M. Arch Candidate University of British Columbia
JAN LOUIS RODRIGUEZ
To whom it may concern, I am a graduate student at the University of British Columbia in the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program. I am currently seeking a student internship to gain valuable experience in the design field. My education thus far has enabled me to understand design as a purposeful expression of one’s creativity. I believe this understanding of architecture and interior design combined with an aspiration to explore innovative solutions, allows my skill set to be an asset to your firm. The M.Arch program at UBC has allowed for creative processes with a solid conceptual framework that can be actualized through collaborative thinking. My interests lie in design that is dynamic and allows for synergistic interaction between the object/form and user. Architecture has the ability to reconcile abstract theory and functional practice through innovative responses to contemporary societal demands. I feel my interests match the philosophy of your firm because I believe architecture should respond to current technological advances, ecological issues and geopolitical demands of our society. And most importantly improve the quality of life for the users/inhabitants by considering the affects of nature and culture at play where the architectural intervention exists. I am proficient in technical programs such as AutoCAD, Sketchup, Illustrator and Photoshop which I feel can contribute to the ongoing success of your firm. I look forward to the opportunity of discussing my application with you further Sincerely, Jan Louis Rodriguez

VANCOUVER FARMER’S MARKET vertical design studio | year 3 | m.arch | market
education The program of this project has 3 aspects that utilizes the urban market to educate the public about Vancouver’s food system (concept of Farm to Table) by creating spaces that allows the public to see what can be grown in Vancouver, its processing and the retail of these products. Use of demonstration farms and highlighting new technologies will be use to educate the public about various farming processes that are available in Vancouver. The project will attract the a wide demographic by creating an active public walkway, “Social Street.” The Market is envisioned as an attractive place for people to enjoy a positive experience for shopping and leisure. It promotes economic activity for small and medium size business. It does so by supporting the local farming economy providing fresh local produce and various products and incorporates existing vendors that sell at the Vancouver Farmer’s Market. There is a relationship of the market and its local commercial hub on Robson and Granville by virtue of the public seating and direct access to the Social Street from Robson street. The lower building height reinforces culture of the market that connects vendors to the public, educate about urban farming and ultimately create a human-scale experience of the urban market. Idea of “deployable pods” that would be stored at the downtown market, but would become satellite markets when deployed to existing sites around the city that holds farmer markets. The pods become the storage and selling stalls for the vendors and when they are deployed education to their satelite sites, the open spaces become pop up spaces restaurant, games, bar and many other functions. The roofplane was inspired by the piched roofs of traditional markets and using origami folding to create an undulating roof.

RECONCEPTUALIZING THE VANCOUVER ART GALLERY comprehensive design studio | year 2 | m.arch | art gallery
ONE BLACK BOX WITH WHITE SPACES SURROUNG
The culture of the contemporary art gallery is one that is interactive, participatory and aims to create a memorable experience for the user. Our design organizes its programmatic elements in a solid void relationship. We conceptualize the “black box” as solid volumes that spiral around a main core creating the “white spaces” which are the voids in between the spiralling black boxes. The black box is controlled to the AA standard for museum both thermally and in luminance; the white boxes are the A standard galleries (or spaces) that utilize natural daylight via a curtain that uses electrochromic panes of glass to control the sunlight. COLLABORATIVE CONSUMPTION THROUGH URBAN COHOUSING vertical design studio | year 2 | m.arch | housing
Collaborative Consumption and the sharing economy creates a sense of community between diverse groups of people. In thinking about applying this aspect to co-housing it was necessary to provide flexibility in the type of units and in the level of sharing between the different unit types. The app RESERVE was conceptualized to make the Cohousing building less of a private club by allowing the public to book available amenities such as the fitness facilities, short-stay residences, common rooms, daycare, office spaces, or book appointments for the clinic. There is a large public presence in the building with commercial spaces on the ground level and residences on the upper levels. Walking paths and bike paths through the building connect 1st ave to the sea wall. The massing of the building is kept low to only 3 storeys to avoid being an alienating tower, so there is a strong horizontal emphasis. The concepts and ideas of collaborative consumption allows this building to provide 100 rentable units of affordable housing and trendy condos in only 3 stories. The idea of being the “gate” into the site is manifest in allowing circulation to flow through the building. The 15 metre wide “inner street” attempts to create publicness and encourage pedestrians passing by to enter the site. The snake-like form allows for light to penetrate into the ground level commercial area. As well as utilizing the roofs of the ground level for outdoor communal space for the residents above and creating courtyards that are more intimate. There are 3 levels of privacy for the residences in the building to create flexibility in unit types. Communal space is an important programmatic element in this project and wood is used to highlight the common spaces such as kitchens, living room, dining rooms, and outdoor spaces.

HOME LY COMPETITION open competition | year 3 | m.arch | residential
In a conventional home, activity is organized according to its programmatic relationships to each other such as having the dining space by the kitchen. This creates a fixed space, where the relationship of the rooms remain static. In response to the way we live today, spaces need to be more fluid and adaptable for change. In contemporary living, the introduction of a “flux” space accommodates this need. However, flux space is often reduced to an inflexible and inadequate space that cannot adapt to various uses. Our proposal for Homely will aim to explore the possibilities of rethinking “flux” space and how it may affect the re-organization of many programmatic elements of the home. Our definition of flux is “social space” that can be reshaped to respond to the changing needs of the occupants. Typically change in the home takes place every few years, our proposal acknowledges that in the millennial lifestyle, changes occurs more frequently. By mobilizing the bedrooms into modular units, the “flux” social space is left to be defined by the user. The modular units act as dividers to shape and reorganize the space creating a truly free plan. Our proposal encourages communal living and interactions between residents that has been diminished as technology increasingly mediates our everyday lives.
