The ILIAD 60 motor yacht has been nominated in the 2022 Multihull of the Year award in the MultiYacht category, which is a superb testament to the features and quality of the shipyard’s range. The ILIAD 60 is not due for release until early 2022 but has been recognised by the judging panel with a particular acknowledgment of the model’s emphasis on “controlling fuel consumption in order to extend the range to over 3,500 miles.” The awards are run by leading international magazines Multihulls World and Multicoques Mag with a judging panel comprising some of the world’s leading boating experts. Optimal safety is assured with clutter-free decks, wide walkways, and full composite-built stairwell with ergonomic handrails to the flybridge. The ILIAD Power of Choice allows owners to express their individuality with the flexibility to choose their preferred layout, finishes and options at a price that challenges most production power catamarans. Indonesia Quarantine drops to 3 days for International Visitors

IN MEMORIAM

Indonesia cuts quarantine period for foreign visitors to three days from the earlier reported five days. “In fact, all nationalities are allowed in if via Jakarta and then Quarantine in a hotel in that city”, reports Thomas Taatjes of Asia Pacific Superyachts in Bali. The Indonesian government has decided to reduce the mandatory quarantine period for international travellers, both Indonesian citizens and foreigners, from five to three days, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said. "This rule applies to international travellers who have met the requirements, including being fully vaccinated and negative for Covid-19 based on PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test results since their departures, after the arrivals in Indonesia, and at the end of the quarantine period," Xinhua quoted Hartarto explaining in a press release. Indonesia is proposing the establishment of a vaccinated travel lane (VTL) with Australia, said Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno. To date, visitors from 19 countries, including China, France, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates, have been allowed to travel to Bali, which is famous for its emerald rice terraces, Hindu temples and white-sand beaches. Indonesia is relaxing the rules even more for fully vaccinated people which includes those from yachts waiting to enter the country, reports Taatjes, noting, “For those arriving by sea, arrival may be at any international port. Visa applications are now ‘open’ and foreigners who apply for a Visa must have a full and completed vaccination against Covid-19 and must quarantine as stated above”. “We are standing by ready to share information and offer quality service to yachts interested in visiting this amazing country. We've also been successful in making special arrangements for a speedy entry for our clients once a visit to Indonesia is determined”. www.asia-pacific-superyachts.com/indonesia

Mark Horwood Classic blessed with perfect weather

A small fleet of seven boats and around fifty participants took to the water for a beautiful day's sailing in and around Phuket's Chalong Bay in early October. Organized by the Phuket Yacht Club, this inaugural power and sail rally was created in memory of the late PYC Commodore, Mark Horwood and all entry fees were donated to the 'One Phuket' charity foundation. Starting at midday a course was set starting from the Chalong Bay port channel marker to a buoy positioned adjacent to Mark's old, Latitude 8 boat-building workshop, and then on to the southern Island of Koh Bon, rounding to port and return. Fresh 12-17 knots winds saw all boats sailing quickly and completing the course in a shade under two hours. Glasses and ice-cold stubbies were raised in celebration of Mark's life and we all know he'd be very proud to be supporting such a worthy cause though the sport he dedicated so many years of his life too. Live music, a complimentary BBQ sponsored by Really Good Deli and a magnificent salad bar prepared by the PYC restaurant kept spirits high for participants and visitors on their return to the club. An auction of an antique, bronze speed-log followed raising an additional seven thousand baht, rounding off a really fun and successful day. In total, the club managed to raise THB22,000 for One Phuket. If you missed out but would like to donate please visit One Phuket through the link below: https://www.facebook.com/groups/onephuket/.

It’s a long way from

Norfolk

Hugh sailing on Mojo during the Bay Regatta.

H

ugh Thompson has led a very rewarding and exciting life and the spry 83-year-old shows no signs of letting up. His latest project is building a powercat with Matt McGrath using the outrigger hulls from the famed trimaran Adrenalin. But it all started in Norfolk, England, on 2 April 1938, when Hugh was born into a big family, which would grow to include four brothers and two sisters. He can remember the bombing in World War II as his family lived close to an RAF bomber station. The beginning part of Hugh’s life was spent in the UK and traveling the world with the Royal Air Force. The middle part of his life was primarily spent in northern Australia, at least when he was on land, and a great part of his latter life has been spent based in Ao Chalong, where he is a very recognizable figure in the Phuket yachting community. Hugh’s life has really been one big adventure, or misadventure, after another. In 1956, he crashed his first motorbike, a Douglas 350cc. Luckily, the UK has enacted a motorcycle helmet law six months previously, or you wouldn’t be reading this article as Hugh went ass over tea

kettle in the crash, split the motorcycle in half and landed on the car. He was lucky to survive. The experience turned Hugh off motorbikes so he ended up buying a 1938 Morris, which he later exchanged for 1935 Jaguar SS 100, which he later sold for 25 pounds to buy his wedding ring to marry his beloved Rose on March 15, 1958. In 1958, after doing a three-year apprenticeship as a bricklayer, Hugh joined compulsory national service in Britain, but had to sign as a regular as he could not support family on the national service wage. So he joined the airfield construction squadron of the Royal Air Force (RAF). From 1961 to early 1963 he had various detachments in the UK and was posted to the Middle East by return troop ship via the Suez Canal. Over the next couple years he saw duty in Yemen (where he was lucky to survive an ambush), Somalia, Kenya, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. In 1963, he spent time six months in Malaya, Borneo and Sarawak even spending six months living in a tent in northern Borneo and seeing active service in the Malay/Indonesia confrontation. From 1964-66, he was stationed in Singapore and his family joined him there. He

then left the service as a sergeant and returned home for a while, working a supervisor in a public works building. But in 1968, Hugh immigrated to Brisbane, Australia spending five weeks on the cruise liner MV Fairsky with his wife & two daughters (Maxine, born in 1958 & Toni born in 1963). The trip cost him 25 pounds and he says it was the best holiday he ever had. They traveled via the Canary Islands to Cape Town and then Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, before heading by train to Brisbane. Hugh jokes that at the time a tradesman with two daughters was a very valuable commodity Downunder. Ironically, he had applied to get a better job in

London as chief of clerks, and if that had come through before Australia accepted his family, he never would have made the trip. For the next six years he worked as a self-employed bricklayer in Brisbane and from 1974-76 he took a position as a Housing Managing at Wattie Creek NT, building houses and workshops for Aboriginal people. While there, he witnessed the historic land handover to the Gurindji people by Australian PM Gough Whitlam in 1975. He then took the family on a caravan trip around Australia before moving the family back to Brisbane from 1977-81 where he supervising domestic & commercials buildings. Funnily enough Hugh had never really done any sailing in the UK and didn’t get the urge to do until he moved to Australia. He saw a sailboat off the shore of Wynnum Manly and he thought he would like to sail,

so in 1981 he built his first sailing boat – a 22ft folding trailable trimaran without ever designing or building a boat before. How? Hugh says that if you have a skill in one trade it’s fairly easy to adapt to working in another. He then learned to sail gradually joining the Darwin Sailing Club (Captain Marty Rijurkis was the Sailing Manager there), entering club races and local regattas before starting to deliver boats and sail in international regattas. In 1985, he sold the boat and bought a 33ft sailing trimaran, Torpid Turtle, in NSW and sailed it to Darwin N.T. Over the next fifteen years, he continued to dabble in construction and do sub-contracting. He even bought and sold a takeaway restaurant, named Bon Appetite, in Darwin City Centre. From 1998-2000, he moved to Bali, working as a charter captain on a sailing cata-

maran, cruising the beautiful isles of Indonesia making trips to Timor, Sumba, Lombok, among other destinations. 1n 2003, he retired at age 65 and sold Torpid Turtle. Then he returned to Australia and from 2005-7, he build a 13.5m catamaran in Darwin named ROGUESHH (an anagram of Rose & Hugh) On 23 October 2007, Rose passed after a tough battle with cancer. They had been together for half a century and Hugh was devastated by the loss, He didn’t do anything for nearly a year-and-a-half. By he likes to quote, Franz Kafka, “Everything you love can be lost but love can return in another way.” So he says 24 October 2007 became the first day of the rest of his life. He sold his home in Nightcliff NT, where he had been living with Rose (‘too many memories”). In 2010, 72 years young, after building homes for many other people he finally starting building a house on his won on Dundee Downs, 120km south of Darwin, with his new partner Khun Nok on 50 acres of land. How Hugh and Nok got together was that a few years before Hugh and Rose had joined Bob Brindley, a friend of Hugh’s since 1994, and his then partner, Nok to sail on Excatriot, a 11m Pescott catamaran. Sadly both Bob and Rose soon passed from cancer and Hugh and Nok ended up as partners. Khun Nok knows her way around boats

and the sailing community having been a cook at the Ao Chalong Yacht Club and on many Phuket-based charter boats. She has accompanied Hugh on a number of deliveries and regattas. Andrew Stransky of Fantasia even said she one of the best crew he’s ever had work a foredeck. From 2010 until Covid kicked the couple would spend six months in Darwin, which he says has a climate similar to Thailand, and six months in Phuket. By the way, Hugh first came to Thailand in 1996 to participate in the King’s Cup regatta. In 2015 High bought a 6 m aluminum power cat and shipped it from Australia to Phuket, selling it the following year. In 2017, he bought a 29ft trailable trimaran in Phuket called Sahm Loy, and in 2018, he sailed Rogueshh, from Darwin to Phuket via Indonesia and Malaysia. He sold both boats in 2021 before commencing on his new project with Matt (The Adrenalin refit will be featured in an upcoming issue of SEA Yachting). Hugh has over 40 years and 60,000nm of club and ocean racing behind him, He has sailed the 600nm Darwin to Ambon Indonesia Yacht Race seven times as skipper & crew, twice on monohulls and five times on multihulls. He also sailed the 1,000nm Darwin to Bali Indonesia Yacht Race, as crew on a trimaran and monohull. He competed in the 310nm Brisbane to Gladstone on racing cats four times, and he

28

sailed the 600 NM Darwin to Saumlaki, Indonesia & return race. In 1995 he also did the 600nm Bali to Jarkarta yacht race. Closer to home, he sailed the Royal Langkawi International five times; the 240nm Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta four times; the Phuket King’s Cup eight times; the Top of The Gulf Regatta and the Koh Samui Regattas three times; and the Bay Regatta eight times. Throw in 40 years of club racing in Australia and Thailand and you’ve got a lot of sailing experience, a lot of stories and a lot of friendships.

Hugh has just done too many deliveries over the years to mention but he has Darwin to Phuket three times and Phuket to Hong Kong once. In 1990, he did have one hairy experience delivering a 42ft trimaran (Ocean Emu) from Darwin to Queensland as crew. The yacht capsized in the Gulf of Carpentaria,100nm offshore when the port float snapped and he was rescued by the Coast Guard and taken to Thursday Island-the boat was recovered later. Also, in 1987, he was delivering 33ft trimaran from Lake Macquarie NSW to Darwin and became shipwrecked on Wistari Reef, in Queensland at 3am in 20 knots of wind with no moon. He repaired the damage and continued his journey. These mishaps were all early in his delivery career. Hugh participated in the Bay Regatta this year on Mojo, he was the oldest competitor in the event but brought his sailing wisdom and levity was very evident on board for the four-day cruise around Phang Nga Bay. Hugh’s latest motto is “adventure before dementia”, but he is still sharp as a tack, and if you happen to catch him at the Phuket Yacht Club let him spin you a yarn or two, you won’t be bored. When you consider the amount of people that Hugh has met and crossed paths with in his life, whether it be in the construction business, the air force, or sailing, even just in everyday life, it’s phenomenal. “Been there, done that”, yes, but he’s still doing it. (Btw, Maxime, Hugh’s oldest daughter had a daughter and a son, Cara and Lee, and it was Cara, Hugh’s granddaughter, who prodded Hugh to tell his story. Cara, herself, has two children, Clint and Dylan (they are Hugh’s great grandkids). Toni, Hugh’s youngest daughter has one child named Reece.

MATT McGRATH on Hugh Thompson

Hugh Thompson & Matt McGrath at their workshop.

“I met Hugh and his wife Rose at the yacht club about 20 years ago. They would come to Phuket every year and Hugh would join in the regattas. And they both enjoyed socializing here. “Hugh had been sailing multihulls for decades by the time we met. So when he offered to come sailing on my catamaran I welcomed his experience. He raced with me several times on Typhoon and over the years we helped each other with our various boat projects. Whether it was launching them, fixing them or going for a cruise we always helped each other. Often these activities were followed by a beer and a yarn at the yacht club. “Hugh has a broad knowledge of building and mechanics through his experience in the air force, as a tradesman and as a sailor. That combination resulted in creating a great self sufficiency and also a witty and fun personality. Into his 70s, he was building a sailing catamaran as well as his new house in Darwin, mainly by himself, with his own hands. “When he offered to team up with me to build a power catamaran from the remains of Adrenalin, I didn't have to think about it. I knew he would make an excellent partner. Now in his 80s he hasn't slowed down at all, we hope to launch Adrenalin 2.0 around the New Year.”

Shipyard launches

the second Silent-Yachts 60

T

he Silent-Yachts 60 is an ongoing success-story for PMG Shipyard. The second yacht of the first production run of five was launched from the yard in Rayong, Thailand on Wednesday 27th October. The SY 60 represents the leading edge of electric propulsion and solar technology, and PMG Shipyard is at the forefront of development and production of this kind of yacht. Owned and managed by Swiss national Philippe Guénat, the yard has hired experts from literally all continents to be able to build high-end solar powered catamarans suitable for cruising the globe in a stylish, yet sustainable way. At the same time, traditional boat building values are being upheld by a staff of around 100 Thai boat builders, all of them skilled craftsmen with education and experience within their respective fields of work. And while the latest technology is being applied in areas like electronics and hull construction, traditional skills are utilised in other areas, like the beautiful teak deck on the SY 60 that was recently launched. At the yard with its 7 large production halls, 4 of them measuring a substantial 50 x 25 x 12 metres, you will also find separate workshops for carpentry, steel construction, upholstery etc., all of them equipped with high quality production tools, traditional woodworking tools as well as the latest style of modern production machinery. With the yard sitting directly on the beach, all yachts are being launched directly to the sea without any need for road transport. With the large port of Laem Chabang just a few sailing hours away, the location is ideal for shipping yachts worldwide. Even closer is the international yacht harbour Ocean Marina in Pattaya, which is used as a base for sea trails and customer events. While Silent-Yachts currently fills a large part of PMG Shipyard’s production capacity, the yard also promotes its own range of catamaran yachts, the Heliotrope yachts. That comes in addition to offering services like refitting, refurbishing and of course production of catamarans for other clients, custom builds or longer production series.

Fugazi captures

Phuket Raceweek highlighting three days of quality racing Photography P hotography by by Scott Scott Murray Murray

T

he Andaman Sea shone in all its glory upon the return of the award-winning Phuket Raceweek. After a one-year hiatus due to pandemic restrictions, organizers pulled out all the stops and worked with the Thai yachting community to showcase Phuket in all its world-class beauty to put on a successful three-day sailing event. With so much anxiety, frustration and misery ashore due to all the ongoing problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic it was exhilarating and therapeutic to get in three good days of sailing in near perfect sailing conditions. Driving awareness through its #PhuketSailing campaign, the organiser's were laser-focussed on delivering a safe event with lots of on water fun, during these challenging times. “We discussed holding the event with key members of the local sailing community and they were all keen to go ahead. We moved from

our traditional July slot to August to accommodate local needs and while we had to ensure all was in line with local authority rules and COVID measures, the event went off without a hitch and everyone who took part had a great time,” said Byron Jones, Managing Director of organisers Media Business Services Co. Ltd. Quick to support the 18th Raceweek was the Phuket Cruising Yacht Club, providing the headquarters for the event and the gathering point before and after sailing for all involved. Many other local businesses also supported Phuket Raceweek this year, all keen to showcase sailing and highlight that Phuket is ready and eager to welcome visitors again. “We have been overwhelmed by the number of local sponsors and supporters, who have stepped up to help us put on the event. It's certainly been a challenge but hearing all the positive feedback from the sailors and the island community, make it worthwhile,” added Jones.

Racing was held in the popular Chalong Bay from 27th to 29th August and 10 boats took part in three classes. Phuket’s best sailors signed up for the regatta, most ecstatic for the chance to escape the drudgery of the pandemic for a few days of fun and racing on the water. The seven-boat Multihull Racking Class had a couple of classes within classes as three of Alan Carwardine’s Stealths entered (Twister 2, Saffron & Fez) and two Fireflys (Twin Sharks & Voodoo) and competed against each other. Dan Fidock’s Sportsboat Fugazi, helmed by Mark Pescott, with its highly-skilled crew were poised for battle and always compete for top honours in any regatta they enter. Bonza, the trimaran owned by Mark Thorburrow and skippered by Warwick Downes, the former Commodore of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, drew oohs and aahs

throughout the regatta with its ability to claim line finishes and fly hulls as it whizzes by other competitors. Glywn & Karen Rowlands Stealth 12 Twister 2 competed against Dow Fidock’s Stealth 11.8 Saffron (builder Alan Carwardine skippering) and John Coffin’s Fez with Mick Coleman helming. The Stealths were built close to the start-line at the nearby Asia Catamaran boatyard in Ao Chalong. Also in the Multihull Racing class, John Newnham’s Twin Sharks and Jojo Tayong’s all-Filipino-crew on Voodoo continued their friendly rivalry as the two boats have dominated the Firefly class for the last few years and are never more than few boat lengths apart when it matters most. The monohull class had three entrees including Nils Degenklow’s X ¾ ton MK 2 yacht Phoenix. Nils has probably won more races in Phuket waters than almost any other

sailor so was the favourite heading in this class heading into the regatta. Paul Merry’s Night Train, a Hanse 415, and Java Yachting’s Mas Alegre, a Steadfast 40, were the other two boats in this class. Andrew McDermott had hoped to join the regatta with his boat Jessandra II and its predominately female crew but Covid restrictions prevented him from making it down from Hua Hin. Dan Fidock’s Sportsboat Fugazi, skipped masterfully by Mark Pescott had a tremendous performance on the water from the get go winning two races and securing a second-place finish on day one. Fugazi continued to do well on day two reaching speeds of up to 20 knots, as did Bonza, as the two boats sped through the course. Fugazi took first and second place finishes giving it a three-point advantage. Mark Pescott continued to do a superb job on day three helming Fugazi, as it edged out Warwick Downes Bonza to take the prestigious top spot in the OMR Sports Multiclass Division with Jason Corall’s Twin Sharks and Jojo Tayong’s all-Filipino-crew on Voodoo finishing in third and fourth spot respectively in the four-boat class..

Alan Carwardine turned in a masterful performance, winning all but one race skippering Saffron (formerly Java) to first place in the OMR Cruising Multihulls. Fez, skipped by Mick Coleman, took second spot while Glywn Rowlands Twister 2 finished third. This was the tightest class by far as the Stealths finished just seconds apart from each other in many of the races. Nils Degenklow’s Phoenix never lost a race in the regatta and in so doing added to its trophy case winning the IRC Monohull class. The crew on Java Yachting’s Mas Alegre had never sailed together before, but by the third day they were really getting it together and improving their standing, allowing them to tale second overall in the division. Paul Merry’s Night Train claimed third spot in the Multihull Class. New to Phuket Raceweek this year was a Pursuit Race – the first time such a race has been held during the regatta and possibly the first time in Thailand. Held on the second day, the entire fleet were set off according to their handicap (slowest boat first) and finished off Koh Larn in Chalong

Bay. Fugaziclaimed the honours in the Multihulls class while Phoenix came top in the Monohulls class. Another first this year saw hydrofoil kites and wing foils compete on the final day. Taking out the inaugural wins were Zayyar Wit in the Hydrofoil Kite class and Alejandro Vernis in the Wing Foil class. Dan and Dow Fidock made Raceweek history by being the owners of boats that won the regatta in two different classes: Fugazi in Multihull Racing and Saffron in Multihull Cruising. Dow has also recently taken over a couple of Lucky 13 franchises and graciously supplied the delicious sandwiches for the sailors and race officials every day. Rick Fielding read out the winners at a gathering at the Phuket Cruising Yacht Club after the regatta was over reminding all those in attendance that the final awards party will be staged at The Naiharn on Saturday November 13th. Speaking of the Phuket Cruising Yacht Club, Commodore Brent McInnes must be congratulated for providing a

wonderful onshore haven for all the sailors throughout the regatta. Simon James, as usual, did an exceptional job as PRO organizing the on-water management team. Matt McGrath kindly supplied and drove the photography boat. And a huge round of applause must go out to Byron and Rung Jones, the latter who acted as a foredeck maiden on Saffron throughout the regatta, as they successfully organized & staged a fantastic Phuket Raceweek 2021. Despite the challenges of putting on an event during a pandemic, the 2021 Phuket Raceweek will be remembered for three days of sailing in near perfect conditions, great camaraderie amongst the participants and a wonderful showcase of Phuket's hospitality and preparedness.
