rowing up in New England and raised by a depression-era baby, I come by my Miser archetype honestly. Thrift was universally admired and money spent only after due deliberation. Clothes were routinely passed from one household to another – never mind that one of the households also owned a ski house and a summer house. That my early forays into fiber art were patchwork quilts – traditionally thrift incarnate – is no accident. The Miser is surrounded by threats great and small, random and targeted,

and believes that the way to security is through material goods, especially money. In this abstract stitched piece, I show how a Miser has built a circular fortress around her possessions in order to be safe in a chaotic world. Projectiles zoom past with dizzying speed; you never know when disaster could strike next. For this piece I sketched out a general composition and then added blind stitching for that chaotic, random feel.
