Tog Recreation Services launches new Volunteer program Submitted by the Town of Golden

Recreation Services, Jordan Petrovics. “That’s why we also launched our NEW Volunteer platform this year! We want to make it easy for people to offer programming of their choice! The volunteer program works hand-in-hand with the new $5 drop-in fee and Universal Recreation Pass. The more volunteers that come on board, the more programming we can offer to the community!”

With the winter season upon us and temperatures starting to drive people indoors, ToG Recreation Services is providing plenty of ways to stay active and warm! It’s been a busy year for the Recreation Services Department, with a lot of changes and some great new initiatives that fall inline with the department’s mission to facilitate a healthy and vibrant community for residents and visitors through effective operations of all Town facilities and support for existing and new user groups. We believe that community buildings like the Rec Plex are important because they provide the opportunity for residents to stay active. They also provide a variety of activities for those that want to add to or supplement their winter routine!

“The ToG Recreation Services Team wants to do more with the community’s facilities and to do more, we need your help,” says Manager of Recreation Services, Jordan Petrovics. “That’s why we also launched our NEW Volunteer platform this year!

“We also introduced two new drop-in programs this month at the Rec Plex – a just-for-fun, co-ed adult soccer night and a non-competitive youth soccer night for children 12 and under.” This fall we launched our Universal Pass Program and $5 drop-in pricing, in an effort to compliment the programing offered at the Mount 7 Rec Plex and Golden Arena. This season, a $130-membership - or $5 drop-in fee – gets you access to any drop-in activity offered at the facilities. That includes badminton, volleyball, basketball, European Football and Winter Walking. We also introduced two new drop-in programs this month at the Rec Plex – a just-for-fun, co-ed

It is easy to become a volunteer! Simply get in touch with us and let us know what kind of program you would like to facilitate. Then, sign up to be a volunteer! We will provide the liability coverage required to run a program and will set you up with access to the facility. You only have to show up and facilitate, collect drop-in fees – and play! It will take only an hour of your week and you get the benefit of taking part in an activity you enjoy! The Recreation Services Department is looking for your ideas on how to grow existing drop-in programming and introduce new activities. Be a part of the action, for yourself, your family and friends! ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas ...’

Th isnWeekTh Golde isnWeek Golde '3&&

Wow, that first major snowfall this week really caught me off guard! Funny how a change in the weather can change our attitude toward the season. What I mean is, today is Nov. 20th already, which means that Christmas is just over a month away. Where did the time go? It seems like only yesterday it was summer, and we were complaining about the heat. Perhaps it’s a sign of my age, the older I get the faster time seems to fly by. A few days ago, I was all sorts of skeptical about Christmas decorations coming out of boxes, and holiday music starting to play on radio stations. It felt like it was way too early to be decorating for the holidays. But now with all this snow, I’m in full swing for the season. I think I’m not the only to be reluctant, many people struggle with what feels lik the increasing commercialization of Christmas. I’m a firm believer that Christmas is what you make of it. I once spent Christmas in a foreign country, it was 1992. Not only was it a foreign country, away from my family and friends, but it was a place where, at the time, they didn’t celebrate Christmas at all. Not. At. All. Notta. I had only been there about two months, “I once spent Christmas and by this time I had settled in to my job in a foreign country, and living quarters. The mid-month air raid it was 1992. Not only siren still made my hair stand on end a bit, but even that I was getting used to. was it a foreign country, The youngest of the foreigners by about away from my family and 10 years, I had little idea how spending Christmas away from home was going to friends, but it was a place affect me. where, at the time, they We were a collection of primarily didn’t celebrate Christmas Americans, with some British and Canadians in the mix, an age range of at all. Not. At. All. Notta. mostly 30s and 40s. And one 21-year-old, me. For many of these ex-pats, Christmas was a day off from teaching, and an excuse to party. Judy, a missionary from London, had a sneaky feeling that I might find myself quite emotional on that day, and she went to quite an effort to create an event where we could feel a connection to home. There was no Christmas tree, no turkey dinner, no candy canes. And almost no gifts. (I was in charge of stockings.) But there was a special dinner, and a few Christmas lights as I recall. New friends suddenly became important friends, and we enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate with each other. We made the best of the day with what we had to work with, and the ‘spirit of Christmas’ did the rest. Now, that was 23 years ago now, and I imagine things have changed significantly in South Korea since I was there. There is likely evidence of Christmas everywhere during what we know as the holiday season. I will always remember that Christmas I spent away from my family. And I know first-hand that Christmas really can be what you make of it. If decorating early and buying tons of gifts works for you, that’s great. Perhaps you’re talented enough to do all hand-made gifts. Amazing. If baking up a storm is your thing, that special recipe that everyone waits all year for, go at it. Perhaps celebrating the birth of Christ with special church services or Midnight Mass is part of your tradition. Whatever it is, I hope you make the most of whatever opportunity comes your way, whatever your situation might be.

Ice Cream for Breakfast: A different perspective by Sarah Elizabeth Special to Golden This Week

interested in seeing what Mommy would do if I shined the light in her eyes. She squinted and asked me not to do that. I tried it on myself and thought it was funny. Then I needed my daily, middle-of-the-night, three-course meal, which consisted of cereal, toast and oatmeal. Mommy does lots of stuff for me.

The other day my Mommy said she, “misses the olden days” sometimes. I’m not sure what that means, but afterwards she started dancing and talking about something called, “the club.” I started dancing too. Me and my Mommy dance together sometimes. She said she’s confused about what twerking is. That people called it something else when she was younger and it never led to good things on account of all the “hip thrusters” that interrupted the fun dancing. I don’t know, Daddy says, “twerking” worked out really well for Beyoncé. Then they both looked at me and said they weren’t sure if they should be talking about “twerking” in front of me. I have no idea what it means. I’m two!

“My Mommy says she imagines the world will be a lot different when I grow up as it is now since she was young and twerking was a different thing altogether.”

“She gave me a flashlight once when I couldn’t sleep. She showed me a bunny hopping on the roof above our heads. I wasn’t really interested. I was more interested in seeing what Mommy would do if I shined the light in her eyes. She squinted and asked me not to do that. I tried it on myself and thought it was funny.”

I’m Ruby Bea, also known as “my daughter.” The parents let me use the computer when we go on long car rides. Something they also say they aren’t sure if they should, but mommy argues times have changed and technology rules. I can’t seem to get Curious George to work right now, so I thought I would write to you, just like my Mommy. I love my Mom. We’re always together. She’s mine! The other day Daddy tried to give my Mom a hug and I told him, “No! That’s my Mommy!” He looked a little surprised when I sprawled myself across the

floor in protest of having to share her with him. When they finally gave in to my demands, I got up and then we hugged, but not Daddy for reasons already explained. I love him too, it’s just different. Mommy calls me a “night owl.” I guess that’s because I like to stay up late. Mommy has a hard time with that, but I’m living it up while I’m young – sleeping when I need to sleep; eating when I need to eat. My Mom says soon

enough I’ll be in school learning and meeting new people, then I’ll get a job and life will be very different from what it is now. Now includes naps and snuggles and I have no complaints about that - except when Mommy says it’s time to turn out the lights and close our eyes. I have a big problem with that. She gave me a flashlight once when I couldn’t sleep. She showed me a bunny hopping on the roof above our heads. I wasn’t really interested. I was more

My Mommy and I are a lot alike except for one thing. She likes lots of blankets and warm clothing and I do not. Not one bit. I wish I could have told her that when I was born. You see, I was born in June and my Mom must have thought I was a cold baby because she kept piling on the blankets to make sure I was safe when I napped. She says it was a cold and rainy summer that year. These days she keeps trying to make me wear shirts and pants, but now I refuse outright and when the going gets tough, I sprawl myself on the ground in protest. It usually works. Sometimes I don’t protest at all, especially when I get to go somewhere fun, like the swimming pool or the park, even then though, it would be nice to go just as me. When I grow up I might write the Prime Minister and ask him to help make Canada a place where naked time is acceptable at all times and in all locations. I find getting-dressed time difficult. I would argue it’s stressful. Not having to put clothes on takes that stress away and not having to buy and maintain clothes saves time and money. I think it makes a lot of sense and perhaps our Prime Minister may agree, though Mom says he has a lot of other things to worry about. My Mommy says she imagines the world will be a lot different when I grow up as it is now since she was young and twerking was a different thing altogether. Mommy says cell phones were only used by people in a place called Hollywood and by people called Doctors, and you couldn’t take pictures with them AND they didn’t fit into anyone’s pocket. I guess that means cell phones grow smaller over time, like how I grow bigger over time, except the other way around. I’ve been watching my Mommy’s cell phone, but it has not shrunk at all. I sure have grown though. Mommy said even my toes are bigger than they were last week. I guess I’ve learned a thing or two in my two years of life so far. I’m still trying to figure out what “twerking” is though.

By Kevin Press, BrighterLife.ca Canadians believe employers have a responsibility to support their employees’ health, both physical and psychological. That’s from a new study, the Sun Life Canadian Health Index, released today. More than four in five said employers are responsible for supporting physical health (54% said “some responsibility; 31% said “significant responsibility). A statistically equal number said the same about psychological health (54% said “some responsibility; 32% said “significant responsibility).

“Still, there is room for progress.

Among working Canadians, 24% said their employer provides no support for their physical health. Roughly the same amount — 29% — said the same about support for psychological health. More than half (57%) said their employer doesn’t offer a wellness program and another 13% don’t know. These opinions are held consistently, across the provinces and among Canadians of different age groups. The fact that three in 10 Canadians believe employers have a “significant responsibility to support employee health, along with the decision by very many employers to invest in the promotion of physical and psychological health in the workplace speaks to an important development in the relationship between employers and employees in today’s economy. Employers spend in these areas because healthy employees are more productive and because Canadians expect their employer to provide this support. There’s a strong alignment of interests here that benefits both groups.

Still, there is room for progress. Among working Canadians, 24% said their employer provides no support for their physical health. Roughly the same amount — 29% — said the same about support for psychological health. More than half (57%) said their employer doesn’t offer a wellness program and another 13% don’t know. Those numbers don’t add up. A colleague in our Group Benefits business unit tells me the actual percentage of Canadian employers that sponsor a wellness plan of one kind or another is close to 90%. That’s based on a study of organizations with 50 or more employees. It’s not clear from the data why so many working Canadians have these false impressions. The lack of awareness means that good programs are going unused, which is to say money and services that employees are entitled to are being left on the table. That serves no-one’s interests.

History Column - Many changes in Golden since 1960! boarding house. It looks small in this photo but it was a big building. It is one of the buildings that I remember from the ’50’s. It was originally built for what the name implies, a boarding house for many of the employees of the CRL. When the mill closed the boarding house was sold and it became a residence. It was home for many years for the Dahlberg family.

“One other point while still on the south side of the river, if you look at the present location of Durand Manor, you will see something on its location, but it isn’t Durand because it wasn’t built until 1981. Instead, what is in the picture is tennis courts.”

by Duane Crandall Special to Golden This Week Our history feature this week is a bit of an experiment. We are publishing this airphoto from 1960, but we are not really sure how well it is going to reproduce through the printing process. Hopefully it reproduced well, but if not we will try again later. In trying to decipher the photo one thing you might look for is Lady Grey School. That will give you 9th St. South and you can go from there.

“The first is at the south end of town where there is some vacant land with what appears to be some lines on it. I believe that that is the lumber storage area from the old Columbia River Lumber (CRL) Company mill. It is surprising that the lines from the stringers that the lumber was piled on were still there in 1960, since the mill closed in 1927, 33 years earlier.” I am not a Golden native but have been visiting here since about 1958 and have lived in the area since 1974. That gives me some background but not nearly enough to know everything about this picture. And some things certainly catch my interest, so I have tried to fill in some of the blanks for those of us who were not here in ’60. The first is at the south end of town where there is some vacant land with what appears to be some lines on it. I believe that that is the lumber storage area from the old Columbia River

Aerial photo of Golden, circa 1960. Lumber (CRL) Company mill. It is surprising that the lines from the stringers that the lumber was piled on were still there in 1960, since the mill closed in 1927, 33 years earlier. Also, thinking of

the CRL, if you go back to the south end of town, the southernmost street, now 14th, at the west end of the street and on the north side you will see an L-shaped building. That is the old CRL

While on the subject of sawmills, go north down what is now 5 Ave., down by the airport, and if you look close to the Kicking Horse River, you will see something that looks industrial, and that was a sawmill operated by Vic Franzen. He had previously had one just across the street from the present Legion. You will notice that the present airport is nowhere to be seen in this photo. It was still located just across the Kicking Horse River. Most of its area is not in this photo, but it ran roughly parallel to the present road to the golf course and ski hill. If you live on 5th, 6th or 7th Streets South now you probably won’t be able to find your house. It looks like there were a couple of houses in the area but most of that area is all new since 1960. One other point while still on the south side of the river, if you look at the present location of Durand Manor, you will see something on its location, but it isn’t Durand because it wasn’t built until 1981. Instead, what is in the picture is tennis courts. On the north side of the river you will notice that the level crossing over the CPR tracks is there, but also that the Golden Arms Hotel is not yet there. The Golden Arms was located on the treed corner lot, on the east side of the tracks, just north of the crossing. Removal of the crossing when the overpass was put in just north of the present Petro-Can bulk station was a severe economic disadvantage for the hotel and it eventually closed. You will notice some buildings located where the present IGA supermarket is now located, but it is not IGA. The Department of Highways was located there for many years.
