Hello there, I’m Jasmine and I design for print and web

About Me I am a motivated individual with a passion for all things design. I work well within a team or on my own to undergo a design brief. I’m charismatic and enthusiastic in my practice and enjoy tackling the more challenging briefs that test my abilities as a designer. I thrive in both print and web design, but I’m not afraid to step outside my comfort zone to do something different. I’m people friendly and can strike up a conversation with anyone. I also take pride in the work that I produce and approach every brief with determination and thorough research into existing designs. I have many influences from music, films, television, novels and the places I have visited.

Deadlines are not an issue, as I meet every single one of them on time, as I have good time management skills. Outside of Graphic Design, I enjoy a good cup of coffee, a film, television show or a good book. I also enjoy poi spinning and the occasional juggle when time allows. Being part of a Circus Skills Society at university has helped me learn new things and gain confidence in performing and teaching my skill to others. In the past I have been a girl guide, learning crafts and survival skills, as well as being a piano player, guitarist and a horse rider. I enjoy learning new things while improving on my own skills, adapting to new methods and approaches. I believe in enjoying my practice and finding a solution through experimentation and producing many outcomes before the final design.

Here are some samples of my work 2013 – 16

YCN Awards Winner

New Coffee Innovation Taylors of Harrogate challenged a brief, to invent a brand new coffee innovation to attract a younger audience, of 16 – 25 year olds, to drinking their coffee. Staying away from capsules and pods, it had to be something different to what they already have.

Was it rich, medium or light?

What could be mixed with coffee to make it taste sweeter or smoother? I looked back to my childhood where I saw so many sweets, such as fudge, toffees, candy floss and pop corn at festivals and in the cinema. As well Through some thorough research into as fairgrounds and circus tents being the company and how coffee was made I an influence, I looked at the colours began sketching and brainstorming ideas and stripes that were seen. This also and drinking alot of coffee. resembles the flavours I chose and the Flavour was the most important theme I imagery. Toffee Apple, Candy Floss came accross. and Popcorn were my innovation for this brief. I was lucky to win a commendation for my work and the overall award.

A Life’s Work The International Society of Typographic Designers, is a world wide competition that focuses on the use of typography. The brief titled ‘A Life’s Work’ was a challenge to celebrate the life’s work of Adrian Frutiger, who passed in 2015. My approach is a circular book that looks into his life, some of his typefaces and symbol designs. Also featured in this book, are some of the technologies he used, such as the Lumitype Photon and Digital Typesetting. I kept my typography simple and made use of the circular format with large display type and imagery, as well as the use of colour to relate back to Switzerland where Frutiger is from.

This project challenged me in more ways than I could imagine. Firstly, with my typography and layout skills, but secondly, the format is a little different to the usual square or rectangles. Being circular proved it’s test and had it’s technical issues which I over came through trial and error and lots of masking tape.

Identity and Branding

AHOY Web Design ‘Ahoy’ was a group project, for an Identity and Branding unit. We were tasked to form our own design studio and produce all the promotional materials. This included a logo, business cards, look book, letterheads and a website. Plus any extras we might need.

Our logo is themed from the word ‘Ahoy’ which is a greeting, but also a way to flag down a near by ship. Our logo mark is based from a life buoy symbol, which is our way of saving your life with our design services. We each had different tasks in the group, mine was to come up

with the website. Having some knowledge in HTML and CSS, I took up this opportunity to improve my knowledge base. This is a parrallex Scrolling site, with a ‘pull to inflate’ tab to return to top, as well as smooth scrool jquery, for the menu buttons and a ligthbox jquery for the images in our gallery.

Dissertation Outcome

Going Round in Circles ‘Going Round in Circles’ is my dissertation outcome, on the ‘Evocative Natures of Vinyl Records, and How they Create an Experience’. This included self produced photography, quotes from designers and an interview with a fellow course mate. The main book is of the 12 inch record size and the interview book in a smaller 7 inch size. Also included is a double sided A2 poster. The use of imagery and

letterpress were to enhance an experience, within the book itself. The focus being on the eovcative side of Vinyl. The beauty, age, timelessness and vibrance of the covers themselves and records were an important focus. I haven’t owned nor listened to vinyls myself, but I am interested in music and album covers. So the larger format was more of a curiosity as to why they are also still popular today.

Major Project, in Graphic Design

Familiar Phrases & their Nautical Origins Familiar Phrases and their Nautical Origins, is a project showcasing certain phrases that we use today, their connotations and their origins. The postcards, have the details of where the word originated and how it was used on the reverse. Each print was originally screenprinted, and then turned digital to make it easier for mass production AND more information to be used.

The bright colours, materials and typography all contribute to the feel of seafairing. The logo was hand written, to then be screen printed onto a wooden box and canvas for the packaging. Rope was also used, as a way to bind the packaging together, as well as adding details to the box later on.
