NEEL 51 trimaran has been awarded 2018 European Yacht of the Year at boot Dusseldorf. Fountaine Pajot and NEEL Trimarans, both exclusively represented in the Asia Pacific by Multihull Solutions, have scooped the categories at the prestigious 2018 Yacht of the Year awards. The remarkable NEEL 51 trimaran won 2018 European Yacht of the Year in the Multihull Category, announced at a prestigious ceremony on the flagship night of the boot Düsseldorf Show in Germany on 20 January. Fountaine Pajot’s Saona 47 catamaran was also one of the three category nominees at the awards evening, which was jointly hosted by Delius Klasing publishing house and Messe Düsseldorf. This catamaran also won the inaugural Christofle Yacht Style Award for “Best Multihull Sailing Yacht Under 15m” earlier in January. The groundbreaking MY 44 by Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts was awarded European Powerboat of the Year (35-45ft) at an awards ceremony in London. The impressive catamaran also won the ‘Passagemakers’ category of the 2018 Motor Boat Award run by Motor Boat and Yachting magazine earlier in the month. Awards judges said the MY 44 won the category for “teaming long distance capability with a useful turn of speed and tremendous living spaces.” “In a booming sector, this powercat is one of the best on the market,” the judges said. Multihull Solutions managing director Mark Elkington was at the 2018 European Yacht of the Year awards ceremony in Germany and said it was an honour to represent these world-leading shipyards. “We have always maintained that Fountaine Pajot and NEEL Trimarans produce the best power and sail catamarans on the market, and it’s gratifying to see their incredible models recognised with these prestigious awards,” Mark said. “These awards have traditionally gone to high-end monohull vessels, and after years of educating the boat-buying public, it’s great to see our multihulls now officially recognised by the international industry as the best boats within their market segment,” he said. Further details on the NEEL 51 and MY 44 can be obtained by contacting Multihull Solutions on 1300 855 338 (within Australia) or +61 7 5452 5164, emailing info@multihullsolutions.com.au or visiting the website at www.multihullsolutions.com.au.
We are proud to introduce our NEW DF325A – an outboard that perfectly balances awesome power and thrust, with outstanding fuel-efficiency and trusted reliability all within a lightweight and stylish design. Built with the every-day use of larger boats in mind, this market-leading new outboard has been engineered to run on 91 RON fuel and, as a world-first, is the first four stroke outboard over 300 horsepower to do so. The high-tech and innovative DF325A has been designed to be robust, easy to use and versatile, making it the ideal outboard for large boats whatever the task. Whether you are using your boat for work or play, wherever you are in the world, this new outboard is the ultimate choice.
91 RON FUEL
Our engineers set out to build a compact, lightweight outboard that combines the high power required, alongside the operating efficiencies that cannot be achieved by using technologies such as turbocharging or supercharging. Additionally, they set the goal of making the DF325A run on low octane, 91 RON fuel, which combined with legendary Suzuki reliability makes the outboard ideally

suited for a wide variety of large boats around the world. The latest high-spec, high-output outboards all require high-octane fuel. As far as we know, there is no outboard over 300 horsepower that runs on RON 91, which is regular fuel in some markets. The reality is, not everyone in the world can easily obtain high-octane fuel. Despite this, we wanted all of our Suzuki fans to be able to experience and enjoy our newest technology, no matter where they are in the world. We wanted them to be able to try the engine with the same fuel as the DF2.5. That is how the DF325A came to be. The DF325A is packed with the very latest outboard technologies. Among them, we are confident that the Dual Propeller System will provide the ultimate boating experience. Slick acceleration delivers a straight and true response. The DF325A has the ability to trace the exact line that the driver imagined - as if it were running on a rail. It’s also got brilliant deceleration with a total of 6 blades moving at the same time – yet another Suzuki innovation. Suzuki’s outboards are continually developed and evolved with our customer’s needs in mind and they are still evolving as we speak. Experience Suzuki’s newest high-end model, the one worthy of being named the ULTIMATE four stroke outboard. HULL CO., LTD. A masterpiece of engine design: STEYR MOTORS SEC 4-cylinder STEYR MOTORS is proud to present the SEC 4-cylinder, the world's Ürst monoblock common rail marine engine series The new SEC 4-cylinder with its distinctive design marks a seminal step in the STEYR MOTORS engine family. This is the first time that an enhanced common rail injection system has been used for a monoblock marine engine, a development that boosts performance as well as efficiency thus reducing fuel emissions. With its new SEC 4-cylinder engine series, system solution specialist STEYR MOTORS - a pioneer in the monoblock engine segment - drives engineering advances in the marine sector. The essential benefits, on the one hand, include the compact design, and power-to-weight ratio, but also the long service life and operational reliability of the monoblock engine. On the other, by ensuring greater efficiency, smooth and quiet operation, as well as lower emissions the common rail fuel injection technology will sustainably assert the SEC 4-cylinder engine's position in the market. Notable improvements regarding the efficiency of the combustion process – one major aspect of STEYR MOTORS' development work to meet future emission regulations – will drive investment in common rail technology while at the same time facilitating the current balancing act between power and emissions. On top of this, the new engine series impresses with service quality, ease of maintenance and advanced functionality. Moreover, based on a variety of options and system solutions, the engine can be designed to suit STEYR MOTORS’ customers’ individual requirements. The company from Steyr, Austria, is initially launching four different basic models of the SEC 4-cylinder engine series – from 59 to 129 kW. In the future, IoT solutions, which the company is currently developing

in the form of a new service tool, will also play a decisive role. De-tailed information on the installed engine is provided, thus, preventing the drive system from serious damage thanks to condition monitoring, identifying maintenance requirements at an early stage, simplifying and shortening maintenance services, and optimizing engine development.
A marine engine with a state-of-art design Rarely marine engines have such a high recognition value like the STEYR MOTORS SEC 4-cylinder. Its modern design idiom was created by the Aberjung design agency. "The objective was to give our product family a self-confident, dynamic and premium design idi-om and ensure that the individual engines have a new look that stands the test of time. This im-pression is reinforced by both the silver-and-red color scheme, for which STEYR MOTORS is well-known, and their external shape. This was a task that Aberjung fulfilled most impressively", says Dipl. Ing. Michael Aschaber, Managing Director of STEYR MOTORS.
Design drives sales The SEC 4-cylinder is well conceived regarding engineering and design. Both focal points were essential requirements in product engineering and were sustainably implemented in the new generation of engines. For the company it is becoming increasingly decisive to reconcile func-tionality and aesthetic appeal. While the robust and proven technology of the monoblock engine gives customers the assurance they need, the innovative common rail system stands for for ward-looking engineering. Styling and customization options boost its perceived value and ap-peal to the customer's emotions. Some designs have become classics in the course of history, and this is the intent with the SEC 4-cylinder. For DI (FH) Christoph Aschaber from the Aberjung design agency, product design is turning into a major sales motivator. "Styling is playing an increasingly important role, also for capital goods – such as the STEYR MOTORS engines. The underlying idea is to not only generate visual ap-peal but, even more importantly, to support the product's functionality. Also, the various covers add a certain calmness and provide a focal point for the composition driven by technical requirements. Port Takola Yacht Marina was a hostg venue for a Krabi stop of the 2nd Sail Thailand Rally on the 27th of January 2018. Sail Thailand is a not-for profit rally that is organized by volunteers and partners to promote social sailing and tourism. The rally was also sponsored by Tourism Authority of Thailand to promote yachting tourism. This year, the rally has 22 boats participating from Australia, the U.S., Canada, Netherlands, New Zealand, U.K., Germany, Switzerland, and Asia. The Rally started in Langkawi, moved on to Satun, onto Phuket, then sailed Phang Nga Bay before stopping in Krabi and finishing the rally at Phuket Yacht Haven. Port Takola was a host venue for the Krabi stop where sailors were greeted with a reception party at the marina and experienced a Krabi cultural program. The marina recently completed its power installation in December. So, the occasion also commemorated it’s soft opening with an arrival of the rally. The sailors were greeted with elephants and fresh coconut priors to the party reception. The reception featured special entertainment guests including the Royal Thai Navy Orchestra band. Mrs. Nadda Viyakarn (a golden voice singer), and Mrs. Boom Panadda Wongphudee (Miss Thailand 2000). Matthew na Nagara, the marina’s general manager said, “We had a really special event this year. The rally experienced authentic Thai culture with fantastic food & music. The dinner was prepared by the Krabi Restaurant Association so it is a collection Krabi’s best cuisine. Krabi’s motto is ‘Lively town and lovely people’ and this is what sailors can expect when visiting Krabi and our marina.” After completing electrical supply installation, Port Takola Yacht Marina is now a port of call when visiting Krabi due to its convenient location between Krabi Town, and the tourist town of Ao Nang. It provides both wet berthing and boatyard services. There is also a 40% discount to commemorate the soft opening. There is also 25% early bird discount for boatlifting. RLIR continues to shine & lure sailors to northern Malaysia From the ¿les of Captain Marty Rijurkis, the famous sailing scribe and founder or the Asian Yachting Grand Prix (asianyachting.com)

Setting sail The Royal Langkawi International Regatta is the first international regatta of the year in the region, and it is the perfect place for sailors to celebrate the New Year in style. Since the regatta’s inception, the main aim has always been to provide competitive and enjoyable racing for all crews, irrespective of the design or vintage of yacht. This year, twenty-six racing teams fought it out on picturesque Bass Harbour and the coastal courses, to the East of Langkawi. The fleet was split into six classes, ranging from some newbies to regular competitors, all excited about fighting over the class titles again. Teams competed for the Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy (Racing Class), the LADA-IRC Challenge Trophy (IRC 1 class), RLIR-IRC2 Challenge Trophy (IRC 2 class), the Commodore’s Challenge Cup (Club Cruising Class) as well as the Malaysia Multihull Challenge Cup (Multihull class). Philip Turner’s Reichel-Pugh 66 Alive was back trying to reclaim the title they won in 2016, but facing some stiff competition from the Whitcraft family’s all conquering TP52 THA 72 who hoped to defend their 2017 title and continue on with their regatta winning streak, since arriving in Southeast Asian waters.
Always big supporters of the regatta, the Royal Malaysian Armed Forces Sail Association entered their DK47 Uranus skippered by Salleh Ahmad with Hairolnizam Hat captaining their Farr 520 Zuhal, thereby covering all aspects of the predicted wind range. Vincent Chan's all Malaysian Team on his Titan 36 Mata Hari are the defending IRC 1 champions but were taking on five bigger yachts this year; Geoff Masters Mills 41 Meraki, John Kara's Beneteau First 45 Insanity, Max Palleschi's IOR Farr 40 Prime Factor and Kazuki Kihara's First 40.7 Char Chan (Ex Karasu and multiple King's Cup winner), before they can add another LADA-IRC Challenge Trophy to their mantelpiece. Reduced IRC 2 entries this year, found Jeremy Camps Impala 28 OOD Old Pulteney Blue Angel, and the famous Rahim brothers on J92 S Nijinsky, taking on Niels Degenkolw's, multiple RLIR winning X 3/4 ton Mk2 Phoenix, expecting to add their name to the RLIR IRC 2 Challenge Trophy again. Four very different multihull craft, ranging from Robert van Paridon's huge 12.81m trimaran and defending champion Tantrum Too, down to Gerhard Pils nippy Pulse 600 Fetz Ma. Anna in between. This is a lively combination of craft to follow, as best performances are reliant on weather conditions. With ten yachts entered in the Cruising Classes, the Ocean Rover class shapes up for a ding-dong battle of the United Nations. Ramasamy Menon's Dehler 38 VG Offshore is back to defend the title and renew their battle with Aussie rival Chris Mitchell's Naut 40 Lady Bubbly. While this is going on, keep a watchful eye on past winner Kiwi Philip Auger's Davidson 35 Sophia, Japan's Yasuto Fuda's Yamaha 31 Fortissimo X, the Russians on Sergey Dikanov's Jeanneau One Design Southern Breeze 3 and more Aussies on Tristram Denyer's Baveria 37 Iseulta will not be giving an inch away and are all capable of securing the title on their day. A’dale Adham Ayahudin's Oyster 55 Chantique and USA's Jack Christensen's Bavaria 49 Linda would fight it out in the Ocean Rover class. This event is now the seventh point scoring regatta on the annual AsianYachting Grand Prix (AYGP) and gives Kevin Whitcraft's TP52 THA 72, Philip Turner’s Reichel-Pugh 66 Alive skippered by Duncan Hine, Niels Degenkolw's X3/4 Ton MK2 Phoenix and Chris Mitchell's Naut 40 Lady Bubbly
big chances to improve their standings and the possibility of taking over the leader board.
Wrapping Up Although there were a few little ripples on Kua Harbour, PRO Simon James and his race team found nine knots on the coastal course area to the East of Langkawi and it was full steam ahead to finish the regatta. Two windward/ leeward races and it was all over. Then back to the marina to pack up the yachts and the closing dinner and prize presentation party. In some classes the overall result was already decided but they were all out on the water, in an act of sportsmanship to enjoy the final races. With only a couple of points separating the leaders, all eyes were on the IRC 1, Multihull, Club and Ocean Rover classes to see who would come out on top. Although struggling with the wind strength all week, racing was held each day on a variety of courses and everyone is happy with how it has turned out. There was no stopping Kevin Whitcraft's TP52 THA 72 and the crew’s faultless performance, winning 6 of the 7 races and defending the Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy in grand style. The Royal Malaysian Armed Forces Sail Association DK47 Uranus skippered by Salleh Ahmad, put up a good fight and were
Frank Pong's “Round the Islands” race record of 02:14:53 set on his RP75 Jelik, in 2014 on the 28nm course, still stands.

the only yacht to take a win away from THA 72, thereby ending up in 2nd place. Despite the canting keel not working and being pinned in the middle, Philip Turner’s Reichel-Pugh 66 Alive carried on for the rest of the regatta with the injury and slotted into 3rd overall, in front of the RMAF's second yacht Zuhal skippered by Hairolnizam Hat. Coming into the final day’s racing, Vincent Chan's Titan 36 Mata Hari KL Registry had a one-point lead and were determined to wrap up the series. However, they didn't have it all their own way, as Kazuki Kihara's First 40.7 Char Chan won the first race and evened up the score. Further match racing skills were needed in the pre-start and Mata Hari KL Registry led off the line in both races. Enjoying the increase in wind strength, Geoff Masters Mills 41 Meraki led the fleet around the course and managed to take the daily double in the last race. Then all eyes were on the duel going on behind. Char Chan crossed the line 45 seconds in front of Mata Hari KL Registry and the calculators were burning hot. Mata Hari KL Registry claimed 2nd place by one second in front of Char Chan in 3rd. After the drop race they ended up tied on 9 points, with 3 wins and 3 second places apiece. As Char Chan scored 3rd place in the last race, it paved the way for Chan's Mata Hari KL Registry to defend the IRC 1 title and claim the LADA-IRC Chal-
lenge Trophy in the process. Meraki placed 3rd overall and kept the dueling leaders honest. By winning all 7 races, Niels Degenkolw's X ¾ ton Mk2 Phoenix made a clean sweep of the IRC 2 class and defended the RLIRIRC2 Challenge Trophy in fine style. Although Jeremy Camps Impala 28 OOD Old Pulteney Blue Angel and Amir Zohri's J92 S RSYC Nijinsky exchanged 2nd and 3rd places on the last day, Old Pulteney Blue Angel string of 2nd places earned them 2nd overall, while Nijinsky settled for 3rd in the overall stakes. Although Gerhard Pils nippy Pulse 600 Fetz Ma pulled off two daring port tack starts on the final day, Robert van Paridon's 12.81m trimaran Tantrum Too, did better in the choppy seaway and scored two wins, to take the overall lead back from Fetz Ma and take home the Multihull Challenge Cup for the second year in succession. Bob McIntyre's Stealth 13 Allegro couldn't match the dueling leaders and 3rd place is the best they could do in the circumstances. The Russians on Stas Pechenkin's Jeanneau One Design Southern Breeze 3 led the Club Class since Day 1 and by winning the first race on the final day, cemented their position at the top of the table. Despite the mainsail coming down on the final upwind leg, they strapped it on the boom and continued on, launching the spinnaker on the downwind leg and still ended up in 3rd place. Despite all this, they have withstood
23
all the challenges and juggling of places, to win the class and the Commodore’s Challenge Cup on their first attempt. The Japanese on Yasuto Fuda's Yamaha 31 Fortissimo X slipped of the pace and the Aussie's on Tristram Denyer's fast charging Baveria 37 Iseulta scored 2nd and 1st places on the final day, to become tied with Fortissimo X on 17 points each. Having claimed two wins earlier on, Fortissimo X took second spot with Iseulta finishing third overall. In the Ocean Rover Class, A’dale Adham Ayahudin's Oyster 55 Chantique were up for the challenge and determined to make up for the second last day’s poor performance. Jack Christensen's Bavaria 49 Linda were on the comeback trail, but a back row start in the first race, then ripping the headsail and retiring from the second race, saw their chances go down the drain. By winning both races Chantique becomes the Ocean Rover champion and keep the raucous crew and “the Legend” KP Waran very happy. Bernard Di Tullio's Indulgence struggled in the light weather for speed and 3rd overall was the best they could achieve. The special "Tunku Abdullah Sportsmanship" award in memory of the late Regatta Founding Chairman and RLYC Commodore Tunku Tan Sri Abdullah, is voted for on by the participants and awarded for competitiveness, fair racing and comradeship, both on-and-off the water. This year, the award went to the all
Malay team on Vincent Chan's Titan 36 Mata Hari KL Registry. A special mention goes out to Superintendent Tharamadurai Ramanathan and the Royal Malaysian Police, Marine Division for providing security, safety, start boat PA 50, speedboats RH 9 and RH 55. This is the 16th challenging year, they have provided the service and believe me when I say, we couldn't do it without them. The marina has played host to many worldwide travelers and lured sailors from around the globe to explore the 100-island group with inland lakes, sandy beaches, limestone karsts and mesmerizing folklore, all within easy reach of the yacht club. The Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) is organized by the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC), sanctioned by World Sailing and the Malaysian Sailing Association (MSA), and supported by the Ministry of Youth & Sports, Malaysia and the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA). here’s a brand new breed of sailing and motor multihulls on the market right now: BALI Catamarans. World-renowned French shipyard Catana has over 30 years of experience in designing and building top class racing catamarans already. Now they have branched out to create something innovative and contemporary for the next generation of cruising sailors – elegant and seaworthy yachts that incorporate the very latest in design and technology. BALI Catamarans are only three years old, but the yachts are already receiving awards and accolades from the boating community. Naval Architect Xavier Fay and designer Olivier Poncin have created a unique and stylish yacht. In conjunction with interiors from the Lasta De-
sign Studio, they merged ergonomic fluid shapes with natural light to make for a more enjoyable and comfortable onboard sailing experience. Northrop and Johnson Asia have teamed up with BALI Catamarans. N&J Asia CEO Bart Kimman points out that “Asia has long led the way in retail multihull sales. Now the global charter companies are developing their catamaran charter fleets in the top destinations in Asia: multihulls are practical and desirable, and they are here to stay. BALI Catamarans are looking to significantly grow their market share; teaming up with the renowned Catana Group to launch the range in Asia, is a dream come true. Combining state of the art construction with the most innovative designs in the industry, I look forward to see the first

boats arrive in the summer of 2018. Our team will focus on a successful market introduction in the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.” The sailing range starts with the BALI 4.0 (40ft) and currently goes up to the BALI 5.4 (55.2 ft). Even the baby of the fleet, the 4.0, shows off many of the features that make BALI Catamarans stand out from the pack. Gone is the trampoline ‘foredeck’, replaced by a large forward cockpit that constitutes another dining and sunbathing area with easy access to the galley. The L-shaped saloon provides an extremely large living space, entirely free of bulkheads, and accessed via an immense folding glazed door. There’s an integral aft platform that joins the two hulls, and a large relaxing area on the coach roof for taking in those breath-taking views. BALI Catamarans boast more entertainment space than boats of this size usually offer. Add in the reassuring high freeboards and high bridge deck clearance, and you have a yacht with optimal sea-keeping qualities wrapped around the very best of contemporary interior design. All the BALI Catana models offer an extraordinary ‘inside meets outside’ experience, with natural light and ventilation enhanced by the wide folding and sliding windows. Privacy and intimacy are also ensured by clever design options that allow for shared or individual bathrooms for owners' and guest cabins. There’s one power cat option on offer, the BALI 4.3 m/y,
and it offers the same innovations that make the BALI sailing versions so successful. Greg Dagge, N&J Asia Brand Manager for BALI Catamarans in Asia, says, “We are very excited to be involved at this stage of BALI Catamarans’ evolution. Catana have created a compelling series of design breakthroughs (including the loft, or bow lounge). The hugely experienced N&J Asia team in our strategically-positioned offices around the region, believe that this new range of catamarans is a game changer in all categories of ownership: Private, Shared or Charter. N&J Asia will be there to service all three”.

The Hallmark of Distinction Designed and fitted out with people who like to express their individuality in mind, the Gran Turismo 50 has elegant and intelligently organized spaces. This space’s high level of equipment, repeated in the cockpit with a small exterior galley, and a grill-cum-worktop above the swim platform, mean that everyone enjoys cooking and preparing food on the Gran Turismo 50. Hardtop or Sportfly, this new Gran Turismo is a sensational sport cruiser offering plenty of thrills. It confirms Beneteau’s extraordinary ability to stand out in the large cruiser market.
Elegance, quality fittings, top-level finish and sensations guaranteed.
32
Beneteau Gran Turismo 40 & 46 Harmonious throughout, many of the details on the Gran Turismo 40 boat underline the balance between her strong sporting character and the type of functions you might expect for a pleasant, luxurious yet practical life on board. Ingeniously combining the protection afforded by a hard-top boat and the sensations of an open craft, the Gran Turismo 40 has a hard top which can be pushed right back. The electrically powered sideglazing means that the ultra-spacious cockpit can be freed totally to accommodate up to twelve people. The conversion of the cockpit seating into immense sun-loungers increases still further the boat’s relaxation space, adding to the boat’s already generous 4m² sunbaths with adjustable backrests up on the foredeck. No detail has been overlooked. The GT46 is the second model in this new generation of Beneteau-designed Sports Cruisers, and although similar in style and spirit to the GT40, it represents a significant step forwards in terms of customization, quality of materials and finish. Despite being resolutely sporty in character, it is also designed to ensure high levels of safety combined with a sumptuous décor.

T
he third Wonderful Indonesia Nongsa Regatta was a three-day event held in strong winds in late January. Staged at the Nongsa Point Marina & Resort in Batam, Indonesia, the regatta has replaced the Singapore Straits Regatta, which was held in mid-January annually. Moving forward, regatta organizer Prakash Reddy says the regatta will be held annually during the final weekend of January. Nine keelboats competed in regatta, all from Singapore with four of them coming from Singapore Management University (SMU). Many of SMU’s sailors are female and in this regatta two of the skippers were female as well. No university in Southeast Asia has a more active sailing program than SMU and it proved it once again with four entries, and a group of ex-SMU students crewing on another boat as well. It’s too bad universities in other Southeast Asian countries don’t follow suit and give SMU other university teams to race against. Three J24s and two Platu 25s were entered in the keelboat division along with a Nelson 10, a Young 88, a Mumm 30, and a Lauranus L34. When the wind did die down on day three, the weather did favour the Platus and J24s. Five first-place finishes gave Kurt Metzger's Nelson 10 Waka Tere the overall championship with 21 points. Waka Tere was followed by the dueling Platu 25s: Bernice Foo Ling Li's Platu 25 SMUVE followed by Koh Ling Ying's Platu 25 SMUMAD, who battled back and forth all regatta. An OCS that SMUMAD didn't respond to, was the difference giving SMUVE 2nd spot overall with 23 points, while SMUMAD settled for third with 25 points.

Regatta organizer & marina manager Prakash Reddy did a great job of organizing the event.

Nongsa Point Marina & Resort features 65 world-class berths designed by Bellingham Marina.
Fourth spot, went to the top J24 in the race Christian Mark Chang Kah Fai's J24 Shengli, while Gordon Maxted's Young 88 Shoon Fung Too took 5th place. Zaheera Hashim's J24 Balqis was the second best J24 during the event; finishing in front of the bigger Rebecca Goh Su Min's J24 Quarterdeck, in 7th. Justin Lean's Mumm 30 Invictus and Simon Piff's Lauranus L34, Rainbow Dream, rounded out the fleet finishing eighth and ninth overall. The individual J24 Class saw Christian Mark Chang Kah Fai's J24 Shengli capture the division with a 6-point overall total, winning six of the nine races sailed. Zaheera Hashim's J24 Balqis came in second on 12 points, with two victories, and Rebecca Goh Su Min's J24 Quarterdeck finished in third with 14 points, winning one race. When the northeast monsoon blows, and it really does at this time of the year, there’s no lack of good wind and that’s what the participants saw, for the most part-continuous strong wind. The regatta also saw 20 optimists and 10 Laser 4.7s completing over two days of sailing on a short course within the marina confines. Young Indonesians from the Riau Yacht Club competed in the tree classes it was amazing to see the composure and confidence they showed on the water. Optimist Boys saw 16 entrees race eight races with one discard. They must be putting something in the water in Terengganu because their lads dominated the Optimist Boys Class with Muh Faizuddin Bin Mohd Fauzi, Muh Luqman Hakim Bin Mansor & Muh Afiq Hakim Bin Razali finishing 1, 2, 3, overall, in that order; while Sarmila from Kaltim, Putri Farid from Kepri & Cinta Bella also from Kepri were the highest finishers in the Optimist’s Girls, going 1,2, & 3. In the Laser 4.7 class it was Umar Al Farouk and Asmawi Bin Azman from Terengganu in first and second spot respectively, and Ramadhan Tito from Kepri in third spot. There was also a radio-controlled boat race, featuring six boats, and the winner was Geoff Shepherd from the UK with Bart Ouwerling from the Netherlands taking second spot and Australian Mark Biggs placing third. The same win, place and show finishings as the previous year. This was the third regatta that the
Nongsa Point Marina & Resort has staged in its 27-year history, though it does play host to the Neptune Regatta on its way out and back from the equator and in the past, it also hosted the Singapore Straits Regatta. Regatta organizer and Marina Manager Prakash Reddy again did a superb job of making sure that all ran smoothly. Race officers came from Indonesia while support boats came from Raffles Marina, Marina@Keppel Bay, and Focus Adventure. Rona, a 123-year-old classic sailing yacht was the spectator and local media boat while Tan Thong Meng, the Marina Manager for Marina@Keppel Bay kindly drove the foreign media around. The regatta has a tough time gaining entrees as it is held soon after the Royal Langkawi International Regatta, days before the Bay Regatta and about a week-and-half before the Neptune Regatta. The first three regattas at Nongsa have had nine boats each; let’s try and give Prakash a hand to help this regatta grow. Nongsa Point is superb spot from which to stage a regatta and the winds are usually good, so we just need more sailors to enter the event. Indroyono Soesilo AIndroyono Soesilo, Advisor to the Minister for Tourism, in conjunction with Colin Bransgrove awarded Nongsa Point Marina & Resort with the Marina Industries Association Gold Anchor award, becoming the first marina in Indonesia to receive this prestigious award.
The Marina Nongsa Point Marina & Resort features 65 world-class berths designed by globally acclaimed Bellingham Marina, including two berths for mega-yachts up to 130 feet. Each berth comes with a dedicated utility pedestal with electricity and water. The marina is also equipped with a mobile sewerage pump out system that can be brought to each berth. A central fuel jetty is available to provide both diesel and gasoline. Boats must be insured to be operated in Indonesian waters, against loss, damage, fire, third-party and other liabilities. Nongsa is in a strategic location for yachts to stopover heading to/from the South China Sea, to the Straits of Malacca or south to Bali/Jakarta. The restaurant/bar is open 24hrs; hotels and villas are available for daily or long-term rental or lease. Most common services can be done in Batam – mechanical and electrical. OIL & FUEL SERVICES
acer Marina facilities provide used oil and fuel collection services. Oil that can be disposed includes: - used crankcase (engine) oil - used liquid and semi-liquid gear oil - used hydraulic oil - oil and fuel Ålters Racer Marina can also collect: - used batteries - used Æares - antifreeze and coolant liquid - used electronic Waste oil has a large environmental impact on the marine industry because it is insoluble in water, persistent, and laced with toxic chemicals and heavy metals. Used oil is often improperly dropped in the sea and contaminates marine life. Racer Marina wants to help clean up its local environment; that is why its sends the oil it collects to be recycled at professional factories.

T
he 17th Asia Superyacht Rendezvous Cup (ASR Cup) welcomed majestic superyachts to host venue Sala Phuket Resort & Spa for a unique event where yacht owners, captains, crews, guests and invited VIPs enjoyed the fabulous hospitality of the venue featuring special social and racing events. Headquarters for the ASR Cup for the second year, the Sala Phuket Resort & Spa provided the best in accommodation, combining rare historical Sino-Portuguese architecture with luxury hotel facilities. The glittering gem is situated on one of the most dramatic settings in Phuket on secluded Mai Khao Beach. Starting off on January 19th was the Opening Day Cocktail Party aboard the absolutely stunning S/Y La Numero Uno, (ex-Clan VI), a 131ft sailing yacht & Perini Navi’s first-ever constructed yacht. Welcomed by hosts Mick and Som Cotter, upon arriving by tender guests were introduced to world-renowned bartender Salim Khoury (formerly of The Savoy), mixing up his famous cocktail ‘The Blushing Monarch’, inspired by the late Princess Diana. Ensuring a sumptuous cuisine matched the libations was Executive Chef Fabrizio Demichelis of Phuket’s own Trattoria del Buongustaio, serving up his incredible tapas throughout the evening. The luxury yacht was completely refitted in 2014 and can accommodates 12 guests in five comfortable cabins. She has entered the twenty-first century with the most advanced technology, accommodations and toys required by the most discerning sailors.
The ASR is longest-running event of its type in Asia. When she was launched, La Numero Uno was also the first fully automated superyacht ever fitted with a ballasted swing keel that retracts into a shallow fixed keel and is raised by an electric winch. True to form, she has circumnavigated the globe and merges innovative design, cutting-edge technology and graceful lines to provide a world-class sailing experience. She has been restored to immaculate, stylish elegance and this exceptional yacht offered invited guests an unrivalled experience at the opening night party and an opportunity to view La Numero Uno in all of her glory while at anchor. Saturday offered just the sort of weather conditions needed to get the fleet going. It was a beautiful day out on Mai Khao Bay on Race Day 1, beginning with nice northeast winds. However, due to a few maintenance issues on the yachts, race time was pushed back to 12:15pm with wind wrapping around toward the west. S/Y Intrigue kicked things off by crossing the start line two seconds early, causing them to have to restart incidentally at the opposite end of S/Y Aphrodite and S/Y La Numero Uno, giving them a big advantage with wind direction. By first mark, S/Y Intrigue was half a leg in front of the others, by second mark more than a leg ahead and by third mark had lapped S/Y La Numero Uno for the win. The final standing for the first racing day was S/Y Intrigue, S/Y Aphrodite and S/Y La Numero Uno. Intrigue is 24.55m sloop built by Yachting Developments; launched in 2005, it’s sophisticated exterior design and engineering are the work of Dubois Naval Architects. While Aphrodite, a Hoek design, is a 43m superyacht built in the Vetters shipyard and launched in 1999.

ASR
continues to dazzle & delight Photos by Jessi Cotterill, Asia Superyacht Rendezvous Cup
50
Following the races and as the weather cleared, guests and crew gathered on the lawns of the beautiful Sala Phuket Resort for the popular “Challenge”, the ASR Cup model boat evening races. While guests were treated to a special buffet the crews of the participating yachts and sponsors were hard at work, each with a secret “bag of bits” (some of balsa, polystyrene, sticky tape and string) creating and building their own model sailing boats. After building their boats, superyacht crew member teams compete in heats of two - by one team member blowing with all their might into the tiny sails of their vessel as each boat floats along a three-foot trough while those watching cheer on their favorites. This year, 10 teams battled it out for the ASR Cup Model Boat-Building & Racing events, including: Aphrodite; Sunrays 1; La Numero Uno; Intrigue; Darling; Aveline; Stereden; Seraph; Siam Princess; and Sunrays 2. The “Best Design” award went to M/Y Darling. But alas, there can only be one champion and after a cheerful evening of laughter, enthusiastic applauding and a few sunken model yachts, it came down to S/Y Aphrodite and S/Y Seraph. After inspection of the yachts, the intense battle began, ending with S/Y Aphrodite coming in first! The final day of racing proved to be both exciting and unique, getting two races in just after 1pm with great wind and a few scattered showers. Race one of day two started off fantastically, seeing a four-second gap between S/Y Intrigue and S/Y Aphrodite by the second buoy. However, an unfortunate rip to the spinnaker of S/Y Intrigue allowed S/Y Aphrodite to catch up and maintain distance, coming in at the finish just two minutes behind. However, corrected time proved S/Y Aphrodite the winner, leaving both boats with one 1st and one 2nd place standing and S/Y La Numero Uno with two 3rd place standings. The final race was run on a straight up-and-down course using the updated handicaps, which created a unique finish with both S/Y Aphrodite and S/Y Intrigue coming in at 33:05. However, because each boat had the same standings prior to the third and final race, and race three could not conclude the winner with an identical finish, a few quick phone calls were made to a World Sailing Technical Delegate, with confirmation that the winner of the second overall race would be named champion. Leaving a final standing of S/Y Aphrodite, S/Y Intrigue and S/Y La Numero Uno respectively. “Very rarely do we have boats finish in that closely. And I think the key is that it shows that we are making an effort to allow similar boats, which always can be different sizes, to compete,” race officer Simon James said of the extraordinary finish. A little rain couldn’t stop the Owners and VIP grand finale Gala Dinner, set on the beautiful lawns of Sala Phuket Resort, where guests enjoy a delicious 8-course meal as the sounds of Mai Khao Bay’s surf melded beautifully with the stylings of the Colin ‘Illy’ Hill Band. Phuket Vice Governor Norraphat Plodthong joined in the celebration, stating: “I am very honoured to be here for this year’s ASR Cup Superyacht Rendezvous. I want to thank the owners and captains for bringing their superyachts to Phuket and am hopeful that they will return for next year’s event. “ During the Awards Ceremony Captain Simon Blundell of S/Y Aphrodite happily accepted this year’s ASR Winner’s Cup, reclaiming victory for the second year in a row, saying, “What magnificent racing… we loved it. This is what we are here for, to have sailing like that with company like you guys. It’s just as good as it gets. We can’t look forward enough to next year,” enthused Captain Simon, adding, “The Feng Shui will now work better in our salon with two trophies, and we’ll be back next year for a third!”

She has truly entered the 21st Century with the most advanced technology, luxurious accommodation and a selection of water toys to offer our broad range of guests. “La Numero Uno” was the first yacht to be constructed at the high-class Italian shipyard Perini Navi, which became world-famous for its élite Superyachts, such as The Maltese Falcon. “La Numero Uno’s” interior is beautifully designed and finished in the finest quality woodwork with classic, beautiful furnishings made from the best quality fabrics. A full-beam Master cabin located aft, has private access from the main deck, offering a walk-in closet and ensuite toilet and shower facilities. The two VIP Suites have Queen-size beds and can be connected to a very large family suite. When launched, “La Numero Uno” was also the first fully automated Superyacht ever fitted with a ballasted swing keel that retracts into a shallow fixed keel and is raised by an electric winch. This has proved to be an excellent design feature, which allows it’s Australian Captain, Mick Cotter and his crew of six, to ‘get in closer’ to shallower waters of the stunning reefs, coves and pure white beaches the region has to offer. True to form, she has also circumnavigated the globe and she merges innovative design, cutting-edge technology and graceful lines to provide a world-class sailing experience. Serenity sparking
Rawai renaissance
L
ocated in Rawai, the Serenity Resort & Residences, lies right on the edge of the Andaman Sea, in a peaceful corner of Phuket on the island’s east coast. This area retains much of its past heritage and is not overcrowded— it’s simply a great place to relax and unwind away from Phuket’s busier tourist hubs. SEA Yachting does not tend to do hotel reviews; in fact, the only one we have ever done is the Mövenpick Siam Hotel Na Jomtien Pattaya, when it opened next to Ocean Marina. But we do like to draw attention to resorts that are yachtie-friendly and Serenity fits that bill It has been the venue for closing parties for both the Bay Regatta and Multihull Solutions Regatta over the years. And it has donated a number of prizes (free nights at the resort) to winning competitors of the local racing scene run by the Phuket Yacht Club. Urs Aebi is the General Manager of Triple C Resorts & Hotels, the company that manages Serenity. Urs’ teenage son King was the star of the 2016 Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek regatta, where he helped sail a two-person Corsair from Java Catamarans. As there weren’t many young Thai sailors participating, he quickly became the star of the Thai media.
59
Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek takes place from the 18th - 22nd July this year and is based at the five-star Cape Panwa Hotel. Regatta organizer Byron Jones tells us, "Entries are already rolling in with many regulars returning as well as many entries from Australia; it looks like the Platu One Design fleet is back, the Pulse 600s are fully booked and the Firefly 850 one-design class is also taking shape, coupled with our very competitive 40-foot class, giving us every reason to be confident of the continued success and growth of our event." #phuketsailing.
Urs tells us that Serenity has 53 rooms, suites, two-bedroom apartments and two-bedroom pool villas. Their suites (80m2) and apartments (150m2) are incredibly spacious—some of the biggest on the island—and great value for the money; and all include a fully-equipped kitchen. Serenity offers top-of-the-line facilities, including a fitness center & beach lounge, giving guests plenty to do on site. The resort also offers regular free shuttle service to Nai Harn Beach because swimming in the sea in front of the hotel is restricted, especially at low tide. There’s also a regular free evening shuttle service to Patong Beach. The resort’s restaurant, East 88 Restaurant & Beach Lounge was outsourced 18 months ago to Byron and Rung Jones, the Serenity GM K Urs and their company, Taste Phuket Co., Ltd. The Joneses also run a successful radio station (Phuket FM Radio 91.5 and 102.5FM), and a successful regatta, Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek, which this year runs from July 18th - 22nd. As Serenity guests come from all the world East 88 has a diverse international and Thai food. Drop-in guests are welcome as well: they can sit and relax poolside for a Bt400 service charge. The staff at East 88 are
very attentive & friendly, and will make sure all your culinary needs are met. The restaurant stages a “weigh and pay” seafood & meat BBQ on Friday nights from 7pm onwards, where guests are serenaded by classic guitar tunes with Edwin Consador, allowing you to enjoy the epic views over the water along with great live entertainment and culinary specialties from hot and spicy southern dishes to the best and freshest seafood. The resort uses Limestone Adventures for boat requests from its guests, but most of these are for motor yachts. It doesn’t have a specific contact with any sailing boat rental company, but Serenity can arrange a sailing charter if a guest desires. Serenity is part of the Rawai Nai Harn Business Association, a group of independent companies in the southern Phuket who joined together to promote Rawai & Nai Harn. The resort prides itself on its friendly and attentive staff, who take the time to ensure that each guest feels welcomed, at home, and pampered. Serenity lives up to its name; there’s no through traffic, and it’s truly a great place to unwind and discover a part of Phuket that you make not be that familiar with. A stone’s throw away is Friendship Beach with its well-known Atmanjai Wellness Spa. And a short drive to the left brings you to the heart of Rawai; while a short drive to the right takes you into heart of Ao Chalong. Lots to see and do when you’re not relaxing.

According to the Event CEO, GaÍl Burlot, sales at the show exceeded US$23 million with more transactions expected post-event. "We have witnessed a high number of quality visitors and good sales volume at the show. Both indicate strong growth in the regional marine industry and the PHUKET RENDEZVOUS clearly reinforces the island's position as one of the most prominent yachting hubs in Asia. We would like to thank all our supporters and partners in this enterprise and hope their trust in the new venture was fully justified.
