“Intersect” Cardboard, basswood and balsa, 38 X 26 X 6” Cornell Summer College 2017

For this project, I was given the operational word “intersect”. Utilizing the unique makeup of the conjugated cardboard, I slid each stick of basswood through the gap within the cardboard to intersect two different materials from the very core. By repeating/ omitting this step in various orientations, I was able to create a multi-directional space of different levels of privacy.

A second iteration of the cube, this model responds to and grovws from a sliding door, hoping to use the latter’s mobility to create intersections to the next level. https://youtu.be/w5nPVdKNSV0 - B slides towards A - B begins to intersect with A - Their intersection activates C

An Orange Dichotomy Plastic, wire, cardboard, spray paint and heat gun 20 X 28 X 8” March - April 2017

During months of salmon surveying in my junior year of high school, I was able to learn about the life cycle of salmon and observe them swimming, resting and spawning in local creeks. Because of the enormous amount of energy spent during their upstream migration, most of the salmon die after reproduction.

59

60

However, I find their arduous journey against the clock an intruding dichotomy between the continuous and the transitory. Although each salmon’s life is seemingly negligible, this entire life cycle created by the individuals proliferates. While each salmon has it’s own path, the density created by this orange overhang mystifies the stream with its fleeting romance and ultimate demise.

The Head Oil paint on canvas, 18 X 24” 2017

Contrary to my other conceptual exploration of the salmon cycle, this oil painting is a literal approach to simply examine a salmon’s head.

Highway 99 Charcoal and conte, 18 X 24” October, 2017

In this drawing I intended to explore the relationship between the transitory and the continuous on a more personal level. Bearing a close resemblance to the dichotomy of the salmon cycle, my continuous growth as a person can also be examined through fleeting fragments of individualized experiences. A reflection of my past, the drawing then becomes a hybridized map of a series of places that have a significant impact on who I am today.
