The Explore Group Powers Ahead With Yanmar
B
risbane based Aluminium Marine is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most respected shipyards, designing and manufacturing aluminium catamarans for the passenger ferry and eco-tourism markets. Their latest launching is a 250 seat ferry, powered by a pair of 670kW Yanmar 6AYWGT commercial marine diesel engines. When the keel was laid for this vessel, Aluminium Marine did not have a signed customer for the hull. The New Zealand based Explore Group, a repeat Yanmar customer, quickly signed on with Aluminium Marine when they decided to expand their operations into the ferry market in NZ and required a new vessel on a short lead time to commence operations in Auckland before Christmas 2014. INCAT Crowther Designs and was based on the highly successful Spirit of Queenstown which was powered by the 478kW Yanmar 6HY-WET engine series, and now in operation for over 12 months. To meet Australian maritime regulations, the hull was being built to a length overall of 25m for a passenger load of 150 people. However, when the Explore Group signed on, the design parameters changed. New Zealand regulations permitted the hull to be longer and the passenger capacity was also increased to 250 people. As a result, the hull was lengthened in the aft area of the sponsons, providing a longer and well balanced hull design. The new boat was named Explore D6. According to Jack Louwerse, Project Manager and Engineer at Aluminium Marine, the Explore D6 is a very efficient hull design. “This hull is a ‘displaning’ design which is noted for an incredibly smooth ride and unsurpassed efficiency,” Jack Louwerse said. A ‘displaning’ hull shape combines the best attributes of a displacement and semi-planing hull. Displacement speeds offer low fuel consumption and longer range, while semi-planing hulls are noted for higher performance. A ‘displaning’ hull delivers both. “The vertical stems are more efficient than a raked entry as the vertical entry provides greater waterline length,” Jack Louwerse said. “The vertical stems also provide greater hull buoyancy for’ard.” Contributing significantly to the success of the Explore D6 is the choice of Yanmar 6AY-WGT engines, one mounted aft in each sponson. The power train incorporates Yanmar YXH-240 transmissions with a 2.27:1 reduction ratio, which feed the power via conventional shafts fitted with five blade counter-rotating props. The selection of the Yanmar 6AY-WGT engines was one jointly made by Aluminium Marine and the customer, the Explore Group. “The Yanmar 6AY-WGT is a very durable, powerful engine,” Jack Louwerse said. “As far as we are concerned as catamaran designers and builders, Yanmar is the only marine engine to specify as they are purpose designed for the marine environment. We looked over other brands and all we see are converted truck engines.” Gaining the approval from the Explore Group to install the Yanmar engines was a mere formality. With another vessel in their fleet recently repowered with the Yanmar 6AY-WGT engine, the customer has already had a fair indication of the strong performance, low fuel usage and high reliability that other ferry owners have come to enjoy from these purpose built heavy duty marine engines. The Yanmar 6AY-WGT is a six in-line cylinder engine with a displacement of 20.39 litres and a rated power output of 911 mhp (670kw) at 1,938 rpm. The versatile 6AY Series is extensively used in many applications including heavy displacement work boats but also in many high speed applications such as passenger ferries, patrol craft and cray fishing boats.

Sea trials of the Yanmar powered Explore D6 have delivered impressive performance data. At wide open throttle the engines rev to 1970 RPM with the vessel recording a top speed of 29 knots. This was achieved with full fuel tanks of 4000 litres and a simulated passenger load of 100 people. “This is a very slippery, efficient hull design” said Jack Louwerse.”The Explore D6 weighs in at 53 tonnes light ship, but with the addition of 250 passengers an additional 20 tonnes is added to the total weight. Fully loaded we expect the hull will still achieve 26 knots.” The Explore Group operates a fleet of ferries, charter vessels and former Americas Cup yachts across both the New Zealand and Australian markets. The confidence of the Explore Group in both Aluminium Marine and Yanmar is unquestioned.

Changing Regulations for Superyacht Owners
Superyachts in Phuket.
Thailand Tourism Minister Kobkarn is pushing hard to change regulations in Phuket and Thailand directly affecting Superyacht Owners. Asia Pacific Superyachts has been lobbying hard with the government of Thailand to get visas and yacht-charter regulation laws changed. A special task force has been formed to come up with viable suggestions for changes to visas and yacht-charter regulations to help boost marine tourism in Phuket, with a working deadline for rolling out the changes by 2016. ”The task force comprises officials from relevant government agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Immigration Bureau,” revealed Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, the Thai Minister for Tourism & Sports Tourism Minister, in an exclusive interview with the Phuket Gazette. “We are working together to come up with suggestions for changes to visas and other regulations that would be best for the country,” she said. ”This includes changes that will boost the chartering of foreignflagged superyachts in Thai waters.” Thai Tourism Minister Kobkarn “Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has pledged his full support for bureaucratic changes to help Wattanavrangkul (courtesy of boost marine tourism,” Ms Kobkarn added. ”Minister Prajin confirmed that he had met with PM Prayut, who Asia Superyacht Rendezvous). he said pledged his full support for improving all aspects of marine tourism, including yacht and superyacht charters.” Ms Kobkarn said she could not reveal any more details as any proposed changes had yet to be finalized. “This is an important issue, as any changes will affect different types of visas and businesses. We must also consider internal security and safety measures a top priority, but I will support the changes suggested because it means a lot for tourism,” she said. ”We hope to have new rules in place by the end of this year to help secure the island’s position as the top yachting destination in the region.” The move to overhaul the visas and laws regulating yacht charters follow a meeting with Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong and Gulu Lalvani, chairman of the Royal Phuket Marina, in January. At the meeting, Ms Kobkarn vowed to raise concerns voiced about crew visas and the chartering of foreign-flagged superyachts. “Changing the regulations in order to develop our tourism is a must in response to heightened competition from other yachting destinations in the region,” she said. ”It will take time for the suggested changes to be presented to the Cabinet and approved, but we are making good progress.” Among the changes to ramp up marine tourism in Phuket is the push for a multi-million-baht harbor expansion at the Deep Sea Port at Ao Makham, Ms Kobkarn added. ”Current regulations allow only one-year concessions to operate ports, but we are looking at what can be done to allow long-term concessions,” she said. “We are looking at becoming attractive hosts for yachts, cruise liners and superyachts – all for long-stay, not just short stays. “This is what we aim to do and I hope to have a clear picture set by the end of the year.” www.asia-pacific-superyachts.com

Early Bird entries are still open for the 2015 Multihull Solutions Regatta – Phuket (Photo Scott Murray)
Following the success of last year’s regatta, the 2015 Multihull Solutions Regatta – Phuket is shaping up to be one of the best events on this year’s cruising calendar. Now in its eighth year, the Multihull Solutions Regatta – Phuket will be held from 9-12 July and is expected to have at least 25 multihulls participating, including a world first with the inclusion of four brand new Corsair Pulse 600s. Multihull Solutions has renewed its major sponsorship of the event and is committed to remaining in partnership with organisers Ao Chalong Yacht Club for many years to come. The Early Bird Entry Fee offer has been extended until 15 June to allow more multihulls the opportunity to join this exciting event, which combines three days of exhilarating racing with a jam-packed social calendar. The regatta continues to be arguably the best value event of its kind in the southern hemisphere, with Early Bird entries costing only 3,500 Thai Baht per boat including skipper ($120 AUD) or 1,500 Thai Baht per crew member ($52 AUD). The professional organisation, affordable fees, spectacular scenery and exceptional hospitality make the Multihull Solutions Regatta – Phuket an appealing regatta for both local sailors and multihull enthusiasts from Australia and New Zealand who escape for a tropical winter break on the water. With very competitive airfares and accommodation in Thailand, the regatta is a superb way to experience the region and its breathtaking cruising grounds. Participating multihulls in the 2015 regatta will include a range of Fountaine Pajot catamarans, which continue to be Multihull Solutions’ most successful brand due to their superior performance, quality of construction and value for money. The Multihull Solutions Regatta – Phuket 2014 is open to all multihulls (catamarans and trimarans) with an overall length greater than six metres that are acceptable to the race committee. Private and charter multihulls are welcome to enter, and the regatta is expected to comprise the following classes: Racing Multihulls with valid OMR ratings; Firefly 850 Sports One Design Class; Cruising Multihulls without OMR ratings; and Classic Multihulls. Multihull Solutions Asia general manager Andrew de Bruin said the 2015 regatta is set to be a huge success. “We are thrilled to be onboard as a major sponsor for a second year, and are looking forward to working again with the ACYC to make the 2015 regatta one that sets a new benchmark for regional marine events,” Andrew said. Following Multihull Solutions’ success in Australia and New Zealand, the company officially expanded its operations to southeast Asia in early 2014 with its Thailand office based in Phuket’s Boat Lagoon. The company is the exclusive distributor of Fountaine Pajot and Catana Catamarans in southeast Asia and also represents TAG Yachts, NEEL Trimarans and Privilège Catamarans in the region. The Multihull Solutions Asian team works closely with the Australian and New Zealand teams to ensure new and existing clients are comprehensively serviced throughout the entire Australasian region. This network also expands the company’s pre-owned multihull brokerage, making it the largest in the Asia Pacific. SEAKEEPER INCREASES COMMITMENT TO ASIA-PACIFIC MARKET
Seakeeper continues to strengthen its worldwide sales and service support with its new facility in Raffles Marina in Singapore. The office will serve as a base for all company operations in Asia. “We’re taking a global approach to our business model,” said Phil Bourque, Seakeeper global account manager. “With sales and factory-direct support now in the region, and an expanding network of certified service and installation centers, we’re making a steadfast commitment to our customers in the Pacific Rim.” The Singapore facility rivals those in the West. Customers in Asia now have access to the full level of superior service that they’ve come to expect from the company. “This is a significant opportunity for Seakeeper; we have ambitious growth targets in the region,” said Andrew Semprevivo, Seakeeper VP of sales and marketing. “The business environment in Asia is global by nature, and we’re responding in a very tangible way.” Seakeeper recently launched its expanded line of five gyro models that provide stability to boats from 9–67m. The actively-controlled units reduce resonant roll by up to 90%. They draw minimal power, and are small, lightweight and virtually maintenance-free. Seakeepers have been installed on over 2,000 boats worldwide. Contact Seakeeper, 44425 Pecan Ct., Ste. 151, California, MD 20619. 410-326-1590. marketing@seakeeper.com, www.seakeeper.com.
SEAKEEPER LAUNCHES BATTERY-POWERED MODEL Seakeeper, the forward-thinking global leader in marine stabilization, has developed its first DC-powered gyro. Engineered for boats 9m–12m in length, the state-of-the-art Seakeeper 3DC reduces resonant roll by up to 95%, in a wide range of sea conditions. It is now possible to achieve a safe, stable and comfortable platform on the water, while underway or at rest, without the need for a generator. Based on the company’s widely-popular Seakeeper 5, the Seakeeper 3DC shares the same small footprint of 0.765m L x 0.757m W x 0.628m H and weight of 358kg. The unit has a modest electrical draw of between 500–1,000 watts, depending on sea state. Seakeeper is currently taking orders, with shipments beginning in June. Like all the company’s gyros, the leading-edge Seakeeper 3DC requires no speed-robbing external appendages and is virtually silent. It can be installed off centerline if needed, offering great flexibility for both new builds and refits. “At Seakeeper, we pride ourselves in listening to the demands of the market,” said Andrew Semprevivo, Seakeeper VP of sales and marketing. “We’re excited to launch the first DCpowered stabilization system for boats in this size class.” Over 2,400 Seakeepers gyros have been installed worldwide. The completely scalable technology stabilizes vessels from 9m to over 30m. MASTERVOLT’S VOLVO OCEAN RACE SYSTEMS –
THE ULTIMATE TEST CONFIRMS THE ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE
Photo by: Rick Tomlinson/Volvo Ocean Race
Performing flawlessly for a total of 250,000 nautical miles, and generating over 7,400kWh, the Mastervolt system does what it was supposed to do Just as Formula 1 racing leads to improved safety and efficiency for everyday motorists, so the grueling Volvo Ocean Race has given a raft of technical data to Mastervolt technicians to help them further refine electrical independence for boat owners. Some of the figures captured by the ongoing monitoring are truly impressive. Mastervolt, the world’s leading supplier of off-grid electrical systems, was chosen as the Official Electrical Supplier to the race, and fitted an identical electrical system into each of the 7 Open 65 racing boats. The company also ran comprehensive technical training for the crews, and manned a 24/7 remote diagnostic service whilst the race was underway, although this was barely required. By the end of the race, each of the boats will have drawn on their Mastervolt systems for around 40,000 nautical miles, with the combined fleet travelling the distance to the moon. The highly efficient, and light weight Mastervolt Lithium Ion Ultra batteries, were able to minimize the quantity of fuel and water to be carried, as each boat only needed to run its generator – a 75hp Volvo diesel driving the two Mastervolt high yield alternators – for 59 minutes every 24 hours. The performance and reliability of the Mastervolt system was mission critical, given no charging from renewable sources was available for backup.
Maximum efficiency
When the yachts finally secure in Gothenburg after 9 legs of intense racing, each Mastervolt alternator will have spun 88.2 million times during 21,000 minutes of operation. This will have generated a total of 88,400amps, which deep-cycled the Lithium Ion Ultra batteries around 275 times. The total energy generated by each yacht during the race will be around 1,100kWh. This is a testament to the extreme efficiency of each Mastervolt system, because this energy powered all the lights, the satellite communications and water maker for each crew of 9 athletes, but also supplied high draw items such as the radar and the amp-hungry canting keel. And there was enough energy left to charge up several iPods, phones and cameras!
Faultless operation
It is hard to imagine a more hostile environment for an electrical system, with constant vibration, hard knocks, salty spray and dripping condensation. Each component still gave reliable performance, with only a couple of very minor adjustments required to reach optimum functionality. One was a poor connection, easily remade, another was a sensor that needed resetting. Mastervolt deliberately made the systems as easy to operate and maintain as possible, as the crew would be more concerned with sailing the yacht than with pressing buttons. It was a policy that paid off, and which also led to some minor changes to future designs. Audible (continued on page 21)

International sailors flock to Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek
The Thai island of Phuket is preparing for an influx of visitors in July, as more than 500 sailors and spectators from around the world head to the Island to compete in the prestigious Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek 2015, set to take place the 15th to 19th of July off Phuket’s southeast coast. Now in its 12th year, Phuket Raceweek’s reputation overseas continues to grow as an increasing number of participants from all over the world fly in to take part and enjoy the beauty of Phuket’s Green Season. “We are very pleased to see more international participants taking part in Phuket Raceweek each year. There is a large local fleet of boats for charter in Phuket and nearby, and as word continues to spread about Phuket’s stunning sailing grounds and Phuket Raceweek, we expect to see continued growth in the number of overseas sailors taking part,” said Mr. Byron Jones, Managing Director of organisers Media Business Services Co. Ltd. (MBS). Equally important to overseas participants is the regatta shore venue and with the five-star Cape Panwa Hotel as title sponsor and host venue together with sister property Kantary Bay Hotel, Phuket Raceweek provides an idyllic beachfront venue and safe anchorage with onshore service second-tonone. “Cape Panwa Hotel is an excellent host of Phuket Raceweek. With direct beachfront access sailors can anchor metres off in safety and enjoy the Regatta Village and social activities which are in the hotel’s gardens. The service is fivestar, the parties are second-to-none and this has helped Raceweek win awards and set a new regatta standard,” added Jones. Further underscoring their commitment to Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek, this year will see Mr. Tirapongse Pangsrivongse, owner and CEO of the hotel’s owning group Cape & Kantary Hotels, competing on his newly acquired 12.8metre boat, Kantus’ Bride. “All of us at Cape Panwa Hotel are excited about Raceweek. It is truly a privilege to host such a prestigious event, and have an opportunity to meet such talented and
driven sailors from around the globe. We can only hope that all of our guests enjoy our numerous restaurants, our secluded beach that is calm year round, and the lively parties that will be held during this year’s regatta. I have a personal stake in this year’s regatta, as I will participate on board my own yacht. I look forward to a spirited race, and may the best crew win,” said Mr. Tirapongse Pangsrivongse. Phuket’s strategic central position and yachting hub status in Asia, combined with being home to some of the best sailing grounds in the world – and the idyllic host venue of Cape Panwa Hotel – prime the event for further growth. Often perceived as a niche sport, regattas in Thailand attract between 300 and 2,000 sailors and spectators to a destination for a week or longer, delivering revenue directly into the local economy through spend on accommodation, food and beverages, and entertainment. Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek is the opening event of the 2015/16 AsianYachting Grand Prix – a regional sailing championship that includes twelve of the best regattas in Asia. Organized by Media Business Services, the regatta consists of four days of world-class racing from 15th to 19th July off Phuket’s southeast coast. Using the data
Mastervolt’s technicians will now amass the data from each boat, and compile it all back at their Amsterdam headquarters. The results will help to drive the even greater efficiency of the next generation of alternators and batteries, and of the distribution systems required to eke-out every watt from a 59-minute charge cycle. However, unlike the Volvo racers, of course, everyday boat owners won’t be so restricted in their recharge cycle, and will have plenty of power to spare. Commenting on the impact of the race on future designs, Dennis de Beer, Team Leader Application Engineering for Mastervolt, said “The Volvo Ocean Race is the ultimate test of both man and machine. We were very proud to be the Official Supplier, but then our whole philosophy is to develop rugged systems that make the best use of every amp available. When one boat owner at an exhibition asked us if we had vibration-tested our installations, we were able to say they have had the ultimate shakedown – the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Southern Oceans. The data we have gained will help us advance the brand for both commercial and leisure applications. If our systems can shrug off the Volvo Ocean race, then they can handle anything.” For more information on the role of Mastervolt in the Volvo Ocean Race, please go to: www.poweredbymastervolt.com

erani Yachts has been based in Phuket Boat Lagoon for over 10 years and selling boats in Asia for 16 years. Managing director and o owner Hakan Lange originally set up Derani Yachts in Kuala Lumpur in 1999 and in 2004 when the Thai government removed the import duty on new boats the time was right to o move to Phuket. Hakan secured a deal with the Phuket Boat Lagoon to build a purpose made office overlooking the marina and moved in at the beginning of December of
that year. Derani Yachts has made a name for itself as a boutique boat dealer where the emphasis is on customer care and selling the client, not just a boat but the right boat. Derani Yachts has always chosen to represent brands that share their ideology and has a long-standing relationship with Selene Ocean Trawlers, a family-owned business that builds a range of the best long-distance full displacement trawlers currently available with a range of boats from 38-to-92 feet with plans for a luxurious 128-footer on the drawing board.

Derani Yachts is also the authorized dealer for the British boat builder Fairline, the only leading builder that is still wholly British-owned with a range of sport and flybridge cruisers from 38-to78 feet. The other two brands represented by Derani Yachts are Tiara Yachts and Pursuit boats, which are sister companies and entirely owned by the Slikkers family, who have a proud boat building heritage dating back to 1955 and are today one of the few privately-owned production boat building companies in the world.
Derani Yachts has recently added Fleming Yachts to their portfolio of new boats. These bespoke semi-displacement boats are widely regarded as the ultimate cruising yacht. Developed by Tony Fleming and first built is 1985 at the Tung Hwa boat yard in southern Taiwan, they continue to be built in that yard to this day with well over 300 Fleming Yachts currently cruising the world. Tony himself semiretired in 2005 and when hull number 1 of the then new model Fleming 65 was completed handed over the day-to-day operation of

Fleming Yachts to his management team which includes his nephew, Adi Shard; his daughter, Nicky Fleming; and new team member, Duncan Cowie. Tony decided to retain this fist Fleming 65 for himself and use her “to evaluate her design performance as a well-found cruising yacht as well as providing a test bed for new equipment”. Tony named his new boat Venture and his extensive and thorough test sail continues to this day with over 50,000 miles logged along the West Coast of North America from La Paz, Mexico to Juneau, Alaska, back down the coast to the Sea of Cortez, to the Galapagos Islands, through the Panama Canal, up the East Coast into the Hudson River, Erie Canal and the St. Lawrence Seaway. In 2015, Tony returned to Alaska and at the time of writing was 140 miles from Dutch Harbour,
home of the reality series “The Deadliest Catch”. In 2009 Tony also cruised an additional 10,000 miles in a second boat named Venture II. On her he cruised Sweden, Norway and Germany before heading to Southampton to get the boat ready for a cruise to Ireland then Scotland and on to Iceland via the Faroe Islands. He returned along the same route before putting the boat into the Southampton boat show where she was presented in as new condition after her extensive shakedown cruise! Today, Fleming build four different models and produce around 12 to 13 boats a year. The Fleming 55 model has been in production for the longest time and is a progression from their original 50 and then 53 foot models. range cruising. The boat has a range of 2,000 nautical miles at 8 knots, yet with her standard Twin Cummins QSC 500 hp common rail engines, she can attain a top speed of approximately 18 knots with a maximum sustained cruising speed of around 17 knots. Like all Flemings, her deep keel provides protection for the Seatorque anti-vibration drive running gear and stability in a following sea and is protected by a stainless steel shoe to prevent damage in the event of a grounding. The top of the keel is sealed, so even in the event of major damage, the integrity of the hull is not compromised. The Fleming 55 was first introduced in 1986, and since then there have been literally hundreds of improvements made while its legendary hull design remains essentially the same. In 2015 hull number 238 was laid up, making it one of the most successful

production yachts in history. On the 25th anniversary of the founding of the company, Fleming Yachts were proud to announce the introduction of the all-new Fleming 58. After extensive research and input from existing Fleming owners, the need was identified for a boat to bridge the gap between the existing 55 and the 65 foot models. While retaining the Fleming classic lines, the 58 is an entirely new boat designed from the keel up. The naval architects selected to assist the inhouse Fleming design team were Norman Wright and Sons in Brisbane, Australia. With their special expertise in hull design and tank testing they have been designing semidisplacement passage makers for more than 100 years. The latest 3D modelling and CAD software were employed during the design process and a 1/12 scale model was built and

sia’s top yachts came together at the Thai tropical island of Samui to battle it out for the 14th Samui Regatta honours – the curtain-closing event of the prestigious 2014/15 AsianYachting Grand Prix championship. Held 23rd to 30th May off Chaweng Beach, the Samui Regatta is made up of five days of racing with six nights of beachside parties. The high-calibre fleet featured many of Asia’s best; including Jelik (HKG), FreeFire (HKG), Oi! (AUS) and the former HiFi, Windsikher 2 (SIN), battling it out in IRC 0, while the Regatta welcomed back a Premier Class after a few years hiatus with El Coyote (AUS), Uranus (MAS) and the all-new Spirit 65 named Chloe Giselle (GBR) competing against each other.
32
The Samui Regatta was the final event of the 2014/ 15 Asian Yachting Grand Prix circuit.
New to the Asian circuit, Chloe Giselle was the first Spirit 65 out of the UK shipyard and shipped to Asia to compete in the regional circuit. Designed as a performance orientated sailing sloop that combines classic lines with the use of modern materials and construction technology, the Spirit 65’ will be one to watch and was on display at the recent Singapore Yacht Show. Hong Kong and Singapore entries dominated the “40-footer” class including EFG Mandrake (HKG), Siren (HKG), Blue Note (SIN), Foxy Lady VI (SIN), Fujin (AUS) and Jessandra II (RQ), all competing for IRC 1 honours, while in IRC 2 Samui-based Moon Shadow (THA) duked it out with Windstar (THA) and Sail Quest’s Paprika (THA). Looking to defend their 2013/14 AsianYachting Grand Prix Skipper and Yacht of the Year crowns was Bill Bremner and his Foxy Lady VI. Baring a below par regatta, Foxy Lady VI looked difficult to beat for “Yacht of the Year” while Bill Bremner, not at the helm of Foxy Lady VI during the recent Top of the Gulf Regatta, could still mathematically take the “Skipper of the Year” crown though he would need to outscore the Nick Burns/ Fred Kinmonth combination on EFG Mandrake. Organizers brought back the midweek party, which was held at the KC Beach Club on Wednesday 27th May, allowing the sailors to let off some steam and relax the
following day, which was the Reserve Day. On-the-beach prize-presentations take place each day after racing while the official Opening Party was as usual at Zico’s Brazilian Restaurant & Bar on Sunday 24th May, while the final party, prize-presentations and Gala Dinner, hosted by Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui, was held on the resort’s lawns under the stars on Saturday 30th May. “For some, the onshore part of the Regatta is almost as important as what happens on-the-water and this year the local support from Samui businesses has been overwhelming. A number of new resorts offered their support, we welcomed back many long-term supporters and were excited to be working with Nikki Beach again. The Regatta has really become a true community event. Making the sailors stay refreshed, we will be serving Mount Gay Rum, Finca de Malpica wine and Asahi beer, and for the first time there will be Samui Regatta Signature Cocktails at the parties,” said organizer Simon James of Regattas Asia. Results in IRC One would determine the winner of the 2014/15 AsianYachting Grand Prix “Skipper” and “Yacht of the Year” as entering the regatta Nick Burns/ Fred Kinmonth (EFG Mandrake) and Bill Bremner (Foxy Lady VI) were chasing current “Skipper of the Year” leader Paul Winklemann, who was absent from the Samui Regatta this year.

Final Day warp-up from Captain Marty (http://asianyachting.com/) Once again, the race committee had to contend with light, variable wind and glassy patches before they could safely lay the course and get racing underway. To keep themselves amused, some crews tried wake-boarding behind the boat or swinging around from the main halyard before taking a dip. Eventually the Easterly strengthened to a steady 5 knots and everyone swung into action before it faded for the final showdown. The likelihood that there would only be one race, was on everyone’s mind and the top contenders were ready and willing to give their best shot at the title. Despite starting in the second row and looking dead and buried, Sarab Singh’s Windsikher II slowly worked their way back into contention, overtaking Sam Chan’s FreeFire and closing in on Peter Ahern’s Oi! at the finish line, to win the final race and seal overall victory in the IRC 0 Class. Peter Ahern’s Oi! led the class, halfway through the regatta but yielded to Windsikher II over the last two races and had to settle for second overall. A few silly mistakes onboard Sam Chan’s TP52 FreeFire, and lacking light air speed, left them in third overall. Despite several new keels to optimize boat speed, Frank
Pong’s Jelik also suffered in the light wind and found themselves in unfamiliar territory, amongst the TP52s at the top mark, but gybed away to give them clear air and regain line honours though they were reduced to fourth place and third overall when the handicap was factored in. The IRC 1 Class also experienced changes since the beginning of the regatta due to the light wind. The Malaysian Armed Forces DK47 Uranus skippered by Norhafisam claimed line honours and looked set for the handicap honours but on both occasions settled for second place. Roland Dane’s Corby 3 6 Jessandra II started the regatta in fine style but a Day 2 catastrophe saw them hand over the lead to Bill Bremner’s Foxy Lady 6. Since then they fought back to within one point of the leaders and on the final day their mission was completed by winning the race and going on to win the overall title. By slotting into third place David Dimmock’s Dubois 40 Blue Note provided the needed separation for Jessandra II to take the title and reduce Bill Bremner’s Foxy Lady 6 to fourth and Blue Note ended up in second overall. A bad day for Nick Burns/Fred Kinmonth’s EFG Mandrake saw them finish in fifth place and reduced to third overall in the standings. Bill Bremner and Foxy Lady 6 repeated as the 2014-15 AYGP Skipper and Yacht of

the Year. This is the first time since the allinclusive class era was introduced, that someone has defended the title. Winning four regattas and two second places is what earned them the title and Samui Regatta Scoreboard respect from their competitors. Another win for Bryan IRC Zero: Coianiz’s Sayer 1) Windsikher II, Sarab Singh (13pts) 1 3 Siren elevated them to 2) Oi!, Ahern/ Bailey/ Wilmer (16pts) second overall in the combined 3) Jelik, Frank Pong (21 pts) IRC 2 Class. Second place for Patinyakorn “Ging” Buranrom’s IRC One: 1) Jessandra II, Roland Dane (15pts) S&S 42 Windstar put them 2) Foxy Lady VI, Bill Bremner (17pts) back on the podium in third 3) EFG Mandrake, Nick Burns/ Fred Kinmonth spot. Notching up four wins at (19pts) the start of the regatta kept Gary Baguley’s Holman Pye IRC Two (IRC): 5 2 El Coyote on top 1) El Coyote, Gary Baguley (8pts) throughout the event. 2) Siren, Bryan Coianiz (14pts) 3) Windstar, Patinyakorn Buranrom (14pts) With five wins on the board, Patinyakorn “Ging” IRC Two (NHC): Buranrom’s S&S 42 1) Windstar, Patinyakorn Buranrom (7pts) Windstar topped the IRC 2 2) Moon Shadow, Mick Grover (10pts) (NHC) Class, with Mick 3) Sail Quest Paprika, Tim McMahon (19pts) Grover’s Samui-based Elliot 7 Moon Shadow’s two Premier (NHC): 1) El Coyote, Gary Baguley (9pts) wins allowing them to secure 2) Siren, Bryan Coianiz (10pts) second overall. More wind was 3) Chloe Giselle, Michael Hough (14pts) needed if Captain Tim McMahon’s Sail Quest’s Paprika is to do better than third place.
Under the National Handicap for Cruisers (NHC) system, Gary Baguley’s Holman Pye 52 El Coyote held the lead in the Premier Cruising Class since the beginning. After notching up three wins Bryan Coianiz’s Sayer 13 Siren trailed the leader by one point and secured second overall. Michael Hough’s modern classic Spirit 65 Chloe Giselle was admired all week and came third overall after missing one day with a ripped sail. Despite the light-air ending, the high standards set both on and off the water were maintained throughout. The “Around Samui Island” race was put back in the race cupboard for another year. The IRC racing classes fought a close battle, with the final results decided on the last race, on the last day. It doesn’t get much better than that. The Presentation of the 2014-15 AYGP ”Skipper” and “Yacht of the Year” title and awarding the winner with the perpetual AYGP Cup filled with champagne and the embroidered Trend Fashions navy blue blazer to take home, is one of the highlights of this regatta. The 300+ sailors celebrated a great week of sailing in Samui at the closing party and Gala Dinner hosted by Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui.

arlier this year Bakri Cono decided it needed more space, so it moved to larger premises. Its new home is at PMG Marine, Thailand’s largest o shipyard complex measuring over 20,000sqm. The yard has been rigourously renovated, improved and extended and now has six individual production units, ranging from 1,200 to 1,250sqm in size and 12 metres high. All units have individual water and power supplies, ooffice space, bathrooms, storage facilities and direct access to the sea. German Lloyd Standards, which allows yachts to be built “In Class”. There is also the possibility of obtaining B.O.I. Tax exemption privileges. A fresh water trial basin of 24x11m is located on site to conduct 95% of the regular sea trials and waterproofing tests (for yachts up to 80’) without bringing salt water and mud onto the newly constructed yacht. A wide launching ramp provides easy access to the waterfront. The beach area in front of the yard measures 4,000sqm. There are several independent workshops, including an upholstery facility and conference rooms, separate air-conditioned storage for chemical products and administrative facilities are available on a space sharing” basis. Specialized sectors include a carpentry “teak section”; a stainless steel and welding section; & a section where the Bisphenol A-Type Epoxy Vinyl Ester Resin “Fusion” Technique is applied. The site is well protected: it is not only gated but also has 24-hour security and the shipyard has a strong environmental commitment: rainwater is collected, filtered and recycled for use in the shipyard. Soon, solar energy will be used for part of the daily power needs. Looks also matter and - quite unusual for a factory site – trees, a flourishing garden and welltended, immaculate grounds surround the yard. The Heliotrope PMG Marine Complex is strategically located on the Eastern Seaboard of the Gulf of Thailand, one kilometer from the commercial deep sea of Mat Ta Put, facilitating overseas export. Bangkok Airport is a 2-½ hour drive and the International Airport of U-Tapao a half-hour car ride away. Furthermore, the yard will be close to the train station of the soon to be constructed Bullet Train scheduled to run from Bangkok to Rayong. Several production units are still available for a long-lease period. For more information, interested individuals and parties are invited to contact Bakri Cono and/or Northrop & Johnson.

he design of H48 was developed by the Albatross Marine Design team in close cooperation with the Bakri Cono Shipyard with feedback from European and Asian brokers. We tried to fit into the market niche below 50' where the craft would still be affordable as a family boat, but could also be used as corporate vessel. In terms of styling, the H48 was designed for those who want to stand out and be seen in the marina, but with high degree of practicality, thus attracting both “exposure” and “practical” clients. The powercat market trend in Europe is more about “platforms to carry furniture” though many Australian powercats are more performance oriented, but Spartan. We tried to straddle these two extremes, stressing performance and seakeeping together with ergonomics and comfort. We also provided allowance to carry additional weight - it is wellknown that many owners order options to build and add extra equipment, tanks, etc., during the service life of the boat. Of special concern to us was the exterior styling and interior ergonomics: we were not
looking at squeezing and adding the maximum number of bunks and bathrooms. The flybridge and saloon on the new H48 are spacious and great for indoor/outdoor picnics and barbeques with the usable area much bigger than any known comparable boat of its size. The hull shape of the H48 is the quintessence of AMD’s experience with the catamaran providing a soft ride and fuel efficiency in a wide range of semi-planing speeds. CFD (computational fluid dynamics) codes were applied to optimize the hull shape. Seakeeping was a primary concern and vertical accelerations were reduced by 30-50% compared to monohull craft of comparable size. For the structure, its high-tech sandwich laminate with the use of FEA (finite element analysis) methods, which allowed us to detect stress-concentration hard spots and add extra reinforcement where necessary. The structure was specially designed with the vacuum infusion method - all components of the composites were carefully controlled to obtain the highest strength and the lightest laminate. www.amdesign.co.th

Industry Conferences at SYS Strengthen Foundations for Region’s Growth The Singapore Yacht Show played host to two conferences this year: the 7th Asia Pacific Yachting Conference (APYC) and the inaugural Asia Boating Forum (ABF).
Asia Pacific Yachting Conference Having grown a strong reputation over the past five years, the line-up of speakers at this year’s APYC was one of the most insightful yet, with discussions and presentations on both regional and global issues from a perspective of ”Towards World Class”. The superyacht industry in Asia may now finally get the breakthrough it has long waited for. Senior officials from the governments of Thailand and Indonesia outlined initiatives being taken to ensure a warm welcome to superyachts coming East for the winter season, including the creation of the necessary policy framework that will facilitate yacht charter in the region. Since inception in 2009, the Asia Pacific Yachting Conference (APYC), has developed into the only regional industry platform for the leisure marine professionals from the Asia Pacific region and beyond. In partnership with MTU, this year’s APYC addressed the issues, challenges and opportunities of a dynamic region that is making waves on the world stage. Co-chaired by Martin Redmayne (The Superyacht Group) and Tim Coventry (special advisor to the Gyeonggi Provincial Government, Korea), industry and business leaders shared their journeys to achieving world-class performance in their respective fields. There was technical and case study presentations, as well as panel discussions about strategies, best practices and the future of yachting in the Asia Pacific, providing delegates the knowledge to ensure they capitalize on the developing markets in Asia and overall regional growth. New for 2015, the APYC was pleased to announce a collaboration with the British Marine Federation (BMF) to showcase UK companies at the Conference, providing BMF members with the unique opportunity to meet potential distributors and buyers from the region.
instantly recognizable as the big sister of the Spirit 54’, which featured as James Bond’s yacht of choice in the film Casino Royale. Synonymous with style, performance and innovation, Wally has been creating show-stopping yachts for over 20 years. A spacious sports cruiser that blends practicality with indulgence, the Wally 47 cuts through waves like a performance speed boat while the teak decks and carbon-fibre components offer the finishing of a sleek, modern superyacht. Mike Simpson, Managing Director of Simpson Marine asserted: “Despite terrible weather, the serious buyers were not deterred and came out in full force. We could not have asked for better results and we continue to see year-on-year growth at the Show. The buyers came from across the region, including Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand, this clearly demonstrates the Show’s importance and reach in Asia.” Other highlights of the Show included the attendance of the Oceanco-built, M/Y Anastasia, a 75.5-metre superyacht - the largest yacht ever displayed in Asia. Built by worldrenowned shipyard Oceanco, she has won a number of prestigious awards including the World Yacht Trophy for Best of the Best Custom Motor Yacht over 40m. This former mini-cruise ship recently completed an extensive refit that has transformed her into a unique and highly stylish floating beach house with very low fuel consumption. Her 32 crew take care of up to 32 guests, accommodated in two masters, seven VIPs and seven deluxe cabins, spread over 1,650sqm of guest space across five decks. An ever-present supporter of the Show, Northrop & Johnson Asia had an impressive line-up of six yachts this year, including the 51.8m M/Y Jade 959. Accommodating up to 12 guests, her outdoor cinema with karaoke system and abundance of watersports options make her the perfect family charter yacht for the adventurous at heart. N & J Asia also displayed two beautiful sailing yachts, the 28m Sparkman & Stephens ketch S/Y Letizia and the 34m custom-built Ocean Runner. And Northrop also showcased the groundbreaking Heliotrope 65, the first solarassisted luxury catamaran yacht. Fraser Yachts returned with two exciting yachts: the 51m M/Y Aldabra and the 34m M/Y Azul A. The striking M/ Y Aldabra, which was co-presented by Edmiston & Company, features a sophisticated and sporty exterior design with a beautiful, light interior. Six guest cabins sleep up to 12 guests and the full-width owner’s suite
features a dropdown balcony. Combining relaxed luxury with ocean-going capabilities, M/Y Azul A has recently undergone a major refit, and now accommodates up to eight guests in four cabins in real style, with a crew of six to provide for guests’ every possible need. The ideal cruising yacht, her 2.3m draft enables her to reach those beautiful shallow spots inaccessible for some yachts of this size, and her modern stabilization system means that guests can cruise in ultimate comfort. As one of the first worldwide yachting brands to invest in the Asian market, Gulf Craft continues to use Singapore as its platform of choice to present its everexpanding range of yachts to the region. This year, Gulf Craft showcased a number of larger yachts, the highlight of which was the regional debut of the Majesty 105. Asia Boating Forum Held over the course of the morning, the inaugural ABF themed the “Essentials of Emerging Markets of Asia” - was a region-wide review of the Asian markets. Panel sessions followed on the business of boating, infrastructure and services, marine policy development and both financial and asset management structures. Recognizing that Asian markets are at varying stages of maturity, with countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong placed further up the development ladder and with others still in an embryonic stage, the ABF links decision makers and key players in the region, enabling them to share experiences and discuss the best ways to develop boating in the region. Though each country has its own policies, regulations and practices relating to boating, based on its own needs and circumstances, there is much commonality and lessons to be learnt and shared. For boating to grow regionally, all countries have to level up and develop best practice. The Asia Boating Forum is a platform for just that – getting the foundation and policy framework right for growing the boating industry.
to give maximum volume, versatility and comfort, the 5.5m Sports Limousine provides guests the flexibility for use in multiple situations: transportation, fishing, diving, water skiing and more. This three-person underwater vehicle can carry passengers to a depth of 1,000m in a fully air-conditioned and spacious interior. Providing an unobstructed 360-degree view under the sea in unparalleled comfort and maneuverability, this really is the ultimate toy. The Show ended on a high note at the Exhibitors’ and Sponsors’ Closing Party, held on all three floors of ONE°15 Marina Club’s Iconic Tower with a celebratory glass of Perrier-Jouët champagne.

T
he Top of the Gulf Regatta (ToG) has grown to become the largest multi-class regatta in Asia welcoming over 250 boats and more than 700 sailors and friends to Pattaya each year. The ToG Regatta attracts sailors from over 30 nationalities and is also a strong supporter of grass roots sailing with over 100 young Thai sailors competing each year at the event, providing them with an opportunity for international competition. Sailors compete for three perennial trophies: the Top of the Gulf Regatta trophy, the prestigious Coronation Cup (competed for by the one-design Platu class), and the Thailand Optimist National Championships, which combined make the awardwinning Top of the Gulf Regatta one of the most diverse class line-ups in the region. The Coronation Cup, established to celebrate the Coronation Date of His Majesty the King of Thailand (5th May) – who himself is a proficient sailor winning the gold-medal at the 1967 SEA Games – saw a near-record line-up with crews from as far away as the UK taking part. “The Coronation Cup is an integral part of the Top of the Gulf Regatta and has grown to become the largest one-design racing competition in the region. This year’s fleet includes some top sailors – both regular competitors and new faces. It was a multi-national fleet with Australians the biggest contingent,” said Bill Gasson, co-Chairman of the Top of the Gulf Regatta Organizing Committee. Dominated by Thai sailors, including many from the national team, the dinghy and beach catamaran fleets saw Thai competitors pitted against a strong team from Malaysia as well as sailors from Singapore, Hong Kong and beyond. The Thailand Optimist National Championship is the pinnacle of competitive youth sailing in Thailand. The second oldest sailing trophy in the Kingdom, the championship is celebrating its 40th year and has a special place in the hearts of Thai sailors. The championship is raced over three days off Ocean Marina Yacht Club with a maximum of nine races making up the series.

This year’s regatta will go down as one of the toughest yet. Not only were there top international crews and close racing on-the-water, the conditions proved to be some of the most varied, tricky and challenging in the Regatta’s history. Out on the course on the final day, Principal Race Officer Denis Thompson AP’d waited for the wind to fill in and by late morning there was a moderate breeze, enough to get the fleet into sequence. Two races was the plan, and it was delivered for the IRC, one-design Platu and multihull classes, with one longer race preferred for the Cruising class. After a slow start to the 2015 series, Kingdom Property (AUS) rallied to put in a string of five wins and take a commanding position at the top heading into the final day. With two races planned for the final day, a first in Race 1 secured the title for Scott Duncanson and his crew one race early – the first time ever that the title has been defended successfully and the fourth time in total that Scott has won the Coronation Cup. With Kingdom Property not competing in the final race of the series, the minor places were still to be decided and Chris Way and his crew on Easy Tiger IV (AUS) returned to their winning ways to take the final race of the series (adding to their win in the first race of the series) and secure second place overall, three points ahead of Ben Williams’ The Fox (HKG). After leading the Platu class at the end of the first day, the Thai team on Le vent 2 struggled in the lighter winds and fell off the pace to finish fifth overall, while the all-Thai female crew – soon heading to the SEA Games in Singapore – on the Platu YRAT, were sailing light with just four crew, and despite the weight disadvantage in the stiffer breeze they managed a commendable ninth out of 13 overall. In IRC Racing 1, there has been some close competition, disappointing performances by some sailors and one DQ. It was enough to keep everyone on their toes and nothing was certain with the final two races’ performances set to decide the final standings. Fully aware of this, it was EFG Mandrake (HKG) fastest out of the blocks to score line honours and the handicap win in Race 1, ahead of Foxy Lady VI (SIN). Wan Ma Rang (THA), however, got caught out on the first downwind leg of the windward/ leeward course and slipped down the scoreboard to finish last in the race. It wasn’t enough to knock them off the podium, however, as they secured third place by a single point margin, while at the top a win in the final race saw Foxy Lady VI, lead by Steve McConaghy, defend their class title and EFG Mandrake – first time competing at the Regatta – finish in second. A little over 20 seconds separated first and

second places in the final day’s first race for IRC Racing 2 with Amanda (SWE), who struggled with the third day’s shifty winds, edging out Iolanthe (AUS) and El Coyote (AUS) on a late surge with a solid third place. A disappointing sixth place in the final race for Amanda – their worse on the scoreboard – meant they fell off the top spot and finished second overall. A first for Iolanthe saw them take advantage of Amanda’s slip-up to win the title by two points with El Coyote finishing third overall. Being scored with the NHC performance handicap system, the Cruising Class was a closely fought battle between the Japanese crew on Tai Two (JPN) and the USA team on Nautical Wheeler, and it wash Tai Two who won the title by 0.4 points from Nautical Wheeler with George Foose and his Dream team (USA), scoring a first in the last race, sneaking into third overall. In 2014, the Ocean Multihull class went down to the wire and a three-boat shoot-out for the final race. However, Sonic (THA), after hearing over the radio the final race was not to happen, turned it off and headed back to the marina, missing the next radio call which rescinded the first. Re-capping that moment before heading out this morning Kirati Assakul said “I won’t turn off my radio this time until I am back onshore after the racing has finished, and I’m in Bangkok!” That proved to be a very wise decision as Sonic won the first race of the day by just three seconds to level the series with Cedar Swan (THA) with the final race set to decide the title. The longer second race for the Ocean Multihulls, however, favoured the handicap of the smaller Cedar Swan who was the runaway winner by almost 8 minutes on corrected time, and with that won the class title by a single point over Sonic and License to Chill (AUS) in third. The regatta is hosted by the Ocean Marina Yacht Club, and in-line with the growth of marine leisure tourism, sports tourism and the Regatta in general, the marina has seen multi-million US dollar investment and expansion in recent years to make it now the largest marina in South East Asia, and the host for many national and international sporting events each year. Austhai Marine launches AT1500 Samui power catamaran
F
ollowing the success of Austhai Marine’s AT1500 series catamarans already operating in Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries, Austhai Marine recently launched the first of its new long awaited AT1500 Samui catamarans. The boat is a variation of Austhai Marine’s successful AT1500 series catamarans designed by Dr Albert Nazarov from Albatross Marine Design and based on the same fuel efficient hull form. The project was started in 2014, driven by the changing needs of the local Thai market for a boat that is somewhat more elegant, but yet
retains the robust functionality that is expected of commercially operating vessels. The selection of layout, materials and onboard systems were all carefully thought through in order to withstand daily commercial use and keep the level of maintenance required by the operator and crew to a minimum. In order to meet the specific operating requirements of the first AT1500 Samui, Austhai Marine has installed a high power MPPT solar charging system which will keep the batteries charged even during overcast days. Such a system will pay for itself over time as a proportion of the energy
62
required to charge the batteries is provided by solar panels instead of only the engine alternators doing all the charging, thereby resulting in fuel savings over the long term. Another notable technical feature on the AT1500 Samui is the balanced hydraulic steering system, which makes the steering wheel extremely easy to turn, without the need for costly and maintenance prone power hydraulics. The AT1500 Samui has been designed with flexibility in mind and is available in several different layout configurations including diving and charter versions with several customization options available. The boat features a spacious saloon and galley area that is able to cater comfortably to a large number of guests. The addition of a bowseating area creates a very “open” feeling when standing inside the saloon and adds to the overall feeling of comfort experienced onboard. Having two bathrooms, which are far more spacious than one would expect on a vessel of equivalent size, allows guests to easily change into and out of their wetsuits if the boat is to be operated as a dive boat. A large composite roof structure provides shelter from the sun for those seated in the AFT
deck seating area and also doubles as a very large sunbathing platform for guests on the flybridge who prefer to relax in the sun. The stability offered by the catamaran hulls drastically enhances the level of comfort experienced by those onboard and opens up many options for the operator to offer additional value added and/or complimentary services while underway. The market for operating boats in holiday destinations such as Thailand is becoming increasingly competitive as guests are increasingly making use of social media platforms such as TripAdvisor to rate their experience and new customers often base their buying decision on
reviews posted by others on these online platforms. The AT1500 Samui is designed to keep up with these changing market needs for a more value oriented experience. Both the owner and Austhai Marine were very satisfied with the performance of the AT1500 Samui during sea trials, which met or exceeded the design specifications. The highly efficient AT1500 hull form propelled by twin Yanmar 440HP inboard diesel shaft drives managed to achieve a maximum speed of 26.5 knots during sea trials with exceptional fuel economy. Sea trials were successfully completed on the 13th of May and the boat was then handed over to its owner, Calypso Diving, who sailed the boat from Ocean Marina Yacht Club to Koh Samui the following day. Calypso Diving, based on Koh Samui, is one of Austhai Marine’s many longstanding repeat customers and the new AT1500 Samui is the second AT1500 series catamaran delivered to the company within the past 12 months. Overall, the AT1500 Samui represents the fourth boat that Austhai Marine has built for this company. Austhai Marine currently has another AT1500 Samui under construction that will be launched in the near future. Updates and pictures will be posted on the company’s Facebook page. http://austhaimarine.com/ https://www.facebook.com/austhaimarine
