Movement and narrative in layers
In order to explore the potential of creating narrative in light and shadow, I began to study on how to present time and movement. I did a walk in London followed by an audio and I drew out a narrative of my experience and the audio described journey. Inspired by ‘Déjà Vu’ from Pia Männikkö, I separated them into different layers and arranged them followed by the sequence of the audio to perform a unique story.

Material shading study Material reflection and deflection
A. Stone
B. Soil
The shadow shown that the resin is reflecting lighting from the lighting source and the non-smooth surface of stones had modified the shadow’s texture.
The soil is collected in the farm next to the remained sugar refinery. Soil under the light that created an interesting reflection rather than shadow drop. The reflection looked like bacteria under microscope.
C. Sugar The Domino brown sugar has fully absorted the light leaving no light to come through. The creases transformed from the clear film are adding shadows on the resin surface as a darker contrast.
The resin set is a material study to explore how materials reflect and deflect light to create textural shadows. All resin was taken out from molds and placed on clean film when before they dried. The clean film creases later transformed on the resins to construct uneven and unique surfaces.
D. White/Brown Sugar It is a combination of white and brown sugar. The part I am interested in is the the reflection created by the sugar and the clear form.
E. Plant Collected leaf and coriander from the nearby farm. The result is interesting in both reflection and shadow down. They contains a contrast of the lighter and darker versions with dierent patterns.
F. Metal The foil paper is referring to the metal tanks in site for sugar processing. The foil paper partly reflects the light on board depends on the creases’ angle. This is one of the resin that made before site visit.
G. Leaf
Collection of leaves included fallen leaves and living leaves. The reflection shows the shape of the leaves without details. This is also respond to the season in site and it was made befroe the site visit.
H. Soil The mud in the resin was digged from my garden in order to test how mud absorts and reflects light. Surpriseingly the mud has reflects some of the lighting on board.
