Angela White KCAI CDA, ObA, BehTrA, has been involved in competitive obedience for over 30 years as a judge, competitor, author, magazine editor and more. She is also an ambassador of the sport in Germany and has been a well respected instructor of both FCI and UK obedience for many years. She has now taken Rally Obedience to heart and has very quickly become a qualified judge, hosted various training days and is now holding regular Rally training sessions. She has guest instructed for other organisations, organised a Rally trial and became something of a Rally record holder when at her second trial she qualified and gained RL1A Ex titles on 2 dogs in the same day. She has recently entered and qualified at level 2A What is Rally? Rally (‘Rally O’ in the USA) is a canine sport derived from elements of competitive Obedience. It differs from Obedience in that handlers and dogs attempt a pre-set course along which signs are placed at up to 15 stations (Level 1). The selection of exercises and design of course is at the judge’s discretion. There is no direction from the judge or steward the signs are all the guidance competitors receive. Handlers walk through the course (without dogs) before the trial starts. There are 3 levels. At Level 1, the lowest level, dogs take part on lead and a loose lead is emphasized. The handler may give encouragement throughout as necessary. More advanced Levels require dogs to compete off lead. Physical or harsh verbal correction is strictly penalised. Elements of Obedience such as group stays, retrieve and scent exercises do not feature. Handlers and Dogs start each round with a perfect score of 200 and deductions are made by the judge for inaccuracies and mistakes in the performance. Progression to the next Level is based on reaching a qualifying standard, there is no requirement to ‘win’. All levels are run in two parts – ‘A’ for competitors who have not yet qualified at that Level, and ‘B’ for those who have. Although based on Obedience many exercises differ significantly from those found in Competitive Obedience and the required precision level is more flexible and therefore more accessible to all. However, Rally will still pose a challenge to handlers and dog and is an excellent alternative or complement to other dog sports. The APDT were the first to organise trials in the UK, but the sport has now officially been taken over by the UK Kennel Club. http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/4562
