Party of the Year Form 6 students got swag.

According to Wikipedia, Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice towards a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules and shuffleboard. Curling was introduced to students in YPICALLMC early this year and already, the sport has made a lot of students curious. We don’t have sheets of ice in our school but it doesn’t mean we can’t play curling. It looks easy to play and the rules are simple but it takes skills, patience and accuracy to be able to score high in the sport. Our players have already won in several competitions and we will keep bringing home the bacon as we continue to build a stronger team. NICE TO KNOW... “bring home the bacon” (Idiom) To achieve success.

The Value of Discipline For most Form 1 students, the Passing Out Parade marks the end of months of training and marching. Some students, however, recognize the importance of the uniform groups because it is part of their learning experience in YPICALLMC. Kishan (2B, Scouts) and Daniyal (2B, Sea Cadets) were among those who received recognition in the Passing Out Parade and they are both considering to stay for another year in their group. “It was hard but I enjoyed the experience because I value loyalty and team work,” Kishan explained in an interview with Spring. “I agree,” Daniyal chimed in saying that discipline is important in a student’s

life. He said that in the uniform groups, students learn the value of discipline and apply it in their daily life. In school, we are expected to follow rules. Simple procedures like queuing up during assembly or cleaning up your own table during recess should come naturally from a well-disciplined student without needing to be reminded. This year’s Passing Out Parade, held on 31 May 2016, was officiated by Inspector Poon Chung Kei of the Hong Kong Police Force--Tuen Mun District. He was pleased with the students’ performance.

Marching On Ms Clara goes up the stage, plays the piano and her students sing their last performance in school—“Those Were the Days”. Indeed, on this Speech Day, the whole school year felt like mere days because time flies fast. The graduating class of 2016 composed of 44 students finished their secondary education with impressive achievement. The Principal, Ms Tang, teachers and schoolmates have expressed high regard for this year’s graduating batch. Aside from being diligent in studies, the graduates have displayed admirable qualities of a student. They were helpful to teachers and friendly to the lower form students. They truly embody what it means to be a YPICALLMC student—one that values good education and excellent behaviour. The Form 5 students have big shoes to fill this coming school year. Meanwhile, awardees from the lower forms proved that they, too, can be successful in studies. The programme, held on 20 May 2016, came to a close with bittersweet goodbyes from the Form 6 students as they march on to different paths. On one hand, we don’t want such an excellent batch to leave the school but on the other hand, we want them to continue their success and bring pride to YPICA Lee Lim Ming College. NICE TO KNOW... “have big shoes to fill” (Idiom) When a job that was done by a great person will now be done by someone new.

Good news doesn’t end on Speech Day. Six Form 6 students have proven that they are the best among the rest when it comes to the HKDSE and are excited to continue their studies in university. All of Form 6 students studied hard for the recently concluded test. However, only those with high marks can proceed to higher education. Every year YPICALLMC produces top graduates who are eligible for university study. This year, the number continues to increase. Mok Wai Kwong (6A), Aleena Ashraf (6C), Bibi Kainat (6C), Rai Abin (6C), Rai Mark Jeprie (6C), and Gurung Sushmita (6C) were all pleased with the results. “I was nervous but also a bit

6

excited on the day of the exam. I was studying more the night before the exam but I got more confused so I decided to stop cramming. I have revised enough for several weeks. Everyone was in a similar situation anyway so I put on a smile and answered the exam calmly. At the end of the day, what’s important is that you believe in yourself that you can do it,” Mark shared as he recalled his experience. Kainat also did well in the exam but she remembers that her nerves almost got the best of her. “HKDSE was a

nerve-wracking experience for me because I felt a lot of pressure. However, I think the pressure worked as the driving force which pushed me to work harder and achieve good results,” Kainat said in an interview with Spring. The Principal, Ms Tang and teachers have all been supportive not only to the magic six but also to the rest of the Form 6 students. Their success is a reflection of the continued efforts of the YPICALLMC family to provide the best education to students.

School year 2015-2016 is now over but there’s a lot of hope for the future. YPICALLMC students explored the world of work to find inspiration in different career opportunities around Hong Kong. The YPICALLMC Careers Team has organized the trips to help students understand their aptitude, strengths and even weaknesses. Moreover, the career-related experience can help develop a student’s career aspirations. The students enjoyed the trips which were informative and immersive. Some of the students were excited to speculate about their future careers in hopes that they can someday contribute to the Hong Kong workforce with good work ethics and useful skills.

Road trips can be tiring but it is mostly fun especially if you play by the rules. Luckily, in the recent Zhongshan-Shunde Study Tour, the 2-day road trip was enjoyable because our students followed these 4 simple Road Trip Rules.

Go Spend a Day in a Farm Tucked in the plains of Pat Heung is the lovely The Little Garden Farm that produces the now famous Marigold tea in Hong Kong. Lawrence (6A) visited the tea farm last winter and experienced first-hand how it is to live in a modern-day farm. “I experienced harvesting tea leaves and making pickled flowers when we visited the farm,” Lawrence shared in an interview with Spring. He said that he enjoyed the experience and that the atmosphere was very peaceful unlike the busy city life. Cynthia Wong, owner of TLG Farm, created her vision of a quaint countryside life full of vibrant flowers and a bountiful harvest. She left a promising career in media to pursue a livelihood that is fast disappearing from Hong Kong’s landscape. Ms Wong appreciates students who take interest in learning farming because it gives her hope that maybe farming can still thrive in Hong Kong’s countryside. “I think local farming is still important because it gives our village residents a chance to earn as well as share their produce,” Lawrence said adding that we can also support these farmers by choosing to buy locally grown products.

Go Learn Football from the Experts Pratik (5C) has always been interested in football. He looks up to the football greats like most students but does not want to just sit and daydream of becoming a professional football player. He goes out and practices several times a week. “Being part of the school football team is a good opportunity for me to improve my skills in football,” Pratik shared with Spring adding that part of their training is now handled by the Real Madrid Clinic. “We learn from professional athletes who have played in prestigious clubs abroad so the training they give us is really helpful for me,” Pratik said. On his free time, Pratik admittedly plays computer games but he mostly plays football which shows that it’s really his passion. “I play computer games like a regular kid but it is also important to go out, play and practise my skills while I am still young and strong,” he added. Pratik was recently interviewed by Apple News Daily for his involvement in the Clinic and while still a student, he is already inspiring other aspiring athletes to work hard for their dreams.

Pokemon Go is a worldwide phenomenon and the craze has reached Hong Kong. While the game is undeniably fun to play, we’re here to remind you that the time and energy you use to play the game could be used in other meaningful activities this school year. Students often dream of being successful in life but instead of using their youth in learning different skills, they are often distracted by new technology, the latest gadgets or the coolest games. We have gathered some inspiring stories from students who believe that plugging out from the virtual world can still be fun.

Go Make a Film Drug abuse is a known problem in our community today. More and more teenagers are tricked into thinking that taking drugs is cool but they don’t know the harmful effects of drugs until it is too late. That is why more effort is needed to spread the information about the dangers of drug abuse. Ajmal (6C) participated in a micro-film competition to help spread the word against drugs. His 3-minute short film showed the dangers of drugs and how teenagers can soon waste their lives with drug abuse. “As an aspiring director, it is important for me to always practise my passion of making films,” Ajmal explained saying that he has been making Vines and YouTube videos for months now. He dreams of becoming a popular director one day and make films just like the Hindi movies that he loves to watch. He added that kids should do something more productive with their time. Ajmal won 1st Runner Up in the micro-film competition for his entry. “I did not put in my whole effort into it,” he said hinting on a bigger win if he had spent more time in making the film. He stressed that it will take hard work but what is important is that you are creating something for a good cause.

Go Learn Martial Arts Every special event in our school, we call on the Martial Arts Club to awe us with their electrifying Dragon Dance routines. They always know how to please the crowd but we often forget that behind the Dragon costumes, members of the Martial Arts Club have to stay strong throughout each gruelling performance. Members of the club joined because they are really interested in learning the movements in martial arts. “I think it is important to keep passing on this skill because this is part of our culture,” the martial arts master Chiu Chi Man, Jimmy said adding that kids today have so many options on things to do that it’s hard to convince them to join the club. “Martial Arts Club has made me stronger and more focused on my studies,” one member said adding that he feels that his time spent in learning the routines is worth the while. Almost all of the members are graduating soon and they hope that Form 1 or Form 2 students would consider joining the club. “It is very cool to be part of this club because we can compete with other clubs in Hong Kong,” another member said. This year, the team is in the Top 6 in Hong Kong and they are determined to be the champion before they graduate. Although the team still has a hard road to the top, they are happy because they are able to share this colourful part of Chinese culture with everyone.

Much as we enjoy playing computer games, we should keep in mind that there are many more worthwhile activities than can enrich our character. Take the opportunity to spend time with your friends in the real world and hone a skill or explore a hobby. There’s a world of possibilities waiting for you outside the digital landscape. Go catch your dreams.

Proudly Multicultural There are 11 different nationalities in YPICALLMC. Each year, we get to know more about the cultures of our friends and classmates through cultural exchange activities. With the theme “East Meets West”, the Cultural Day highlights the colourful exchange of cultures across nations. We get the chance to experience the fascinating traditions that our friends grew up with from songs to dances and even food. This year’s Cultural Day was especially meaningful because of special productions like the Chinese Opera, Bollywood Dance and an extraoridnary dance tribute to refugees. YPICALLMC will continue to celebrate this event because our school is an international school and we are proudly multicultural.

NICE TO KNOW... Bollywood Loosely refers to the film industry in India and one of the biggest film industries in the world. In 2014, Bollywood topped worldwide film production with close to 2,000 films compared to USA’s 800 films.
