Hello, I am Jana Pretorius. I’m a Candidate Landscape Architect. I received my BSc in Landscape Architecture at The University of Pretoria in 2015. I furthered my studies at the University of Cape Town, where I completed my Masters in Landscape Architecture (MLA) in 2019. I have 2 years working experience in the Landscape profession. I am currently looking tfor an oppertunity to gain more experience and to further my knowledge, skills and relationships in the Landscape Industry of South Africa. I am passionate about the industry, because I know what a vital part space-making is to a rapid urbanizing country. My passion lies in graphic representation, but I know I still have a lot to learn in this criteria. My ideal working environment will be one where I work with a team that can support me to evolve my skills in graphic representation, whether it is In landscape graphics (3Ds, Plans, Sections, elevations, diagrams) or graphic design.

I am very passionate about Architecture and the impact it has on our everyday lives- our surrounds have to make it possible for us to live a happy, healthy, meaningful and productive life. Thank you for showing your interest in my work, I hope you enjoy this compilation of my work over the last 7 years. My portfolio consists of university projects and projects that I worked on when I was working with my previous employers. At the end of the document you will find some illustrations and photographs that I have taken, these will show you a bit more of who I am as a person as this is the things I enjoy to do in my spare time. Thank you.

Biophilic Design
MLA Thesis Project 2019
People have become a lot more subject to a wide range of maladies from stress-related physical diseases, to psychological disorders, all the way to spiritual detachment. As Humans, we co-evolved alongside nature and the natural world. Human beings need contact with nature and the natural world. We need it to be healthy, happy and productive to live meaningful lives. Nature is not optional, it is absolutely necessary for a qualitative urban lifestyle. In order to live an effective pedestrianize living we will have to design compact and dense city to minimize the amount of traveling in between places. But compact and dense cities presents challenges to integrate nature and finding ways to make it possible for people in these environments to still be able to interact with nature and the natural environment on a daily basis. Connection with nature and the impact it has on our overall well-being is extremely important in a developing urban environment. E.O. Wilson, the father of the Biophilia Hypothesis, argues that our sense of belonging today comes from spending time in city parks, from the choices that we make for habitation, and from where people decide to spend their leisure time (Souter-Brown, 2015). Wilson states that we are hard-wired to be in nature, and it helps us to un-pack the fundamental idea of human nature and how people associate with themselves. Biophilic principles can be introduced to the public realm through bringing nature into pedestrianized spaces, creating a natural analogue, and creating vernacular spaces that draws reference to the contextual narratives of Cape Town.

J. Pr etorius
In this project we will look at different ways to re-introduce the natural world back into artificial and urbanized city. The focus will be on the business district of Cape Town, where there is a recurring weekday interaction with the urban environment. Through creating a city park environment it will create a beneficial environment for daily commuters and pedestrians to benefit the mental, physical and spiritual well-being throughout our rapid urbanized city.

Biophilia It is suggested that humans have a genetic predisposition to acquire and then retain liking/attention/approach responses to natural elements and structures in natural environments because it is a favored survival tactic. These approaches links to our primary necessities of survival elements such as food, water and shelter. In ancient times we were roaming a Savannah like landscape that provided us with safety, shelter, food, medicine, stimulants, etc.
Biophobia Humanity has a preparedness to depth/spaciousness in a landscape, this is all connected to risk-related factors that include; surveillance, proximity to hidden threat, and, escape opportunities. Environments like this will usually be avoided due to space restriction, as man dislikes these conditions (Rogers, 1993).

Montague, Ashbury
Masters Project 2019
This design project focuses on the development of a design plan for a local area site and/or precinct. Understand the overall framework or connection to the overall town landscape will be important. The making of any plan involves an exploration into both timeless qualities and contextually relevant factors of its time: it must be responsive to the contextual factors which are connected to its time and place. Connecting local knowledge is seen as an important step in gaining an understanding of the site from a different perspective. The Site :
28
The site is the town of Montagu in the Western Cape, within the Langeberg Municipality. The towns of Worcester, Robertson and Ashton are considered key ‘connector’ towns along the R60 and linked to the R62 by Montagu. Within the Langeberg Municipality there are 5 towns: Robertson, Ashton, McGregor, Bonnievale and Montagu (see the Langeberg Spatial Development Framework, 2014). Montagu sits in a unique ‘intersection’ zone. It is surrounded by magnificent natural environment and sense of place.
Going into the project it was clear that there was a lack of connection between Montagu and 32 Ashbury; the neighbouring settlement of Montagu. Ahsbury provides a big portion of the working force of Montague, but still the connection is lost or missing. The two areas is divided by industrial areas and a golf course that was aimed at the upper class.
The municipality also made some off-site decisions for the new development in Ashbury and has created boundaries that creates unpleasant interaction with the new beneficial additions in Ashbury. The precinct that I focused on in this project is the Municipal public Library that is set in the heart of Ashbury. I chose this site because it is meant to be a utility that is open for the public and can benefit the residents to a great extent. But instead it has created a boundary between surrounds and a unapproachable atmosphere. It carries great potential as it is adjacent to primary schools and Early Childhood Development centers. My goal was to create a public gathering space that could possibly acts as the center of Montagu that stitches the town back together and creates safe gathering areas of multiple purposes.
