WILLIS AVENUE COMMUNITY GARDEN COMPLETED JULY 2014
Emily Kinsolving .
The renovation of Willis Avenue Community Garden was a landmark for NYRP as the first garden designed completely in-house with full construction documents and specifications. The design honors the garden’s past as an example of grass roots activism and Puerto Rican vernacular architecture in the Bronx while encouraging a future of increased, more diverse community use. The design reconfigures the space to better accommodate garden’s many activities, including extensive urban agriculture, family gatherings, hog roasts, and a wild
party at the terminus of the Bronx’s Puerto Rican Day Parade. In addition to serving current program, the flexible kit-of-parts design of garden elements enables adaptation over time. User-modifiable features include a trellis with interchangeable panels for vines or public art, a system of customizable accessories for the raised garden beds, and the social hub of the garden, a kit-of-parts Casita. The Casita was designed by TEN Arquitectos in collaboration with NYRP and was shown in Architectural Digest’s June 2014 Issue.

LA CASITA COMMUNITY GARDEN COMPLETED OCTOBER 2014
This garden responds to the design challenge of reinvigorating a stale, cluttered space controlled by a single domineering community member. Simple geometry and clean lines are complemented by sophisticated stamen-heavy blooms which invite close observation
and provide sustenance for hummingbirds throughout the seasons. The garden is now a popular spot for lunches and events such as tailgates and a haunted Halloween event for neighborhood children.

safe, clean soil excused the construction of raised beds which were carefully deployed to furnish the same square footage for crops. By reigning in the formerly amorphous space used for agriculture, previously overlooked land could be repurposed for other activities to be enjoyed by old and new garden visitors alike, such as barbecues with friends or peoplewatching amongst fragrant blooms.
SEAGIRT BOULEVARD
After Superstorm Sandy inundated this garden with raw sewage-tainted seawater, NYRP launched a rapid renovation effort. A compressed timeline prohibited NYRP’s typical community engagement process, precluding drastic changes to the garden. Before the storm, Seagirt was used primarily by urban agriculturalists vehemently dedicated to row cropping directly in the soil, a practice NYRP had unsuccessfully discouraged for years. The necessity to provide

103RD STREET GARDEN EXPANSION PENDING FUNDING
When NYRP had the opportunity to exchange air rights for a corner plot of land on Park Avenue adjacent to our existing 103rd Street Community Garden, a design for a potential addition to the garden was generated to attract a funder. The garden’s existing quadrants, designed by
