he coronavirus known as T CoViD-19 has been recently declared by the World Health
Organization (WHO) as a global pandemic. WHO defines pandemic as a worldwide spread of a new disease for which most people do not have immunity. One of the measures that the Hong Kong government has done to minimize the spread of the virus is to suspend classes. Our Information Technology Expert, Mr Peter Chan is well-prepared for such a scenario and has helped provide solutions to move all classroom learning online. This school year has been rocked by some unusual difficulties, most recent of which is the spread of the coronavirus. However, we, at YPICA Lee Lim Ming College, are always ready to face any challenge with a positive attitude. During the class suspension period students have a lot of downtime that should be spent for learning, so how do we achieve the goal of "suspending classes without suspending learning"? Learning at home cannot fully replace classroom learning. However, we can make good use of diverse online and electronic resources so that students can continue their studies at home during the class suspension period. Here, I would like to introduce some of the eLearning resources that we are currently using in different classes, depending on their needs. Zoom (http://zoom.us) Put simply, Zoom is like the video chat for learning. Zoom unifies cloud video conferencing, simple online meetings, and cross platform group chat into one easy-to-use application. With few technical problems and fair pricing, Zoom is considered as one of the best options for online learning. Microsoft Teams (http://team.microsoft.com) Microsoft Teams is Microsoft's challenger to Google Drive. This powerful education tool set promises better learning outcomes and provides teachers with time-saving tools for planning and assignments. Students get to build the skills they need for success with tools and apps that improve creativity, communication, and collaboration, empowering them in their online learning. However, this does not come cheap. In order to use the administor-level service, the users must have the Office 365 license. Google Classroom (http://classroom.google.com) Enter Google Classroom, a robust tool in the G Suite for Education. It helps teachers create and organize assignments quickly, provide feedback efficiently, and easily communicate with their classes. You can easily integrate the Google resources and tools in the Google Classroom like Google Docs, Google Slides, and even Google Drive. Best of all, these are all free to use! Google Forms (http://google.com/forms) Although Google Forms can be integrated into Google Classroom, the feature can stand on its own as a teaching tool. Teachers can quickly create accessible worksheets, quizzes and tests using Google Forms. The forms are compatible across all devices like PCs, Mac Computers, Android, and iOS devices. It comes with a complete set of form features from dropdown menus to linear scales. The answer key feature allows teachers to automatically mark and grade tests.

Besides these tools we can use, we must remember that the key to success is always the self-discipline. Take advantage of the technology but do not forget to read more and practise more because only we can help ourselves.

even years ago, YPICA Lee Lim Ming College began its English Stream to be more inclusive to ethnic minority students. It was a challenge in the beginning, reworking the curriculum to fit the learning needs of non-Chinese speaking students. However, having a multi-cultural educational institution, that uses English as a medium of instruction, opened more ways of learning for all our students. From Cultural Day to Study Tours abroad, YPICA suddenly became an exciting college that attracted clever, creative, confident, and competitive students. After seven years, we are now starting to hear some good news from our first YPICA non-Chinese graduates. Iccha Thapa and Bishal Thapa have visited us recently and shared how YPICA became instrumental in their budding careers in the aviation industry. “When I was still in secondary school, I had already appreciated the many activities that YPICA had planned for us,” Iccha recalled, referring to the variety of learning opportunities in different subject areas which teachers had introduced to them. “Yes, especially the one for our Applied Learning, that was how we got interested in aviation in the first place,” Bishal agreed. Both Iccha and Bishal were part of the Applied Learning course offered to senior secondary students in YPICA. Iccha explained that there were a few of them who joined the class which was taught by Principal Kwok. “The good thing about it was that the ApL was actually credited to our studies. In fact, it was one of the reasons why we got accepted in university,” Iccha added. Bishal finished Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours in Aviation Management and Logistics while Iccha finished Bachelor of Science with Honours in Aviation Operation and Systems. They are both in the process of applying for jobs and it is only a matter of time before our outstanding alumni go places.

T
he school year kicked off with a big event, the 33rd Sports Day, held last 24 September 2019. Everyone was excited and, perhaps, a bit worried that with only a few weeks to prepare, they might not be able to perform well. However, team spirit from all four
houses was high and, coupled with great weather, the track and field competitors performed up to the best of their abilities. Even the cheerdancing competition was a blast despite their limited time to practice. The will to win was stronger
in White House and they ruled again this year, finishing with 620 points and leaving the three other houses vying for the runner-up spot. Scan the QR Codes on this page to watch videos from the event.

COVER STORY
B
efore the dreaded coronavirus CoViD-19 became such a nuisance to travellers, our school organized a study tour to southwestern China in the province of Sichuan. Known for its spicy cuisine, Sichuan is home to the giant pandas. Sichuanese operas, famous for its fire-breathing performances, add to the allure of
6
this captivating province, making it a truly red-hot destination. Our students explored Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan, and other neighbouring locations where they visited temples, museums, and the riverside town of Huanglongxi. Sichuan itself contains a part of the famous Yangtze, Asia’s
longest river and while our explorers only got to see Fuhe River, this water system connects to Yangtze via the Min River. Although travelling to China might not be a good idea these days due to the ongoing threat of the coronavirus, the students will always have fond memories of their time in Sichuan as these photos, sans masks, show.

very year, Lee’s Got Talent promises to be a show full of surprises. Last December 2019, LGT did it again, proving once and for all that this show is where the most fabulous young stars of YPICA perform to showcase their talents. The dedication that our students give to perfecting their skills in singing or dancing is remarkable, which is why the judges always have a hard time

choosing the winner. It is a tough job especially when the audience also has favourites. Nicole Alexis Pascual (6B) emerged as the winner of the two-day show which featured more than a dozen performances. Nicole’s masterful rendition of Adele’s “When We Were Young” was both heartfelt and poignant as she is set to graduate this school year. When asked by judges whether she had done anything differently this year to secure a spot, Nicole humbly replied that her goal was only to perform one last time on the YPICA stage. Christ Saru (5B) waited for years to drum up the courage needed to perform solo on LGT. Taking the first runner-up spot, Christ wowed everyone when he appeared on stage wearing a platinum blonde
wig and big sunglasses. He naturally has the energy and charisma of a young pop star and if he does make it in the field of entertainment one day, we can proudly say that he made his debut here in our school hall. Representatives from Form 6C took the second runner-up and fan favourite trophies with their fun dance medley performance. From start to finish, theirs was the only performance with the loudest applause from the audience. Lee’s Got Talent has upped the bar again. Next year, we will see more surprises, so if you are thinking of joining, we suggest that you start practising right now! Scan the QR codes on this page to watch highlights of Lee’s Got Talent 2019.

The Warmth of Family
un, food, and, most importantly, family were the day’s goals during the Two Homes, One Family barbecue picnic held last 1 December 2019 at Chung Pui Barbecue Site along Bride’s Pool Road in Shuen Wan. Parents, students, and teachers, led by Principal Kwok, were greeted with a magnificent view of the
10
adjacent Plover Cove Country Park. The day itself was cool and sunny, making it perfect for playing some games. By noon, it was time to refuel hungry tummies with a wide selection of BBQ. Some families brought their own food which was more than enough to share with everyone.
After lunch, YPICA’s big family gathered again to play BINGO and raffle off some prizes in the Lucky Draw. The following weeks were going to be much cooler, but the warmth experienced on our Two Homes, One Family picnic would last throughout the cold winter months.

ihilium started out when the After Dark Horror Short Film Competition was happening. My friends and I were brainstorming ideas for our own horror movie. We settled on a story about a curious student lingering on the Dark Web. During scriptwriting, we changed the story, from the Dark Web to a fictional website called Nihilium, which is the Latin word for "Nothing". We stuck with a story that was simple and easy to execute while allowing us to take advantage of multiple locations. The Hacker was a character we created as a sort of antagonist in the story. We didn't really have an idea or concept on what he would look like. We needed a character that was intimidating and dangerous so, we simply grabbed whatever we had and used it. The original idea was that, after the main character checked out the website, the dark figure or "The Hacker” would appear at the main character’s place and terrorize him. The main character would then sleep over at a friend’s place for a while before returning to his own flat only to find out that the dreaded Hacker would still be there. Then, there would have been a news coverage about the main character going missing, but we thought that it was all too ambitious for the budget and schedule that were available to us. Eric (5B) and I worked on the screenplay. We wrote a loose script so that
our actors could improvise. Most, if not all, of the jokes in the movie were done on-the-spot or came about during the postproduction stage. We didn't really have a full script when filming began. New pages and scenes were written the day before the shooting of the scene. Shots and camera angles were staged on the fly. Shooting took about two weeks in total. We decided we were going to go to shoot on-location only once so, we made sure to cover whatever we can at that location. For example, since there were two scenes set in Ginza, instead of going there a second time we filmed both scenes on the same day but shot them at different areas to make it look a bit different. The house was filmed at a friend's flat and the scenes there were shot in two days. The ending was a day-for-night-shot which is a scene filmed during the day but edited and manipulated to look like night. The school scenes, and everything else all the way to the ending scenes, were all shot after school in the same afternoon. We initially decided to have the film lean more toward horror but when editing came around, our editor, Eric, edited the film to be more horrorcomedy. We were originally going to edit the film together, but my computer was unavailable at the time so, we had to use his computer and editing software to complete the film.

During shooting, we wanted to have a post-credit sequence. After the credits, "The Hacker” was supposed to kidnap the main character and there would've been a news report about the main character going missing. We cut it due to the time length exceeding five minutes. It would've been both difficult and time-consuming. Fun fact: Eric submitted the final cut with the filename “Do_Not_Delete”. Thinking that this was the title, Filmmaking Club announced it on stage during the awarding of the trophies instead of the real title “Nihilium”.
