Auction Program A Benefit Supporting Northern California Children with Life-Threatening and Chronic Illnesses, Developmental Disabilities and Youth-At-Risk.
This year, in partnership with the Wells Fargo Foundation and the Forever Young Foundation’s new endeavor, Sophie’s Place, TTFF was able to launch a Mobile Music Therapy program for children at camp and in local hospitals. Each week at camp, our team of board certified music therapists engage children in song writing, singing, playing, moving to, and listening to music to help alleviate chronic pain and aid in communication. They also help children share their stories, build confidence and self-esteem, and inspire hope and creativity. In the spirit of Sophie’s Place, TTFF has purchased a Mobile Music Therapy van to bring music to children who are homebound or patients in local hospitals. Stay up to date on our Mobile Music Therapy program by “Liking” us on Facebook.
Welcome and thank you for joining us for

The Taylor Family FoundaTion’s director of development, Sonya Wilson, began working for the organization as a volunteer in 1993. We asked her about the contributions volunteers make and how they find inspiration. What can a person who volunteers for one day a year do to help?
For us, helping with day in the Park. This event raises funds for kids to come to camp each year. We have close to 250 volunteers that day, who help with parking, serving champagne, being spotters at the auction, and cleaning up after the event. We get so many return volunteers, it’s amazing. some of them have come all 14 years. Do you work with people who started volunteering for a day, and now volunteer more often?
angie Cordero came as a guest to day in the Park a few years ago, and decided to volunteer. now she collects donations throughout the year for the auction. last year, the oakland raiders gave her a Community Quarterback award, which brought in $10,000 for the foundation. We have about 12 people who volunteer every week. Do your volunteers work with kids at Camp Arroyo?

T all beGan in 1991, when elaine Taylor saw children with aids being underserved by hospitals and ostracized by a society that didn’t understand their disease. so she organized a fundraiser to help build treatment facilities. but then she watched the money she had raised disappear into the bureaucracy of a new york–based charity, and decided to start her own foundation. “The new york office said, ‘you will never do it,’” says Taylor, beaming. “That was all the motivation i needed.” since then, The Taylor Family Foundation has raised $12.4 million and built Camp arroyo, a state-of-the-art outdoor complex in livermore that every year hosts about a thousand
campers with life-threatening illnesses. Taylor does everything from custodial duties to cooking up fundraisers—at the foundation’s annual auction, day in the Park, dinners in her diablo home went for $20,000. This year’s day in the Park raised $2.3 million, and the foundation was a beneficiary of dave matthews’s recent Golden Gate Park show. but, as Taylor says, those dollars translate into an even greater reward: the smiles on campers’ faces. “When you see an 11-year-old boy with permanently casted legs who’s usually confined to a wheelchair running through the meadow,” she says, “there’s no greater thrill.” The Taylor Family Foundation, 5555 Arroyo Road, Livermore, (925) 455-5118, www.ttff.org.
Volunteers put together goodie bags for the campers and prepare food for snack time. of course, everyone loves being there with the kids. it’s the fruition of what we’re doing here. When they get to see the kids climbing on the ropes course, swimming in the pool, and hugging other campers on the last day of camp and saying, “i’ll see you next year,” [the volunteers] know they are making a difference. What’s the most inspirational moment of your year?
every year at day in the Park, all the kids from camp—kids with hiV, heart disease, diabetes, skin disease, [those] in the special olympics—come marching in together. it’s an amazing moment. Any advice for someone who wants to volunteer, but doesn’t know where to start?
Go with what’s in your heart. Then, make the phone call to an organization, a hospital, or a volunteer center. ask what their needs are, ask if they have any special events. Tell them your skill set and what you’re hoping to gain from the experience. let them know what you are able to provide as far as time and services. my favorite thing is when volunteers come in, finish their work, and ask, “What can i do next?”

Meet the Diablo woman who brings joy and friendship to the children who need it most.

n the summer of 1990, the aiDs epidemic was ravaging the country, with no cure in sight. ten-year-old Ryan White, who had been ostracized after contracting the virus from a blood transfusion, had passed away in april. Here in the bay area, paranoia—and infection rates—were soaring. ¶ that summer, an East bay family decided to do what they could to help children hit with this deadly disease. ¶ in august, Elaine and barry taylor hosted a fundraising party dubbed Day in the Park in their lafayette backyard. the grassroots event raised a surprising $56,000—and led to the creation of the taylor Family Foundation later that year. ¶ Now living in Diablo, the taylors have raised more than $15 million for children in need with their Day in the Park fundraisers. ten years ago, they helped open Camp arroyo in livermore—the only permanent camp in Northern California to host programs for children with HiV/aiDs, and other life-threatening ailments. thanks to the taylor Family Foundation, these programs are free for every child who comes to camp. ¶ to recognize these remarkable achievements, Diablo wanted to get the story from Elaine taylor, the heart and soul of Camp arroyo. We sat down with her as she was preparing auction items and menu selections for this year’s Day in the Park on august 29. here is her story. a s to l d to
