Up In Smoke by Eastword News Editor By Van Mitchell GiGi Miskovsky wanted to quit smoking and had tried a variety of methods, but nothing worked. That is until she discovered electronic cigarettes. “I have been a nurse for 20-plus years and I really did want to quit smoking for some time,” Miskovsky said. “I tried other means of quitting and they just weren't effective. I tried the patch, the gum, Zyban and none of those methods worked for me. About three years ago I ordered an e-cigarette online and I did quit with that. I never smoked another cigarette after that.” Miskovsky believed so strongly in the product that she opened her own business called Vaporium, located at 1927 S. Air Depot in Midwest City to help others quit smoking. “I opened the store because it helped me so much,” she said. See Up In Smoke on page 7. Don Mann

JASON'S SOUTHERN GOSPEL NEWSLETTERS
Continued from Page 1 “I want to be a part of helping people quit smoking successfully.” According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website, electronic cigarettes are products designed to deliver nicotine or other substances to a user in the form of a vapor. Typically, they are composed of a rechargeable, batteryoperated heating element, a replaceable cartridge that may contain nicotine or other chemicals, and an atomizer that, when heated, converts the contents of the cartridge into a vapor. This vapor can then be inhaled by the user. These products are often made to look like such products as cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. They also are sometimes made to look like everyday items such as pens and USB memory sticks, for people who wish to use the product without others noticing. Some e-cigarettes release nicotine while some merely release flavors – from spearmint to butterscotch – but also a range in nicotine levels. The term “vaping” comes from the vapor that comes out when e-cigarette users use the device. Trending everywhere The e-cigarette/vaping industry in growing nationally. According to Wells Fargo's Tobacco Talk research, the e-cigarette industry to expected to reach $1 billion within the next few years, for surpassing its current estimated $300 million in retail revenue. Wells Fargo's research reports at least 2.5 million users of the devices. Among those with a growing presence in the Mid-Del area is Vapor World located at 891 SE 29th in Midwest City. Matt Barrett, who serves as manager of Vapor World, said the Midwest City store has been open for about five months and its owners are ready to open four more stores in the state. “They (vaping stores) have been around for a while, but it has kind of sprung up overnight,” Barrett said. “Here in Oklahoma it just grew like a wildfire.” Brad Bennett, owner of Just Vapez, located at 4629 SE 29th Street in Del City concurred. “We were the first store to open in Del City and now there are five stores here,” Bennett said. “It is crazy.” On the rise Oklahoma has its share of adult smokers. According to statistics from the Oklahoma State Department of Health, Oklahoma ranks 39th (tied with two other states) among all states for adult smoking. Last year, the state ranked 47th. Statistics also show the adult smoking percentage decreased from 26.1 percent in 2011 to 23.3 percent in 2012. the 23.3 percent rate is a new historic low for Oklahoma. OSDH statistics show the percent of Oklahomans who smoke every day decreased from 19.9 percent in 2011 to 17 percent in 2012. The percent of “never smokers” increased from 49.2 percent in 2011 to 52.4 percent in 2012, which is estimated to be about 100,000 more Oklahomans who have never smoked. There were in estimated 75,000 fewer adult smokers in 2012 than 2011. OSDH statistics showed. Nationwide, about 21 percent of adults who smoke traditional cigarettes had used electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That's up from about 10 percent in 2010. Healthier alternative? The question of whether e-cigarettes are safe is still been debated. But for shop owners like Bennett there is little debate about the product's effectiveness. “Electronic cigarettes changed my and I am going to continue using them,” Bennett said. “It gives you the sensation like you are smoking without actually smoking and being harmed by the all the byproducts of burning traditional tobacco cigarettes or cigars. It is really about a safer alternative to smoking.” Barrett concurred. “The stuff you put in it is all food grade except for the nicotine,” Barrett said. “The nicotine is the only thing that can be considered bad for you, but it is no worse than caffeine is for you.” Investors paradise The reason to open a vapor/e-cigarette business varies from owner to owner. Kris Ford, manager of Vapor Lounge, with locations at 2839 S. Douglas in Midwest City and 9205 NE 23rd Street in Oklahoma City, said opening a business was based on a family success story. “My dad opened it because my step-mom was 30-year smoker and she got started with one and she hasn't smoked a cigarettes since,” he said. “My dad thought it was pretty cool and just decided to open one.” Bennett said he opened a vaping business after kicking has long-time tobacco habit. “I was a pack a day smoker for 10-plus years,” Bennett said. “I picked up an electronic cigarette and I have not had a traditional cigarette again. I feel good. I am passionate about it. It did change my life.” Opening a vaping business can be done relatively inexpensively depending continued next page.

Continued from Page 7 on the type of store and products offered. “It is relatively low start up costs,” Bennett said. “Some of these stores are opening up on $5,000 and $10,000. That is not the way we did it. It is a good business to get into and it is an awesome idea to quit smoking.” Barrett said he believes the e-cigarette/vaping business is here to stay. He adds he looks forward to helping others like him to quit smoking and lead a healthier life. “I was a smoker for 11 years at two packs a day.” Barrett said. “There was nothing that ever helped me and the day that I got one of these (e-cigarettes) I quit smoking completely. “I have personally helped a 50-year smoker quite smoking. After four days he was done completely smoking cigarettes. I feel good at the end of the day because I have helped somebody. I feel like this (industry) is here to stay for a while.” In some states banned e-cigarette for 18 or over and some states did not banned for minors e-cigarette like Oklahoma is one. I know some people have them two is out of school and a bunched at Del City High School have them.
