It’s easy to lose track of how much we post. Even posting once every few days can build up to a big pile of data over the first few years of a child’s life.
No consent Kids don’t have any control over what is posted about them or who it is shared with.
Private information made public Sensitive information, such as heath information, development and schedule are recorded without the child’s consent.

Building a Digital Portrait Our connections are growing and so are the ways we are able to tell our stories. Like never before, individuals have the opportunity to share with a world wide audience.
Online movements are collected to build a digital portrait. Every click, upload, tag, and search build a digital picture of who a person is, collected in any number of data bases. Lives are increasingly being lived online. Email communication, social networking, blogs and browsing have created a society who’s actions, emotions and opinions live on data bases. ‘Put your best face forward’ may become an antiquated term with the growth of interconnectivity and data collection. Increasingly we turn to the internet to learn who a person is. With a long list of social networks, collecting huge amounts of data we may have no idea what can be seen by those who go looking. A person’s online movements, interactions, uploads and downloads create a portrait, how ever accurate, of who they are and have been. Although we may feel our data is safe and protected, facts show that data bases and servers are hacked on a regular basis, which exposes personal data to copy, corruption or deletion. In addition government agencies, corporations and hackers have access to a surprising amount of our information. Private thoughts, emotions and conversations which are passing through our digital interactions are vulnerable. All of this data may soon be an accurate reflection of who we are as a person. By clicking the ‘I Agree’ on user agreements we open up our personal information to be collected, analyzed
and stored. Through increasingly sophisticated collection and analysis predictions can be made of an individual’s movements and a surprisingly accurate picture of a persons tendencies and habits can be created. This vast resource of information, which we add to on a nearly daily basis, may not only effect us but those we post about. Being aware of the portrait we are building of vulnerable members of society must be considered. A parent’s Facebook page or blog often ceases to be their own on the day they discover they are expecting.

Stewarding Identities Parents and guardians have the unique ability to create and curate their child’s digital identity with unhindered access to everything that makes a child a person. This has created a situation where the subject has no input as to the amount of personal data and images which are published.
When data is uploaded it is out of our hands. We are able to delete visible data on some platforms, but the record of our actions lives forever on data bases that are not guaranteed to be safe or have permanent ownership. By the time that a child takes control of their digital identity, typically age 11 to 14, their actions and character may have been documented and published for more than a decade. Teenagers no longer have the chance to build a portrait of their own, rather they may step into a world that already knows their birth weight and the date of their first step. Digital photography has made images plentiful, which has allowed this generation to document their lives like never before. The ease of uploading photos and the ability to publish the details of a life while they are occurring to any number of platforms have opened the lives of a generation to the world. We have the unique privilege to be a part of an incredible shift in the way that mankind lives. Like any cultural shift there are consequences, both positive and negative. If a person’s life is made available for the world to see the poster may be violating rights, exposing the person to any number of consequences as well as affecting their future. Yet when a parent shares openly the most intimate parts of their child’s life, the moral and legal factors and far reaching concequences are rarely considered.
Posting core information such as date, time and weight at birth is often done without foresight or consideration. In the rush to share information with friends, family and acquaintances parents can become overzealous and take liberties with their children’s private data. As a child grows up with digitally connected parents, everything from thier developmental progress, behavioral issues, and health problems, to their preferences and favorite products may be freely shared and uploaded to databases. Giving such an accurate picture of children’s lives may be rewarding in the present, providing connection and a sense of community. Yet parents must consider the potential outcomes of their actions more than a decade and more into the future.

It’s tough to convince an adult that they need to be careful with what they post online about themselves. Focusing on the security of the most vulnerable part of society would be a more effective way to bring awareness to the issue.
Too much data There is no way for parents to keep track of everything posted about their child from multiple social networks.
Content control There is no way for parents to put a limit on the volume and content of their posts to keep them from sharing more than they want online.
The child’s future Parents don’t always consider the child’s future and digital reputation when they post pictures online.
It’s natural to share When I spend time with my beautiful little niece all I want to do is share the moments with my friends.

Generational Changes “There were very few pictures taken of my generation. The photos were put in albums which were maybe shown to people when they came over to the house. It was more of a record than a sharing thing.” — Judy Heyer, my mother
Photography has became less expensive and more common over throughout the last few generations. It’s place in the family has changed and the number of images taken by families has increased. As part of my research I looked into the way we share images and how it has changed over the generations. Developments in technology and cost of creating images has changed the number of photos that were taken of the children before the age of five dramatically. There is no statistical data regarding the amount of images take of an average child in North America over the last four generations, I therefore decided to use my family’s experience as an example. My grandmothers generation’s experience with image creation is significantly different to mine. If images were captured, the number of copies was very limited. The cost of film, developing and the camera were prohibitive for my grandparents generation. The only images created of the children before the age of five in my grandmothers family were at formal sittings of the family for a portrait, which were rare and costly. The way photographs were regarded has also shifted. In my grand parents generation a photograph was a record of a life. My mothers had a few more photographs taken of her before the age of five because the personal camera was becoming more common. Her family did not own a camera, but a member of her extended family would bring a camera by on
special occasions. Even with access to a camera, the cost of developing the photographs was still a hindrance to taking many photographs of the young children. When I was born the cost of film, cameras and image development had reduced dramatically. My parents owned a camera and were able to take hundreds of photos of me before the age of five. However, the audience that had access to my images did not change much from my mothers generation to mine. The photos still lived in the home, in a stack of photo albums that were shown to company. There is a significant jump when I look at the number of photographs that have been taken of my niece. Her parents have smart phones and the a DSLR. The photos they take are stored on their phones, the computer, and uploaded to the cloud. They also mail out Christmas and Birthday cards with images of their children as well as print out photo books. As for the audience of the images, it only takes one click to upload a photo to twitter which can be accessed by the over 3 billion people who have access to the internet.

Childhood Photos Project There are no adults who have had their lives documented on social networks as they were growing up. So I became a Guinea pig and posted my early life in a public profile to get an idea of what it was like.
I dreaded my weekly Facebook posts to the Poster Child Project. I am very careful with what personal information I share online, so uploading all of my childhood photos was way outside my comfort zone. These images had been private for nearly 30 years, tucked away safely between cellophane sheets in family photo albums. The stack of albums, housed in a hutch built by my great great grandfather, had a feeling of importance and permanence. The act of digitizing the images and letting them out into the world where any one could see them affected me more than I thought it would. The process of collecting my childhood photos was a great one. I was able to look closer at my childhood and find out more about my family and my hometown. My poor brother, cousins and extended family kept getting “I miss you!” emails from me, with some sentimental childhood photo attached. Those emails stood in contrast to my uploads to the Poster Child Project Facebook page. It is a public page that would receive comments from people I didn’t know. Strangers were enjoying my precious childhood memories. I was able to make an informed decision, as an adult, about what I wanted to be known about my childhood. Most of the comments from followers were pleasant, centering around my
cuteness and the 80’s fashion choices. There were moments that I enjoyed sharing, like the “I’m going to cut you” face I made after my first taste of ice cream, or the fantastic mullet my parents chose for me. But those moments were over shadowed by the realization that a lot of my favorite childhood memories were no longer tucked safely away, but had been copied to an unknown number of servers, had traveled to screens around the world. Most disconcerting realization of all is that I have no idea who has seen my baby pictures. Children who grow up in a world where posting on social networks is integral to a lot of parents lives will have a totally different view of privacy than I do.

Project Results The childhood photos project gave me some great insight into what it will be like for children to have their lives documented online. I was left with two distinct impressions.
Chapter 002
research
59
Would I want that on the internet?
1
Fortunatally my parents censored my baby pictures, so there are no terribly embarrasing pictures. But even posting this picture made me think of all the kids who have bathtub and bare bum pictures uploaded to the internet. I’m glad there are no uncensored pictures of my childhood online.
A life time of targeted marketing
2
Many of my childhood pictures include information about my preferences. My favorite toys, what foods I liked, and my daily activities are shown in photos and would have been detailed in captions. Kids who grow up with their lives posted to social networks may end up being targeted by advertisements from birth, creating a very accurate way for companies to target them as individuals.

Individuals who use social media and share information online should know what happens to their data.

The Poster Child Project

I decided to build an app and resources to let people make an educated decision about their children’s data and help them manage a digital portrait.

MFA Gr aphic design Thesis by jana he yer
Target Audience The Poster Child App was designed to give those who are already in the habit of posting their lives to social networks a tool to help keep track of the information they would normally share as a part of their digitally integrated life.
The heart of the Poster Child Project is to encourage people to consider more carefully what personal information is shared online and who has access. By focusing on a vulnerable part of society, young children, we hope to cause people to consider their own personal data sharing habits as well. Posting personal details of our lives has become such a habit for a lot of people in the western world that it has become a natural part of life. When it is our own information we have the power to make our own decision about what to share. The Poster Child Project seeks to cause people to consider the volume and content of their posts and to realize who can really see their personal information. Having a baby changes a lot of things in life, and causes expecting and new parents to have a new perspective on many issues in life. The Poster Child app is primarily is designed for people in this transitional time. Materials and tools are provided to lead them to make an educated and responsible decision on their child’s behalf. The smart phone app was decided to be the best tool for this demographic due to the fact that the percentage of the population with a smart phone is rapidly growing and individuals who consistently post on multiple social networks are more likely to use a smart phone. An app also makes it very convenient for users to access their reports and check in with their data levels.
The secondary audience we want to reach is the family and close social connections of the new parents. The Poster Child App allows for multiple users to contribute to a child’s account. If a grandmother or aunt posts about the child the parents may invite the family member to join Poster Child to build a more complete picture. If close friends frequently post, they may be invited as well.

Posting Reports You decide how many posts you want to make about your child. The app will keep track of your social networks and let you know how you’re doing.
Content Alerts With the apps posting filters you can choose what content you don’t want to have a record of online, and the app will let know when something sensitive has been posted.
Building a Clear Picture The app collects the photos and mentions of your child from your social networks and lets you see every thing that has been posted.
Multiple Contributors It’s often not just one parent who posts about a child. Friends and family can use one Poster Child account for your child. By linking several social network profiles, your family can build a responsible picture of your child together.

What are we saying about our kids? It’s easy to loose track of how much we post to social networks. The Postchild app keeps all of your child’s data in one place so you can see their whole digital life in one place.

User Story Amanda is a brand new mom. She loves to share moments from her little family’s life, but is concerned about the amount of information she is sharing about her baby’s life. She uses the posterchild app to help her keep track of what she posts.

Share everything
It’s hard to know how much we post over time. Images add up and information grows. The Poster Child app can help you decide how much you want to share about your child and has features that will help you stick to those decisions. It’s easy, answer a few questions and choose a few monthly posting limits and you are all set. You can come back and change your sharing limits at anytime in the settings tab.
