing out the old adage ‘small is beautiful’. Second most popular lot in this sale behind the five drawer dresser was a cary’s pocket globe, English, 1791, which came with its original fitted case. At just 3.75 inches in diameter the buyer really could hold the whole world in his hands which he may well be doing now. it sold to an Australian buyer for £3,300. ceramics, both European and chinese continue to sell strongly for the right materiel and there was plenty on offer here for the discerning buyer. A chelsea ‘Hans Sloane’ pattern porcelain botanical soup plate from a church Stretton property and formerly in the n.M.redmayne collection sold to the London trade for £3,300 whilst another from the same property took £1,100 both surpassing modest estimates in the £500 region. Elsewhere in the European ceramics section, a large Masons ironstone Japan pattern jug, dated to 1820 and from a Market Drayton estate surprised everyone when soared over a £300 top estimate to take £1,600 from the London trade. The Asian Art session was complimented by another tranche of ca Mau shipwreck porcelain with nearly all lots tripling their estimates selling to UK buyers and chinese buyers bidding on the internet. A rare early chinese painted pottery jar and cover from the Han dynasty, 206Bc-22AD decorated with mythical birds scrolling around the shoulder and accompanied by a signed oxford Authentication certificate sold to a Worcestershire buyer for £1,150. overall, the sale grossed £100,000 from 211 lots sold, an 80% selling rate and average lot value of £475.
