PAUL RENNER Paul Renner was born in Germany on August 9, 1878 and passed away on April 25, 1956. He earned his degree in painting and architecture, obtaining a personal taste geared towards functionality over expression. He was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund (German Association of Craftsmen) which was a union of artists, architects, and designers who came together to encourage the progression of modern design. They were instrumental supporters of the Bauhaus school. Renner began his publication work with an opinion piece against the Nazi regime, Kulturbolschewismus (Cultural Bolshevism). This caused Renner to lose his post as director of Germany's Graphic Design school, and he moved to Switzerland. Free from the looming presence of the regime, Renner was free to explore his interests in graphic design. He set out to create a new age of guidelines for book design, which he published in Typografie all Kunst (Typography as Art) and Die Kunst der Typographie (The Art of Typography). In 1927, Renner released his original typeface, Futura. Futura's foundation is geometric shapes, inspired by the Bauhaus. Renner decided to fuse the two popular type styles of the day - Gothic and Roman - and created a sans serif that moved away from the grotesque style. Futura's classicism and modernity caused it's immediate success, especially in the United States. Architype Renner was released shortly after Futura, containing special characters designed to be universal in communicating any language. These chosen characters emerged from Renner's experimentations during Futura's design. Renner produced six typefaces during his life: Futura, Architype Renner, Plan, Futura Black, Futura Light, Ballade, and Renner Antiqua. Classic and timeless, Futura continues to be one of the most popular typefaces today.

The Tyger William Blake Tyger Tyger, burning bright, In the forests of the night; What immortal hand or eye, Could frame thy fearful symmetry? In what distant deeps or skies. Burnt the fire of thine eyes? On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand, dare seize the fire? And what shoulder, & what art, Could twist the sinews of thy heart? And when thy heart began to beat, What dread hand? & what dread feet? What the hammer? what the chain, In what furnace was thy brain? What the anvil? what dread grasp, Dare its deadly terrors clasp! When the stars threw down their spears And water'd heaven with their tears: Did he smile his work to see? Did he who made the Lamb make thee? Tyger Tyger burning bright, In the forests of the night: What immortal hand or eye, Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?
