Celebrating 10 years of the iKBBI

Welcome

10 years and counting ... Ten years ago to the day, three blokes decided it would be a great idea to launch a non-profit-making organisation with a view to positively change the KBB installation industry. As we celebrate our ten year anniversary today, this special edition of The IKBBI Installer Magazine looks back at a decade of change for the industry and the journey The Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installers has taken over the last 3,650 days. It's not been an easy journey, but pleasingly, the organisation has matured into something that offers benefit to thousands of installers across the UK. We also explore our three core pillars which will propel the organisation into the next decade and introduce some new faces that will no doubt play a pivotal role in its future success. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who have played a significant role in our success so far - to include, first and foremost, our incredibly important members. Those businesses who represent the organisation and indeed the industry on the front line.

I'd also like to thank our sponsors. Without their financial (and moral) support, we would almost definitely not be in the great shape we are today. We must also not forget our Retail Installation Standards Partners for putting their faith in me, the organisation, its values and our collective vision. Finally, I'd like to once again thank two others. Two people who believed in the concept when others believed it would be impossible. Two people that invested their time, expertise and money into me personally. Whilst no longer with the iKBBI, Drew Carter and Gordon Smith gave so much to me and the organisation in the beginning. Their expertise is now woven into the DNA of the organisation, which I hope they are incredibly proud of. Okay, that’s enough of the sentimental stuff! Enjoy this issue of the magazine and as ever, please feel free to feedback on this edition and contribute to future ones!

CALLING ALL GOLFERS…

SUPPORT TO TRADING STANDARDS In addition to providing support to The Furniture Ombudsman and their vital work with Alternative Dispute Resolution, iKBBI Chief Inspector Geoff Jackson confirmed that the iKBBI will be present at this years CTSI conference in Telford.

Supporting their official charitable partner, The Furniture Makers Company, the iKBBI is assembling a cracking team of keen golfers to represent the organisation at the iconic Belfry on the 3rd October. Full details to follow, but members are invited to contact Denise Mayell (denise. mayell@ikbbi.org.uk) if they’re interested in finding out more about the event. Team space is limited, so if you are interested, get in touch!

The conference attracts Trading Standards officers from across the country and the institute will be discussing ways it can support them in their tireless work protecting and representing consumers from rogue elements of our industry. Chief Inspector Geoff Jackson said: “We have seen a positive demand for our inspection services in recent months from our members and other parties who have expressed an interest in the benefits that independent expertise can bring.” Geoff went onto say: “We currently have 32 inspectors providing a national inspection service. Our field team carries out audits on prospective members, independent expert witness services for The Furniture Ombudsman and gives support to consumers who have installation issues and contact us directly. The service, like the institute itself, runs on a not-for-profit basis, meaning we can deliver expert inspection at cost-effective rates.” The iKBBI will be expanding the service later this year, providing its Installation Standards Partners with a pay-as-you-go service to support their respective field management teams. Geoff said: “This additional service will assist our retail partners in a number of ways, to include holiday cover, support with priorities – including installer recruitment – as well as risk management and independent auditing.”

THE iKBBI COMMITS TO THE FURNITURE MAKERS COMPANY, THE FURNISHING INDUSTRY’S CHARITY The iKBBI has announced that it is supporting The Furniture Makers Company as a Corporate Member, joining brands including iKBBI Installation Partners B&Q and John Lewis, as well as sponsors Blum. Formed as a guild in 1952, established as a livery company of the City of London in 1963, and granted a Royal Charter in 2013, the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers strategically supports three key areas within the furniture industry namely; Education, Excellence and Assistance. The Company is also proud to support our armed forces by being affiliated with 2nd Battalion, The Rifles. Their historical ties with the forces date back to 1989 when the Bond of Association was made between the Company and The Royal Green Jackets, who in 2007 became a part of the new regiment – The Rifles. iKBBI CEO Damian Walters, who attended the admissions ceremony in central London earlier this month on behalf of the organisation, said: “We have already been supporting the charity with several initiatives and so we are pleased to make the Company our official charity moving forward."

6

www.ikbbi.org.uk

The Furniture Makers Company’s core pillars are not too dissimilar to those of the Institute. Its commitments to education, especially with their tireless efforts working on educational programmes for schoolchildren and students, as well as their sterling work on recognising quality standards complement those of the iKBBI. The iKBBI and The Furniture Makers Company will work together, along with other key parties, to develop a nationally available apprenticeship for kitchen, bedroom and bathroom installation and Continued Personal Development opportunities for time-served installers.

CHANCELLOR SLASHES BUSINESS RATES FOR SMALL BUSINESSES Around 600,000 small businesses will pay no business rates at all from April next year and another 250,000 will have their bills reduced after Chancellor George Osborne extended rate relief in his eighth budget. In a budget welcomed by business organisations, Osborne said that by raising the threshold at which rates cut in from £6,000 to £15,000, many small firms will save £6,000 a year. Other small business-friendly measures included reducing the headline rate of corporation tax from 20% to 17% by 2020 and taking steps to make internet traders based overseas pay VAT. “The Chancellor has listened to our calls for the tax system to be made simpler for small businesses and the self-employed and taken important action on business rates,” said Mike Cherry, the Policy Director at the Federation of Small Businesses. He added: “The combined measures announced on business rates – the single biggest tax cut in today's budget – will be viewed by our members as a welcome and important step on the road to fundamental reform.” Dr Adam Marshall, the acting Director General at the British Chambers of Commerce, said the Chancellor “has finally taken real action to lessen the crushing burden of business rates and sharpened incentives for entrepreneurship and investment.”

Following recent controversies about international businesses paying little or no tax on money raised in the UK, the Chancellor pledged to raise £9bn by tightening tax rules and preventing companies shifting profits to tax havens. The tax-free personal allowance is increased to £11,500 from April next year, with the 40% income tax threshold rising to £45,000, taking 500,000 people out of paying higher rate tax. Class 2 National Insurance for the self employed will be abolished from 2018. Motorist-friendly measures included freezing fuel duty for the sixth year in a row – saving £275 a year for a small business with a van – widening the M62 and upgrading the A66 and A69, and halving tolls on the Severn crossings from 2018.

GROHE UPDATES SMART REWARD SCHEME Grohe has updated its Smart reward scheme, which offers installers the chance to receive points on products, to provide members with a wider range of products to exchange their points for, including Molton Brown gift sets and Apple products. Installers can exchange their Smart points for products within the work & tools, multimedia, kitchen & living, barbecuing & gardening and leisure & wellness categories. Around 1,700 Grohe products are included in the scheme, allowing members to accumulate points from purchasing the products to exchange for rewards.

MIELE, SAMSUNG, AO.COM SHORTLISTED IN WHICH? AWARDS

PIPES & FITTINGS MARKET TO SEE 5% GROWTH IN 2015 The UK pipes and fittings market is expected to report a 5% growth rate in 2015, according to a new report by AMA Research, due in part to improving levels of construction in the commercial and housing sectors, as well as falling raw material prices. The market has grown by around 15% since 2012, AMA said. The plumbing pipe systems sector comprises around 60% of the market, according to the research firm. Builders' merchants are the main channel of distribution for the market, accounting for around 50% of distribution, followed by specialist distributors and DIY stores. “The outlook for the UK pipes and fittings market in 2016 is positive, supported by the growth of new construction levels and RMI expenditure,” said AMA Research director Keith Taylor. “Private housing completions are forecast to experience steady growth in the medium to longer term, while the private commercial sector is likely to drive new-build demand in the non-domestic market. “Growth sectors should include budget and luxury hotels, care homes and student accommodation, and there may also be opportunities in the education sector, where around 70% of washroom installations are over 20 years old and many heating systems are aged,” he added.

Miele, Samsung, John Lewis, New World and Sebo have been shortlisted for the Home Appliance Brand of the Year category in the 2016 Which? Awards, while AO.com, John Lewis and Toolstation have been shortlisted for the Retailer of the Year category. The winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony on 25th May, with this year's event marking the consumer

watchdog's 10th annual awards ceremony. “The Which? Awards celebrate brands that succeed because they put consumers at the heart of their business,” said Which? Group CEO Peter Vicary-Smith. “For our 10th Which? Awards, we are looking to reward businesses that deliver excellent products and services, and those that seek to change things and innovate to consistently deliver more for their customers.”

iKBBI Celebrating 10 years

2016 is a landmark year for the iKBBI as the organisation celebrates its tenth birthday. From modest ideological roots, the institute has grown into a successful, meaningful and most importantly, highly respected player in the KBB industry. The Installer magazine, with the iKBBI CEO Damian Walters, takes a look at some of the institutes key moments with an historical timeline: 2006 Founded by three industry experts, Damian Walters (DW), Andrew Carter and Gordon Smith, the iKBBI was soft launched in 2006 with an objective to support installation businesses with their commercial aspirations, whilst defining installation standards and providing UK consumers with an improved and informed choice.

DW: “The initial plan was to work exclusively with installers, although over time it became apparent that an institute should have greater influence over a much wider cross section of the industry.”

In the news 2006 • Twitter is launched by Jack Dorsey • "To google" (verb) enters the Oxford English Dictionary

Initially viewed with scepticism by some and branded "another meaningless badge" by a few, the strategic view was that in order to have a meaningful impact on the industry, the organisation had to be different to anything that had ever existed

before. An institute, with a very strong legal definition, had not been in existence before and therefore it was felt that it could have a very specific role to play within the industry it represents. Whilst they chose a tough and arduous process to bring to market, the three founders decided nevertheless to apply for institute status - and there the journey officially begun! 2007 Following an application to government in April 2007, the iKBBI was granted official institute status from The Secretary of State (Sir John Hutton), with support from industry organisations including The National Training Group (NTG), Construction Skills, CITB and ProSkills. The process to become an institute was via a six-month-long period of due diligence by the government due to the fact that institute status is only granted to those organisations of the highest standing. Failure to seek approval from the Secretary of State for use of the word 'institute' is actually a criminal offence, this demonstrates the significant nature and legal standing an institute is responsible for.

months and years being the most exciting, they are equally the most demanding and stressful. 2008 Founding sponsors that committed financially to the initiative included the ’blue-chip’ international brands Blum and Franke, together with BUPA, RAC and Classic Marble. DW: “The first wave of sponsors played an incredibly important part in helping establish the organisation as they immediately added kudos and gravitas and without their early and pioneering commitment we would have never begun the journey so my gratitude to them all is enormous. Blum, Classic Marble and Franke remain sponsors, this is something that I'm incredibly proud of. 2009 Our find-a-member website, www.professionalfitters. org, was launched in a bid to help members connect with consumers. For the first time in UK history, consumers could find trusted local installers who specialised in KBB installations; this was a real milestone for the iKBBI. As a direct result of MFI’s collapse in 2008, the iKBBI started working with retailers to help members find new work streams. The Big Bathroom Shop and Tesco were the first to support our initiative and we were proud to have helped hundreds of members with new and exciting opportunities. In 2009 the iKBBI launched marketing material for members to help them connect with new customers. The “Why Choose a Member” leaflet was born and marketing support for members began and started paying dividend for those installers who used them. The institute also welcomed its 500th member as real time national coverage was generated for the first time. We had installers registered from as far north as Aberdeen and as far south as Plymouth!

The iKBBI also became sponsors of the inaugural Scottish Home Improvement Awards, reaching out to businesses and consumers north of the boarder. Commitment was also made to support KBB Birmingham 2016, as well as Installer Live and UK Construction Week 2016. issue 1 - spring 2015

The iKBBI Installer Magazine was relaunched in the spring of 2015, with a circulation to the KBB industry of circa 10,000+. The magazine forms part of

a wider communication strategy, which included the appointment of a new head office Communications Manager role. The iKBBI Inspection Network launched in November and will play an important role supporting The Furniture Ombudsman and the newly launched Consumer Rights Act (2015) and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Inspection will also play a huge role in the iKBBI offering moving forward.

for the vote to leave was motivated by immigration and the implications migration from Europe (& beyond) has on the UK. Other motives included the belief that the UK would be economically stronger operating alone and that European legislative dictation was holding the country back. In June, the British public will take to the polls to vote on the United Kingdom’s membership to the European Union and essentially whether we should stay in, or exit. Politicians from all parties have been canvassing their opinion over the last few months, but with all the noise, the iKBBI asked whether the KBB industry really understood the choice and which way their vote would go if they entered the polls today. 4,203 participated in the poll, 82% of which were installers / installation businesses, 15% were retailers / designers and 3% were manufacturer / distributors. 65% would vote to leave the EU. 25% would vote to remain in the EU. 10% said they were undecided. Of the 65% who said they would vote to exit, over half stated the reason 22

www.ikbbi.org.uk

One of those anonymously surveyed stated: “I’m fed up with our continuous bailing out of other failing EU countries” and continued “The UK has a severe immigration issue, not being helped by the Europeans who allow free transit through their countries, on route to ours”. 93% of those canvassed said they would be voting in June, 2% said they wouldn’t be and 5% said they were undecided. Interestingly, 87% said they were not in a position to make an informed choice, stating that they didn’t feel as if they had the full facts. Clearly the politicians have more to do! The government, led by PM David Cameron, is heading the campaign for the UK to stay in the European Union, having agreed a package of changes to the UK's membership of the EU after two days of intensive talks with other member states' leaders in Brussels in February.

Brexit Member Survey “I am not surprised the poll shows that most iKBBI members want out of the EU and that they would feel confident in the event of a 'Brexit' vote. It is important that we listen to their views when we all make our decision on 23 June. I believe that although there might be some shortterm economic risks if we leave the EU, there could be long-term benefits for businesses like those represented by the iKBBI. It is also important that businesses can access more information about the EU referendum. 87% of those polled by the iKKBI said they were not in a position to make an informed choice and I hope that the right facts become available in the weeks leading up to the final vote. Stephen Metcalfe, Member of Parliament for South Basildon & East Thurrock

Legal Advice

ARE YOU CONSUMER RIGHTS COMPLIANT? The iKBBI undertook a flash survey recently on the subject of the newly introduced Consumer Rights Act (2015), which became law in October 2015. In all, 100 consumers and 100 installers were surveyed, with some rather surprising results. When asked whether they were aware that a new law came into force last year, 29% of installers said they were aware, whilst just 8% of consumers knew that a new law had been introduced. Of the 29 installers who knew, less than 10% ( just 2) said they understood the implications that the changes would make to their business, whilst NONE of the consumers knew any detail whatsoever. The Consumer Rights Act (2015) affects everyone involved in the sale or purchasing of goods and/or services in the United Kingdom. Not knowing, or fully understanding the rights of the consumer could be potentially devastating for those businesses engaging consumers. The iKBBI is planning a series of initiatives to support its members with a better understanding of the new legislation, to include the provision of a terms and conditions template, as well as a mobile phone app to help professional installers provide legally approved contracts with their clients.

Installer Profile, Gareth Williams

GOOD TO BE BACK! The Installer magazine talks to Gareth Williams and discovers how he and his family have bounced back from adversity when they returned from starting a new life abroad, and how the experience empowered him to build a successful kbb installation business. “I’ve been installing kitchens for 15 years now beginning in 2001 after taking a voluntary redundancy package from NTL (now Virgin Media) as a Plant Protection Officer. I had a varied background before that working as a dental surgery designer, a kitchen designer at B&Q, a disabled adaptations surveyor, and a handyman to name but a few.” You say that you fit kitchens why not bedrooms and bathrooms? “I do now, this was probably a slip of the tongue due to the fact that we only began fitting bedrooms and bathrooms more recently.” Why the change of heart? “In truth, I’ve started doing bathrooms again after shunning many offers to install them by various showrooms. I’m sure I’ve lost loads of kitchens fits off the back of not doing bathrooms over the years so I’ve realised that bathrooms are equally important and I actually enjoy it. Bathrooms really are a vital part of the industry and I now embrace the fact.” How do you think bathrooms have changed since you first came into the industry? “The bathroom is no longer just a sanitaryware suite replacement. It’s fast

Installer Profile, Gareth Williams

becoming the room where people want luxury and they want it designed to fit their lives. Lots of customers say they want it to look like a luxury hotel or a spa so that’s what we give them, we realise their dream.” What area do you cover? “The area I work within (South Wales) is quite a big geographical area and I tend to stop heading east at the seven bridge and my furthest in a westerly direction is Swansea with my main target area being the capital Cardiff.” What do you think your main USP’s (ultimate selling points) are? “Apart from the installation side of the job, my passion and speciality is design and I’m proud to say my designs win lots of projects for me purely because I spend a long time making sure the room works perfectly for each individual client. Many companies won’t come to the house and rely on the customers measurements to make a drawing. Others send out salesmen with no flair for design (it’s all about the commission). In contrast, I offer a relaxed process of survey and design before I even take them to a showroom so they know it’s more about them than the profit margin.”

But you’re a business and it is about making profits, yes? “Of course profit margin is important but quality of service is right up there as well.” Tell us about your early years in the industry? “In the early days I cut my teeth in the industry with the likes of MFI, which provided a good grounding to my career and it was a big eye opener for me. I’d never really fitted a kitchen before so when I jumped into the industry feet first I had to learn really quickly and luckily it paid off. However, I soon realised that working for the big sheds was not for me and moved on to working with local privately owned showrooms, and places like Sigma3.” So how do you generate business? “Over the years I’ve worked for lots of showrooms and was actually contracted to one for many years but in the last year I’ve become completely self-sufficient.” How does this work? “I do a lot of advertising locally using magazines and social media groups for lead generation and of course recommendation from satisfied customers; I also do a little bit for another

local showroom and I’ve been working consistently.” So you would say that you’re selfmotivated? “Yes of course, it’s easy to become lazy in this industry by only doing what you enjoy but to stay afloat you have to have a ‘can-do’ attitude. For example, I offer a floor and wall tiling service, door hanging, skirting and even on the odd occasion I’ll decorate the room as well just because the competition out there is so strong.” Ever had any mishaps? “It can happen! We do have some good fun on the jobs and one story always springs to mind. We were working in a new house many years ago and my labourer drilled all the holes across a stud wall ready for the wall unit hanging plates to go up with cavity fixings. He turned to me after drilling about 18 holes and says “I don’t know but this wall just doesn’t feel right when I drill it” on closer inspection we discovered the wall was actually a honeycomb plasterboard wall and we could see the back of the customers head while he watched TV! Luckily the customer saw the funny side and after a bit of filler and paint the wall on the lounge side was as good as new.” What do you think you would be if not a KBB installer? “I think I’d be a designer or an installation manager. I can’t imagine not being part of the KBB industry now. It’s in my blood.” What’s been your biggest business challenge? “I think the biggest challenge I’ve faced as a business is keeping a consistency of work while sticking to my self-imposed rule of not working for the big sheds. It works well for some people but out of principle I won’t put myself in a situation

28

www.ikbbi.org.uk

where the delivery and quality of the goods is totally beyond my control.” And your biggest personal challenge? I’d say the biggest challenge I’ve had was moving abroad just before the recession and losing everything. My wife, 2 little boys and I went to live in Cyprus for a better life 2008. Unfortunately we didn’t like it quite as much as we thought. I lost my job as a kitchen fitter after about a year when the economic downturn started to bite, then when the Euro came in it added 20k to my mortgage while the property prices plummeted. The long and short is we came home and after 4 years we managed to sell the house we owned at a loss and basically had to start again with nothing. But If you let these things consume you you’re finished, so we just picked ourselves up and marched on.

Installer Profile, Gareth Williams

they undercut the real fitters because they don’t pay tax, run a van, hold insurance etc. Until the right balance is found I think fitters will continue to leave the industry.” So what does the future hold for you? “I have decided that in the next few years I want to open a small showroom and come away from installations with a view to building up over the next 5 to 10 years towards retirement.”

Do you have any concerns for the industry? “I think my biggest concern is the fact that profit of the big DIY shops could overrule the need for quality furniture, and installation. With their massive buying power they sell cheap furniture and then offer a fitting service which is more expensive than the furniture. I can understand customers wanting to buy things cheaply but then they expect it to be installed perfectly for peanuts. If you’re a proper installer with the right van, right tools, right insurance, and right knowledge you expect to be paid relative to your skill-set. The big shops are not only cheapening a highly skilled profession but are driving down prices making it difficult for seasoned installers to make a decent living. This situation is also inviting unskilled workers into the industry where

So why did you join the iKBBI? “Joining the IKBBI was I decision I made to add a bit more credibility to the business. It’s hard enough to win work with all the competition but the iKBBI accreditation demonstrates that you have a commitment to what you do which hopefully gives me the edge when trying to win customers. I’ve only recently joined the IKBBI in January 2016 and use the logo on my paperwork, uniform, website, and lead generators so I’m hoping the word is slowly getting out there. I would love to see a day when the IKBBI was as popular as GASSAFE, or NICEIC so the cowboys can be eradicated and only accredited installers can legally be used legally.” Finally, how do you relax? “I don’t get a lot of free time as if I’m not working I’m out measuring or on the computer designing. My two boys Josh 13 and Dan 12 go to karate 3 times a week and then there are the competitions we attend to support them. However, on the rare occasion that I don’t work a Saturday I sit at the bar I built in the house and have a few well deserved beers with some friends. My better half Liz also works some crazy hours as well as keeping us cleaned and fed so she deserves a mention as without her support I think I might have left the industry at some point!”

HAND CUTTING MADE CLEAN AND SIMPLE Festool's diamond cutting system

Cutting wall and floor tiles with a handheld machine to produce a clean faultfree edge can be a challenge. Factors that need to be considered are correct dust extraction, diamond disc choice, cutting a perfectly straight line and of course it has to be user-friendly by being simple to use. Festool manufacturers this type of system with two machines, the D.S.C. A.G.125, and the guide rail version, D.S.C. A.G.125 FS PLUS to ensure maximum cleanliness and efficiency in operation Festool also supplies the CTM 36 E AC HD extractor.

Tools, Power Tools & Equipment Advice

Both machines use Festool diamond cutting discs and the discs are capable of cutting into concrete, mortar raking and there is a specific tile cutting version that leaves a fantastic edge. A big advantage of using these Festool machines is that they enable installers to work without the use of a wet saw system and to be able to work in a contained area with perfect extraction, this can create big cost savings on both time and labour. The Festool D.S.C. A.G 125 FS PLUS utilises the Festool guide rail to produce perfectly straight cuts when working with tiles, for example. The machine can be set to the correct depth of cut to ensure that the disc is working efficiently and accurately. As the machine is guided by the rail, it cuts at precise angles thus saving on potential costly mistakes. Its variable speed can be used to ensure that the material being worked on is treated correctly to ensure that the highest possible quality finish is achieved both quickly and efficiently.

fine dust as possible. This results in the environment that you are working in is kept as clean as possible, which is vital if you are working in your customers home. The extractor also benefits from being a part of the Festool hub system, so connecting the machine to the extractor is just a simple case of just pushing the hose on to the extraction port. The extractor can of course be used with other machines from the Festool range. All machines from Festool come with a Service All-Inclusive warranty so long as the machine is registered correctly. www.festool.co.uk

The Festool D.S.C. A.G 125 F H is a freehand machine and so is perfect for removing small cut away sections like around the corner of a wall for instance and it can also be used to cut cement based materials. Due to the compact size of the machine, it is perfect for quick cuts over short distances in areas that need small amounts removed. Its dust extraction is excellent too. The Festool CTM 36 E AC HD extractor is M-class rated but has the additional benefit of working with an ‘Autoclean’ system so it is perfect for working with, and extracting very fine dust. ‘Autoclean’ allows the filter to be forcibly cleaned every 10 seconds thus ensuring that the extractor is working to clear as much

BMA Matters

THE EUROPEAN WATER LABEL, THE NEW TOOL TO WIN ORDERS Installers are no different from any other industry professional. They are always on the lookout for work and always trying to find ways to gain competitive advantage. Winning orders is key and any new sales tool is welcomed. A surprising newcomer to their toolbox is the European Water Label. Actually, it’s been around for a few years but it’s only relatively recently that industry professionals, including installers, designers, architects and retailers, have recognised how easy it is to use and that the Scheme gives them a mass of information which can, and does, win orders. Most professionals know that there has been an accelerating trend, in the bathroom sector, for products which are sustainable. The trend has been brought about both by legislation and by a change in attitudes. It actually makes sense to be more efficient, to save water and energy, and to save money. Professionals and consumers alike are asking about the credentials of bathroom products before the buy. The European Water Labelling Scheme was originally created by the Bathroom Manufacturers Association to answer that insatiable demand for information. The scheme has grown rapidly. It now stretches to 38 countries and quickly provides water and energy usage characteristics, in its online database, for

32

www.ikbbi.org.uk

over 11,000 products in 14 categories for 98 premium bathroom brands. It’s big and its real beauty lies in that it is entirely voluntary, is cost efficient, and maintains integrity through regular, random product testing to check that the information provided is up to date and accurate. Installers are finding that the European Water Label makes their business life so much easier and can be a real deal clincher. It can swing a potential customer away from a competitor. And that’s because those who regularly use the easyto-find information found in the database, can persuade the customer of the potential benefits of the products being quoted for. It enhances the knowledge base of the installer and enhances their customer’s perception of them. It’s a classic win-win situation. Yvonne Orgill, Managing Director of EWL, in her recently published Annual Review, indicated her delight with the progress of this voluntary and value-led scheme.

“2015 proved to be a turning point in the development of our product label. The scheme was presented with its 5th Award, this time from the Sustainable Water Industry Group. Simplicity is its key and it is proving to be a valuable tool in the pursuit of more efficient buildings. More and more installers are reaping its benefits, they love it and why wouldn’t they!”

About The European Water Label The European Water Label is the voluntary, not-for-profit, international industry labelling scheme for bathroom and kitchen products. The scheme provides easy access to a database of products which, when installed and used correctly, will use less water, save energy and save money. The scheme is administered by the Bathroom Manufacturers Association. Applications to join the scheme as registered companies or scheme partners are invited. www.europeanwaterlabel.eu

Q & A with Geoff Jackson

Q&A

with Geoff Jackson Geoff Jackson is the iKBBI’s Inspector Coordinator and is responsible for liaison between the institute's national network of field inspectorate and our clients. A former Metropolitan Police officer of 32 years, Geoff has a wealth of experience in the provision of professional witness statements and court preparation.

How long have you been working for the iKBBI? Though I have been employed by the iKBBI for only two years, I have been associated with the iKBBI for many years and have watched with great interest as what was basically a concept 10 years ago, has become the strong and respected organisation it is today. What were your first impressions? My first impressions of the iKBBI was one of getting a better understanding of how the institute was genuinely fulfilling several needs within the KBB industry, especially when it came to education and standards.

34

www.ikbbi.org.uk

What interests you most about your roll as an inspector? My role is particularly interesting and extremely important as it ensures that both consumer and installer’s rights are met. Its makes my role very varied as no two cases are the same, however, I’m proud to say that each situation is dealt with promptly, fairly and openly and transparently. You spent many years in the police service, does this help you in your role with the iKBBI in any way? I spent just over 33 years with the Metropolitan Police during which time I carried out a whole variety of duties and gained many useful skills that stand me in good stead as an iKBBI Inspector. For over 27 years I was a traffic officer as a motorcyclist and later a driver. I was also a

Vehicle Examiner and a Fatal Accident Examiner/ Investigator. My previous police service helps me greatly within my role with the iKBBI, especially when it comes to people skills, communications and investigation. My vast experience also means that I am able to share the skills I accumulated with the Met in report writing with other inspectors. On the lighter side, who makes you laugh? Many of our old comedians made me laugh and still do; one of my favourites was Norman Wisdom,

Q & A with Geoff Jackson

although Tommy Cooper always made me laugh without having to even say a word!

And cry? I have been known to get emotional and possibly the thing that affects me most is the annual Service of Remembrance that takes place at the Cenotaph.

Name 3 people you’d most like to share a few beers with? I would like to have the opportunity to have a couple of pints with my dad, who passed away when I wasn’t even on lemonade! Sadly, there are several other family members that I would also love to share a pint with but can’t for the same reason. For non-family, it would be Henry Cooper, our greatest ever boxer who, despite all of his fame, came over as a normal likeable man. I would also like to share some beers with Bradley Walsh. I’d like to find out if he is as really funny as he comes across on TV.

Book or Kindle? I’d definitely opt for a book. I’m currently reading ‘Inferno’ by Dan Brown.

Rachel Riley or Old Mother Riley? I can remember the Old Mother Riley character but I’ll go with Rachel Riley.

Posh & Becks or Nosh & Becks (beer)? Nosh & Becks! Becks if I’m not driving and Becks Blue if I am. A nice Steak ’N’ Kidney pie is always good, especially for cold nights. Name the 3 people you’d least like to share a beer with? I would least like to share a pint with Donald Trump, Ken Livingstone and Vladimir Putin!

Name one possession you could never do without? Like many people, I have a several objects that are ‘special’ to me, but there is no one thing that I could never do without.

KBB Exhibition Review

INCREASING BRAND AWARENESS AT KBB 2016 Once again the team at the iKBBI were pleased to support KBB2016 in Birmingham last month (March 2016) and were delighted with the positive response to the stand displays and the institute in general from visitors. It proved a useful tool for increasing awareness of the organisation and its initiatives. For the first time, two stands were dedicated to the iKBBI, with the second being home to this very magazine. In all, the institute had around thirty square metres of exhibition space. The main stand focused on the iKBBI and the release of its latest prospectus, including the launch of its ‘Core Pillars’, see: www.ikbbi.org.uk/images/iKBBI%20 Prospectus%2016-17.pdf. The second and slightly smaller stand, showcased the iKBBI’s member magazine, The Installer Magazine (us), inviting visitors to subscribe for free, see: www.ikbbi.org.uk/ index.php/news/installer-magazine The general consensus from the iKBBI team who attended the show was one of success with hundreds of visitors to the two stands over the four days. The team gathered some great contact information and is currently working its way through the details, identifying any opportunities. The vast majority of those who visited the stand are from the retail and manufacturing areas of the industry but

36

www.ikbbi.org.uk

they all showed great interest. There were fewer installers in attendance but those who did expressed that they found the visit worthwhile. Importantly, it gave the iKBBI team a rare opportunity to meet many members face-to-face from around the UK. Damian Walters, iKBBI CEO said “KBB Birmingham only takes place every two years but it’s the leading KBB show in the UK. As we are the industry's only institute dedicated to KBB installation, we simply have to be there to share our objectives with prospective members, partners and corporates, networking with industry media and meeting and connecting with existing members.”

TAX TIPS by Dean Flood The chancellor presented his Spring budget on the 16th March. Below are some aspects of that budget that may be relevant to reader’s businesses or personal tax circumstances. Tax on Dividends Further to previous announcements, the chancellor confirmed the already well advertised changes to the tax system in relation to dividends. The current system of applying a notional tax credit to dividends received and the effective non taxation of dividends received by basic rate tax payers has been significantly altered. From the 6th April 2016, the concept of the notional tax credit will disappear and will be replaced by a charge of 0% for dividends received up to £5,000 in total. Dividends in excess of this amount will be taxed at 7.5% for basic rate tax payers, 32.5% for higher rate taxpayers and 38.1% for those at the additional rate. These changes will have a direct impact on the tax paid by business owners who receive most of their income by dividends through their own Limited companies. Should forecasts of personal income be available to business owners, it is recommended to obtain early tax calculations from their accountants to avoid nasty tax liability surprises in subsequent years. Loans to Participators Some company directors receive loans from their companies which assuming certain conditions, are subject to on account corporation tax charges of 25%. From 6th April 2016, new loans will be subject to a new rate of 32.5%. 38

www.ikbbi.org.uk

Dean Flood Chartered Certified Accountant and Partner at Rowland Hall

Capital Distributions on Wind Up In some scenarios, it is possible to make distributions to shareholders following the formal wind up of a Limited Company, and in such cases the distributions are treated as capital for tax purposes and assuming Entrepreneur’s relief is applied, the receipt is subject to CGT at 10%. HMR&C are now going to apply anti-avoidance legislation to all such distributions after 5th April 2016, so that any that do not meet certain criteria, will be taxed as dividend income as opposed to capital gains. Capital Gains Tax Rates The chancellor has announced a marked reduction in CGT rates with the basic rate reducing from 18% to 10% and the rate for higher rate taxpayers falling to 20% (previously 28%). The 10% rate will still apply for entrepreneur’s relief related transactions and the old rates will still apply to residential property disposals not covered by private residence relief. The above is only a small extract of relevant legislation that will follow the budget announcement so please speak to your advisors to ascertain a full understanding of what may be relevant to you or your business. www.rowlandhall.co.uk Tel: 01375 373 828 / 01268 696 878

RECOGNISING THE IMPORTANCE OF KITCHEN INSTALLERS The Installer magazine talks to Steve Rutter, Marketing Operations Manager, Franke UK, about the company's recently re-launched 'Fit Franke First' initiative. What is Fit Franke First and why was it launched? Fit Franke First is an initiative that provides easy-to-access online resources to help enhance an installer’s skills and knowledge, while aiming to save them time and money. We launched it because we know installers play a key role in delivering professionalism across the kitchen industry. We also recognise the importance of their custom, so we want to give as much support as we can. Offering resources through a website means they’re available 24/7. What makes it relevant for installers? Installers want a hassle-free installation, done right first time and every time. We first launched Fit Franke First in 2014, to provide a series of short training and information videos covering popular topics on installing sinks and taps. Through Fit Franke First, the videos were easy for installers to find and to access, because they were all in one place. A range of techniques were covered, starting with the basics and building up to more specific and complex subject matters. We’ve taken the level of information a step further now and extended the website so

40

that installers benefit from rewards and exclusive offers, brochures, installation guides, templates, technical support, spares and business advice articles. We are continually monitoring the site and refreshing the content, so there will be something new with each visit. What benefits do installers get from the scheme? Registration for Fit Franke First is free and we have streamlined the process so that it’s also quick and easy. As an extra incentive to sign up, we have prizes up for grabs throughout the year ranging from power tools and fuel cards to a luxury holiday. Every installer has the chance to win a prize when sending the details of their Franke product purchases. All they have to do is visit the website www. fitfrankefirst.co.uk with the details of

their purchase and they will be instantly entered into a prize draw. It’s an added bonus really, as the main benefits of the scheme are those areas that help installers with their business day-to-day. What sort of response have you had? The response so far has been very positive. The most popular areas of the site are the installation guides, as they are the practical resources installers need day in, day out. It’s encouraging to see that they’re already making good use of the tools available. We’re very pleased with interest so far. We are promoting the relaunched website across various media at the moment including an extensive email campaign to installers to inform them of the extra content available, and we can see a sharp increase in the amount of views already.

What feedback have you had? Feedback is telling us that installers like the immediacy of the Fit Franke First website. We have just completed some research in partnership with the iKBBI and know that 50% of installers now regularly use their mobile phone or tablet to complete a wide range of tasks, so they value the ease of access to the resources they need while they’re out and about, through the website. We will be asking our Fit Franke First members for feedback regularly so that we can adjust the website to be as useful and relevant as possible going forward.

“Planning a bathroom that will cater to the elderly or those with physical disabilities by providing easy access and simple manoeuvrability does not need to affect the overall look of the bathroom. Fashionable wet rooms and walk in shower enclosures are the dominant trend across all markets and they are also the best products on the market for allowing easy access” Sandra Hyde Marketing Manager of Fetim UK

WETROOM WATCH The shower industry has adapted to constant change in bathroom size, subsequently, UK manufacturers now offer a wider range of wetroom designs to accommodate almost any size and shape of bathroom. The installation of a wet room has also brought some much needed financial gain, adding greater value to your customers’ home, once fitted. Did you know that turning a cloakroom into a wet room, or adapting eave space to accommodate a new shower area can increase a homes value by up to 4%? This rise in wetroom popularity has led to the bathroom market becoming saturated with an array of different wetroom systems that all lay claim to being the best for you as an installer and also for your customers. Consequently, make sure you look at the design advantages that each unique system has to offer, how that relates to your customers requirements and budget, if the product offers a manufacturer guarantee, and what level of installation benefit it offers you, i.e. easy fit, safety assured, after-care requirements.

Sandra Hyde, Marketing Manager of Fetim UK says “Walk in shower enclosures create an expansive environment which allows the clean lines of the bathroom to flow. Reducing splashes and spills, the panels of glass protect the rest of the bathroom and keeps wet areas clearly confined and designated. Taking a pinch of style inspiration from wet rooms and infusing with the practical aspects of an enclosure, walk in showers act as a happy medium.”

Providing a multi-functional area that is on-trend and high in performance, a complete wetroom system can be installed far more quickly than a typical bathroom with sanitaryware suite where additional work, planning, expense and time is inevitable. Highly suitable for compact or awkward bathrooms, full wetroom designs have finally eradicated the need to install a bath. This revelation has also opened up a new world of cutting-edge technology for the bathroom, now enriching your customer’s wetroom experience for the better. Dave May, Technical Product Trainer at Aqualisa comments, “With the trend for userfriendly, tech bathrooms we’re seeing an increasing consumer demand for digital showers. That’s good news for installers as they’re so easy to fit, you can literally install a digital shower in five simple steps! Installation guides are provided on our new website, as well as a mobilefriendly parts store so you can literally order on the go.” The development and better understanding of wetrooms has also led to a greater desire for inclusive design, transforming the way customers are viewing their bathroom as they choose for their current requirements and for later in life. As a result, some premium manufacturers are offering a range of

wetrooms specifically tailored to suit all ages and they remain in line with current trends. “Planning a bathroom that will cater to the elderly or those with physical disabilities by providing easy access and simple manoeuvrability does not need to affect the overall look of the bathroom. Fashionable wet rooms and walk in shower enclosures are the dominant trend across all markets and they are also the best products on the market for allowing easy access” says Sandra Hyde of Fetim UK. Andrew Crellen, independent bathroom retailer and owner of The Bathroom Shop in Carlisle agrees with Hyde “Design features such as level access and doorless entry are now a common feature of the wetroom, eliminating awkward or laboured entry when showering. Whether a small child or tall adult, young or old, the 48

market now offers easy to install shower solutions that cater to every member of the family: ultimately making mine and your job that little bit easier”. European design is also worth mentioning, strongly influencing the latest wetroom designs coming to market: who says a wetroom needs to be all-glass with the standard white, acrylic shower tray? Instead, new materials such as wood, marble and natural stone are being introduced and rivalling the more common wetroom designs. Bill Garvey, Managing Director of William Garvey, shares his opinion on innovative wetroom design “Teak is the perfect choice of wood for wetroom application, shower trays, or anywhere that a tile covering is required in the bathroom. We offer a range of teak tiles that are waterproof and rot proof and this is achieved by using a teak veneer fused to a plastic backing which means there is no movement, shrinkage

or expansion to the tiles. Interlocking tongue and groove joints mean that you can install the tiles exceptionally quick and easy, and you can avoid the need for any unnecessary grouting: evading any ugly discolouration to the wood over time.” Sandra Hyde agrees with Bill “Natural materials such as stone, wood, metal and glass have been dominating modern interior design trends in 2015 and predicted to be prevalent throughout 2016 too. At our head office in Holland, the Fetim Group have a trend lab monitoring and tracking design trends which is fed into our product development and marketing departments. Typically shower and bathroom design is about creating an open, clean space with a luxurious feel so it is much more about the quality of materials used and the detail in the fixture and fittings. Chrome and polished metals and clear glass are still the most popular materials used. Matching or complementing different types of natural stone such as marble in one wetroom scheme is also extremely on-trend, creating the most beautiful and elegant wetroom areas. Matt Rotherham, Managing Director of J. Rotherham offers his advice on using marble “Dependent upon where you use the marble, it may make perfect sense to seal the stone, as once sealed, the stone is then protected against everyday dirt and wear. However, some topical sealers can alter the surface texture and finish, as well as build up on the surface creating a layer that is less durable than the stone in natural form. My advice is to consult a masonry expert who can give you their opinion in terms of what material to use, its application and appropriate finish or protection needed to get the desired results for your customer.” Shower panels designed specifically for wetrooms have also evolved, with some

manufacturers allowing the homeowner free reign in terms of colour and finish: so be prepared. David Osborne, Managing Director of Roman, comments “We are thrilled to be the first company in the bathroom industry to bring a new digital glass printing technology to wetroom panels. It gives a whole new dimension to creating your own unique and individual bathroom space.” Bringing a whole host of opportunities for your customer, personalised shower panels can now combine digital images upon the glass itself. Definitely an affordable choice, shower panels have become a great product alternative when considering a wetroom scheme. Expert knowledge, quality installation and reliable after-care service is crucial for your customers, so visit your local bathroom or wetroom merchant, talk to your suppliers, find out what the latest products are, and be confident in what’s available for you and your customers. www.aqualisa.co.uk www.aqualux.co.uk www.jrotherham.co.uk www.roman-showers.com www.thebathroomshop-carlisle.co.uk www.williamgarvey.co.uk

Water Saving

JUST GOING WITH THE FLOW? Can consumers understand the benefits and drawbacks of opting for water efficient products? Hayley Holland at Bristan discusses the role that installers play in water saving. Despite our famously wet climate, the UK has less available water per person than most European countries. London is drier than Istanbul, and the South East of England has less than Sudan and Syria. Yet the average Briton is still using 150 litres of water a day, a figure which climbs to an astonishing 4,645 litres when you include the water used to produce all our other daily consumables.

For homeowners looking to begin reducing water consumption, tap and shower models which feature an integrated flow regulator are great places to start.

In response, the UK Government has launched a raft of legislation and initiatives, with the aim of reducing water consumption by 20 per cent per person by 2030. Furthermore, by increasing energy-saving awareness consumers are becoming better educated with regard to using water more wisely. This benefits both the environment and household bills. Interestingly, a recent Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) consumer attitudes report discovered that at least 83 per cent of consumers agree that water-saving will become more important in the next five years. Critically, 51 per cent of those surveyed stated that they look to installers for guidance when choosing bathroom fittings. It's crucial for installers to be informed of the latest recommended water-saving products, and to be able to explain the benefits to their customers. 54

www.ikbbi.org.uk

Simple yet highly effective, flow regulators limit the flow of water through the product. Typically, a basin tap running at mains pressure can easily deliver in excess of twelve litres per minute. In comparison, flow regulated basin taps can limit flowrate to as little as two litres per minute!

ď ˛

Water Saving

Some brassware can be fitted with a device that offers subtle resistance at the halfway point, raising the user’s awareness of its flow. In addition, many showers are supplied with flow regulators, providing flows of around four to six litres per minute. Bristans's Artisan Evo Digital thermostatic mixer shower, includes builtin eco features that reduce water usage. Be aware, the reduction of water consumption can impact on the pressure of a shower and so it is good practice for the installer to inform the customer to avoid disappointment. A positive counter argument could be mentioning the benefit of water saving measures, especially lower water bills.

The cost savings can be significant; according to the Energy Saving Trust, if a family of four replaced their inefficient shower with a water-efficient one, they could save around £100 on their water bills (if they have a water meter) and reduce their gas bills by £65, this creates a combined annual saving of some £165! Water consumption is becoming a bigger issue year on year, and consumers look to installers to advise them on the best ways to reduce usage. For installers this is an opportunity to demonstrate expertise and gain an essential edge in the market. For more information on water-saving bathroom products visit:

The secret installer rides again

Jocky Flaming Wilson! … beware the perils of small talk Imagine the scenario, we’ve all been there, its mid-afternoon and you’ve been cracking on all day trying to get the island unit of this new open-plan kitchen your installing completed so you can get home for the weekend. You’re just fitting the hob when the homeowner, a nice enough fella, makes himself a cup of tea and then springs it on you that he has made one for you too. Reluctantly you feel obliged to accept and then the guy wants to make small talk, this happened to me last week and this is how the conversation went: H (homeowner) M (me) H M H M H M H M H M

“So how long have you been fitting kitchens then?” “About 15 years now” “Enjoy it?” “Yeah, it pays the bills” “What are your plans for the weekend?” “I might be back here just to finish off in the morning and then I’ll take my son to footie in the afternoon” “Who do you watch?” “He doesn’t watch, I watch him, he plays for his local team” “That’s nice, we’re a sporting family as well you know" “Actually, I had noticed all the darts trophies in your display cabinet” “Yeah, there’s a few aren’t there” (he says grinning) “Well you must be good mate cause I noticed that photo on the mantelpiece of you with Jocky Wilson”

Uncomfortable pause...

H “That’s not Jocky Wilson that’s my wife!” There was no way back from there, I wished the ground had opened up. I never did like Jocky Flaming Wilson!

V-ZUG launches a state-of-the-art built-in vacuum drawer Appliance manufacturer V-ZUG has launched its first vacuum drawer, making it easy for budding home cooks to prepare, cook and store food like the professionals. By stopping the food from being affected by ambient air or humidity, it helps to preserve its flavour, moisture, texture and nutrients. This can help to reduce waste as food can last longer and it can be portioned and readied for cooking at a later time in individual sealed bags. These benefits can now also be enjoyed at home using the V-ZUG vacuum drawer. Unlike freestanding appliances, this built-in vacuum drawer keeps worktops clear of clutter. It’s sleek, stylish and handle-less fascia means that it can integrate seamlessly into the kitchen.
