INGSTON VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS CENTER THESIS 2013-2014
Thesis Statement This thesis is about the elements of music and their potential use as a generator of architectural form. Specifically, the organization and the structure of the chords, a group of notes played at the same time, and their critical relationship to rhythm and time as a key organizational expression of the form of music. This investigation further explores the chords and the ways that these elements can be used using the major and minor chords. There is potential for the expression of a particular piece of music and distinct differences between the major and minor chords to be understood in terms of light, darkness and the contrast between them. Also, using the system of notes (chords) as the building blocks for the programmatic relationships between the spaces and use the time as a means of regulating the transition between spaces. In this expression to the physical the light and the dark are an expression of the major and the minor and the elements of contrast are studied to show how the movement between the light and dark can be used to show repetition and rhythm in the composition of a building. This composition is inspired by the needs of the people and places that surround it and this can be used to generate architectural form that is both poetic and relevant. The site is In a place that has produced iconic reggae music, there exists a slew of artists that want to be heard and need support in order to continue produce the art forms that has made this island famous. For this thesis I propose an artist colony in order to help support the many artists that lack it. At the Edna Manley School of the Visual and Performing arts island’s school, there are many students that graduate and need a dedicated place to perform. This could be done in collaboration with the JCDC- Jamaica Cultural Development Corporation in order to promote the development of indigenous music forms and prevent many talented artists from going overseas in order to practice their art.

The verandah typology is the typical Jamaican vernacular building typologies and as such the idea of using this on a larger scale in a performance spaces throughout the program was explored in this thesis.
