Narrative on board

Concept This is an experiment model that combined the idea of time movement capture and present narrative with light and shadow. It applied the layering of movement from previous model and created multi-scenes on single face. The narrative in the model is referred to the walk experience I did in the beginning of semester one, which it is about how I was chasing after a person through the traces in an audio.

Layer of story

1. Build up the layer as the scenario begin

5. The gallery facade, stone wall, and the bush in the church garden

2. Pink flowers appeared in my walk

6. 2nd gallery facade layer, the present person, road sign and McDonald sign

3. More layers on the starting of the scene

7. Gallery interior, newspaper mentioned in dierent locations

4. The bench is referring to multi scenes and some yellow flowers were mentioned in the audio

8. The turnable wheel with banana peel and cigarette, Liverpool street upper level railing

9. 2nd bush in the church garden, the voice owner

13. Brick lane’s building, disappeared restaurant

10. construction site’s scaffolding, rainny day in my walk

14. Liverpool Street Station glazing roof top

11. The train in Liverpool Street Station

15. Water drop in covered scaffolding tunnel

12. The tunnel, kfc, sunny day in audio

Although the scene should be starting from left to right, front to back, some of scenes have pushed forward to combine with other scenes when considering the massive layer would affect the shadow quality.

Material Testing Hide and seek behind the white board

Pretend to be

Be-hide

Cut and replace with cutton and cutting lines to draw out the cloud shape to see whether method has a stronger shadow texture.

Reconstructed form of the tissue paper with PVA glue to make those creases firmer and placed behind the white board under lighting.

The cutton is light enough to allow light and shadow come through to create varies shading level to enrich the texture.

The result shows a gradation of shading depends on the distance between the tissue paper and the card board.

Be-hide with colour

Strips

Placed a leaf behind white card board and test under light source. The colour and the edge of the leaf are sharp, instead, the lea pattern is blur and not obvious.

3 sets of strips exploring on lighting control. 1. Cutting lines, limited light comes through those lines created “draw with light” scenario. 2. Cutting a larger area, use on the area that too dark to show the lightbox effect. 3. A space between 2 cutting lines by pulling the middle card board backward created a gradation of lighting level. Glassine paper placed between the board and light source formed a “noise” atmophere when light comes through.

Hand peel & hand cut

Hidden message

Both board edge and the board thickness are hand peeled treated. Hence The board edge is rough and the board skin contains darker and lighter parts when it placed under the light. The hand cut is to show the unique cut out without guidelines and testing the thinest cut out can be.

Draw on the back of white board and it can only be seen under the light source.

Pretend to be 2

Mirror

The texture of maya paper 270gm is similar to the 300gm white card board but its transparency is much higher than card board. Hence, I tried to replace a few layers of card board into maya paper in the lightbox model to achieve different effect and lighting.

Mirror is one of the way to reflect light. A small scenario model located under the light source. Compare to the upper image, the lower image contain a glow effect. Lower image: a mirror board is placed with an angle in between the layers in model. Also there is a cut out hole on the 2nd board in order to get the direct light reflect on the model.

1

Gradation of light: the multi- layers created a gradation of lighting level to represent to depth of the tunnel. Shape light: shape light represent the end of tunnel. The shape light also comes with the shape shadow that present the object clearly.

2

Mid-light: the light is clear enough to show the effect but not in the glowing level.

3

low light: the light is in a blur and unclear efect that represent the disappointed restaurant that mentioned in the audio

4

Shape shadow: created a pure dark layer

5

Pattern shadow: the partly peeled off whiteboard allow limited lighting to come through and the shadow below the clouds is reflecting the cotton’s texture.

6

Mid-shadow: the shadow shows a darkness in between the pure dark and the light dark.

7

Diffuse light: the tracing paper created a blur effect for light to come through.
