As an aspiring landscape architect, I am driven by a passion for equitable and compassionate design My experiences visiting my family abroad, who are mostly immigrants, have exposed me to the difficulties marginalized communities face in tropical coastal cities. Through design, I aim to create spaces that not only provide safety and security, but also serve as healing environments, especially for communities suffering from the effects of urban growth. I am committed to using my skills and knowledge to promote the survival and well-being of these communities, both domestically and globally.

ATHENS 2042

Our team has analyzed potential long-term challenges and stressors affecting the site and Athens in 2042. We aim to create a sustainable design that resolves issues such as stormwater management and greenspace deficiencies while enhancing visitor experience. Using our expertise, we’ll implement innovative solutions, recognizing these concerns are widespread and require a comprehensive approach.

A conventional greenspace design involves the placement of isolated spaces within a grid-like pattern, often along blocks or roads in urban areas. This approach results in a fragmented distribution of green areas within the built environment.

While a courtyard design, can provide a private and secluded environment, it also limits public access to the greenspace. This type of design results in a segregated green space that is not readily available for community use

conventional design courtyard design opposite design

In order to foster a greener future for Athens, it is crucial to design greenspaces in a way that invites people in. One effective approach is to place greenspaces along the perimeter. This type of design not only increases the amount of green space available but also promotes community use.

COMMERCIAL MIXED USE

MULTI-FAMILY

The exterior greenspace surrounding the site serves as our passive space, designed to accommodate pedestrian and bicycle pathways. Our team has focused on two main areas: the zen garden and sponge park. The zen garden features open spaces, rocks for leisure, and walking paths for visitors. Meanwhile, the sponge park includes walking paths surrounding the ponds, providing both leisure and efficient stormwater management.

The central active space was strategically located to best serve the shoppers and residents of the site. Key features include a plaza for art installations and easy movement between buildings. Other areas of interest include the mixed-use plaza and playground, separated by grassy fields that can also serve as a sound block for the single-family housing unit. Additionally, the topography of these fields allows for flooding in case of extreme weather events.

ZEN GARDEN

The zen garden includes rock features, grassy spaces, and walking paths for visitors and residents to enjoy. The plantings offer privacy for the inner part of the garden, while the outer walking paths and topography provide a view for people outside of the site.

PLAYGROUND

The playground is strategically located between the commercial and single-family areas, catering to families visiting the commercial area and residents of the singlefamily units. Our design includes play spaces for a range of ages and abilities, with slides integrated into the topography for older children and adults.

sponge park

The sponge parks serve as one of the stormwater management features on the site, located in the low point to allow for water to be drained there. The ponds are designed with bridges to enhance their aesthetic value and serve as a viewpoint for visitors rather than a nuisance.

planting design through the seasons

UGA OFFICE OF GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT

When creating planting designs, it is important to take into account the different seasons. By utilizing trees, the hard edges of the building can be softened to match the arches around the doors and windows. Landscaping has the ability to transform a mediocre building into a great one. In this project, I was able to explore the use of digital mediums like iPad or Photoshop to recreate a hand-drawn graphic look.

ENTERTAINMENT SPACE EXTENSION

Spring 2022

Athens, GA

SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL

In contrast to designing for a larger group, designing for a single person allows for more attention to detail in the space. I created a space for my aunt. The yard was designed to be a versatile area that could be used as an extension of the house or as a hosting space in its own right.

deck

KEY bioswale

The deck serves as the primary mingling area, as it is the first space guests will encounter. The outdoor kitchen, which is sheltered by the roof, creates a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors, resulting in a unified space.

The bioswale flows through the planting, while also connecting to the pond. This pond serves as a visual element, and the water can be drained when necessary.

gazebo

The gazebo serves as a more secluded area within the yard, providing a private space for guests who desire a more intimate setting.

The arrangement and initial scattering of paths is designed to reflect the flow of large gatherings. At first, guests tend to mingle in larger groups. As the event progresses, some people may move to smaller, more private conversations. The path system accommodates both types of movement, allowing for a natural and intuitive flow throughout the space.

FOOD DESERT ANALYSIS

To create a food insecurity or food desert map in Philadelphia, PA, I considered two primary factors: walking distance to food locations and demographic data. Food deserts are areas with limited access to healthy food, which can lead to health problems and may be indicative of systemic inequality.

Pedestrian and Bike Accidents

VISION ZERO

ATHENS. GA

“Vision Zero” is a concept that aims for zero pedestrian, cyclist, and vehicular fatalities resulting from poor traffic design. By analyzing two critical factors: the location of bus stops without sidewalks and the areas with the highest incidence of pedestrian and cyclist accidents, I identified three key areas of concern in Athens, GA. From there, I focused on one particular area that showed the most concerning characteristics and further analyzed it for areas of opportunities.

EAST ATHENS COMMUNITY CENTER ANALYSIS

KEY

There is no direct connection between Walker Park and Dudley Park, which creates a challenge for pedestrians and bicyclists. However, the implementation of a greenway corridor could potentially provide a solution by providing a safe and accessible pathway for these groups to travel between the parks while avoiding the road entirely.

The two roads connecting cars to the east Athens community center greatly limit pedestrian and bicyclist accessibility in areas with a higher African American population. Redesigning these corridors can significantly increase accessibility to the community center and nearby parks.

The Iron Triangle is situated within this triangular region. Though there has been some progress in the area, it is crucial to prioritize designing a pedestrian-friendly and well-planned space for the public housing projects. It’s also important to keep in mind and implement design guidelines and policies to prevent gentrification.

THAI RESORT

Through graphic exploration, I am able to take a base sketchup model, heavily manipulate it, and make it my own. Starting off with a sketchup base, I created a resort located in Thailand. The first image is a more illustrative vector style graphic.

The first aerial view emphasizes the use of foreground, middle ground, and background, with the pool and gazebos in the foreground, the massage area in the middle ground, and the carefully arranged background elements directing the viewer’s attention to the pool area.

The purpose of this view is to highlight the serene ambiance of the traditional Thai massage area. I deliberately played with lighting to emphasize the brightness and to showcase how this space offers a comfortable shade. The view also gives a glimpse of the ocean.

This eye-level view of the pool area highlights the key features of the site, including the individual pool gazebos and the massage area, which surround the pool and create an intimate atmosphere.
