Introduction

Classifying vehicles on the basis of body types

I

ntroduction of Model T by Henry Ford change people's way to live, work and travel. It transformed the automobile from luxury into a necessity. Gradually automobile industry rocketed to new heights giving consumers many options to consider while buying a new vehicle. A lot of time is spent by consumers on deciding the price range or on deciding what kind of vehicle to purchase that would attract the attention of others. While in reality, one should consider on looking for the type of vehicle that would meet or suit their lifestyles. Before buying, one should carefully take into account the advantages and disadvantages associated with the vehicle by taking stocks of one's needs. For instance, you are planning to buy a new vehicle that is reliable, efficient and able to hold 3 or more passengers comfortably. But instead you go with a sports car. Buying a sports car just because you like it, does not make any sense since it will not fulfill your other essential needs. Over the years, vehicles have undergone a series of changes to build a practically operative one. They went from 2 horse

driven to 200-horse power. Station wagons of the 1970s were succeeded by minivans in the '80s that gave way to SUVs in the '90s. Earlier it was easy for people to choose a vehicle as almost all models were huge, intermediate and compact ones. But today buyers have broader selection of vehicles to consider. Even though the advancement in technology has provided many options to people, but on the other side it has also created confusion among buyers. Before you jumpstart the process of buying a car, just make sure you know everything about that particular body type and the reason why you should consider buying the same. Nowadays, there are many choices, for example if one wants an economical vehicle with style and easy maneuverability, then hatchbacks are to consider. If one wants a family vehicle then one can go for a sedan. Other popular choices while selecting vehicles are SUVs, crossovers, coupé, wagons. So, here we are with this month's magazine on classification of cars on the basis of their body type.

Everybody knows that there exists a sports car, sedan, hatchback, convertible, or any other body type, but when it comes to telling the difference, i.e. a difference between an S U V, a n d c ro s s ov e r o r a hatchback and wagon, one generally have a hard time until and unless he/she is an auto freak. Automakers knowingly made it tricky to classify vehicles, so that they can make their vehicle stand out and advertise it as a new category. For instance, Mercedes market its CLS-Class sedan as a four-door coupé. There is different classification for different vehicles. Vehicles that are classified as SUVs are those that are based on a wagon body style have high ground clearance. Classification of vehicles is done in various ways. The government establishes the classification system for determining a tax amount. Classifying cars on the basis of length is quite easy, but not at all practical as features and configuration of cars doesn't depend upon the car's length. body type. The shape of the body defines the type of the car. For common people it is confusing to decide the car type and in which segment it falls. All car types are not common in all countries, depending upon the region, name for the same vehicle may differ. We see ourselves in a sports car or a convertible, but from a family point these cars are not perfect. Children consider SUVs as cool vehicle, but for a family, sedan or wagon is a vehicle. Convertible Cars

A

ccording to the definition, convertibles are those vehicles that can convert from being open to being completely closed. It is a two-door car with a retractable roof. These vehicles are derived from the earlier phaeton, which was an open vehicle

that does not have glass side windows that may have had removable panels of fabric. They are sometimes called cabriolets or roadsters. Cars introduced at the beginning were all open. The end of the nineteenth century saw the introduction of cars with an enclosed body. Less expensive cars were generally open. During the 1920s, the production of steel bodies increased and as a result, closed cars became available to the average buyer. Gradually, the f u l l y o p e n c a r s disappeared from the m a i n s t re a m m a r ke t a n d convertibles entered in the

mid '20s. American automakers such as Chrysler, American Motors Corporation produced a broad range of convertibles during the 1950s-60s. The production of convertibles became low during early 80s in America. However, globally the

production continued throughout this era. Convertibles generally have limited cargo space when the top is folded down. With the top in place, many convertibles offer much trunk space than their coupé counterparts. During the years, convertibles have gone through many variations; it can be a two-door roadster or a four-seat luxury model. Convertibles can have either hard or soft roof, depending upon the choice of the buyer. Soft roof is made of canvas or similar, while hard roof is made of plastic and metal. When compared, soft roof are generally lighter and cheaper and generally

It not only gives visually pleasing roof, but also provides greater durability, passenger compartment storage security and sometimes visibility. However, retractable hardtop does reduce luggage capacity. The top of these cars require extra maintenance as the Sun and other elements such as bird defecate. Even though convertibles are not family vehicles, neither they do well in bad weather, but still they are fun to drive and to flaunt. Few examples of convertibles are Mazda MX-5, Volkswagen Eos C70, Audi A5 cabriolet.

Coupé Cars

A

coupé is a closed-body style, two-door car with the seating capacity of generally two or four seats placed in 2+2 configuration. That means in the rear there are only two seats contrasting to the typical three, and are also smaller than the average ones. Often sporty in nature, t h e s e cars can be a 2box style or a 3box style. These cars have a conventional trunk or a sloping back with an attached rear cargo hatch that open upward. The term coupé is a long-running body s t yl e i n automobile circles. It was first used for t h e 1 9 t h c e n t u r y carriages, where the rear-facing seats had been eliminated or cut out. The initial coupés had the same structure as that of coupé carriage, i.e. the driver sits at the front in the open with the space behind him for two passengers on one bench seat. During the period of 1950s, open-roof convertibles were referred as drop-head coupés,

but since the 1960s the term has been used entirely to fixed-head models. During the 20th century, the term was used for different close-coupled automobiles. They are generally two doors, however there are fourdoor coupés as well and even three and five door hatchback coupés from many automobile manufacturers. Coupés have different styling features such as frameless doors, with t h e window g l a s s ceiling directly a g a i n s t weather-strip on the main body.

Typically, these kinds of cars have only two doors, hence the term twodoors is generally associated with coupés. Car manufacturers call them coupé, but technically they are two door sedans. L i ke m o s t s e d a n s , coupé have a standard trunk, however unlike their sedan counterparts, they provide less cargo space. On designing front, they have a sleeker and cleaner design. Coupé provides reasonably comfortable seating for front row occupants, but because of limited seating room it is not suitable for families. Some popular coupés in the market are Ford Mustang, Cadillac CTS, Jaguar XK. This term is used by manufacturers in several varieties:

Club coupé: It is a coupé that comes with a larger rear seat. It is nowadays called as a two-door saloon. Business coupé: It is a coupé that does not contain any rear seat or a removable rear seat. Four-door coupé: It is a luxury sedan with classic coupé like proportions. The low roof design reduces back seat passenger access and headroom. The concept of four-door coupé is widely used in Germany, but not widely known in the rest of the world. Opéra coupé: This coupé comes with a high-roof passenger compartment. They sometimes come with occasional seats that are folded for use by children or extra passengers. Sports coupé: It is a coupé with a sloping roof. It is also known as berlinetta.

Crossover Cars

W

hat will one gets on merging the body of a SUV, the chassis of a car and sometimes flexibility of a minivan? The answer is a crossover. Crossovers or Cross Utility Vehicles (CUV) are generally tall wagons and SUVs that are based on a car platform for improved ride, comfort and fuel economy. They come with a front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations. The first true attempt at a crossover vehicle was made by the Willys-Overland Jeepster. To attain a better foothold in the market, Willys builds a passenger car with the styling and roughness of a Jeep. Though the car wasn't a sales success, but it did introduce the basic principle of how a crossover should be like. A direct antecedent of modern crossover is the AMC Eagle. As a precursor of today's crossover models, it looked like a typical station wagon and

was incredibly revolutionary. Like SUVs, crossover provides appealing qualities such as upright seating position, spacious family friendly interiors, high-H point seating, great cargo capacity, high ground clearance, smooth driving, better handling, improved fuel economy. So, in general language, crossovers look like small SUVs, but they drive l i k e regular c a r s . Today, a v a s t variety of SUVs are crossovers. Their features are generally derived from passenger cars, mostly from station wagons and hatchbacks. Most crossovers are monocoque, i.e. if one took off the body, the wheels would fall off. As crossover offers useful attributes of many vehicle types, they are becoming popular among people. Some popular crossovers of today's market are Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.

t is a styling term for describing a car body style that is in general three-box style category. In these cars, there are separate areas for engine, passengers and cargo. Seen from the side, the section forward of the windshield can be viewed as one box, the section with doors and windows is the second, and the third box is the trunk. The roof of notchback is on o n e p l a n e , generally parallel to the ground, the rear window at a sharp angle to the roof, and the trunk lid is also parallel to the ground. 1940s, notchback may apply to number of vehicles. In the early 1960s, notchback design became common among American automakers. All notchbacks are three-box design, though the reverse is not always true. There can be vehicles with three-box design that may have features such as rounded rear decks that outcast them from being considered as notchback. Most notchbacks are generally sedans or coupĂŠs. However, hatchbacks or liftbacks can also be included in this category if they have any horizontal deck lid that brings the vehicle in three-box design. Few examples of notchbacks are Ford Mustang Notchback 289 CU, 62 Porsche Notchback.

Sedan Cars

O

ne of the most popular vehicles available in the market today is a sedan. By definition, the sedan is a car with two full rows of seats and four doors. It is roomy, comfortable car with ample room for five adult passengers including a driver. This feature of sedan to carry almost five passengers from medium to large makes it a popular choice among people. Fourdoor sedans generally have two or three s i d e windows, one on each door (vent windows not counted). The sedan has fixed roof that is full-height up to the rear window. The word 'sedan' is believed to be derived from a southern Italian dialect, sedia that means 'chair'. It was the 1899 Renault Voiturette Type B that first uses this configuration and Speedwell sedan launched in 1911 was the first closed car with the seating capacity of four persons that used the word 'sedan'. Today, almost every automaker keeps a line of sedan style cars in its production as it is the most popular car body type. Sedans manufactured by automakers such as Toyota, Honda are affordable ones, whereas those of luxury brands are quite expensive. This body type of car is quite popular and long-running as it provides a good balance of cost, comfort, efficiency. They offer a

wide range of cost and performance. Various types of Sedans that are available: Fastback Sedans: It is a two-box sedan with a continuous slope from the roof to the base of the decklid, excluding the features of a hatchback. Certain sedans are edging close to being one-box vehicles, where the windshield is steeply raked from the hood/bonnet and t h e r e a r w i n d o w s l o p e s t o w a r d almost the end of the car, leaving just a short rear deck that is part of the trunk lid. Hardtop Sedans: Earlier, sedans used to have a frame around the door windows. Hardtop sedans have a frameless glass door. A complete hardtop sedan does not have a center or "B" pillar for roof support behind the front door as pillarless body style offers greater visibility. Several American Automakers during the 1960s and 70s sold hardtop sedan as sports sedan and they were among top selling body styles during that era. Like hatchback, sedans don't have an extra trunk with the cargo space. They come in various sizes, i.e. they can be as small as a Chevrolet Sonic or can be as large as Rolls-Royce Phantom. Some examples of sedans are Toyota Corolla, Honda Accord, Mercedes E500.

Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs)

T

he SUV is a type of passenger vehicle which possess passenger-carrying and loadpulling abilities with the efficiency of a pick-up truck. In some countries SUVs are known as offro a d e r o r f o u r wheel drive (4WD) or 4x4. It is a belief that SUVs are descendants o f c o m m e rc i a l and military vehicles such as the Jeep and Land Rover. The squarish design in many SUVs is little bit due to the Jeep. Early SUVs were meant to be practical and a means to carry all (passengers or cargos). SUV uses a body on frame design. That means, the body and frame are built separately and then placed together. By the end of the twentieth century, SUVs began to gain popularity. SUVs, large cabins, higher ride height, and safety attract buyers towards them. These vehicles have a separate engine area, although passenger and luggage area are enclosed together. Some compact SUVs even offers decent gas mileage. To be precise, if one has a big family, or carry large loads of cargo usually, then the ideal vehicle to go with is an SUV.

Few examples of SUVs are Toyota Land Cruiser, Dodge Durango, Land Rover Range Rover.

Mini SUV: It is a class of small SUVs. The term comprises any vehicle that is smaller than a compact SUV. Compact SUV: It is an another class of smaller SUVs that have less cargo and passenger space, and often comes with smaller engines hence provides better f u e l e c o n o m y. The term is frequently used for crossover SUV. Mid-size SUV: A mid-size SUV is a class of mediumsize SUVs whose size usually falls between that of a full-size and a compact SUV. This term is commonly used only in North America, as in other regions full size and midsize SUVs are considered similar. Full-size SUV: A full-size SUV is a class of large-size SUVs whose size is larger than midsize SUVs. In comparison to midsize SUVs they have greater cargo and passenger space and are usually higher in safety aspects than their smaller counterparts.

Station Wagon

S

tation wagon, also known as an estate or only wagon, is a body style which has an interior that is extended to the back, and comes usually with an extra seat or luggage compartment. These cars are generally referred as a station wagon and wagon across the world, but in English speaking countries (except in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) they are known as an estate. Derived from a horse-drawn vehicle, the wagon name is used for cars that display a sharp level of utility. These vehicles were very popular among families during the 1950s through the '70s. The first station wagons were the outcome of the era of train travel. They were originally called "depot hacks" because they worked around train depots as hacks. Earlier station wagons evolved from trucks and were viewed as commercial vehicles. Eventually, the car companies began building their own station wagons. Star (a division of Durant Motors) was the first car company to offer a factory-built station wagon. Typically, wagons are capable of holding six or nine passengers. In six seating wagon, there are seating for three passengers in the front and for t h re e p a s s e n g e r s i n t h e re a r . W h i l e t o

accommodate nine passengers, a third bench seat is placed in the rear cargo area. An easy way to determine whether the car is a wagon or not is that the roof line of a wagon continues past the rear doors. A wagon o ff e r s everything from all-wheel drive, a roomy interior, rugged off-road ground clearance, abundant technology, to turbo-diesel torque and efficiency. Occasionally this term is used to refer to passenger vans. Some popular examples of station wagons are Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen, Ford Flex, Subaru Outback.

marketed as "halo" vehicles. Production of supercars is always limited. Generally, around 5000 cars are produced, while in some cases the production runs as low as 100. The history of supercar goes b a c k when an advertise ment for t h e Ensign Six, a 6.7L high-performance car similar to the Bentley Speed Six, appeared in 'The Times' dated 11th November, 1920 with the phrase- "If you are interested in a supercar, you cannot afford to ignore the claims of the Ensign 6." Even the Oxford English Dictionary has made use of the word in an advertisement in 'The Motor' on November 3, 1920 for an unnamed car, "The Supreme development of the British super-car." During the 1950s and the '60s, performances of cars progressed. In 1954, Mercedes launched 300 SL 'Gull Wing' that was the first supercar to cross the 150mph mark. In 1957, Chevrolet with the launch of Chevrolet Corvette made an impression in the supercar industry. The car could reach 60mph in less than 6 seconds. Gradually other automakers such as Jaguar, Lamborghini, Maserati, Ferrari also came up with supercars to satisfy needs of customers. Some popular examples of supercars from these automakers are Ferrari 458 Italia, Audi R8 GT, Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera.
