Located on a heavily wooded hillside overlooking Beebe Lake, the house consists of a simple kitchen, a bath, a two-person bedroom and an earthen floor to the east, all of which could be divided into its own space by a set of curtain walls if need be. Following the profile of the slope, the roof is strategically punctuated at three places to best preserve the existing trees.

A wooden tower standing on the west end of the city, Ithaca Twelve is an artist residency embedded in a forest of cores in their various forms. Using wood as a more sustainable alternative, the project challenges the traditional approach to high rise buildings not only materially but also characteristically, diversifying the idea of core in each of the 12 floors: to house circulation, archives, to erect a gallery wall, a shelf, an attachment of studio, an extension of living space...

Phi Bonsecours year

fall
2020
A proposal for Phi Bonsecours in Old Montreal, the project, done in collaboration with studio colleague Canna Zhang, explores the fluidity between art and public life in the city. By strategically alternating the old with the new, the proposal then introduces two interstitial spaces sandwiched in between as the third element, opening up the center to the public as much as possible to foster unexpected encounters between artists and audiences. Above the ground, circulatory devices such as the bridges and the plates are scattered across the center to reestablish the similar meandering experience. During the day, the built and the unbuilt spills out into one another, bustling with numerous events and programs; at night, the interstitial spaces become an urban lantern, continuing its dialogue with the city while attracting curious passersby with its digital media display.

Made from recycled shipping containers, the naughty caterpillar is an itinerant creature that is constantly navigating through places, occasionally stopping at temporary destinations for carnivalesque purposes. On finer days, a couple of inflatable friends join the show to keep him company and add more excitement to the scene.

Our project is called pancake XL. It is about blending, bubbling and popping. it relates to its site by dripping onto the park and streets nearby. Our hope is to mix all the programmatic ingredients of the urban scene into the pan and we see our creation contributing an upgraded recipe to the context of New Orleans creole culture and a more hybrid lifestyle.

Imagining Cornell in 50 years, this project envisions a future in which the campus is not only locally rewilded but also well-integrated with the rest of the Ithacan community. While incrementally reinventing parking lots into pockets of green spaces and implementing a new transportation system that replaces cars with high-speed rail, gondola lifts and electric scooters, the project also proposes to upgrade Schoellkopf field into a food-producing superstadium that would eventually hyperlocalize the whole community.

This project explores the idea of bamboo cantilever. Instead of using traditional cantilever, the project takes advantage of bamboo’s active bending property and its light weight to generate a new cantilever condition where one can start to manipulate the curve to create a variety of spaces, such as a bench to sit on, a roof to linger under ...
