2017 Top of the Gulf Regatta open for entries Growing the charter fleet

In addition to catering to the current fleets, organizers see a growing trend of international sailors wishing to charter boats for the regatta. Targeting key sailing populations in the Australasian region and working with charter operators, organizers have created a charter section on the event website that promotes charter boats available for the regatta (http:// topofthegulfregatta.com/charters). “There are many sailors around the region and especially in Australia that are interested to race at the regatta if suitable boats are available for charter. Recognizing this, we have developed a dedicated charter section on the regatta website and are working with charter operators to market a selection of boats from dinghies up to IRC class and multihulls,” added Gasson. Boats such as Baby Tonga (Beneteau First 53), Resolution of Whitby (Beneteau 523 Oceanis), PH Plus+ (Elliot 46) and the famous Cassidy 55 Australian Maid, as well as Platus and a selection of multihulls and dinghies, are available for charter.

2017 Classes

Three IRC classes are planned, as well as the option for a “Class 0” for TP52 and similar type yachts. These will be complemented by a Cruising class, the popular one-design Platu class who will be competing for the prestigious Coronation Cup, and an Ocean Multihulls class. The dinghy fleet will be split into two classes – SingleHanded Monohull Dinghy and Double-Handed Monohull Dinghy, with further divisional splits possible – and there are options for beach catamaran classes also. Sailors in the Optimist class will be competing for the Thailand Optimist National Championships – Thailand’s top junior sailing competition – which is expected to see a fleet of 150+ youth sailors from around the world competing this year. Returning for the second year will be the IOM Class RC Yachts – a class of radio-controlled yachts which will race just outside the marina and is proving to be a popular class across the region. The 2017 Notice of Race is online at http:// topofthegulfregatta.com/notice-of-race and boats can enter at http://topofthegulfregatta.com/entry.

The 13th edition of the multi award-winning Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina is open for entries. To be held 4th to 8th May, 2017 at South East Asia’s largest marina, Ocean Marina, Top of the Gulf Regatta regularly attracts more than 250 boats and since opening for entries late last year organizers have received strong interest and early signups. “We opened for entries in mid-December last year and have had a lot of early enquiries for the 2017 Top of the Gulf Regatta. Already the one-design Platu class has 11 confirmed teams with crew coming from more than 10 countries, and we’re expecting a larger-than-normal dinghy fleet this year due to the Thailand Optimist National Championships being the last junior sailing event before the Optimist World Championships in July at Royal Varuna Yacht Club,” said Mr. William Gasson, Co-Chairman, Top of the Gulf Regatta Organizing Committee. “In addition to the IRC, Cruising and multihull classes, we have also introduced an option for the regional TP52 fleet and similar type boats to have their own dedicated class and courses,” added Gasson.

Yanmar Chosen for Trawler’s Two Repowers – 200,000 Hours Apart

The Petuna Endeavour is a commercial deep sea fishing trawler, a vessel with a long and proud history. Repowered with a Yanmar just four years into her life, some 30 years later the Petuna Endeavour was again repowered with the Yanmar. Petuna Endeavour was built in Launceston in 1979. The original engine installed into the 23.8m, 190 tonne trawler was a classic English brand which proved to be inappropriate for heavy marine use. With just four years of fishing behind her, the heavy sea going trawler was repowered in 1984 with a Yanmar S165 marine diesel engine. This was a slow revving 1250 rpm, six cylinder engine which delivered 550hp with masses of torque. Powered by the Yanmar S165, Petuna Endeavour pressed on for decades of reliable service. Today, Petuna Endeavour operates in the southeast of Australia, with between 2-3 months a year in Queensland waters. In 1995 Petuna Endeavour was converted into an auto liner, one of only two such equipped vessels in Australia. With the Mustad auto bait hooking system capable of setting 15,000 hooks a day, the capability of this long liner is second to none. Petuna Endeavour fishes mostly for Pink Ling and Blue Eye Trevally with 80% of the catch destined for the domestic market. Each time the Petuna Endeavour heads off to sea, the trawler carries a skipper plus four crew with each trip around a week in duration depending on the markets and sea conditions. Phil Hough, skipper of Petuna Endeavour of 16 years standing, has nothing but praise for his vessel. “This can be tough and at times dangerous work,” Phil Hough said. “The Petuna Endeavour has been through some wild and very tough seas, yet has never flinched once. In the engine room, the Yanmar S165 performed faultlessly and we logged up 200,000 engine hours over 30 years, an outstanding achievement for the Yanmar brand.” At 1150 rpm the Yanmar S165 was pushing the Petuna Endeavour along at a steady 8 knots with fuel burn at 55 litres per hour. The trawler carries 35,000 litres of fuel and has catch tanks with a combined capacity of 55 tonnes. Although there was nothing major wrong with the Yanmar S165, the owners decided that it was time to update and re-power Petuna Endeavour. In spite of the stunning record with the Yanmar S165, the owners undertook detailed research of competitive engine brands. As part of the buying process, the owners and skipper went to Melbourne to personally check over the Yanmar models. Power Equipment, the authorised Yanmar distributor, impressed greatly, not only with their modern facility, but the people themselves responsible for sales, technical support and parts supply. Yanmar stood out as the preferred brand and a brand new Yanmar 6AYM-WST was purchased. The repower was performed by Rogers and Lough marine engineers in Brisbane. Due to the configuration of the hull and the location of the engine room, an access hole was cut into the bottom of the steel hull. The trusty

NEWS 19 Yanmar S165 was removed through the hole and the new Yanmar 6AYM-WST with new Yanmar YXH240L transmission was winched into place. The Yanmar 6AYM-WST is a six in-line cylinder engine with a displacement of 20.39 litres and a rated power output of 659 mhp (485kw) at 1,900 rpm. This Yanmar model is noted for its strong performance, low fuel consumption and low emissions. The versatile Yanmar 6AY Series is extensively used in many applications including heavy displacement work boats but also in many high speed applications such as passenger ferries, patrol craft and fishing boats like Petuna Endeavour. A key attribute of this model Yanmar engine is the high torque output, particularly in the middle and high speed ranges for reliable work performance at sea. Following the six week re-power project, Petuna Endeavour was put through extensive sea trials. Fitted with a 5.36:1 reduction ratio and retaining the original Mikado 66" x 54.4" four blade prop, the Petuna Endeavour could comfortably steam at 1550 rpm for a speed of 8.8 knots. Fuel burn remained the same. “The repower gave us a 10% increase in speed for the same fuel consumption,” Phil Hough said. “When we need to get back to port in a hurry or beat the weather, we can run at 10.5 knots at 1800 rpm.” “From the helm the enhanced performance of the Yanmar 6AYM-WST is easily felt. This engine delivers a massive amount of torque and it’s good to have all that extra grunt on hand.” Typically Phil Hough will run the Yanmar 6AYM-WST engine for between 14 and 18 hours a day. Apart from the run out and back to port and then shifting from one fishing ground to the next, there is a lot of idling and constant gear shifting. “The mechanical fuel system on the Yanmar engine is ideal for our application. Plus, the 500 hour service intervals is a big bonus and we are able to change filters and oil while we are away at sea if necessary.” “Our experience with Yanmar has definitely been a positive one,” Phil Hough concluded.

Port Takola, Krabi’s new marina, commences operations in February

Phase one of Port Takola, Karbi’s new marina & boatyard, commenced operations in February. Located between Krabi Town and Ao Nang, Port Takola has started construction since 2009. The marina is built on 27 acres of redundant prawn farm ponds that is part of a private estate of the na Nagara’s family. The father and sons, Surgeon Admiral Suriya (RTN) and Matthew na Nagara, have worked together since the beginning to make this marina project happen. Matthew explains, “Port Takola’s phase one is a small but an exciting beginning for our family and team. After seven years of development, Port Takola will finally start servicing boat owners. We believe that our marina offers good shelter and an advantageous location for berthing. The marina basin has three metres depth below LAT and it is protected from storms and waves. Port Takola is close to Ao Nang and the many amenities and entertainment to offer; Krabi Town is only across the Jilad River and can be accessed by boat in five minutes, while Krabi International Airport is less than 40 minutes’ drive. Qatar Airways has just commenced direct flights from Doha to Krabi so it is becoming more convenient for boat owners to travel here. There are also direct flights from Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur.” Port Takola’s phase one will consist of 50 stern-to wet berths connected to a four-metre wide concrete pontoon system built by Marinetek. The boatyard will feature 10,000 m2 areas for about 50 dry berths for technical repairs. It will be serviced by a Roodberg submersible hydraulic trailer with a maximum lifting capacity of 38 tons with 2.5 metres maximum draft. The slipway has total of 12 metres width to accommodate larger catamarans, whose numbers are growing in Thailand. The marina will also introduce 20 moorings inside its basin to give boat owners affordable berthing options. Mr. Sebastien Caveriviere, a previous service manager of Simpson Marine Thailand, has been commissioned to manage marina operations. Sebastien was a captain in the Mediterranean and also a manager of Dream Yacht Charter Malaysia and Thailand. Matthew says, “Sebastien has both a technical knowledge and an experience in yachting. Port Takola phase one is a small beginning but we aim to provide a professional service from the start. We are pleased that Sebastien joins our team as his knowledge, skills, and expertise will help our team to provide a quality service to boat owner. Sebastian also speaks French, English, German, Malaysian, and Thai. This will also help boat owners to communicate with us more easily.” Port Takola is scheduled to flood its marina basin early January and to complete the pontoon and mooring installation soon afterwards. An onshore facility will continue to be developed. To commemorate the marina opening, the marina will give a 50% opening discount for any type of berthing. Boat owners who are interested in a berth can contact Matthew at matthew@porttakola.com or visit www.porttakola.com for more information.

Developing new passenger cats – the 55’ multipurpose transport vessel By Albert Nazarov (www.amdesign.co.th) Numerous accidents with speedboats in Thailand have made it necessary to re-think safer water transportation. Tourist operators and insurance companies are keen on providing safe transportation to their clients, but still there is still a lack of suitable boats. During the recent Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show (OMPBS), the Bakri Cono Shipyard in cooperation with designers from Albatross Marine Design presented their answer to the growing needs for safe and comfortable water transportation. By developing a new catamaran, they have tried to meet requirements for functional and safe craft to bring high-speed transportation to the new level, standing on previous experiences with this type of craft, but adding luxury and style to utilitary “bus” on the water.

The benefits of the catamaran are: ▲

Lower vertical acceleration levels, comprising 30-50% less compared to similar monohull craft. These numbers are based on full-size measurements on a number of boats. Lower accelerations on cats mean that the task can be solved on craft of smaller size, or they are able to maintain higher speed for given sea state. For craft with same passenger capacity, catamarans offer about 40% more saloon area per passenger, which results more comfortable accommodation. This is possible due to better utilization of space on catamarans, possessing wide and spacious cabin volumes.

The arrangement is quite simple – the passenger saloon has 40-54 forwardlooking seats, on both sides with a central passageway. The designers followed ergonomics and dimensioning of business/ economy class saloon of aircraft, but left a bit more space between the rows. The steering station is located in the front part of the saloon at starboard with console and seats for the crew of two. The small toilet is a must for 2+ hours voyages and is located at the stern part of the saloon portside. At starboard is a service room with pantry. The aft is an open deck used for passenger boarding through side doors. Side windows can be opened allowing airflow and protection from the rain. Between the front windows, there is angle-shaped weatherproof door that is used for bow access for the crew and can also be used in case of forward boarding through the bow cockpit. The bow of the catamaran is fitted with a bow ramp for beach loading. Once lifted, the ramp becomes an integral part of the bridge deck. Air-conditioning of the saloon is provided; an essential feature in the tropics. The new 55’ possess a typical planing catamaran hull shape with sharp chines, chine flats and a slightly wrapped bottom, the hulls are of symmetrical that have proved to be efficient in the pre-planing and early planing ranges. Shaft drives with propellers in pockets reduce draught. Steyr engines were used on the first boat, other propulsion options and drives including jet and stern drives are available g simple modifications and inserts in the mould. The hull structure is built with vacuum infusion and composite materials, with application of sandwich panels for the bottom, sides, deck, wet deck and superstructure. In general, the boat’s structure is designed following GL Rules for high-speed craft, which has proved to work well for small commercial craft on composite materials. The bow section below the waterline is filled with foam forming “collision blocks” – a solution that has worked well during accidents. Comparing composite designs with similar cats in aluminum, the designers say the composites are more affordable in price but lighter, meaning less fuel burn, or more load-carrying capacity. This craft is completely designed around passenger safety and comfort in terms of wave shocks on the seaway, no passengers are seated in areas vulnerable to damage - important in case of a collision or accident. The craft is subdivided into compartments by watertight bulkheads, will remain afloat in case any compartment is damaged. Main particulars: length of hull - 11.05m; beam – 3.9m, fully loaded displacement – 12000kg; engines – 2x370HP Volvo D6 (or 2x330HP with commercial rating); fuel – 2x750L; water – 200L, maximum speed – 32kts fully loaded; passenger capacity – 36. The design is patented in Thailand with Bakri Cono Shipyard being chosen by the designers as an exclusive builder of this craft in Thailand.

Foldable RIB quickly finding market niche By Mike Derrett

The Foldable Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat range exhibited at last week’s Dusseldorf Boat Show has found a growing market niche with leisure and workboat owners and is aiming for sales of 600 boats this year. UK based Foldable RIB is fast developing its market niche with a range of RIB’s that are easily transportable in a car, on a boat deck or in a storage locker. Originally developed by the Russian Navy as an easily transportable RIB the range is rapidly establishing itself in the leisure and work boat markets. The range of RIBS from 2.75 metres to 4.6 metres is finding a market with boat owners who like to have the superior handling performance of a RIB but only have limited deck or locker space for storage. Speaking to SEA Yachting at the Dusseldorf Boat Show Ricky Cole from Foldable RIB stated; “We have had a good response to the product range at the Dusseldorf Show and have launched a new 430 model which has the capacity to carry 6 people and folds into 4 sections to a storage size of 150X110X60 cm and like our other models can be assembled within five minutes. All of the boats in the range use a rigid hull which is divided into 3 or 4 hinged sections with a watertight seal which lock together with the aid of screw catches and the pressure from the side tubes once they are inflated.” Company Director Steve Bruce said; “We are very pleased at the reaction of the market to the Foldable RIB range since launching the range three years ago. We have seen sales grow to over 300 boats last year (2016) and we now have 9 models in the range, 7 power and 2 sailing models which should double our sales this year. The markets in Europe and the USA are doing very well and we are now expanding into Australia and Asia. The boats are manufactured in St Petersburg, Russia, to CE standards.”

The jury praised the Torqeedo Cruise FP for “its beautiful engineering and close attention to detail design, its integrated approach, its compact dimensions and market realistic price” – creating exciting new opportunities for the interior design of sailing yachts by removing the need for a traditional engine compartment. Christoph Ballin, Co-Founder and CEO of Torqeedo, commented on the DAME Award win. “We are absolutely thrilled to be the overall winner of the DAME Award for the second time. We are delighted to see the coming of age for electric mobility in the marine industry. We are proud to be a driver in this business, and we are thankful to be recognized for our approach by the DAME Jury”. The Cruise Pod drives from Torqeedo offer a practical electric alternative to inboard diesels. The system delivers maximum performance with minimal weight. The motor unit, which has already been used in thousands of outboard motors, is just one of the components of the integrated propulsion system that offers superior performance and convenience. The pod is complemented by Torqeedo's lithium batteries, new electronic throttle levers, specifically designed for sailboats and a new, modern user interface. The system can be charged by shore power, solar power and with a generator. It can also generate energy through hydro-generation while under sail. Torqeedo electric boat drives www.torqeedo.com

He presented the concept of an affordable, fast hydrofoil supported electric boat, with an excellent range which is in the prototype stage.

Ancon Marine Consultants — A new propeller concept After years of problems with propeller strike accidents, Ancon Marine Consultants found a new solution from Australia. Instead of a propeller guard and cover they have replaced the propeller edge with an eight millimeter rod, resulting in an innovative new solution with minimal reduction in engine performance that met with acclaim from the audience. Mag Bay is setting its sights on the center console market with a quality focused product.

he desert of Southern California may seem like an odd place to build boats. However, for the past 25 years several companies have successfully created and delivered thousands of boats out of this region, literally from sand to sea. About 100 miles from the coast, the small town of Adelanto has been home to several boat companies - most notably, CABO Yachts, which produced offshore fishing boats ranging 31-50’. From 1990 to 2006, the CABO range became known for top-quality construction details. CABO was the vision of Henry Morschladt and Mike Howarth, who also founded Pacific Seacraft Sailboats in 1976. Pacific Seacraft boats were known for their robust construction, and with nearly 2,000 units produced, Pacific Seacraft sold to a Singaporean holding company (circa 1984).

Mag Bay Yachts -

From Sand to Sea

The desert is now home to a new breed of boat construction with Mag Bay Yachts Founded by industry veteran Mike Howarth and his son Barrett, Mag Bay is setting its sights on the center console market with a quality focused product. Starting with a patented hull design from Michael Peters’, the company’s first model is a 33’ which has been receiving rave reviews in the American market. The center console market in the USA has been quite interesting to follow. It has changed dramatically over the past 15 years, morphing with the emergence of increasingly powerful outboard engines. As outboard engine technology brought more power, efficiency and reliability, the center console boats increased in size. Sometimes powered with either triple or quadruple outboards of 300-400hp each, center console boats are commonly seen up to 40-50’ in the USA, especially in South Florida. With the increase in size and power offerings, people began using these boats differently. In the past, center console boats were 100% focused on fishing, however many yachting enthusiasts started recognizing these fishing platforms actually made very good yacht tenders. In general, this class offers robust

construction with offshore handling traits, making for a safe and versatile platform. With customers increasingly demanding family & luxury amenities into center console boats, this class has evolved closer to the yacht segment. This history and market direction has been the basis for Adelanto’s new star boat builder. Under the direction of Mike Howarth, Mag Bay Yachts is destined to build the best center console on the market. Similar to CABO Yachts, the focus is on production quality. Each Mag Bay is built with a scrupulous attention to detail that; similar to previous Howarth boat building endeavors, is pushing boundaries and setting a new industry standard. The design concept of the 33’ was to build a gentlemen’s center console that featured the heart of a fishing boat, but also the comfort and styling of a dayboat. “The design vision of the Mag Bay series was to have hull lines that

The future at Mag Bay is bright

were totally unique. The goal was to create a boat that could be distinguished with a refined look.” Says Phil Bourque, Vice President, Sales & Marketing. The Mag Bay’s unique transom is a part of accomplishing the design goal. The shear-line on the Mag Bay 33 blends into tumblehome that extends into the transom featuring curves that straddle the aft splashwell. Mag Bay offers forward and aft seating configurations that are great options for a family cruising boat, while providing the backbone of an offshore worthy platform. The base price of the 33’ is $294,000 and is standard with twin Yamaha 300’s. Premium interiors are standard, with customers able to choose from a collection of fine materials and even stitching colors. The Mag Bay 33’ is available with many amenities such as, joystick, Seakeeper gyro, side door, extra-large top, and various seating options.

With 35 years of marine industry experience to rely upon with an emphasis on marine engineering, new construction projects, technical management, vessel management and surveys Sky Marine Group can provide their customers a level of expertise that others will find difficult to match. The company strives to make Yacht owners concerns their priority and provide the highest level of cost effective service by yacht owners for yacht owners and serves Mag Bay customers throughout Thailand with a one stop solution for all their yachting needs. Keep a lookout for the exciting developments coming from the Mag Bay team.

The team has plans to expand its factory in 2017, along with introducing a new model. The company established its first dealer partnership in Asia with the Sky Marine Group based in Phuket. Sky Marine will represent Mag Bay exclusively in Thailand, and has introduced the brand at recent Thai boat shows with great success. The Sky Marine group office is in Paklok, Phuket, a few minutes’ drive from Ao Po Grand Marina, and within easy reach of the other island marinas (Boat Lagoon, Royal Phuket Marina and Phuket Yacht Haven). As yacht owners and operators themselves, the Sky Marine Group fully understands the issues faced by other owners with regards to new yacht purchase and safe, reliable, cost effective yacht operation.

The Sail Thailand Rally 2017 By Bert van Muylwijk

T

he lush green coastline is clearly visible. It looks solid and impenetrable from a distance. A river comes out from between the mangrove forest but it is not distinguishable just yet. Checking the Cruising Notes for the exact GPS position the crew of the boat slowly drive closer to the shore. Sure enough, after 10 minutes the river coastline opens up and the yacht can proceed to the the night anchorage upstream. This must be the dream of every explorer: finding hidden gems with the help of local information. Long periods of moving on top of the waves of the Pacific Ocean is part of the life of a world cruiser heading towards the Asia-Pacific region. Picture-perfect islands are visited before hitting Australia and/or New Zealand. After a bit of “land-time”, a touch of maintenance and good shopping the crew is ready for the Asian region, which is excitingly different from their previous cruising destinations.

Cruising rallies In several Asian countries, the ones that are in the ‘logical sailing order’ for cruisers, initiatives started to organize rallies for those cruisers that want to discover the countries in more detail. Sponsored by the national tourist boards, marinas and other local, national or international companies the rallies are promoting the region and adding value to the discovery of the culture and geography of a country. The world cruisers are quite keen to enroll in a rally because: ◆ ◆ ◆ ◆ ◆ ◆

You’re among a community of cruisers Higher level of safety Clearance procedures are made transparent It’s a unique way of meeting local people Good fun activities are often organized Getting a real taste of local food at lunches and dinners

When the yachts leave Australia they almost all go visit Indonesia. Hence the Sail Indonesia rally was set up a few years ago and Sail 2 Indonesia followed. In these rallies cruisers slowly make their way to Malaysia where they can participate in the Sail Malaysia rally. There are actually two rallies in Malaysia. One on the West side and later in the year Sail Malaysia East, where they’ll make their way to Saba. Up to this year there was not yet a rally opportunity in Thailand. This now has changed in 2017: Sail Thailand, a rally for visiting yachts from Langkawi to Phuket. The initiative was born over a year ago when Marieke Derks from the Sevenstar Yacht Transport company was approached by the Sail Malaysia organization with a request to look into possibilities for a rally in Thailand. Zara Tremlett from Phuket Yacht Haven Marina and Marieke were organizing the 4th Phuket Cruisers Party. Through a rally the Party could become a more regional event and hence it was decided to make that happen. The Sail Thailand rally was born. Of course this was only possible with the help of sponsors whose logos are depicted in the picture above.

35

Rally start in Langkawi On January 10, 2017 at 9 am in Rebak Marina in Langkawi the crews of 9 sailing and motor yachts assembled for a joint breakfast being the official start of the Sail Thailand rally, the 10th participating yacht would join them in Chalong, Phuket. Cruising Notes (with suggested routes) and other Information was handed out, presentations were made and soon the participants were on their way. “Beautiful breakfast in Reebak, great chance to meet other participants” “Great place to start the rally!”

Rebak Marina, Langkawi.

“Sail Thailand is a positive step to the creation of the ASEAN cruising agenda. Together with Sail Malaysia and Sail Indonesia, we now have a complete route around ASEAN whereby yachts from Australasia and other parts of the world can sail in a 2-3 year loop. I wish Sail Thailand every success in the future and Marieke is the perfect person to drive this initiative.” Sazli Kamal Basha, Director Sail Malaysia

Clearance in Chalong, Thailand The next stop for the yachts was Chalong in Phuket on January 16th, which gave the yachts 6 days to explore the picturesque islands and anchorages in the South of Thailand. After the clearing into Thailand, facilitated by Porntip Logistics, the crews were treated to a delicious lunch at Phuket Yacht Club. A visit to the “Big Buddha” statue up in the hills kicked of the Phuket Welcome Tour. This was followed by a tour at the Chalong Bay Rum distillery (with some of the rum available for a tasting session…). After all these efforts a well-deserved foot massage was on offer according to the famous Thai foot reflexology method. The event sponsor for the Phuket Welcome Tour was East Marine.

Lunch at Phuket Yacht Club.

“Excellent lunch and the afternoon program was once again superbly organized. Felt very spoilt with foot massage”

36

Port Takola, Krabi On January 19 the Sail Thailand rally participants sailed across Phang Nga Bay to Krabi. Here, at the river leading to Krabi Town we find Port Takola Marina, currently under construction. Port Takola was the event sponsor for the afternoon and evening. They also kindly organized 2 land tours and different kinds of transport the next day. Although the yachts still had to anchor outside in the river they could enter the marina basin in the afternoon with their tenders for some welcome words, refreshments and an elephant welcoming party. In the evening the Krabi Cultural Party took place hosted by Port Takola. An excellent dinner was served at the nearby Kolek Cuisine restaurant followed by lively dancing and singing to the tunes of a live band. Over a 100 people attended. Next to the ‘boaties’ quite a few local authorities including the vice-governor of the Krabi Province, sailors and representatives from the marine industry were present at this event that also showed traditional Thai dancing by a group of endearing school children. Many participants appreciated the free flow of beer and wine. The next day the participants could choose between two different day excursions or visting Krabi Town for shopping and sightseeing. The excursions to choose from were either a visit to an artisan village The catamaran “Twenty Twenty Vision” of Jimmy MacKey had the scoop: the very first followed by a visit to a fairy-like river and hotyacht ever in Port Takola!. springs in a mangrove forest. Or one could go on a jungle tour followed by a visit to the famous ‘Tiger Temple’ just outside Krabi town. “Our first time in Krabi and loved it. Port Takola will be an excellent destination in time. This Phuket Yacht Haven Marina stop was so well organised with pick-ups from boat It rapidly became 24 January, with the final stop and already etc. The restaurant was a superb event, food and the end of the very first 2017 Sail Thailand rally at Phuket Yacht ambiance …” Haven marina in the North of Phuket. Of course it goes without saying that ending the rally should be a memorable happening. Two last events were lined up for the participants. In the afternoon at The “Night time was the best I have ever been to. Deck of the marina restaurant a Cruisers Market was organized: a Great venue, great crowd, great staff and totally fun and sometimes instructive afternoon full of hands-on activities awesome food and wine!!!” and demonstrations. The target audience for the afternoon event was, as signified by the title, cruisers in general. In the various stands they were invited to learn a variety of skills: “It is a great pleasure for Krabi and Port Takola to be involved in a first edition of the Sail ◆ massage your own hands and feet while cruising Thailand Rally. Krabi is renowned for it’s many ◆ fold a towel to create a beautiful swan or other animal by picturesque sailing destinations such as Railey, Koh Galileo Maritime Academy Hong and Phi Phi, but it is less known for it’s onshore ◆ learn Thai for cruisers (“I need a sailmaker”) attraction. There are captivating nature destinations, ◆ make your own herbal compress for a Thai hot herbal culture, and local scenes that are waiting for sailors to compress massage be explored. Krabi is also a waterfront town with ◆ ropework and rigging demonstrations and Q&A by David more marine facilities and service rapidly becoming Samuelsson available.” Matthew Na Nagara, General Manager Also information stands were present with many ‘need to Port Takola know’ facts like where to buy great food, where to rent a car or how to transport my yacht to the Mediterranean. All very useful pieces of information for visiting cruisers. All companies on the Yacht Haven premises were present to give information.

37

The Grande Finale With 160 guests attending the Sevenstar Phuket Cruisers Party 2017 was fully booked. Already in its fifth year this Party has become one of those events that is on all cruisers’ calendars. This year all Sail Thailand participants were automatically invited. Hence the remaining tickets were very sought after. The Deck at Phuket Yacht Haven proved again to be a superb venue for such a big party with its staff as always very professional, kind and helpful. After the welcome cocktails, Marieke Derks took the floor to announce the official end of the Sail Thailand rally while thanking the rally participants and sponsors involved. Having finished this one, Sazli Kamal Basha from Sail Malaysia presented details of the next rally: Passage to the East which will end in Sabah and will start in April 2017. A representative of the rally participants grabbed the mic and lauded the program, the hospitality and the professional organization of the last two weeks. Dinner buffet was on the table after these kind words and everybody ‘dug in’. Thanks to the Tourist Authority of Thailand elegant Thai dancers accompanied by a Thai band performed a great dancing show. Of course the visitors started to become restless after seeing that and from that moment with live entertainment available the dance floor was never empty until late. “We thoroughly enjoyed this rally and would recommend it very highly to other boaties. The itinerary, organization and events were excellent” Rita and David Jackson, SY Beachhouse 57

“Congratulations on a great Rally. We will be encouraging friends to join next year and will possibly do it again if we are in the area.” John and Barbara Bayntun on SY Murundi

“The positive feedback we have received from the participants of Sail Thailand has encouraged us hugely. Being the first year it became obvious that some details need to be looked into while other aspects can be improved. However the survey we did after the rally showed us that we have created something valuable. So we’re looking forward to another episode of Sail Thailand. Thank you participants and thank you sponsors!!” Marieke Derks

solated from the rest of the world, Borneo has long remained a ‘forgotten land’. Mountainous, covered in dense rainforest, it was home to many unique species, such as the Orangutan, Proboscis Monkey, Borneo Rhino, Pygmy Elephant, as well as the Green and Hawksbill Turtle. For hundreds of years, the head-hunting tribes of Borneo were left to themselves with just occasional Chinese or Philippine trader or explorer ships passing by.

In the 14th and 15th centuries the first Malay arrived from the Malay Peninsula and settled on the north coast at Brunei. Soon, most of the northern Borneo coastal region became part of the Brunei Empire, governed by the Sultan of Brunei. Through various trade deals with the Sultan, Sarawak -west Borneo- came under governorship of the British Brooke family (the White Raja). In the 19th and early 20th century Sabah -east Borneo- came under control of the North Borneo Company and was known as British North Borneo. For a few years during the Second World War, Sabah was occupied by the Japanese. After the war, it became a British Crown Colony from 1946 to 1963. For a very short period, from 31st August 1963 to 16th September 1963, Sabah was under self-government, before joining the Federation of Malaysia.

Contemporary Borneo is divided into four political regions: Kalimantan belongs to Indonesia; a small remaining region comprises the sultanate of Brunei; and Sarawak and Sabah are part of Malaysia. Although large areas remain unexplored, nowadays vast swathes of rainforest have given way to palm plantations. The various indigenous tribes have hung up their blow pipes and poisonous darts. Orangutans and other endangered species in the remaining jungle, are competing for their existence as the modern world is encroaching on their habitat. Tourism has been steadily growing over the past decade. Although an influx of tourists brings its own issues, paradoxically, it is largely the tourist dollar funding conservation projects that help preserve much of the wildlife and nature for future generations.

There are Orangutan sanctuaries, tribal longhouses in the jungle, protected turtle egg laying beaches and turtle hatcheries. Large areas of land and sea are now declared Nature Reserves. Some of the finest diving in the world can be found here. Borneo Orangutans, Tanjung Puting National Park by WWF.

Endangered Tiger, New Hero Image by WWF.

LAND BELOW THE WIND Sabah’s name in the local tribal language means ‘Land Below the Wind’. It refers to the location of Sabah south of the typhoon belt: tropical storms and typhoons, which cross the Pacific Ocean, as a rule turn north, leaving Borneo and Sabah well alone. With the equator running through Borneo, the climate is tropical and hot year around. Combined with abundant rainfall, it makes sense that the island’s flora is among the most diverse in the world. The ‘wet’ season is the North East Monsoon from early November to the end of April. The ‘dry’ season is the South West monsoon from the beginning of May to the end of October.

CRUISING IN SABAH History has contributed to Sabah’s melting pot: it’s a true Endangered Turtle by DEVOCEAN Co. multicultural society which is especially noticeable in Kota Kinabalu, the state’s capital. ‘KK’ as it is known to all inhabitants, is an international air-traffic hub and a convenient embarkation point for a fabulous boating holiday. A cruise would start and finish in KK’s Sutera Harbour, situated close to the international airport and with luxury hotels, golf

courses and shopping centers nearby. From KK it is easy to put together a cruising itinerary to suit individual tastes. Visit remote, uninhabited islands (Pulau) and anchorages with clear water and white beaches. Go diving, snorkeling and swimming, or use the yacht’s kayaks, SUPs or the classic sailing dinghy. For many guests the most favourite pastime is to switch off their phone and internet connection and just lay back and enjoy life in the slow lane with family and friends, while appreciating the view and the yacht’s luxurious hospitality.

Pulau Gaya, a short sail from KK, is part of the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. It has been a forest reserve since 1923 and there are some excellent hiking trails through the dense, tropical forest. Next stop could be Pulau Tiga, the original location of the first ‘Survivor’ TV series, and equally, if not more famous, for its therapeutic natural volcanic mud baths. Several days can be spend at Pulau Mengalum for fishing and water sports and Pulau Mantanani, offering excellent snorkeling and diving. It is recommended to visit the beautiful Ambong and Usukan Bay back on the mainland, before sailing back to KK. Usukan Bay is the final resting place of three ships (most likely Japanese) that were sunk by an American submarine on the night of 1 October 1944, during World War II. Over the years the ships have accumulated colourful soft and hard corals. Plenty of large and small sea creatures are hiding in and around the wrecks, which make for a very interesting and vibrant dive spot. Another option is to head west from KK. After stops at Pulua Gaya, Pulau Tiga and Mengalum, visit Labuan, a large island which is great for a trip ashore. Pulau Keraman also has several Second World War shipwrecks in its surrounding waters, including Dutch steamer SS De Klerk and a minesweeper, the USS Salute. Sail across the bay and call into Brunei. Guests can then opt for a leisurely cruise back to KK or, if their holiday time is limited, fly out from Labuan or Brunei, both well connected airports

41

An eastward cruise from KK would include Pulau Gaya, Pulau Mengalum, Ambong and Usukan Bays, Pulau Mantanani and then sailing past the ‘Tip of Borneo’ onto Pulau Balambanga. If you feel lucky, go treasure hunting: traditional lore has it that an old Chinese or British ship carrying gold and other precious good, sunk during a heavy storm nearby the island and has yet to be found. Also on “Treasure Island” are limestone caves with interesting stalactites, stalagmites and flow stone. At the next anchorage, Pulau Banggi, the local people are known for their unusual tribal treehouses. They are Sabah’s smallest indigenous group, and speak a unique non-Bornean dialect. The island has sandy beaches, tropical trees and is surrounded by clear water. There is great snorkeling and diving and occasional sightings of whales. Finally disembark in Kudat, the northern most town in Sabah for the road trip back to KK. Laid-back Kudat used to be a vital trading post and capital of Borneo in the late 19th century. Some of the streets have Chinese names, going back to the British adminstration’s request to the Chinese to come and run their coconut plantations. Many of their descendants are still here today, along with Bajau, Rungus and Filipino immigrants. The picturesque road trip back to KK takes about 4 hours and leads past sandy beaches and blue seas, village markets and small fruit and food stalls along the way. Sailing yacht DALLINGHOO is a 100 ft/30m classic schooner, accommodating 8 guests in 4 cabins. She offers charters out of KK from May to October with an experienced Captain and four crew. Other times of the year DALLINGHOO cruises in Myanmar, Andaman Islands and Thailand/Malaysia.

AVARIA YACHTS presents the all new “E” series of yachts with the E40. In the name the “E” stands for: economic, ecological, exploring, efficient and emotional. Manufactured 100% in Germany the new E40 brings all of the quality and engineering excellence you would expect from a German made product. The main hub of life onboard the BAVARIA E40 is the spacious saloon. Whether from the central helm stand, the large dining table or the pantry fully equipped with stove, oven and large fridge, you’ll enjoy the perfect 360? view over the sea and off into the horizon.

After taking part in the BAVARIA E40’s test sailings, some of the many satisfied guests said: “When you sail the BAVARIA E40, you’re in the heart of life in the middle of the ocean amongst all your friends on board. You probably won’t find another place this good to be a helmsman. The helmsman can manoeuvre the boat perfectly while also having a good time with everybody else on board during the trip.” A spacious interior with a real panoramic saloon; a large cabin with bathroom and separate shower at the foreship; two other cabins to choose from aft, each with their own bathroom these features make the BAVARIA E40 the ideal yacht for an extended holiday with six to eight people as much in the flybridge version as it was in the SEDAN version. The BAVARIA E40 FLY offers the perfect view for the helmsman from one of the two helmstands - one at the steering pedal in the luminous saloon between the cockpit and living area or one in the large flybridge. Besides being an ergonomic helmstand, it also offers an ideal place to have breakfast under the sun as well as having a perfect sunbathing area. Under the saloon are the drive and mechanical components of the BAVARIA E40. Its revolutionary use of space has made it possible to make the cabins, particularly those at the stern of the ship, more spacious and more comfortable in design. As a semi-displacement motor yacht, the BAVARIA E40 has been designed not with speed in mind, but rather economy, safety, comfort and being at one with nature while travelling. VOLVO PENTA drives between 75 PS and 300 PS as well as a hybrid drive provide the BAVARIA E40 with the necessary power. In producing the new BAVARIA E40 motor yacht product line, innovative modular engineering was undertaken in BAVARIA YACHTS’ modern dockyard hangar. This revolutionary motor yacht has the interior, hull and deck built on separate yet parallel assembly

lines before finally being pieced together at the end of the 125-meter-long production line. This results in higher quality, shorter construction times and better working conditions for our employees. As with all BAVARIA yachts, the BAVARIA E40 is also manufactured with an elaborate vacuum infusion process. The even lighter and more stable hulls are more durable, are more efficient to drive and are produced in an eco-friendly way. T

he second Wonderful Indonesia Nongsa Regatta recently concluded and almost all involved vowed to return. Staged at the Nongsa Point Marina & Bar in Batam, Indonesia, the regatta stands ready to replace the now defunct Singapore Straits Regatta, which was held in midJanuary annually. Nine keelboats competed in the main event, all from Singapore with four of them coming from Singapore Management University (SMU). Many of SMU’s sailors are female and in this regatta two of the skippers were female as well. No university in Southeast Asia has a more active sailing program than SMU and it proved it once again with four entries and a group of SMU students crewing on another boat as well. It’s too bad universities in other Southeast Asian countries don’t follow suit and give SMU other university teams to race against. Low Chig Wee/Chong Wei Yong’s Discover Sailing Asia Getaway Ichi, a Ker 32, won the nine-

boat IRC A Class with 16 points; Quarterdeck, a J24, helmed by Calvin Lim Zhi Yang finished second with 22 points; while Kurt Metzger’s Nelson 10 Waka Tere, grabbed third place with 25 points. Rounding out the IRC Class A was Gordon Maxted’s Young 88 Shoon Fung Too in fourth place with 31 points; Alexei Lim Zongwei’s Platu 25 SMUMAD in fifth spot with 33 points; Bernice Foo Ling Lo’s J24 Shengli in sixth place with 43 points; Alison Chia Lin Yen’s SMUVE (Platu 25) in seventh place with 54 points; Justin Lean’s Mumm 30, Invictus, in eighth place with 63 points; and Paolo Nalin/John Zwinck’s Naya, an Elan 350, last with 90 points. IRC B saw a tie between Quarterdeck and Waka Tere, each with 18 points, but Calvin’s boat claimed top prize as a result of more first-place finishes. Third spot went to Gordon Maxted’s Shoon Fung Too with 24 points; he was followed by Alexei Lim Zongwei’s SMUMAD in fourth (26 pts), Bernice Foo Ling Lo’s Shengli in fifth (37 pts) and Alison Chia Lin Yen’s SMUVE in sixth (45 pts.) The regatta was relatively mishap free. When the Northeast Monsoon blows, and it really does at this time of the year, there’s no lack of good wind and that’s what the participants in this regatta saw—three full days of continuous strong wind. The regatta saw 12 optimists and 5 lasers completing over two days of sailing on a short course within the marina confines. Young Indonesians from the Riau Yacht Club competed in the tree classes it was amazing to see the composure they showed. Jerry, Aril & Rava were 1, 2, 3, in the Optimist Boys Class; while Dilla A Safitri, Nurul Hidayah & Priscilla were 1, 2, 3 in the Optimist’s Girls & in the Laser 4.7 class it was Andini Setya N with top honours, followed by Revtio N & Suchi Indah R. There was also a radiocontrolled boat race, featuring six boats, and the winner was Geoff Shepherd with Bart Ouwerling taking second spot and Mark Biggs in third. This was the second regatta that the Nongsa Point Marina & Bar has staged in its 26-year history, though it does play host to the Neptune Regatta on its way out and back from the equator and in the past it also hosted the Singapore Straits Regatta. Regatta organizer and Marina Manager Prakash Reddy did a superb job of making sure that all ran smoothly, and the race officials from the Changi Sailing Club did a great job on the water.

The Marina Nongsa Point Marina & Resort features 65 world-class berths designed by globally acclaimed Bellingham Marina, including two berths for mega-yachts up to 130 feet. Each berth comes with a dedicated utility pedestal with electricity and water. The marina is also equipped with a mobile sewerage pump out system that can be brought to each berth. A central fuel jetty is available to provide both diesel and gasoline. Boats must be insured to be operated in Indonesian waters, against loss, damage, fire, third-party and other liabilities. Nongsa is in a strategic location for yachts to stopover heading to/from the South China Sea, to the Straits of Malacca or south to Bali/Jakarta. The restaurant/bar is open 24hrs; hotels and villas are available for daily or long-term rental or lease. Most common services can be done in Batam – mechanical and electrical. Haul up facilities are located nearby: www.asianfastmarine.com/en/. Sail repair and new sails are available from North Sail loft. Both the Singapore and Batam Airports are also close by (www.nongsapointmarina.com).

he 15th Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) 2017 welcomed some of its regular favourites as well as a number of new participants to the renovated Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC). The regatta took place from 9th to 14th January and gave participants a new experience with Fisherman’s Wharf Langkawi opened on the premises of the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club. Participants came from as far as Singapore,

Malaysia, Thailand, United Kingdom, Denmark, USA, Hong Kong, the Russian Federation and Australia to compete. This popular regatta is the first international event on the annual Malaysian tourism calendar. It is hosted by the RLYC for the first time in the newly built Fishermen’s Wharf, a new landmark in Langkawi populated with a variety of restaurants, shops, entertainment and a yacht club hotel with 44 rooms. “ We would like

to see Langkawi as a future nautical tourist destination” said Tayfun Koksal, the RLYC’s general manager. Commenting on the recently completed renovations at the Mr. Koksal said, “We are pleased that the re-development has been completed and that the new Langkawi Yacht Club hotel with its 44 nautical themed rooms is in operation as well as Fisherman’s Wharf Langkawi. This will be the first time that besides the exciting regatta all participants will enjoy several dining and entertainment options on Fisherman’s Wharf Langkawi together with the racing during the day.” Teams competed for the Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy – for Racing Class yachts; the Commodore’s Challenge Cup – for participants of club-registered cruisers; the LADA-IRC Challenge Trophy – for participants in the IRC 1 Class; the RLIR-IRC2 Challenge Trophy – for participants in the IRC 2 Class; the Langkawi Sports Trophy – for participants in the Sports Boat Class and the Malaysian Multihull Challenge Cup – for participants in the Multihull category. Lennart Stegland, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia and a sailor himself, said “Sailing is part of the lifestyle of Volvo and we have a long history with the Volvo Ocean Race,

the most advanced sailing event around the world. ” Volvo Malaysia is this year’s partner with the RLIR and is looking into the possibility of becoming a regular sponsor and partner of the RLIR. The 30 participating boats were split into eight classes; nine of the participating boats were newcomers and nine were locally-owned boats. In the four racing days of the 2017 regatta the Racing, IRC1, IRC2 and Sportsboats Classes competed in seven races. The Multihulls raced six times, the Club Cruisers five times and the Ocean Rovers and White Sails had four races.

No one does it better than Captain Marty (AsianYachting.com) (We’ve tried, but we just can’t beat Captain Marty’s race reports. Here’s a precis of his RLIR final summary) Don Whitcraft’s TP52 THA 72 won all six races in the Racing Class to take home the Prime Minister’s Challenge trophy on their first attempt. Whitcraft, at 21, became the youngest skipper in RLIR history to claim top honours. Scott Bradley’s Sydney 40 Emagine came second overall and Steven Manning/Anthony Root’s Ker 42 Black Baza, faded with the wind and settled into third overall. Last year’s champion,

61

Peter Ahern’s syndicated Oi! slow start to the 4 regatta, reduced the five time3 RLIR champion, to fourth overall. Vincent Chan’s Titan 36 Mata Hari KL Registry had 7 wins and added the LADA-IRC Challenge Trophy to past RLIR victories. John Kara’s heavier Beneteau First 45 Insanity and Faugeres bigger Elliot 46 Ph Plus followed suite, scoring 2nd and 3rd places in every race, to end up in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Niels Degenkolw’s X -ton Phoenix with 7 wins returned the RLIR IRC 2 Challenge Trophy back into Thai expat hands. Other than one glitch

on the second-last day, Jeremy Camps Impala 28 Old Pulteney Blue Angel scored second-place finishes throughout to claim second overall. Needing a bit more breeze, Liz Scoch and the allgirl crew, on the Farr 1104 Sailescapes Farrgo Ladies, put in a good effort and enjoyed a noticeable presence. The Sportsboat Class scoreboard changed with every race. Rizal (Tom) Mahadi Sazili’s RSYC Team were determined to keep the lead and came out with all cylinders firing. Ku Anas Ku Zamil’s University Malaysia Terengganu team were first round the top mark, with Rizal’s RSYC Team

62

in second place and within touching distance. Better gybing angles and speed on the downwind saw the RSYC Team take the lead and never look back, to take the race and the overall Langkawi Sports Trophy victory. Despite 5th place on the final day, Mohd. Masyuri’s Malaysian Armend Force Team 1, held on for second overall. Second place for Thailand’s Ithanai Yingsiri’s Pine-Pacific on the final day gave them third overall, despite the dip in form mid-regatta. Defending champions Koh Ling Ying’s Singapore Management University ended in fourth overall. Although Ku Anas Ku Zamil’s University Malaysia Terengganu team and Thailand’s Puvich Chanyim Burapha University Sailing Team finished down the order, they both

won races. Given some open space and enough wind to move, Robert van Paridon’s 12.81m trimaran Tantrum Too, outclassed his two opponents in every race but the first one to win the Multihull Challenge Cup, on their first attempt. Gerhard Pils Pulse 600 Fetz Ma started with a giant slaying act but couldn’t repeat it and settled on second overall. Finally, on the last race, Aussie Rick Fielding’s 11.58 catamaran Mojo got the better of Pils Fetz Ma in the handicap stakes but third overall was always on the cards. The Russians on Korolev Nikolai’s Hanse 44 Milashka, finally converted line honours to a win on handicap and elevate themselves into second overall. Second place on the last day was

63

Offshore to claim their first victory in the Club Class and lift the RLYC Commodore’s Cup, with a great deal of commotion. A tough couple of days for Chris Mitchell’s Naut 40 Lady Bubbly saw them relegated to third overall. After suffering three defeats, Henning Lenz 10.36m My Toy bounced back on the final day to defeat Fabian Fernandez’s Eygthene 24 O/B Freedom 12, but it came too late in the proceedings, to improve beyond second overall, in the Ocean Rover Class. After a couple year’s absence, John Ormston’s 13m Invictas Reward made it four wins in a row, to clinch the White Sails title. Arriving late from Thailand, Jack Christensen’s Bavaria 49 Linda scored several second-place finishes and relegated A’dale Adham Ayahudin’s Oyster 55 Chantique to third overall.

Summary

The special “Tunku Abdullah Sportsmanship” award is dedicated to the memory of the Regatta Founding Chairman and RLYC Commodore Almarhum Tunku Tan Sri Abdullah Tuanku Abdul Rahman. It is

voted on by the participants and awarded for competitiveness, fair racing and comradeship, both on and off the water. This year the award went to Rick Fielding’s 11.58m catamaran Mojo, from the Multihull Class. Tayfun Koksal’s parting comment was: “The day we had no race turned out to be a great day for all the sailors to meet old and make new friends at Charlie’s. I am also very pleased that we had a final race on the last day despite the mediocre wind conditions. It was my first regatta at the RLYC and I am very happy to see one of the newcomers winning all races in the Racing Class. We hope that in 2018 we get more participants and many more newcomers.” The Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) 2017 is organized by the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) and sanctioned by the World Sailing (formerly ISAF) and the Malaysian Sailing Association (MSA), and supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malaysia. It is part of the Asian Yachting Circuit.

highlights Thailand’s marine and luxury lifestyle offerings

“A

sia’s favourite boat show”, the Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) presented by Thailand Elite, was held at the award-winning Royal Phuket Marina from the 5th to 8th January. Staged during Phuket’s peak season when villa owners, jet-setters and the wealthy elite are enjoying the island’s famed luxury lifestyle, and more than 120 marine businesses and luxury brands from around the globe were represented at the annual event – a fixture on the global marine industry calendar. Positioning Phuket as the marine and lifestyle hub of Asia, the annual Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) exceeded expectations in its 14th year. “We had an excellent line-up of boats in-thewater, including many top global brands. Interesting this year is the increase in the number of sail boats on display, in particular multihulls,” commented Mr. Andy Dowden, Managing Director of Andaman Marine Consultants, organiser of the Phuket International Boat Show.

66

The show had a fantastic array of yachts in the water, dinghies, marine equipment, sports clothing and chandlery.

“Following the reduction in duties and taxes on international boats from more than 200% to zero in 2004, Phuket has become the home base of choice for regional boat owners. The island today welcomes more than 2,000 yachts a year and is a 10 Billion Baht-a-year industry, and through PIMEX and the business it generates at show and post show, we expect to contribute more than six billion baht to the island’s economy.” Known for it’s large in-water display of top international boat brands, this year excels with 40 boats in-the-water, and most of the top international sail and power boat brands represented, including Admiral, Airship RIBs, Axopar, Azimut, Beneteau, Corsair Marine, Fairline, Fleming, Fontaine Pajot, Galeon, Gulf Craft, Hanse, Jeaneau, Lagoon, Mag Bay, Majesty Yachts, Monte Carlo Yachts, Moody, Prestige, Princess Yachts, San Lorenzo and Sunseeker, just to name a few. These were joined by models from local builders Cholamark Boat and Sunnav. Leading dealerships Simpson Marine and Boat Lagoon Yachting have the largest inwater footprint and were joined by displays from Northrop and Johnson, Derani Yachts, Go

Boating Thailand, MGC Marine, Multihull Solutions, South East Asia Yacht Sales and Services, and Asia Marine. Onshore highlights included a large selection of brokerage yachts, premium properties, luxury cars, super bikes from Harley Davison, as well as exclusive membership offerings from Thailand Elite. A comprehensive array of marine products and services including engine suppliers, chandlery, Seabob, paddle boards, yacht charter, marine tours, plus watersport clothing and accessories experts Rip Curl and more rounded out an exciting PIMEX 2017 line-up. Local boat builder and charter company, Sunnav Co. Ltd., was also represented as was as Watchara Marine Co. Ltd., authorised dealers of YAMAHA Marine products, who was a first-time exhibitor to the show as well as Airship Ribs. “Following an extensive marketing campaign thousands of visitors enjoyed the quality exhibitor line-up and unique waterfront atmosphere of Royal Phuket Marina over the four-day show, including potential buyers flying in from key markets such as Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Russia and also Bangkok,” added Dowden. The show had a fantastic array of yachts in the water, dinghies, marine equipment, sports clothing and chandlery. Alongside will be luxury property, exotic motor cars, motorcycles and other luxury goods offering a varied insight into the island lifestyle. PIMEX impressed with an abundance of action in the marina and waterside Exhibition Hall, and a busy boardwalk at host venue Royal Phuket Marina. Despite the never-before-seen weather conditions on the last two days, visitor turnout was strong with a record over the opening days, and exhibitor feedback very positive.

67

“It was very much a Phuket International Boat Show of two halves this year. The first two days were exceptional. Visitor traffic was higher than in any of the past 13 editions and exhibitor feedback was excellent. We welcomed close to 3,000 audited visitors over the first two days and despite the heavy rain on the last two days brokers were still hosting qualified visitors on tours, and exhibitors in the Hall were transacting business,” said Mr. Andy Dowden, Managing Director of Andaman Marine

luxury properties, super bikes and more showed their wares in the exhibition hall, including a new addition this year, the “Mariners Market”. “One of our goals has always been to ensure that the show provides a sales and marketing platform for everyone, and after discussing with many in the industry we launched the first Mariner’s Market with 10 trailer boats including everything from entrylevel RIBs and small day boats, up to some very high-end RIBs and superyacht tenders,” added Dowden.

Consultants, organiser of the Phuket International Boat Show. “In addition to the excellent exhibitor feedback, it was encouraging to see the large number of international visitors – approximately 50% of the total. This is the reason we host the show during the island’s peak season, when most wealthy visitors come to Phuket, as these are a key target market for the majority of our exhibitors.” In the water the show heralded a grand display of 40 boats including representation of top international brands from around the world. From small day boats up to large luxurious powerboats and everything in between, one of the stand out features this year was the growth in the number of sailing yachts on display – approximately 20% of the total. One hundred businesses exhibited and in addition to the impressive boats on display, a mix of marine products and ancillary services,

Phuket International Boat Show’s successful format provides not only a sales and marketing platform the marine and lifestyle industries but also a unique opportunity to meet and network with trade and HNWI consumers through a series of social events during the show, the highlight of which was an exclusive cocktail party hosted by Thailand Elite which brought together many international guests, VIPs and card-holders who enjoyed an evening of fine wines and curated canapés. Like its location, PIMEX is a relaxed event where participants celebrate the boating, leisure and luxury lifestyle in an ideal tropical destination. The show is more than boats on display but also an opportunity to see the latest luxury products, properties and engage in some Phuket hospitality. For more details, visit www.phuketboatshow.com or www.facebook.com/ PIMEXPhuketInternationalBoatShow.

SEAY Yachting Q & A with

68

1) Please tell us a little about where you are from, where you grew up and how you became interested in sailing. I’m from Liege, Belgium where I grew up not too far from a river, La Meuse. Ever since, I have lived close to the ocean or a river. I believe Cousteau’s movies (http://www.cousteau.org/who/thecaptain/) were the trigger for me to develop this passion for the sea. I learned sailing when I was 14 and diving when I was 20. The ocean is my home, my passion and when I’m out there, I feel that is where I belong. 2) Is it true that in Brussels they only up the bridges twice a year to allow boats to leave/enter? What is like leaving or entering Brussels at that time? The passage from the Brussels Royal Yacht Club (http:// www.bryc.be/site/) to the sea was organized twice a year back in 1997. All locks open the same date, so all boats go through them to go to the the sea shore in April and come back before winter. It’s quite an event with all boats following each other and gathering for a party afterwards. 3) Describe your 13-year odyssey at sea for us. My partner and I left from the Brussels Royal Yacht Club in April 1997 on our boat Minuet, with the objective: of sailing east (most boats start their circumnavigation by sailing west) going through the Red Sea (we were both divers and had already dived a lot there). We spent the spring in the Med, which was very challenging since the Med is a treacherous sea sometimes. The passage through the Suez Canal, then the Red Sea, was quite an adventure, especially diving at the sites where Jacques Cousteau made his movie “Le silence de la mer”, a dream come true! We enjoyed the Indian Ocean, although not so much the South Indian Ocean, which can be really choppy most times. We also really enjoyed the Pacific Ocean, probably called “Pacific” for many reasons, it’s soothing and the islands are remote and just stunning such as the Marquesas, Galapagos, and the San Blas of course before crossing the majestic Panama Canal. 4) During the trip, what were some of the favorite places you visited and why? The Red Sea is an absolute must for keen divers, so splendid, colorful with vivid colors hardly seen in other places. 5) Any scary experiences (pirates, extremely bad weather, capsizing, etc.)? Yes, extremely bad weather, 70 knots of wind and a 24-hour storm in the Med, the boat capsized then came back up in a few seconds…minutes…transforming the boat into an enormous “shaker”. Apart from having to cut loose a surf board we had on the side of the boat we only suffered from some bulbs exploding on the top of the mast and everything upside down and everywhere in the boat. Quite an experience that makes you realize: the sea makes you humble! She rules! 6) How did you end up in Thailand and why did you stay? Thailand is an absolute must for circumnavigators, such a great place to stay & rest for a while, no typhoons, wonderful people, great food and plenty of places to shelter. We came back to Thailand in 2010 after a circumnavigation-and-half and decided it was time to sell “Minuit”, we sold her then settled on land because of the exact same reasons we sailed to Thailand. 7) What places do you still want to visit and why? I still want to visit hundreds of places, my bucket list is really, really long from the Isle of Skye in Scotland to the myriad of islands in New Zealand.

Gigi in Martinique on Minuit, her boat in 2008.

8) How do you spend most of your time these days: we know you are a big force on social media -who do you promote and what else do you do?

69

I specialize in the yachting industry from marketing consultancy and online marketing, including content management for social media platforms for regattas, boat builders, boat shows and ocean protection organizations. I support local initiatives such as the ‘Clean the Beach Boot Camp’ (http://www.cleanthebeachbootcamp.com), Disabled Sailing Thailand (http://sailingwithadifference.com) but also international ones like Sea Shepherd (http://www.seashepherdglobal.org). 9) Do you do much sailing anymore and do you plan on buying another boat some day? I sail at least twice a month, mainly as crew for the Sunday Races of the Phuket Yacht Club (http://phuketyachtclub.com). I have no plan to buy a boat right now, I would need a partner to do so and mine abandoned me back in 2012. 10) If you could own any boat, what would be, and if you could sail anywhere where would it be? A catamaran. I quite like the Asia Catamarans cats such as Hurricane. I would only sail the Andaman Sea, so much to see and enjoy.

Gigi arriving in Thailand in 2011 on Minuit.

11) What are your favourite hobbies? I spend 2-4 hours a day learning about online marketing and ocean protection campaigns. I follow the news on most worldwide races such as Vend?e Globe and America’s Cup. The Ocean is my home and passion. 12) Do you have any favourite sailing books or movies? I read all the books by Henry de Monfreid (http:// henrydemonfreid.com) when I was a teenager. During the 13 years of circumnavigation, I must have read at least 100 books about the sea and sailing. I saw all films by Jacques Cousteau and look forward to see “l’Odyss?e” (The Odyssey) the recent film on the biography of Jacques Cousteau (https://reefbuilders.com/2016/05/20/the-odyssey-a-newbiographical-film-about-the-life-of-jacques-cousteau/) 13) Do you have any sailing heroes and if so, why are they special? Henry de Monfreid was my first hero and I then added most adventurers such as Willy de Roos and there are more, the modern heroes such as the sailors participating to the Vend?e Globe and America’s Cup. I believe sailors are really a different kind of people, I love being around them even if they are not heroes.

14) What do you miss most about being on a boat every day; what do you miss least? What I miss most: the sound of the sea What I miss the least: the carrying of food, drinks, etc., from land to the boat. 15) Of all the places you have visited was there a favourite type of seafood that you enjoyed most? Lobster, I just love the fact you can cook it in so many different ways. 16) What place had the friendliest people? Many actually from the Med to the Pacific Ocean and in every single ocean. Arriving to any land by sea makes you meet the most humble and tough people in any nation, the fishermen. I enjoy the fact they can face hardship and be so friendly at the same time. 17) What’s your idea of a perfect day? Getting up with the sun rising on the horizon, on a boat, with the whisper of the sea. Going out sailing and returning in a safe protected place to enjoy the sunset. Being on a boat makes a perfect day, at least a sailing boat, not a speed boat or long-tail, or of course. Gigi in Cartagena, Colombia, 2008.

NEWS Royal Phuket Marina fund first sailing boat designed for people with disabilities to be built in Thailand CGI of what the new SV14 will look like on-the-water. The first, funded by Royal Phuket Marina,is expected to be launched in March 2017. Royal Phuket Marina has committed to fully-fund the first SV14 boat in Thailand – a sail boat designed specifically for the needs of people with disabilities. Part of a global crowdsourcing project, the SV14 will be built by Disabled Sailing Thailand and launched in March 2017. Inspired by the late King of Thailand, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who introduced sailing to the Thai people, Royal Phuket Marina wish to grow boating in Thailand and make sailing easily accessible to all. Speaking about his decision to fund the build of the first SV14 sailing boat in Thailand, Mr. Gulu Lalvani, Chairman of Royal Phuket Marina said, “We’re very excited to be working with Disabled Sailing Thailand on what will be the first ever SV14 built. It will be built here in Thailand and the design means the boat can be easily moved around the country allowing people with disabilities the chance to enjoy sailing – a sport which I love.” The SV14 project was conceived by marine surveyor Mr. Peter Jacops, who upon learning sailing had been dropped from the 2020 Paralympics decided to do something about it.

“While some countries in Asia were offering limited opportunities for disabled sailors, Thailand wasn’t offering anything at all – mainly due to the high price of suitable boats. I sought help from the global sailing community to design and create a cost-effective and easy to build boat, and now with the support from Royal Phuket Marina we will be able to launch the first SV14 very soon.” Designed by Alex Simonis and Marten Voogd of Simonis Voogd Design the SV14 is ideal for both novice and competitive sailing. “The SV14 provides a platform for beginners as well as anyone who may wish to compete at the Olympic level in the future, and design plans are offered free to anyone who wishes to build one and help sailors with disabilities. This is such a great idea, an innovative way to help grow boating for the disabled community in Thailand, and any other country in the world for that matter,” added Mr. Lalvani. As part of their “Grow Boating” initiative which launched last year, Royal Phuket Marina is actively promoting boating in Phuket and Thailand. Working closely with the industry, Royal Phuket Marina has developed a monthly networking platform which takes place on the first Friday of every month at The Speakeasy Yacht Club at Royal Phuket Marina, and attracts key industry players from Thailand and the region to share ideas and help to Grow Boating in Thailand. “Working with Disabled Sailing Thailand to deliver the first SV14 is one of Royal Phuket Marina’s ways to further grow boating in Thailand. Sailing will help people with disabilities to improve their quality of life and we are very excited to be a part of that,” concluded Mr. Lalvani.
