Studio Work – Form & Space Exploration

Exploration with the spatial relationship of Freeflow led to an organic form and flow. Working with a single piece of a3 paper was fun yet challenging. Model making was a new experience for me and gave me an outlet to experiment, freely explore how paper can be manipulated. Freeflow helped me to grasp a better understanding of approaches, spaces as well as design principles.

05

Starting out as two simple cubes, interlock evolved into a unique form. The exercise developed a strong understanding of aspects in design within me. it was an eye opening experience where I could appreciate the various unique models made by peers too.

Form & space exploration was a year one module under my diploma study. I started to establish an understanding of the fundamental principles in design through play, exploration and experimentation. Hands-on exercises gave me an outlet to discover how design can be approached in many ways.

Studio Work – Picturesque

Group analysis of Pulau Ubin provided a great challenge in terms of workload, communication and management. It granted us exposure with a macro scale as we gathered data, presented our findings and drew conclusions. Dissecting Ubin through the layers we did provided a thorough understanding of the site and its context.

The project site is at four ponds, which is found beside the start of sensory trail. With attractive views and natural shade within the area, it has potential to transform into a unique space for all visitors.

Four ponds is an area in Pulau Ubin that is often neglected by visitors. Implementing a design that can cater to visitors ranging from students to tourists, the site will be a good opportunity to showcase Ubin’s native plants and history.

Studio Work – Picturesque

Bring life and purpose to Four Ponds. Provide a rest stop for pedestrians and cyclists which encourages them to explore. Attract more visitors in Pulau Ubin and educate them about the local flora and fauna. Integrate design to its surroundings.

Acting as a scenic rest stop for pedestrians and cyclists, there are many natural shaded areas for lounging which invite visitors to interact with one another. Picturesque will stimulate the five senses, immersing visitors through a sense of discovery and exploration. Borderless design leads an educational opportunity with the open environment. Visitors will be able to learn more about the native ecosystem and local history.

09

Along the main deck of the design is a feature shelter. The open shelter provides an area for users to lounge at while providing some natural sunlight and wind to pass through. It is constructed with the same timber as the decking, creating a seamless design and forming a visual link between the shelter, the deck and the water body of Four Ponds.

Studio Work – Flux

The masterplan addresses issues in Tiong Bahru supported by site analysis. Improved connectivity in Bukit Merah for cyclists extending to landmarks and districts is proposed. This will encourage users to explore areas of the local history and culture as well as cyclability.

There are many neglected alleys in Tiong Bahru, such as one found between Tiong Bahru community centre and residential housing. The alley is surrounded by landmarks, which makes it an accessible area. It can transform into a space that strengthens the community’s bond as well as to educate visitors about the local arts scene.

11

Flux will be an adaptable design intervention that can cater to the needs of the community and visitors. It will transform the alley into a series of flexible spaces, providing a designated area for the local arts scene to develop and mingle.

Improve site accessibility to attract visitors. Introduce cyclability as an alternative mode of transport. Bring life to alleys through a community-inclusive design. Integrate design to its surroundings.

12

Studio Work – Flux

Movable walls were the main concept of Flux. Playing around with proportions and shifting elements branched development towards a design of flexible and adaptable spaces for different user needs. The alley aims to provide a network of spaces where programs organised by Tiong Bahru community centre can coexist while members of the community use it freely.

13

In an effort to promote the local culture and arts, the design will art, music and exhibition spaces. The design introduced to the alley will provide the community and visitors a place to interact with one another. At night, the alley will transform into an art market with flexible movie spaces for public viewing.

14

Studio Work – Flux

15

Flux aims to be a community-driven and inclusive design, where interaction is heavily encouraged between people and environment. The proposed intervention will liven up the existing neglected unused alley, providing day and night activities unique to this design and area. Not only will Flux be an opportunity for communal bonding, it will transform into an outlet for the local arts scene through its art market, flexible class spaces and movie spaces.

Studio Work – /sɪŋk/

Tanjong Pagar has many underutilised areas and congested traffic. Improving site connectivity and public transport will ease traffic, while shifting towards walkability and cyclability will support a healthy active lifestyle and communal bonding.

Based on Singapura Futura 2065, the proposal has to tackle to futuristic issues and needs. The main focus of /sɪŋk/ is the widening intergenerational gap in the workforce and ever-evolving lifestyle.

The design form is inspired by the Voronoi Diagram. It was developed towards an organic form with all-rounded flow. With smooth connections and expandable spaces, flexibility for adaptable programming was focused on.

17

Bridging the intergenerational gap in Singapore’s workforce in 2065, /sɪŋk/ is a network of adaptable leisure-work environments that encourages social interaction and recreation. The immersive design aims to engage users through a mixture of visuals, sound and texture. This includes an interactive water feature which connects to the roof’s water catchment. The sound of water helps to drown the noise from the bus terminal below.

Well connected and accessibility for all visitors and users. Support a balanced work-live-play lifestyle with a network of adaptable spaces and programs. Encourage social interaction between users, especially across generations.

18

19

Spaces for leisure include an urban farm, performance plaza and two gyms. Flexible work environments such as exhibition spaces and a futuristic interpretation of a library.

Flexible and porous spaces throughout the design will improve user experiences by providing semi-shaded open environments. Metal grating are used to provide partial shade while keeping Sync porous across floors. Green roofs and solar panels are installed around the building as well.

Involvement - Competitions

With educational and waste management issues in Phnom Penh in mind, my peers and I proposed a masterplan which was supported by our designs. We proposed reusing plastic bottles innovatively to spread awareness on recycling and caring for the environment. Supported by research and our knowledge on space making, we connected hubs with accessible education to act as a platform for the community. Participating in Young Mayor with other institutions was an eye-opening experience, I admired how they tackled obstacles despite their lack of knowledge in this industry.

Participating in Greenthumbs’ individual landscape sketching category, most of my time was spent amongst students of other institutions. Watching their interpretations of the landscape come to life as well as my peers cheering for each other was a refreshing experience.

23

Under SILA’s Student Design Awards 2016, I submitted my second year Pulau Ubin project, Picturesque, as an entry.

24

Involvement - Competitions

CUBE was a short but enriching week-long journey. The time limit and fast-paced atmosphere made it stressful and pressuring, but it brought the best out of the team and we managed to pull through together. I learnt a lot from my peers, juniors and facilitators who helped us in our journey when we needed guidance. The site was in Buona Vista, sandwiched between the biopolis and residential housing. Colovista was our proposal, a node which would bring together the diversity of communities nearby. The design could cater to user needs and reinforce the connection of the railway corridor.

25

Under SILA’s Student Design Awards 2017, I submitted Stretch as an entry. Under a school project design brief, Stretch is a borderless design about the arts. The design intervention is proposed in Temasek Polytechnic’s Glocal Connect Village. Improving accessibility shaped spaces used by students, passer-bys and visitors.

26

Involvement – Experiences & Events

Working with members of SILA’s LA Future, a landscape architecture networking event was organised. Planning and socialising allowed me to meet like-minded professionals and students.

Helping out with an installation was a handson exposure I loved. Watching members of the public interact with it afterwards was a rewarding experience.

27

At several local design landmarks, I helped usher people and crowd control. I learnt more than expected from the locations I stationed at. Working with like-minded others and adapting to the event’s fast pace was valuable exposure to me.

Joining this volunteer opportunity, I grouped up with people of various ages and professions to weed Ketam Quarry. Though physically demanding, it was pleasant to bond with and work alongside with them.
