What’s Happening for Youth in Golden
Full Service Business Accounting Q: What to look for in an “Accountant” A: As a business owner you worked hard to earn your money. You do not want to hand your books to your accountant, say, “Do my taxes,” and good-bye. You should expect your accountant to do more. A qualified accountant helps managers and owners make decisions drawn from accurate data and informed business knowledge. Accounting is so much more than crunching numbers. Some business owners are inclined to choose a friend or someone who does some accounting, however that strategy won’t work as your business grows and becomes more complex. The term “accountant” is not regulated. Anyone can call themselves an accountant with no formal training or experience. This is why you want to interview your potential accountant. Some things that you want to think about when choosing an accountant are: Determine business your needs: Do you want someone to just handle the books and file taxes or someone to give you advice and be there as your business grows? Communication expectations: How often do
you want to communicate with your accountant? Expectations need to be set at the beginning so they are mutual. Compatibility: You want to feel comfortable talking to your accountant and asking questions. Does that person hear what you are saying? Can you build a trusting relationship with him or her? Referrals and references: Ask other business owners who they use and ask what things their accountant does well for them. Confidentiality: Ask what privacy policies and code of conduct practices are followed by staff. This is a BIG distinction with a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA). A CPA must follow a strict Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics of which confidentiality is key. Credentials: Ask if the accountant has the credentials to sign financial statements and do statutory compliance work. Rates: Ask what they charge and what the fees include. At the end of the interview ask yourself if you feel comfortable with this person.

Vertical lift improves accessibility at Golden Arena Submitted by the Town of Golden One of Golden’s most well used facilities is now more accessible for community members. With the installation of a new vertical lift and electrically operated doors at the main entrance, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District has ensured that the Golden and District Recreation Complex – also known as the Arena – is accessible to all members of the public. “The new lift is a perfect example of the CSRD’s commitment to increasing accessibility in its facilities, says Electoral Area A Director Karen Cathcart. The Federal Government, through the Enabling Accessibility Fund, contributed $38,900 towards the project. The Columbia Basin Trust contributed $30,000 and the balance of funding coming from the CSRD’s capital reserve fund for the Golden Arena. The total cost of the project was $130,000
which also included automatic door openers for the upstairs lounge and main entryway. Local general contractor, Greg McTaggart from Absolutely Hammered Contracting completed the works. “The Golden Arena is one of the true shared services in the community, and it’s great to have the CSRD take the lead on making this project a reality, says Mayor Ron Oszust. “The new vertical lift means that more people can access the lounge, a public space located above the main lobby that is used for a variety of activities, including serving as a heated viewing area for the ice surface below. In addition, the new door openers on the front of the building make it easier to enter and exit. The project’s scope included the installation of the vertical lift, which is accessed from the arena and lands at a walkway that provides entry to the Arena lounge area. The doorway to the lounge required a small amount of reconfiguration to a
window set at one end of the space. In addition to the vertical lift, the project required a fire rated vertical shaft, an elevator pit and machine room. Building system modifications were also necessary to provide for machine room ventilation, additional sprinkler system heads, fire alarm integration and electrical service for the lift. The Arena lounge area features a server, storage, washrooms, mirrored walls and a large floor space designed for active use. The space is available for rent year round and is commonly used by groups such as martial arts, belly dancing, summer camps and general meetings. There are funds budgeted in 2016 for updates to the lounge including new paint, new flooring and increased storage capacity. Come on down to the Golden Arena on Saturday, February 27, to catch the official grand opening of the new lift during the intermission of Golden Figure Skating Club’s Night at the Movies ice show!

Q: What services do you offer at Nourish Clinic? A: I offer relaxation and deep tissue massage sessions during which I combine various techniques that I’ve studied over the last 13 years – deep breathing, Ayurvedic massage, Thai massage, Jin Shin Do (acupressure) and Reflexology. I also offer Hot Stone massage, which is a very warming treatment. I use perfectly warmed basalt stones to ease muscle stiffness and melt away tension. Incorporating the awareness that each thought communicates with every cell in the body, I also encourage the use of positive visualizations and words. I use different techniques in each treatment to meet the needs of each individual client. A popular choice of treatment amongst my clients is the 60 minute massage followed by 15 minutes of Reflexology. Reflexology stimulates all areas of the body including the organs and glands by applying pressure to corresponding areas on the feet. Prenatal massage is also available for the mother-to-be. The treatment focuses on the areas of her choice, while relaxing tension along the whole spine as well as the hips, neck and shoulders. I also offer Hot Stone massage, which is an especially soothing and tranquil treatment. I use perfectly warmed basalt stones to ease muscle stiffness and melt away tension. The massages are complemented by warmed oil and towels. The encouragement of a deeper breath helps to create state of relaxation. Clients are left feeling rebalanced and calm as well as relieved of their muscular tension. Q: Where did you complete your training for these techniques? A: I completed my initial massage training at the Foothills College of Massage Therapy in Calgary in 2002. I studied reflexology with Joan Cosway-Hayes in Calgary. My Jin Shin Do certificate comes from the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Victoria, BC. A month-long course at Wat Po in Bangkok, Thailand learning Thai massage was an incredible cultural experience. My doula certificate was acquired during training in Tofino and through volunteering at a
number of births. I learned the art of abhyanga and shirodhara with an Ayurvedic Practitioner. Last but not least, in 2015 I spent 5 weeks at Shanti Yoga in Nelson, BC, completing my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training which focused on spinal alignment and pranayama (the regulation of breath through various exercises and techniques). Q: Who is your typical client? A: My clients range in age from 5 – 75 and everywhere in between. Some are elite athletes looking to resolve injuries or get rid of lactic acid, others have chronic illness they are seeking to grow out of. Parents find their children are able to focus and relax more easily after a massage. Some people simply see me as part of their regular health and wellness program. The common thread is they all enjoy the quiet and healing environment which is created for them and they appreciate the complete focus they receive. Q: Is there a principle or concept which unites your work? A: Yes. I believe true healing begins when we find a tranquil space to breathe deeply and are able to completely relax our body and mind. Nestled in this place, the nervous system feels safe and nurtured, and knots begin to slowly unwind. This is a process which absolutely involves the dedication and commitment of the person seeking change within their self. Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and
what brought you to Golden? A: I spent my childhood on a farm in Saskatchewan. The day after high school, I moved to Canmore, following my dream of living in the mountains. I have called both Galiano Island and Victoria home as well. World travels have taken me to New Zealand, the Kingdom of Tonga, the Cook Islands, Spain, Morocco, Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysian Borneo. I moved to Golden almost six years ago after spending a season couch surfing between shifts while working for CMH. An avid gardener with a deep love for cooking, I am passionate about all things food. I have a diploma in clothing design, play the accordion and love to sing and dance. Outdoor pursuits of biking, skiing, ski touring, and hiking keep me healthy and happy. I also teach a weekly drop in yoga class on Saturdays at 4:30 at Golden Lotus Yoga, which is above Element Therapeutics. Q: Is there a phrase or quote which inspires you? A: There is a beautiful quote which I often bring to my mind throughout the day from Thich Nat Hahn, “Smile, breathe and go slowly”. I like the simplicity and gentle reminder to enjoy each moment fully and remain present through the breath, sharing that joy with others through a genuine smile. Please visit www.nourishclinic.ca for more information, or to book an appointment with Kerri.

Other people’s kids Janet Crandall-Swaffield Publisher What do parents think, I wonder, when they bundle up their teenagers and send them off to a foreign country? I suppose they’re sending their kids off to an adventure, the adventure of a lifetime, here in Canada. It’s likely a composite feeling, a combination of excitement, trepidation, and more. I once went on my own adventure, so I have a bit of an idea of how it feels to step off the plane and a foreign country. I can’t help but wonder what my parents must have been feeling at the time. But how does it feel to be the hosting family, the ones on the receiving end? Well, that can also be an adventure. Oh yes. These kids come from all different countries, and they come for all different reasons. For many it’s to improve their English, but for others it’s about a year away from home. Looking back over the ten years or so that we had students living with us, I doubt there’s a And it can take time that our kids can really remember heading a while to figure out to school on their own. that the kid isn’t It might not be your first choice, taking taking a lunch to someone else’s kid into your home to live with school because he you for an extended period of time. We started just doesn’t know with a young Korean lad, Moon Seok, who wanted to improve his English. After advertising how to make it. And for many months, the high school had yet to find can’t bring himself a home for him. Since I had lived in Korea, we to ask. Seriously. felt that we might be a good choice, having had But at the end of a taste of the culture and thought we might be the day, it all gets able to bridge the gap a bit. figured out. As it turns out, most of these kids do fairly well on their own. That said, every experience is different. And some kids do land here with little or no English speaking skills. It’s not all fun and games though, sometimes the kid you get doesn’t jive with your family and has to be shuffled to somewhere new, that’s fine. And it can take a while to figure out that the kid isn’t taking a lunch to school because he just doesn’t know how to make it. And can’t bring himself to ask. Seriously. But at the end of the day, it all gets figured out. After hosting for 10 years, we took a break for a bit, but recently had an opportunity to get back into the program. Twin girls - Josefina and Colomba - came from Chile, one to our house and one to a friend nearby, here for only two months, to spend their ‘summer break’. They have represented their family, and their country, well. Our most recent experience, while fairly short, has been no less rewarding, and it’s difficult to believe that these girls will soon be packing up to head for home. Broadening the horizons of our own kids is just one of benefits we’ve had. For the most part, we’ve enjoyed getting to know kids from so many different backgrounds. On Christmas Day, it’s pretty great hearing Merry Christmas in so many different languages. But the biggest reward? Having lifelong friends around the world. These young people grow up and many come back to visit. Knowing we played a role in helping them mature (and learn to make a sandwich or do their own laundry) is significant. It’s something we don’t take lightly. I would encourage you to give it a try. You might just like it!

Slippin’ and slidin’
by Garry Irving Special to Golden This Week
This weather is something else as some places have snow and others do not. It has been interesting trying to outwit Mother Nature. The first part of January I went and got some buckets filled with sand so I could sand our driveway. The weather has been very mild during the day and freezing overnight. So it has been a little of slipping and sliding for us.
Page 7
Over the past couple of weeks I have plowed and sanded the driveway so anyone can get up to the house. Unlike the flat driveway (and short) that we had in the Blaeberry Valley this driveway is gravel and slopes down to the highway. As a consequence the water runs downhill and freezes at night making for some very interesting driving issues. The problem is that when the sand is put on during the day the warm temperatures make it sink through the ice so everything freezes again overnight when the temperature goes down. That makes for some very pesky slippery conditions that only steady warm temperatures can cure. Carol and I were talking and she thought the weather was a bit warmer here in the Cariboo than in Golden. I told her that I keep an eye on the Golden temperatures and it has appears to have been a milder year than normal. The high cost of vegetables has got us thinking that we have to put in a bigger garden this year. It has been a bit of a challenge as we had to have soil brought in. Our garden space produced well last year as it sat in the sunshine most of the day. We are looking forward to an even bigger harvest this season. With the low Canadian dollar driving up the prices in the grocery store I would imagine the seed dispensers will have a busy year.

Carol and I were talking about how communication has changed in recent memory. I can go on the computer and call up DriveBC and look at the web cams of locations all over the province. I quite often look at the cams for Golden, Rogers Pass, Kicking Horse Canyon and into Alberta. It is really handy having those up to the minute views available. The cams are all over the province and I can check on road conditions anywhere as long as I can find a computer. The app is also available for those that have smart phones.
The other thing about communication is how rapid it can be and that is how Carol and I were informed of the loss of Bev Lockhart. Carol worked with Harry at Finning in Golden and we saw them frequently after Harry retired. I think in the next article I will tackle all the changes I saw in the many years that I lived and worked in Golden. Such things as the report on the TCH’s Kicking Horse Canyon in 1991, the paving and construction of the frontage roads and the building of the covered pedestrian bridge over the Kicking Horse River.

Tom King on The Story of Golden, published in 1963
by Duane Crandall Special to Golden This Week The writings of Tom King, as published in his book “The Story of Golden, written in 1963. Continuing on in the series of writings, here is the next section: “Eugene Conture had the next place at the 74 mile on Shuswap Creek. Later Frank Richardson of Athalmer bought it on speculation. Behind this place and farther up the creek, Jim Lambert had a nice farm and his brother, Jack, had one close by. Across the Columbia River from the Spillimacheen Hotel of that day, Mr. George Heffner, a German, had a homestead which for many years now has belonged to Capt. G. W. Edwards, a mining engineer who operated developments in that part of the valley for many years. He recently passed away at the advanced age of 90 years after having lived a very active life almost to the end. He had made his home in West Vancouver the last several years and where his widow still lives. Next place taken up on the west side of the Columbia River and owned by him for many years after I came to the valley, was that of Mr. James Montgomery and now occupied by his two daughters, Jessie and Agnes, the latter being Mrs. Sutherland. A little farther up the river and across from Brisco, Wm. Batt, Baptiste Paul and Ben Able had homesteads. The first mentioned must have had some money put by as he was bringing a sister out in July, 1899, from Ottawa and ordered a side saddle from my boss, Mr. Warren, so the lady could enjoy herself riding the trails which mostly, in those days, led to mining claims. His land wasn’t very productive and, in his isolation, he deteriorated gradually till finally he was taken to a mental institution at the coast. At the time he wore no boots but had his feet tied up in gunny sacks. It was a shocking sight to see him gone
thus as he was quite an intelligent gentleman, courteous and nicely spoken with first I met him. Baptiste Paul had left the Shuswap reserve some years before and located on a nice piece of ground where he put up hay, kept a few cattle, and was much esteemed by the Brisco people. I recall Mr. Alfred Mitchell writing in to Warren’s store (being bookkeeper I read all correspondence that came so addressed) for something he wanted to get for Mr. Paul and he described him as a “White Indian. He meant it as a nice compliment but I don’t know whether he, being Indian, would feel very flattered. But Baptiste was a real good fellow and had three sons who, though they all died in their thirties, were good steady fellows and quite in demand as workers. They were Alex, John and Nick. Alex married the younger daughter of Moses Kinbasket, who, when her husband passed away insisted on a cousin of Alex’s, Mike Paul, marrying her. John took some type of disease that turned his skin black and made him look like a coloured man but it was several years before it became fatal. Nick also was a good worker and quite in demand in the district as a helper. I knew the Indians very well as in 1923 I reconstructed the road from Stoddart Creek to the Athalmer Junction and a mile and a half south of Dutch Creek and two and a half miles near Brady Creek, the latter district then being known as Thunder Hill. I was compelled by the terms of the contract to hire men ‘nearest the operation and I found the Indians very satisfactory. Alex Paul was one of them and no better worker or nicer man of any color was ever on a job — steady, obliging, courteous, wellmannered at table and elsewhere and it was very sad he had to go so young. I became so friendly with the Indians — both Shuswap and Kootenay — that in August, 1931, they did me the honour of putting on a three-day celebration at Golden — stampede, pow-wows and native dances — the latter in the rink building at night and on the park grounds in the daytime — and made me an Indian Chief, “Golden Eagle. In their language, Ak nom lu lam. I have enjoyed the friendship of the Indians of both sexes and many of them I find very fine people. Chief Michel was against the Indians being allowed into beer parlours as he saw that too many of his people would waste their time and substance in drinking, and it has been the ruin of several of them, as with the whites. A few years ago, when I represented this district as M.L.A., a Kootenay Indian of above average intelligence asked me to advocate for the same

rights for them to have liquor by the bottle as other citizens as many of their women, in their desire for liquor would go to bootleggers for it, and who besides the money for it, insisted on a bonus payment which was debauching many of the women of the tribes. He told me he had made a tour of many sections of B.C., Washington and Alberta and found the same type of payment demanded throughout. Mr. George Bramell married a Kinbasket woman many years ago and seemed to live a very satisfied life with her all his years. He was reported to be a son of an Anglican clergyman in England but somehow became to like the lady well enough to marry her. He worked for me on three different jobs and was a good, steady employee. Every Saturday evening his Indian wife
would drive to the job and take him home for the weekend and deliver him back on Sunday evening — sometimes having driven her team fifteen to twenty miles each way. On one occasion she told me that my previous employer, Mr. Warren, had wanted to marry her and rode horseback all the way to Fort Steele to ask her father for her hand because she said she was quite young and thought she wasn’t mature enough to decide. The father’s answer to Mr. Warren’s request was, “No Charlie. She marry white man, I lose my daughter. She marry Indian I still keep my daughter. Years later, however, she did marry the white man above mentioned, and she served him well. Mr. Bramell died several years ago — she, about four years ago or so, at over eighty years of age. While on the subject of Indians, I think it should be recorded here, before leaving the comments on these people, of the courage of one of the Kootenays — Mr. Joe Jimmy — in treeing a full-grown cougar and then climbing up the tree to face it with as meagre a weapon as could be devised. When the cougar went up the tree Joe took a shoe lace from his rubber boot, took his jackknife out of his pocket and tied it with the shoe lace to a stick he picked up which was about four feet long and tapered from an inch and three-quarters to a little over an inch, and climbed the tree to face the cougar with his improvised weapon. As he climbed nearer and nearer the cougar the latter went a few feet out on a limb and turned to face Joe who jabbed him with the knife in a vulnerable spot on his chest till the cougar, though snarling and looking each moment as if he might pounce on Joe, thought the better part of valor as is said was safety on the ground so he jumped down into the snow and made off. Joe, not to be outdone, hurried down after him and followed the blood trail in the snow and not over fifty years away found the animal in the throes of death, which came soon. We read in story books of such courageous acts, but based only on imagination and not on fact. When a race can breed such men, what a pity so many of them do not take their responsibilities more seriously. But to most of them, tomorrow doesn’t matter. Joe gave me the shoe lace and knife as a souvenir of his encounter but, of course, the stick was just tossed aside. Two or three pictures of him and the dead cougar appeared in the Vancouver Sun along with the story. I am sorry I have not these as among my souvenirs. ... Continued next week

Ice Cream for Breakfast: The light that is love by Sarah Elizabeth Special to Golden This Week Love - according to Paul Anka, Madonna, Ashlee Simpson and Deon Jackson - makes the world go around; according to Michael Bolton, it’s a wonderful thing; and, I believe it was the Beatles who said love is all you need. While the root of many love songs lives in the genre of romantic love, love exists in many areas of our lives and is definitely a major player in the lives of parents. Since Valentine’s Day just passed, I thought I would, in its wake, take a moment to recognize love. After all, what is parenting without it? There are billions of us living on this planet and I believe the majority of the human species got here because of love - or specifically, through acts of love. When I’m in a busy place, like a shopping mall or a music festival, I can’t help but look around and think “Wow, there are so many of us. That’s a whole lotta love.” So we all, each one of us, represent love. Therefore you are love, I am love and we are love. Isn’t love lovely? A wise woman once said there’s more kinds of love in the world than romantic love –something, in its obviousness, I had never really considered or took time to think about. The idea reigns true for me just as much now as a non-single parent, as it did when I was single and a non-parent. Once I got over dwelling on the need for romantic love in my life, I realized how much I loved the “ordinary” things that are a part of my life - like my guitar, my books, my friends and family, my cats and so much more. Through love comes growth. They say you can Perhaps we, as individuals grow because of love, such as through loving a child and through the love of a child. Brighter Life: Retirement planning for couples For couples, retirement planning is about more than just saving money. It’s also about reconciling lifestyle dreams and wishes that might not match.
by Jim Yih, It’s a Brighter Life.ca When it comes to retirement planning, the thought of doing what you want, when you want, where you want and how you want is ideally suited to singles. But when couples are doing the planning together, that message might be a little more challenging. When I think of retirement planning for couples, I recall a conversation I had with a lovely twosome many years ago when I was a financial advisor. I asked them what they planned to do in their retirement. The husband excitedly and quickly responded with “WE plan to travel as much as we can. WE plan to golf together around the world. And WE plan to try new things like scuba diving. His wife paused and then responded with this: “I’m okay with travelling, but I have two amazing grandkids here at home who I want to spoil rotten. I don’t golf and I don’t really want to spend five hours on a golf course listening to you curse and swear because your shots were not perfect. And you can go scuba diving if you want, but I plan to lie on the beach with a book. While it may not appear so, these two were very much in love and were looking forward to their retirement years. Despite their different responses, they still wanted to retire together.

WE and ME If you think about it, retirement is an individual, not a couples event. For two working spouses,
there are two separate retirements that happen in the same household. And more often than not, they happen at different times. Most couples don’t retire at the exact same time. One of the challenges for couples is the idea that they are going to retire and spend every waking moment together. (How does that sound to you?) While couples may want to spend time together, it’s important to understand that no matter how much we love our spouses and even like spending time together, we all need some time and space apart. I call it “ME time or “alone time. Couples may find more success in retirement by thinking not only about things they want to do together (WE) but also about things they might like to do apart (ME). One of the tools I suggest for couples planning for retirement is a brainstorming exercise where each spouse takes a pen and paper and writes down all the things he or she wants to do in retirement from a ME perspective. The idea is that each spouse makes a retirement wish list independently of the other. It’s about being selfish and coming up with a ME list instead of doing it together and coming up with a WE list – and being selfish isn’t always easy for spouses to do. Communication is the key Once the ME lists are done, spouses then need to come together and start comparing their lists. Some things on the lists are bound to be similar. These similarities can represent things that couples can do together. Differences can also be very powerful. They can represent things that
spouses can do when they need some time away from each other. The exercise emphasizes that retirement planning is about more than just money. It’s so important to think about and design an entire retirement life. The point behind the exercise is really to foster conversations about lifestyle and help couples understand that retirement dreams don’t have to perfectly align. It’s about helping couples talk. Too often, I have seen people who assume they know what their spouse wants to do in retirement. I always say, “Don’t assume. Instead, ask questions and discuss. If you and your spouse haven’t started to plan for your retirement yet, it’s not too late (or too early). An advisor can help you create a plan that will work for both of you.
