Volume IV / 2013

Uniting the World As the final days of 2013 draw near, we continue to expand our footprint to new and exciting locations around the world. While a full year-end review will be forthcoming in the next issue of Collections, I am proud to report that as of the end of November, we have already welcomed new firms from many places outside the United States including the Dominican Republic; Malta; the Philippines; Melbourne and the Gold Coast of Australia; Lugano, Switzerland; Dubai; Saudi Arabia; and Panama.

As we continue to grow, we must also continue to learn about and embrace diverse cultures. One way we are doing that is through our relationship with the Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA). I am honored to serve the organization as co-chair of their upcoming Global and Luxury Summit in New York City at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel April 12 to 15, 2014. To register or learn more, please go to the official event website by clicking here.

Achieving quality international growth was one of our top priorities for this year, and I am proud to say we made excellent progress in that area. And we look forward to reaching even greater heights next year.

Finally, I am very proud of the valuable media exposure we are receiving this month in New York City’s Times Square! Click here to see the video, and turn to page 13 for more information.

Thanks to the efforts of our entire network, 2013 was a terrific year for our brand. In addition to the many fine companies we welcomed, we made significant strides on the marketing front with the launch of our Anthology app and new specialty markets websites. We also had an unforgettable Global Networking Event and added terrific personnel to our international servicing hubs. Look to our first Collections of the new year for a complete 2013 recap.

With best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season,

Philip White

D

Portugal Sotheby's International Realty | Oeiras, Paço Arcos, Portugal | 2.850.000 € | Property ID: 4000016731

emand for luxury properties has been growing in Portugal thanks to the unique Portuguese combination of moderate southern Europe climate, tax advantages and a new residence permits policy for non-European real estate investors called “Golden Visa.” According to Gustavo Soares, chief operating officer of Portugal Sotheby's International Realty, this new residence permit enables its holders (and in some cases relatives) to have a residence in Portugal and to freely circulate in the Schengen area that includes most European Union countries. Real estate investors that own more than 500.000 EUR in Portuguese properties are eligible to apply for the "Golden Visa" residence permit. Portugal joined the European Union in 1986 and is one the founding members of the Euro currency with a population of 10 million. Portugal has a reputation for tranquility and a Mediterranean climate. The Algarve region in the south of Portugal has some of the best beaches in Europe and the country is known for its excellent food and wine. "Portugal has become the new hot spot for luxury houses in Europe, enabling global investors to find unique properties that fit their lifestyle while our established team makes all the necessary arrangements for getting the Golden Visa residence permit to facilitate their purchase," explained Gustavo.

Portugal Sotheby’s International Realty opened its first office in 1997, and today operates four offices around the country, with more than 80 top real estate professionals fluent in several languages and coming from different areas of academic training and professional experience. "The brand provides our clients with confidence in their investments and our ability to work in the luxury real estate market ensures we can guarantee unique positive experiences for all of our customers," said Gustavo. The newest office is located in Fontes Pereira de Melo Avenue, one of the most distinguished avenues in Lisbon. This unique 300 square meters store was designed to combine the high standards of the brand with a modern work place. For the next three years, Portugal Sotheby's International Realty plans to invest in three new offices around Portugal to ensure dominant coverage in this territory. Portugal Sotheby's International Realty currently represents nearly 3,000 luxury properties. A great example of the country’s real estate is a contemporary villa located in an exclusive luxury condominium in Lisbon (Oeiras). With fantastic sea views, this villa has four suites, living room design with space for three separate areas with double sided fireplace, private pool with heated seawater and terraces. The home offers exclusivity in a quiet area with excellent access to the capital center and to the beaches of the Costa do Sol. 2

The Wedding Cake House | carefree, arizona

Catherine Donaldson of Celia Dunn Sotheby's International Realty in Bluffton, S.C., has listed Tidalholm, the backdrop for the Hollywood films “The Big Chill" and "The Great Santini," for $3.5 million. Edgar Fripp reportedly built the Italianate style home to escape the summer heat of his sea island cotton plantation. This extraordinary property is considered one of the finest historic estates in the south. The estate served as a famous guest house from the 1930's to the 1970's and entertained many artists, authors and statesmen. The house was converted back to private use in 1974, and is located in the heart of Beaufort's National Historic Landmark District. Click here for more information. The home also was recently featured as “House of the Day” in The Wall Street Journal.

Preston and Nancy Westmoreland of Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty in Arizona have listed the Wedding Cake House for $4.29 million. Elements of the landmark home, located on a spectacular rocky site on Black Mountain, were taken from the legendary 15th century Italian architect Andrea Palladio. Former US President Thomas Jefferson also borrowed from Palladio's ideas and famous rotundas for his home at Monticello. The home is called the Wedding Cake House because the layered arched porticos on three different levels resemble to many the icing layers on a wedding cake. There also is a rock above it that is called the Bride and Groom rock because it resembles a couple kissing. Click here for more information.
