Treasurer’s Report GDS ended its last school year with the wonderful announcement of the purchase of two properties adjacent to the high school—Safeway and Martens—that offer us previously unimagined opportunities to strengthen our educational program, unify our campus, and develop additional long-term sources of revenue to support our financial sustainability goals. We were able to seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as a result of careful stewardship of our financial resources which enabled us to borrow the majority of the purchase price, as well as our focus on financial sustainability as a means to accomplish our school’s mission. Along with this exciting development, the everyday work of GDS goes on. Under the leadership of our Head of School Russell Shaw, GDS has continued its sharp focus on serving our students, advancing our educational and programmatic excellence, supporting our strong and cherished faculty, and enhancing our diversity and equity. Some of our signal achievements last year include the redesign and modernization of the high school library, the creation of “Odradek,” the student-named and highly utilized innovation space at the high school, and an overhaul of our technology infrastructure on both campuses, including the installation of new fully webintegrated classroom projection systems. You may have already noticed the stronger and more reliable wi-fi reception when you visit the school! We have also made important curricular enhancements such as offering our first summer policy institute for high school students and foreign language study for PK-2 students after school, better integrating our sixth graders into the life of the middle school, and producing a new annual middle school musical. Last June, when we announced the purchase of the new properties, the Board of Trustees told the community that the school expects to be able to meet the cost of purchasing these properties without significant impact on our annual operating budget and to continue our commitment to low tuition increases and competitive faculty salaries. Some steps that we have taken so far to insulate the operating budget include: • Creating separate budgets for our school operations and for the building project. • Negotiating rental income from the properties while we are developing the master plan. • Continuing stewardship of endowed and reserved funds. • Limiting our exposure to interest rate increases on our debt. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we have begun to receive significant contributions, over-and-above our regular fundraising, to help cover some of the additional cost of this effort. The Board and our financial advisors are confident that these properties are enormously valuable assets, so that no matter what the outcome of the master planning process, the school will benefit. COMPREHENSIVE GIVING FOR 2013-2014 Each individual who gives to Georgetown Day School supports the unique GDS community that students, parents, faculty, and alumni experience. Gifts to GDS are truly investments in the future of our school and our students. The tremendous generosity of our community allows GDS to have the lowest student to faculty ratio in our peer school group, one of the most diverse student populations in the city, and a rigorous academic program that earns recognition nationwide. Support for Experiential Learning Leslie and Bruce Lane (parents of Dana ’17) want to give students the opportunity to experience life outside of GDS and our classrooms. Bill and Mary Kerr (grandparents of Isabel ’19 and Jason ’24) understand that moments of exploration and discovery can shape and re-shape a young person’s life, career, and outlook. That is why both of these families have dedicated significant funds ($150,000 and $100,000 respectively) to the GDS Experiential Learning Curriculum. “Curriculum Evolution – Providing students with skills to collaborate and innovate for tomorrow’s needs” is Goal 3 of the GDS Strategic Plan. Under that goal, Objective 5 is focused on PK-12 experiential learning curriculum and calls for us to innovate existing and develop new PK-12 experiential learning opportunities (e.g. minimesters, policy institute, MS/HS entrepreneurship curriculum) and develop a plan for implementation. The Lanes and the Kerrs are directly supporting these innovations, and changing the course of our students’ lives, one experience and one student at a time.

Alumni Match Up to the Challenge

$75,000 was the challenge GDS graduate, Caleb Kramer ‘87, issued to his fellow alumni: increased gifts or new gifts to financial aid in 2013-2014 would be met dollar for dollar up to $75,000. GDS alumni from around the world contributed more than $75,000 ($93,000 actually) in new and increased gifts to meet the challenge and support our students, inside and outside the classroom. These matching funds bolster mid-range grants to honor the 1945 GDS Charter’s goal of providing access to middle-income families, including those working in the government, for public advocacy, or for charitable organizations.

Volunteer Profile: Susan Wegner Soon after meeting her future spouse, Adam Wegner ‘83 in 1986, and learning that he had attended an independent school in DC, Susan, asked him, “Did you have to wear uniforms?”. Susan had experienced two models for independent schools growing up: parochial and traditional college preparatory; both required uniforms. Adam’s answer: “Well, in my junior year they made us wear shoes.” Fast forward to September 2000, when Susan and Adam were applying their two sons to GDS, Aron ’12 and Holden ’14 to 2nd grade and kindergarten, respectively. Susan remembers vividly the day in early March 2001 when Jody Goodman (Aaron ’14 and Julia Fisher ’09) called to officially welcome her and her boys to the GDS family. It was the start of what Susan considers a life-long, and very personal relationship with GDS: “Given that I am the only Wegner not to graduate from GDS, it was important to me to become really involved in the daily life of the school. I felt that it was not just occasionally helping out in the classrooms during the day, but it was important to gain insight into the needs of the school, faculty, and parents on a much larger scale. I recognized I needed to balance my activities— development, classroom, and social—to ensure that over 13 years I would feel connected. Adam and the boys had a connection to GDS; I had to forge my own. What I’ve learned is that your time doesn’t end when your kids leave GDS.”

2001-2002

Within a week of Aron ’12 and Holden ’14 starting at GDS, Susan, too, jumps in and chairs the Country Market Day (CMD) Bake Shop (now the Sweet Shop). The next year, she starts giving PK-2 Admissions tours, signs on as a room parent, and continues to do so through LS. Chairs the Faculty Appreciation Lunch.

2002-2003

2003-2004

Co-Chairs CMD. Joins the Development Committee (now Advancement). Continues her Annual Fund volunteer work, and plans the Faculty Appreciation Lunch for good measure.

2004-2005

Co-Chairs CMD for her second year. Takes on an annual Auction Section Chair role (Great Get-A-Ways).

Chairs the CMD Sweet Shop, and the Faculty Appreciation Lunch, again. Becomes Annual Fund Grade Coordinator.

Volunteer Profile: Susan Wegner (cont.) 2005-2006

Chairs (on her own) the Annual Auction and Gala. Given that it was GDS’ 60th Birthday, Susan pushed hard to make some changes to the Auction and Gala—and for the first time ever, the Auction & Gala was held on the LMS campus. In addition, includes students in the Auction by asking each class to paint a large fiberglass grasshopper, auctioned off that night.

2006-2007

Serves on the Development Committee and the Ad- Hoc Gift Acceptance Policy Committee.

2007-2008

Rejuvenates the GDS school store with Mindy Strelitz (Johannah ’01 and Nathan ’12), setting the stage for the future Hoppers Den that raises money to support financial aid. Co-Chairs Aron’s 8th Grade Graduation reception at GDS. Completes her final year as LS admissions tour guide.

2008-2009

Becomes a HS admissions tour guide.

2009-2010

Starts a four-year run as an In The Hopper editor.

2010-2011

Plans and executes, with Lisie Gottdenker (Ellie ’16, Noah ’17, and Olivia ’20) year-long celebration of GDS’s 65th Anniversary, a community-wide celebration including every member of the GDS community, reaching across generations. Filmmaker Jane Oakley (Christian ’17) interviews people around the world and GDS publishes an updated comprehensive history highlighting GDS milestones since 1945. Joins the After-Prom Committee and serves for three years. Organizes high school off-campus PSA socials.

2011-2012

Hosts the 10th grade off-campus PSA social. Joins the PSA New Family Welcome Committee and helps with Buddy family matches, welcome calls and events.

2013-2014

Serves on the Senior Gift Committee and hosts the Senior Dinner/Off-Campus Social. Serves on the Senior Quest Night Planning Committee.

May 2014

Susan’s youngest child graduates from GDS. GDS is grateful for Susan’s volunteer efforts, and for helping make our school a true community. We would not be the school and the family we are without the robust field of committed volunteers who join us every day of the week.
