WARWICK JUNCTION PROPOSAL UIA 2014 International Durban By understanding lifestyle and reasons which lead to local values, we tried to design new city identity. Its main idea is based on deeper case study, definitions of slums, ways of living in the area and system how the community works. The most important value of Warwick Junction (solving area) is its unrepeatable market atmospehre. Life on the streets and unique habits -able to find only in Durban, South Africa. We decided to enlarge those market places and spread them by compositional line. This corridor connetcs two mainly important spaces based on public space research. We are proposing new way of life with old precious atmosphere and with value significant for this area.
The main compositional axis is defined by marking existing valuable public spaces and new potencial places of development. Along main compositional axes has been created public market system with additional functional areas. Areas are needed for many development purposes. Plasma (working title) - structure created above existing built-up level offers new space for gathering and leasure time activities. Level 0 assumes all operational functions for the smooth running of the city. Established urban fabric covers existing physical and psychological border - railways. It connects two different previously independently evolving city poles. We assume the rapid development of urban areas and their subsequent overgrowth into the proposed zone. - We predict sprawl in tourism, functional dispersal and economic growth. - We come up with new space differentiation. - We propose to enlarge market spaces and strenghten unique city identity. - We want to ensure better living for people working in this area. - We want to avoid criminality by creating safe open spaces for pedestrians. - We create enoght open spaces and chances for individual human development.

Our input /what we want to bring.
Our steps /what we want to do.
- main Durban values support - residential and social living opportunities - shorter walking distances to work - prevent crime - connect warwick junction to polycentric greater city network - space for natural city population development - futuristic thinking - Durban natural identity
- keep existing public spaces - create new public spaces with absenting functions - enlarge markets - build new variable housing spots - horizontal space segregation public/semi-public/private - keep existing above-urban transport connections - focus on goals in the far future - support markets na public space busy life

A) Acity-forming element We want to support public events: a) creates variable connections between streets, squares and parks - traditional ceremonies - cultural events the rules, that count with natural intervention of people, their usual -building traditional ceremonies b) forms strategy and uses it to enreach the city in both functional and esthetical way - cultural events - children´s events B)others reflexion of the markets operation - according to its scale, modul, relation- to surrounding space and objects children´s events - many - many others square park street C) forming property, flexibility, variability, multipling or minimalising of elements D) changeing unavailable and unused spaces to needed by filling them with missing but necessary function - such as parking E) enables to create new spaces in the future without spreading the city Element strategy /what it is.../what it does...

RESILIENCE CITY
SHORTTERM
intervention 1 Step 1 One central market which is controlling everything - present Step 2 Creating new legs of markets which are controlled by central one Step 3 Creation of a mobile markets so they are able to enter surrounding of the warwick center Step 4 Creating a new web of market legs with mobile markets in the suburbs not only in the centre of Warwick - the markets are availabe to everyone
Step 1
Step 3
The mobile market has the potencial to reach numerous blocks. The main function is to sell goods to people who can´t reach the central market. If few tousand people can visit one central market per day and one mobile market can serve decades of blocks per day then could be there expected potencial rise of economy.
Step 2
Step 4
intervention 2 PRESENT
FUTURE
-not effective - potentialy good sites for a construction are over dosed by parking lots ghoast parking lots
- to create effective parking lots which will be situated on the surrounding of the warwick centre on the strategic places
- the parking lots doesn’t have good location, some of them are overpacked and some cry for their attentin
- the biggest problem is that generaly they cost a fee
- few but with bigger space capacity - how to travel to the centre -with public transport, rickshaw, bicycle, taxi - the biggest plus - helps people without job to ge job opportunities, cleans city center, fill it with greenary and creates new Warwick centre

Shelters ...goal is to create easy, structuraly simple covers/ roofs/ shelters in spaces between buildings. In this type - subtropical enviroment conditions is necessary to make up some creative places to be covered against sunlight.
Those places offer possibility to stay, relax and enjoy view from platform or to make your journey from A - B more interesting. The solution/ proposal also brings new aesthetic values. They are helping to get people together and complement organical shapes of proposed platforms.
