480 Wilson Street is located within a fifteen minute walk of Redfern Station, Newtown, Broadway Shopping Centre and the University of Sydney. The proximity of the site to the Central Business District provides it with an excellent connection to Greater Sydney and the wider world. The site currently faces Wilson Street, towards the southern end of the property. This is where the public areas of the home, such as the living room and kitchen, are based. The northern end of the property, which faces Wilson Lane, is occupied by a large, modern garage which disconnects the site from the laneway and the public reserve that occupies the block between Wilson Lane and Abercrombie Street. The site is located within one of the most dense, sought-after locations in Sydney. The current terrace that occupies the site fails to provide its residents with the space, circulation and sunlight that the site has the potential for. It is also lacking the infrastructure that will become crucial as the twenty-first century progresses.

The composition of varied and contradictory objects that have been arranged to create harmonious forms has been the major influence throughout this project. The repetition of a single object or material, joined together by only one or two objects or materials, to create an aesthetically pleasing form has been a major influence on the direction of this project. Similarly, the organisation of chaos, articulated in the deconstruction of a Braun shaver, has had an equally major impact on the decisions about form and location of the most defining objects and features in this project. The decision to use as few materials as possible in this project, and namely the use of grey, grade 1 concrete for most of the project, creates a language that differentiates the building from its surrounds without detracting for the existing language and pattern that has defined its neighbourhood.

Some of the most complex objects, whose beautifully harmonious designs often go unnoticed, are scattered throughout our daily lives. It is often only when an object malfunctions or underperforms that its design is called into question. It is here where the assemblage of various parts in relation to a whole is investigated. To create harmony and tranquility is to master chaos. To go unnoticed requires a sincere assembly of tamed objects, each as equally important as the other.

CURRENT FLOOR PLAN

The current floor plan of 480 Wilson Street has several issues that prevent the home from providing the space and opportunities for its current and future residents. Based upon a typical terrace design, the house restricts its occupants through its use of small rooms that deny the opportunity for shared space. Circulation is also a major issue that has resulted due to the current floor plan. Throughout the house, lines of sight, that have a large impact both on aesthetic and spatial experiences, are interrupted by walls, doors, and stairs. Utilities such as the kitchen, bathroom and toilet are separated from the living area. The dining room is also separated from the living room. This reduces the opportunity for social interaction and collaboration that defines a home.
