A Brush with History _________________________________

Halls Asian Art specialist Alexander Clement explores the world of Chinese calligraphy and the many collector’s objects associated with the art. Calligraphy and painting are woven into the fabric of Chinese history and there are many traditions, styles and methodologies that require deep scholarship to fully understand. The paraphernalia of calligraphy abounds and one could base an entire collection on it. Brushes were made of bamboo or rosewood but other more precious and rare materials were used including gold, glass or ivory. The brush heads utilised hair from a host of animals including rabbit, deer, tiger and pig. Inkstones used for working ink sticks could also be carved into elaborate forms as well as the small pots used to wash the brushes. While not in use the brushes would be dried and kept in a pot. This vessel is often of cylindrical form and is central to the calligraphic traditions. They were made in many materials including wood such as huanghauli (yellow rosewood), bamboo, porcelain, lacquer and hardstones including jade. decoration ranges from none at all, such as the rosewood examples where the beauty derived simply from the wood grain is enough, through complex relief carving in bamboo, jade and lacquer to blue and white decoration on porcelain as well as polychrome enamels. Subject matters vary as much as the materials but often show scenes of immortals engaged in tales of mythology, scholars contemplating nature of studying scrolls or views of wildlife. Brush washers are no less varied in materials or decoration and if you add to that scroll weights, paper weights, wrist rests and seals, there is much to choose from for the collector. In our present auction there are plenty of opportunities to tap into the culture of calligraphy. The beautiful soapstone seal (lot 93) is such a delightful shade of yellow that it really stands out on a curio shelf. For something with more gravitas there is a sumptuous dark pink veined paperweight carved with fierce lion dogs (lot 111). one of my favourite pieces in the sale is an ivory wrist rest (lot 204), similar to an example in the Palace Museum, Beijing, which is finely carved on both sides; the inside with a well populated village in high relief and the outside with a delicate low relief mountain scene. There are also plenty of brush pots, known as ‘bitong’, including carved bamboo, ivory and cinnabar lacquer. This last represents a delightful opportunity for Halls to offer something truly exceptional. The ‘Wang Xizhi and geese’ brush pot (lot 158) is one of the best examples of 18th Century lacquer work that I have ever handled. It is carved with incredible attention to detail depicting a scene of Wang Xizhi on his veranda contemplating geese in a pond. Wang Xizhi (Ad303-361) has been referred to as the ‘Sage of Calligraphy’ and is an exalted figure in Chinese history. one of his hobbies was, by all accounts, keeping geese and he drew inspiration from the graceful movement of their necks for his writing style. While it is reputed that one of his most famous works, Preface to the Poems Composed at the orchid Pavilion, was buried with the Emperor Taizong, there are no surviving originals. But finely traced reproductions were made which do still exist although practically none outside museum collections. Critically for the collector, and the reason objects associated with writing and painting can command high prices at auction, is that they were largely made for the domestic market and not for export. This applies particularly to those made before about 1800. For that reason, when acquiring a brush pot, wrist rest, paperweight or brush washer, you are forming a link between you and the generations of calligraphers who will have used it. Calligraphers who saw the art of writing as expressing the very forces of nature at work.

The Scholar’s Table: Asian art including the Robert Owen Collection - 11th May 2016 Sale Report It was a pleasure to put together an auction with so much variety as we were able to do in May of 2016. This was thanks in no small measure to the Robert owen collection of scholar’s objects and other works. Amassed over many years in Hong Kong and mainland China as well as London specialist dealers, this was an eclectic mix of traditional pottery and porcelain, carved hardwood figures, bronzes and also natural wood roots and rock formations. It ran to over eighty lots and included such highlights as a large Chinese bronze figure of Laozi on a buffalo which reached £2,100 against its £400-600 estimate, a carved bamboo model of a river boat at £1,800 against a £150200 estimate and a carved rootwood brush pot or libation cup which raced over its £200-300 estimate to sell for £850. Star piece of the collection was a delightful inlaid hardwood hexagonal treasure box with carved jade finial. It had the highest estimate of anything in the collection at £1,200-1,500 but a great deal of pre-sale interest foretold a much higher result and we were not disappointed with a hammer price of £6,000. The other sections of the sale all performed well with hammer prices largely falling within estimates but there was still room for a few surprises. A Chinese blue and white dish decorated with lion dogs made a ten-timesestimate £1,050 while a small Claire-de-lune porcelain water pot with a peach bloom box and cover did even better at £1,300 against its £200-300 estimate. Chinese and Japanese works of art also did well. A beautiful fourfold mixed hardstone table screen more than doubled its top estimate to reach £1,700 while a pair of impressive Japanese shibayama tusk vases by Masayasu comfortably passed their reserve to finish at £4,900. The crowning glory of the auction, though, was an exceptional pair of Chinese turquoise ground famille rose vases and covers with daoguang (1821-1850) marks and of the period. Brought in to Halls during routine valuations at the beginning of the year, the vases came from a private collection where they had been enjoyed for nearly fifty years. Having been acquired in an auction of effects belonging to prominent physician dr Wilfred Watkins-Pitchford, they also had terrific provenance which, in today’s volatile market, is all important. Estimated to reflect their quality at £20,000-30,000, they were hotly contested by telephone bidding, ultimately selling for £85,000 to a buyer in mainland China. While we have undoubtedly seen a softening in the market for Asian art in recent months, there is no doubt that a strong appetite remains for good quality pieces with provenance. Mainland China is still a force to be reckoned with and this makes for a very exciting saleroom. Alexander Clement
