FROM WHERE I STAND

I’ve been thinking about the year 2032. 2032 is the year that the students who enter the GDS Pre-Kindergarten next fall will graduate from college and enter the workforce. It feels very far away. And yet for GDS, it represents something important. What do we know about 2032? How does a great school prepare children for an uncertain future? Should we be offering courses in interstellar travel or how to pilot a hovercraft? While we would be hard-pressed to predict the details of life nearly two decades hence, we can with a fair degree of accuracy anticipate the skills and capacities that our children will need to have a meaningful impact in this changed world. These same skills lie at the heart of a GDS education, and as we look to the future, we are committed to ensuring that our students have the opportunity to learn, practice, and ultimately, master these skills. In the past several years, we have worked to identify a list of ten capacities that, while not falling neatly into traditional academic realms, we believe to be essential. Here is our working list: We don’t offer courses that focus explicitly on risk-taking or solving complex problems, and yet these and our other “A GDS Student Will…” capacities are taught and reinforced continually. We teach these skills through a challenging physics lab or a

hard-fought soccer game, when building a city out of blocks or exploring constitutional issues on Capitol Hill, when sitting in the hallway discussing an assignment or building a two-story set for a production of Romeo and Juliet. What is essential is that throughout our program, these skills are identified, nurtured, and assessed with intention. These objectives are embedded into our new strategic plan, which will serve to guide our School into an exciting future. These skills, as we have defined them, will foster in our students both the will and capacity to change the world in ways that each generation is called to do. While we can only imagine the particular challenges that will face next year’s PK students as they step into the adult world, it is our responsibility to provide them with the skills to pilot their metaphorical hovercrafts and do their part in changing the world for the better.

his fall, GDS unveiled a brandnew science lab for the young scientists in grades 1 and 2. A dedicated science teacher, Charaun Wills (above) has created an environment for exploring, questioning, observing, organizing, and doing. “Early exposure to true science skills— and the dedicated time to perform those skills—is really essential to kids understanding and loving the subject matter,” said Charaun. During a recent classroom visit, students were readily taking on the scientist role, labeling animal groups and then having a little fun acting like the animals they were categorizing. On another day, students were using tally marks to

count the number of paper clips sticking to a magnet in order to determine which magnet was the strongest, thus integrating their work with the math skills learned in their main classrooms. And on yet another day, students were drawing connections from their lives to science and learning tidbits like the fact that Sponge Bob creator Stephen Hillenburg is a trained marine biologist— how else would he know the creatures that inhabit tidal zones? An enthusiastic instructor, Charaun hopes to inspire the next generation of scientists and serve as a role model for the kids in her classroom: “My dream for this space is that students feel welcome and inspired to explore the natural curiosities that live within them.” GEORGETOWN DAYS FALL 2013

An Open Heart Is a Window into Learning For the seventh year in a row, GDS HS Physiology and AP Biology students traveled to Innova Fairfax Hospital to witness an open-heart surgery firsthand. This popular visit has more than the cool “ick” factor going for it. “This gives the students a window into what goes on in the medical world at a very real level and provides a real-world example of the terms and concepts students are studying.

sixth grade

Science Sarcophagi By Michael Desautels, Sixth Grade Science Teacher

In addition, it makes a very sobering connection between unhealthy lifestyle habits and the consequence of heart disease,” says HS science chair Cori Coats. Students were introduced to the surgery prior the event, learning about the patient and the surgical plan and instruments that would be used. Students handled anatomical models of the heart and real examples of the tools and materials involved in the procedure. For students learning about the human body, there is nothing that compares to the real thing. “It was an amazing and awesome experience,” says Didac Hormiga ‘15.

In a cross-disciplinary unit, sixth grade students are immersed in ancient Egypt—studying the civilization in history, writing a biography of an ancient Egyptian in English class, and experimenting with the process of mummification in science.

JASON PUTSCHÉ PHOTOGRAPHY

Science students use the framework of ancient Egypt to learn about several scientific principals, including osmosis, engineering, and scale. Students get to prepare “mummies” by covering pieces of lean meat with a version of natron, a naturally occurring substance in Egypt. Essentially salt and sodium bicarbonate, natron draws water away from the meat and prevents decomposition and decay. Students learn that the cells in the meat lose water via osmosis, and the resulting decrease in mass is measured and recorded over time. The students’ mummies are wrapped with a gauze-like cloth and could stay preserved like this for years. This unit is one of my favorites as a teacher—it’s perfect for sixth graders because there is a degree of “grossness,” so to speak, and they can see how a simple process (salting) can create great results (preventing decomposition). Science requires a creative mind. That’s why this project also includes building a scale model sarcophagus to entomb the wrapped mummy. Students adorn their sarcophagi with hieroglyphs and Egyptian motifs, and they are free to choose their own materials and designs with which to construct and decorate their sarcophagi. This year, one of the students made a sphinx with a sarcophagus hidden in its body, and another made a sarcophagus with a secret compartment. As I have developed this project over my past 15 years at GDS, I am always in awe of the final project. The variety of shapes, sizes, and colors is remarkable. The students’ masterpieces demonstrate incredible effort and care. I am proud of the 60 or so sarcophagi I have collected from past years—they are special to me because I am reminded of the students who made them and I love showing them off to the new sixth graders each year. 4

Fourth Graders Reach Out to

PRESIDENT OBAMA Those are the words of Owen, a GDS fourth grade student written in a letter to the Commander in Chief, President Obama.

When I heard about the shooting at the Navy Yard, I asked myself, ‘What has this world come to?’ I don’t even know if I will live to 20 years old…. Please do something.

Students had the opportunity to write personal letters to the President on public policy issues that concerned them. The students prepared by watching a video about what happens to letters sent to the President and then brainstormed topics, questions, and items of interest for the letters. The final letters ranged in topic from the shooting at the Navy Yard to cancer research and posed questions to the President about his dogs and his favorite basketball team. Whether the letters were heartfelt, friendly, or challenging, this project underlined for the students the importance of civic participation—and allowed them to have their voices heard by their President.

GDS Students Take On Research-Based Inquiry This year marks the launch of GDS’s partnership with the Center for the Study of Boys’ and Girls’ Lives (CSBGL) at the University of Pennsylvania—a consortium of nine independent schools that lead research-based projects at their respective institutions on the conditions of boy’s and girls’ lives. Students at each school work with faculty to identify a research question that they then spend the year exploring. For instance, last year Greenwich Academy in Connecticut explored five different topics all tied to the issue of confidence at school: standards of beauty and self-confidence; the use of social media and self-confidence; introversion and extroversion; the coordinate school relationship with Brunswick School; and school transitions. During the 2012 school year, they explored how online communication affects the way students knowingly create their identities by and through technological media. GDS high school students will spend the next few months brainstorming a research question and performing qualitative and quantitative research to gather data, culminating in a

Faculty leader Dresden Koons, GDS Dean of Teaching and Learning, says this is one of the most exciting components of the program. “This partnership creates an excellent opportunity for our students to explore and lead participatory action research about their own lived experience at GDS, strengthening both their research skills and their commitment to social justice through the process,” she says. GDS joins Greenwich Academy and seven other prestigious independent schools in the consortium, including The Haverford School (PA); Lawrenceville School (NJ); Riverdale Country School (NY); The Shipley School (PA); University School (OH); Miss Porter’s School (CT); and The DwightEnglewood School (NJ). Building Community, Supporting our Mission

BY THE NUMBERS:

Country Market Day isn’t just a day that provides fun and amusement for all. What makes Country Market Day special is the opportunity for us to come together each year as a community to support something that represents the very core of our mission: supporting financial aid to increase access to and equity in our school.

Volunteer hours that go into Country Market Day VS. Hours the event lasts

It’s also a day to welcome new members to the GDS community and work to foster and nurture existing relationships—connecting with parents and faculty we don’t get to see as often as we might like. The experience gives us the opportunity to watch our children practicing their social skills and fosters their own sense of themselves within our larger community. As we seek to meet the ever-changing needs of our students and community, we continue to build upon the foundation put in place by GDS’s visionary founders. Their commitment to building a community of learning that defied the norms of the time and embraced academic excellence combined with the pursuit of social justice is at the heart of GDS’s daily life. A core part of that commitment to excellence and justice is financial aid, which provides all of our students a community of remarkably diverse backgrounds, experiences, and opinions. And getting the beans scared out of you in the Haunted House isn’t so bad, either. Please join us in thanking all of the volunteers who helped make this year’s Country Market Day a success, especially our two co-chairs, Connie Lindenauer and Ronni Oppenheim.

These are the first series of plates the Introduction to Ceramics/Sculpture classes made in mid-September. The objective for the first few projects is to teach basic throwing skills and explore basic decorative processes. The students start by throwing the plate on a potter’s wheel. The plates are then trimmed and painted with a red slip (liquefied red clay.) Once the surface has dried, the concentric circle designs are etched into the plate by scraping away the red clay with a small metal tool to reveal the white clay beneath. Students have design options: they may use a damp sponge to soften and blend the edges of their design or create the effect of texture using red slip. All Introduction to Ceramics/Sculpture students are required to make two red slip plates before they move onto throwing bowls. Fall Choral Concert

In October, the 100-voice GDS Singers performed at the Independent School Choral Festival, joining eight other independent schools at Washington National Cathedral for this annual event. GDS was the largest choir at this festival— 20 percent of GDS High School students belong to this talented group of vocalists. Membership in the choir is open to all high school students. “The GDS singers were near perfection and very moving in their solo performance of Flanders Fields,” said Laura Rosberg, High School performing arts department chair. “The acoustics in this beautiful space are a wonderful backdrop to the nearly perfect voices of our student singers. It is always a treat to collaborate with other fine high school musicians in this beautiful cathedral,” said Ben Hutchens, choir director and vocal music teacher.

A Cartoonist in Our Midst By Michael Wenthe, High School English Teacher

In elementary school, I drew a weekly comic strip that ran in my hometown paper; now I contribute to an all-ages comicbook anthology. As a child, I fell in love with the sheer fun and wit of favorite comic strips like Pogo; as an adult, I became fascinated by the formal possibilities of comics as a narrative medium. A good cartoonist’s line has the distinctiveness of a good writer’s voice, and cartoon storytelling can exploit many of the resources (and much of the poetics) of verbal narrative or poetry while enjoying other features particular to itself. In the English classroom, students both read and write poems, stories, and essays; since many of us teach graphic novels now, cartooning assignments have their place as well. I hope that my experience with reading and making comics will inform the experiential learning of GDS students who write and draw their own cartoon stories. Teacher Summer Travel Brings The World Back To Students By Todd Liu, Third Grade Teacher

One of the things I love most about being a teacher is that I am always learning. This past summer I had the incredible opportunity to assume the role of a wide-eyed student by participating in the Transatlantic Outreach Program (TOP)— a two-week study tour of Germany for teachers. I was inspired to immerse myself in German culture after teaching a German student in class last year and getting to know her delightful family. By joining TOP, I was able to learn firsthand about life in modern Germany. I savored every bite of a homemade apple strudel; biked around the historic town of Potsdam; wandered around the ruins of Heidelberg Castle. I was humbled passing by the steppingstones embedded in the sidewalks of Berlin that commemorate Jewish individuals who lost their lives at concentration camps. I got to envision myself in Cold War Germany at Point Alpha, the U.S. observation post that separated East and West Germany near the Fulda Gap. I spoke with students about their experiences in vocational schools, a

hallmark of the German education system, and with experts about the role of Germany in the European Union. The most exciting part of my trip has been sharing the experience with my students. I recently showed my class photographs of the Deutsche Bank Headquarters in Frankfurt, which is the first “green” skyscraper in the world, certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. I showed them ways in which the architect accomplished this environmental feat—windows that open, no air conditioning, solar panels, rainwater used for plumbing. Then I asked the students to design their own “green” buildings, using this German skyscraper as a model. They sketched their own creations enthusiastically and articulated the importance of making things “green.” This exercise was a great reminder for my students that we are indeed members of a global community with certain responsibilities and that learning from other cultures is both vital and rewarding.

HOPPER ATHLETICS GOES ALL OUT

FOR SPORTS SATURDAY On a beautiful sunny Saturday in September, Hopper spirit was at an all-time high as GDS sports teams demonstrated their skill and their supporters’ enthusiasm won the day. From the parent cookout to the junior class car wash, this day wasn’t just about sports but also about our unique and supportive community. The LMS got in on the action through a soccer clinic organized by coaches

David Gillespie, Quinn Killy, Katie Redmond, and Harold Newton and attended by 40 LMS students. As High School Athletic Director Kathy Hudson said, “We had more fans at the men’s varsity soccer game than at any other game in the history of Sports Saturday. The fan club did a wonderful job and provided a unified front, looking great in their fan shirts.”

They’re Going For

DISTANCE, They’re Going For

SPEED By Anthony Belber, Head Coach, Cross-Country

The men’s and women’s high school cross-country teams have had another impressive season. The men started out with a victory at the Lake Forest Cross-Country Festival in Felton, Delaware, where they won the varsity race for small schools and would have won the large school race as well had they been allowed to enter. Despite a few key injuries, the team maintained good momentum and went toe-to-toe with the best public and private school running teams in the Mid-Atlantic. The senior class of boys became the first group in School history to win a league banner for the four consecutive years of their high school careers. On Saturday, October 26, at the MAC Championships they led the men’s teams to victory in the varsity, JV, and freshman/ sophomore races. The varsity boys were motivated by the gutsy performance of their senior co-captain Sam Boardman and won the race despite missing injured number-one runner, co-captain Griffin Colaizzi ‘14. The women’s team was not content to let the men enjoy all the glory and has had by far the most stunning season in school history! Not only did they finish second at the ultra-challenging Salesianum Invitational small schools race in Wilmington, Delaware, but they even outperformed the boys with an eighth-place finish at the Third Battle Invitational in Winchester, Virginia, on October 19 (a meet at which the men’s finished tenth).

To round out the fall, the team took part in this year’s private school championships at the Montgomery County Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood, Maryland, and some of the top GDS runners travelled to North Carolina over the Thanksgiving break to race in the Nike-sponsored Southeast Regional Team Championships where the men finished 12th in the Southeast region of the United States two years running.

ROGER COLAIZZI

At the league championships for the Independent School League (ISL), GDS women finished third in the varsity race and fourth in the JV race. The 16-school league is stronger than ever. In any previous year of the league’s history, the average time of the GDS top five runners (20:27 for 5km) would have been fast enough to win the league banner!

WE ARE WOMEN’S SOCCER This fall, women’s soccer at GDS has enjoyed much success, showing what team chemistry is all about. “ We are a true team,” says coach Katie Redmond. And that’s thanks to the intentional team-building that she and coach Anna Rhymes concentrated on this year. The pre-season team camping trip and other fun activities gave the team a great boost. “We’ve gone up and down in injuries the whole season, but through it all we’ve stayed really strong. We have players who excel at every angle, stepping into new positions and continuing to win,” says Katie. With a 10–3–3 season, the team beat Sidwell Friends for the first time in 10 years, in overtime; fought for the ISL AA banner in their last game of the season against NCS; took an impressive third place in the ISL tournament; and claimed a number of other highprofile wins this season. “We are so proud of what our team has accomplished this year. Our success has truly been a group effort, led by senior co-captains Maya Patel and Abby Needell. We look forward to continuing to grow the strength of our program for GDS athletics,” said Anna.

Following Her Lead

When Mayada Audeh ’14 (pictured above with her parents) is on the court, her focus is intense but her emotions are calm. As coach Amanda Deringer puts it, “Mayada starts off slow, methodical—and then just drives the game. She will never show any anger on the court. She’s a real pro.” This year marks Mayada’s fourth year as GDS’s highest ranking varsity player. With a 21-24 record, she has been on the All-League ISL team for four years running. Last year, Mayada won the ISL tournament and ranked number one in our division.

What I love most about playing tennis at GDS is being a part of a team. Mayada has been playing tennis since she was 8 years old, after deciding to take a stab at the game by attending a local summer camp. She found she loved the sport and has been swinging the racket ever since.

BORN TO GOLF

It’s the fact that it’s JUST YOU OUT THERE— relying on yourself to do your best performance. Sophomore Jack Klein has had an illustrious two years on GDS’s golf team. He’s made it to the MAC All-League team both years, posting scores of 79 and 78 respectively—well on his way to securing AllLeague status for all four high school years. At a 38-stroke average for nine holes, Jack is the top sophomore in our league and last year placed fifth in the MAC Championship. At the age of five, Jack asked his parents if he could start learning how to golf, inspired by his grandfather who had a four handicap. Golfing came naturally to him, and his family has continued to support and inspire him as he’s grown into his game.

“What I love most about playing tennis at GDS is being a part of a team,” says Mayada, who also plays individually outside of school.

Jack says that what he loves most about the game is the experience of being on his own. He says that while it takes all kinds of support and training, “it’s the fact that it’s just you out there—relying on yourself to do your best performance” that appeals to him.

Amanda agrees that Mayada is a true team leader: “Mayada has a quiet leadership that exudes confidence. She’s supportive of other players—a competitor like none other.”

Says coach Kathy Hudson, “Jack is a staple of our golf program—an enduring, great athlete who’s attitude is a great asset to our team.”

THE POWER OF THREE:

Getting to Know the Principals By Lisa Novick, proud parent of a GDS 8th grader

What were you like in lower school? Middle school? High school? These questions were posed to Principals Laura Yee, Nancy Kaplan, and C.A. Pilling respectively. Their answers were refreshingly open, poignant, and reflect many of the approaches each brings to GDS—including working together to make the school the best it can be.

“I could not really read until I was in middle school and didn’t read fluently until maybe college.” Laura candidly shares that while she loved her Wellesley, Massachusetts, elementary school thanks to her friends, art, and dance class, she also felt anxious because academics did not come easily to her: “I was a very well-behaved and quiet student, which translated into not getting a lot of attention from my teachers.” It wasn’t until Laura was studying for her master’s degree that she recognized herself in her textbooks and realized that her mind processed information differently from most other children’s. “It would have been great,” Laura says, “if someone had understood my struggles when I was young and facilitated a better learning process for me.”

JASON PUTSCHÉ PHOTOGRAPHY

JASON PUTSCHÉ PHOTOGRAPHY

Laura Yee – Lower School Principal: VALUING THE INDIVIDUAL

It is no surprise that Laura has spent much of her professional career focused on equity in teaching. Laura does not want any children at GDS to experience the difficulties she did in elementary school. “I believe our school has an obligation to value the individual, to know where every child is academically, to meet them where they are, and to move them forward. We are so fortunate to have exceptionally skilled faculty and staff. One of my goals is continuing to keep the communication strong among all of us so we have the teamwork necessary to meet the needs of every child.”

Nancy Kaplan – Middle School Principal: ENSURING KIDS ARE KNOWN Among the many colorful items in Nancy Kaplan’s office is a blueand-white bumper sticker affixed to the front of her desk. It reads, “Teach Your Children Well.” The meaning behind these words from a well-known Graham Nash song is rooted in her own experiences. Nancy shares, “I went to a huge middle school outside of Albany, New York. I remember being teased because I looked different, and I also didn’t feel much connection with most of the adults in my school community. What changed things for me was when a music teacher saw potential in me and nurtured my love of singing and piano playing, which built up my selfesteem. Being and feeling ‘known’ at least to one person made all the difference to me.”

JASON PUTSCHÉ PHOTOGRAPHY JASON PUTSCHÉ PHOTOGRAPHY

Nancy’s deep understanding of adolescents comes from her years of work in the middle grades. Nancy says, “I don’t want middle school to be something you have to get through in order to reach a better place. I want it to be a place where you can have some of your first, best memories and be supported even during the toughest of times. Having teachers like ours who fearlessly regard and truly want to connect with kids as individuals means that our kids are known.”

C.A. Pilling – High School Principal: HELPING STUDENTS TAKE LEAPS C.A. Pilling loves being part of a team. In high school she played sports and was very involved in all sorts of activities, from building homecoming floats to making hoagies for fundraisers. She loved being a part of a group and connecting with people no matter what the venue. C.A. remembers, “While I was outgoing and enthusiastic, I shied away from leadership roles but loved being involved with big

ideas and collaborative efforts. The irony is not lost on me that I steered clear from the spotlight during high school and now find myself as a school leader.” It is understandable why one of C.A.’s favorite quotes is “Leap and the net will appear.” C.A.’s career began in environmental policy, and her ‘leap’ to teaching 16 years ago has led to program innovation for GDS. “To help kids take their own ‘leaps,’ we have to remember that each comes into the building with a different context. We as educators should take this into consideration—the fact that every student’s safety net has its own ‘weave,’” she says. Knowing the individual does not just pertain to the students. It includes the faculty and administrators. Is it advantageous to know that Nancy taught marksmanship at summer camp? Or, that Laura is a certified running coach and also a pit bull advocate? Or, that C.A. has a map of the United States in her office that outlines her seven-week bike trip with ten high school kids? According to Nancy, it does indeed: “Our openness about who we are and acceptance at GDS helps kids feel more comfortable with who they are and their place in the world.” GEORGETOWN DAYS FALL 2013

It Takes More than Advanced Degrees Leading an educational institution clearly requires specific expertise and professional skills. Together, Laura, Nancy, and C.A. bring a total of 50 collective years teaching along with a wealth of knowledge in the areas of minority and urban education, special education, professional development, curriculum and program innovation, and progressive learning. However, beyond their specialized degrees and years of experience, they also bring with them a fervent pride and belief in the School’s mission. Laura puts it this way: “In any other school, you would have to work so hard to even start a dialogue about race, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or cultural differences. At GDS, we go beyond that to also engage students and faculty in a meaningful way so that they understand the systems of inequity around them and are empowered to make a difference.”

Coming Together Although operating under the same high standards and philosophy, GDS’s Lower, Middle, and High Schools have distinctions and different agendas necessary to meet the academic and developmental needs of the students each serves. These division heads recognize, however, that they can learn a lot from each other. Committed to fostering school-wide

alignment and sharing perspectives, Laura, Nancy, and C.A. are eager and excited to support each other. They meet every month outside of school, visit each other’s campuses, and check in with each other on a regular basis. As Laura puts it, “Working together is what’s best for our children. Our objective as an institution is to help our kids develop ownership of their learning, along with empathy, social advocacy, and independence.” “The three of us truly look forward to exchanging ideas and information so that we can address the whole child from PK through 12th grade,” adds Nancy. These dialogues also help support faculty. According to C.A., “We know each division has wonderful expertise. And that’s why the three of us are committed to learning from each other.” The Principals feel so strongly about integrating their efforts, they attended a four-day retreat funded by Outward Bound (pictured below) and geared to educational administrators in Asheville, North Carolina, in October. Challenged to stretch their own comfort zones and take risks within a safe and supportive environment, the three had an opportunity to reflect on how they can best create those safe spaces for learning within GDS. “This retreat demanded our attention 24/7 and provided experiences that we can incorporate into our work with our faculty and in the classroom,” says C.A.

Adds Laura: “We were really pushed to consider how we structure our educational environments and how we support everyone at our school to stretch his and her own learning.”

Each administrator is also committed to evaluating how to use resources effectively. And, community building remains high on the list of priorities.

“Entering in as an educator, but giving yourself over to being a student and trusting the process was hard at times,” says Nancy. According to Nancy, there were many profound moments; the one that hit her the most was the time period when each member of the team was left alone for more than an hour in the woods with just some water, a backpack, and her own thoughts.

What Makes a Day Great?

“I was given the chance to step out of my life and pause and look inward. As we look at trying to promote vigorous reflective practice for our teachers and ourselves at GDS, it became clear to me that you need that time to reflect. As administrators, we need to continue to find ways to provide that time for our teachers,” she says.

“When I walk into a classroom, I am amazed not only by the skill and expertise of the teachers but also by the ease with which they assess each child’s needs and the different ways in which they interact. They make it seem effortless, and I love experiencing how engaged the students are,” said Laura.

Building the Future Together One of the most significant areas where the principals’ leadership skills and commitment to integrated efforts will be vital is in the implementation of GDS’s Strategic Plan (see page 26 for more details). This blueprint for the future could not have been created without the input of the entire GDS community, and the principals, faculty, staff, and parents all have a stake in its success. While Laura, Nancy, and C.A. have specific goals to address that are relevant to the grades they oversee, they have common priorities. First and foremost: meet the needs of every child. “Working to meet students’ needs involves change. Big or small—change is never easy but so worth it in the long run,” said Nancy. Another important school-wide focal point is supporting faculty to help them stay current, grow as educators, and maintain the highest standards. This includes differentiation in teaching. As C.A. put it, “Teachers need to reach different kids in different ways, and we need to provide faculty with the necessary training and tools to do so. One size simply does not fit all.”

Each administrator agrees that she wants to make every day great for kids, teachers, and parents. And while this continues to require thorough and thoughtful investigation, they get daily reminders of what an extraordinary place GDS is.

For Nancy, “There is nothing better than seeing how comfortable and safe kids can feel in this environment. We have in place a foundation that encourages kids to truly be themselves.” “A great day is when students share ideas, voice their opinions, solve problems, and are kind to one another,” said C.A. “I love watching our kids think and do for themselves, and I love seeing how the teachers encourage them—even if it means that the process takes longer.” Laura, Nancy, and C.A. would agree that making magic happen at GDS is not always easy, nor should it be. But what guides the effort each and every day is keeping focused on these beliefs: Kids are central. Teachers need to be the best they can be. Community involvement is key. And, change and adaptability are ongoing necessities. And how does this trio of leaders know when they have been successful? C.A. offers an answer for all the Principals, “When students demonstrate in some way that the school is as important to them as it is to the adults who pour their hearts and souls into this place every day.”

The three of us truly look forward to exchanging ideas and information so that we can address the whole child from PK through 12th grade.

SPIDER ROCK AT CANYON DE CHELLY

If this is to be, it is up to me. GDS Students Return to Navajo Nation By GDS High School Students

Each year a group of a dozen or so GDS students travel to Arizona’s Navajo Nation to take part in a variety of activities, immersing themselves in Navajo culture and supporting the community. This past summer, GDS students raised money to support ADABI, a domestic abuse shelter; worked with students at the Navajo Nation’s tribal college to test drip and flood irrigation systems; led activities for elementary students at Round Rock School and a summer school camp in New Mexico; and learned the traditions of Navajo culture. The group continues to meet throughout the year to plan fundraisers for the organizations they support and plan for the American Indian Assembly at the High School in January. Here are some reflections and photos from June 2013 participants ››

My late grandparents raised all of their children and grandchildren to keep two basic principles in mind when deciding what you are going to do in this world: “If it is to be, it is up to me” and “You never know who is going to be the next friend of the Navajo.” It was with these two thoughts in mind that my oldest brother, Carl ’09, feeling the pressure of getting his required community service hours in by junior year and thinking about where his community really is, established with the help of our family the GDS Navajo Community Service Trip in 2007. Through this trip my brothers and I have maintained a strong bond to our home community of Round Rock, Arizona, by bringing GDS students for service activities and, more important, to learn what life is like on the Navajo Nation and in the Southwest. The students who go on this trip are able to experience what is practically a nation within a nation. This means that traditional Navajo ways are still practiced and are a vital aspect of everyday life side by side with modern life. For everything the students learn they also give something back to the community, learning empathy for the Navajo and the challenges of Reservation life. Wherever these students go they will always carry with them that understanding—especially I hope back to GDS, and the Navajo concept of t’áá hwó’ ají t’éego “if it is to be, it is up to me” and remember they are always our friends. lone pillars of stone towers of stability silent but mighty the sand likes to dance with the lively summer breeze that whistles through stone the desolate plain outstretched to infinity striking awe in hearts a lone monolith etched in time water and wind the stunning Round Rock high up in the sky a spot of beauty and green wind blows and tents fly The evening sun falls in a glorious color the full moon rises beautiful people grown strong from a mighty land they can move mountains

“DINE BIKEYAH” – NAVAJO LAND The land in the Navajo Nation is some of the most beautiful in the United States. At first glance, it may seem like a barren land, but if you look closely there are many 22

fascinating structures, especially “Spider Rock,” (pictured on pages 20-21) a tall pillar-like rock that stands vertically hundreds of feet into the air, the home of Spider Woman. (Eric Sung ’15)

LIFE AND LEARNING No one who’s grown up with trees surrounding them can imagine what it’s like to stand in the American Southwest desert. When we ran a 5k through Tsaile [in support of the Let’s Move campaign to raise awareness about fitness and wellness in American Indian communities], the air tasted drier and cleaner than in DC, and the sunset as we crossed the finish line was almost as breathtaking as the race itself. But Dine’ Bike’yah—Navajo land—is so much more than an O’Keefe landscape. The land itself—the four sacred mountains the white and black and yellow and turquoise stone— is linked intimately to the Navajo culture, history, and way of life. (Kalila Morsink ’15)

LIVELIHOOD [While planting at Diné College], a young Navajo intern handed us the seeds and told us that in Navajo tradition, conversing, singing songs, and telling jokes as you plant results in a bountiful harvest. This aspect of Navajo tradition, while making for a fun and productive afternoon, also exemplifies the Navajo approach to their livelihood. There is a strong sense of reciprocity between the Navajo and the natural world that they rely upon for sustenance—the plants, the sheep, the very land itself. In return for laughter, love, and respect, the plants give the Navajo people life. (Jacob Roberts ’15)

After spending a day leading Navajo children in activities at Round Rock School, we accompanied them on a culture and wellness camping trip to the Lukachukai Mountains. We experienced Navajo life—making bread, learning the significance of traditional foods such as blue corn meal, and hearing Navajo women elders tell stories around the campfire. This experience opened our eyes to Navajo culture and the importance of passing on the traditions from one generation to the next. (Sarah Shine ’15 and Rachel Risoleo ’15)

FRIENDS OF THE NAVAJO Before this trip, I had never been west of the Mississippi, let alone to the Navajo Nation. I have been around or near water for my entire life, and I was nervous to go to a landlocked desert because water, however simple it may be, would be lacking. However, rather than feeling captive by this absence of water, I was so affected by the magnificence of the desert scenery and its significance to the Navajo people that I vowed to someday return to the reservation and once again experience the splendor that made my jaw drop. (Ryan Mendelson ’15)

My transition to the way of living on the Reservation was swift, but throughout the trip I kept looking back on my peers’ and my privileged way of living, realizing that all these things we take for granted were actually very limited in this part of the country. Toward the last few days, I felt as if I had changed in a literal and figurative way. I had seen what most people are never able to see. I was able to be a part of the culture and see the kids’ excitement at being with us. On my way back home, I felt that the trip had changed me in more ways than I had thought possible. (Laurent Guichard ’16)

CHANGES IN RESERVATION LIFE We volunteered at ADABI, a domestic abuse shelter, by putting on a car wash to help raise money for victims’ assistance. We chopped firewood to be used for the traditional healing ceremonies that help families and also donated a much-needed DVD/VCR player to occupy the children [at the shelter]. Off the reservation, we learned about urban Indian communities and in Santa Fe taught kids from many different tribes at a summer camp. We saw that it was a struggle for these kids to grow up away from their tribal homes, but that they found pride in creating an intertribal community. (Griffin Colaizzi ’14 and Tristan Colaizzi ’16)

Meet the Trustees Get to know three of our trustees.

GDS is fortunate to have a diverse, distinctive, and involved Board of Trustees working in partnership with our administration to support the GDS mission. Representing the interests of students and families, our board has played an integral part in strategic planning, school growth, and financial goal-setting. We are grateful to every member of our board for the commitment and energy brought to the table. Read all of the Board of Trustees’ bios at www.gds.org/Board.

Jenny Abramson ’95 Joined the board in July 2013. Serves on the Governance, Diversity, and Advancement committees. New to the GDS Board this summer, Jenny Abramson is not a new face to GDS. As a member of the class of ’95 and mother to Class of 2026 kindergartner Zoe, she ably represents and reflects on GDS from various points of view. “GDS teaches students to know what they need to thrive in nearly any situation, how to articulate those needs, how to solve problems, and, when needed, how to advocate for solutions to those problems,” said Jenny. “It’s that skill set, more than any specific lesson, that I believe has been most valuable in my post-GDS-student life and which will arm so many future alums (including my kids) to have an impact on their community and the world at large.” Jenny’s professional background spans the business and education sectors, providing her a unique view into what works in education. Her diverse job history includes stints at the Transformation Management Office of then-Chancellor Michelle Rhee at DC Public Schools as well as at tech-based companies including her current position as President & CEO at LiveSafe, a company leveraging smartphone technology to enhance student and citizen safety. Jenny has a BA and MA from Stanford University, an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a Fulbright at the London School of Economics. “I joined the Board to give back to the community that I love and to grow in all new ways,” said Jenny.

Phil Bronner Joined the board in 2010. Serves on the Executive, Diversity, and Finance committees. “When the kids get out of the car and run into school with joy, there is nothing that makes your heart sing more, and there is nothing more important than fostering that,” says Board member Phil Bronner, explaining why he joined the board. Father to fourth grader Dylan, third grader Sophie, and PK’er Mason, Bronner is proud to be a part of the GDS community at a critical time as it evolves to serve GDS students and the broader community of Washington, DC. He’s passionate about GDS’s history as the first integrated school as well as the school’s focus on diversity, academic excellence, and progressive education. “When we came to our first open house and Gloria described the program, it literally hit every hot button I have,” says Phil. Phil is CEO and Co-Founder of Quad Learning, a start-up working with community colleges to transition students to fouryear institutions and earn their Bachelor’s degree at a lower cost—the latest reflection of his lifelong love for education. He has also served as General Partner for Novak Biddle Venture Partners focusing on investments in education and on the boards of several education companies. Phil holds a BS in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, a JD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law, and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

INNOVATION COMMUNITY EXCELLENCE

“GDS has been an outstanding fit for my sons, who have extremely different interests. When you have a school that can make everyone feel included, comfortable, and nurtured, you just can’t do any better than that,” says Yolanda. “Our lives have really revolved around our GDS community—not just in sports and extracurriculars, but also in allowing us to participate in fulfilling the mission itself. “We were drawn to GDS for three reasons: Its dedication to progressive academic excellence; its leadership in the area of social justice; and its historical commitment to a diverse environment for students, teachers, and parents,” says Yolanda. “We have been extremely happy to have been embraced and included in this wonderful community.” President of YMT Real Estate Investments and Consulting, Yolanda consults on acquisitions, financing, and project management of residential and retail developments. She practiced corporate finance and real estate law in California, Missouri, and Maryland before being appointed by President Clinton in 1996 to the National Credit Union Administration (the federal agency regulating and insuring credit unions nationwide). After six years of public service in the government, she joined Wheat Government Relations as a Chief Financial Officer. Yolanda has a BA from Stanford and a JD from Harvard Law School. “It’s been a privilege to serve on the Board. I’m excited to be a strong advocate for GDS and a steward for this community,” she said. 26

Strategic Planning Implementation

It was with an eye to the future that GDS launched is strategic planning process 18 months ago. With input from 500 members of the GDS community, the resulting plan is ambitious in scope even as it focuses on the everyday, lived experience of our students. This fall, we’ve shared the details of the plan via email, online, and during community gatherings. We’ve also launched parts of the plan—activities are already well under way to take advantage of GDS’s success and grow to fulfill the needs of our students who will be entering the workforce in 2032. In this section of the magazine, we’ll report to you on what we’re focusing on to prepare GDS for the future. Here’s where we stand now:

GOAL 1 -

Differentiated Learning – Engaging students as individuals.

Activities Under Way • Evolve the After-School Program to incorporate an explicit focus on enrichment and student success. • Develop division-specific best practices for communication around student progress. This includes emails, interims, team meetings, conferences, alerts, MyGDS, grade reports, etc. • Provide faculty training in all divisions on written communication around student progress (i.e., narrative reports, interims, emails, etc.). :: Division principals have used staff meeting and training time to hold discussions with faculty and together set expectations on communications with parents; these outcomes will be formalized into written guidelines later this year. • Initiate letter grades in 6th grade.

27

GOAL 2 -

Thriving Teachers – Investing in support, growth, and excellence.

Activities Under Way • Institute a mentoring program for new employees.

:: For both of these activities, our new Dean of Teaching and Learning Dresden Koons has had a busy fall. The new teacher cohort of 2013 experienced the launch of a mentoring program designed to help new employees better integrate into the school culture. As part of the professional growth cycle developed by our faculty committees over the past couple of years, the student feedback process has been formalized and moved completely online. Additionally, every teacher has received an informal classroom visit from Dresden to help her get a broad sense of teaching and learning at GDS across divisions and departments.

JASON PUTSCHÉ PHOTOGRAPHY

• Fine-tune newly created school-wide teacher evaluation program.

GOAL 3 -

Curriculum Evolution – Providing students with skills to collaborate and innovate for tomorrow’s needs.

Activities Under Way • Create next-phase social impact and experiential learning curricula and implementation plans (e.g., mini-mesters, policy institute, MS/HS entrepreneurship curriculum). :: Reinforcing the idea that students should be enriched in experiences that are new and different, we are piloting a comprehensive program this summer where students will learn about social justice or social impact issues. • Thoroughly review current math curriculum and opportunities for its evolution. • Update the math program so that it enables differentiation and supports and challenges a full range of learners. • Adopt the recommendations of the Spring 2013 language review. • Make a recommendation on whether or not to introduce PK-2 languages within the Lower School curriculum.

28

JASON PUTSCHÉ PHOTOGRAPHY

GOAL 4 -

Diversity – Next steps in engaging difference, access, and equity to build foundations for success.

Activities Under Way • Provide professional development and support for faculty in creating equitable classroom settings. :: Our Equity and Diversity Institute launched this fall, providing a forum and discussion group for faculty. For example, participants are currently discussing efforts to integrate context-neutral mindsets into classroom teaching. • The Board ratified a 10-year tuition target, limiting tuition increases in line with the increases of the past three years, the lowest increases in GDS history. • Active fundraising is under way to expand financial aid over the next 10 years.

GOAL 5 -

Infrastructure & Operations – Building frameworks for innovative learning environments.

Activities Under Way

JASON PUTSCHÉ PHOTOGRAPHY

• Develop new Learning Center for the High School.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE STRATEGIC PLAN AT WWW.GDS.ORG/PLANNING.

:: Part of our responsibility to students is providing the supports needed for success as well as the physical structures to promote learning. The learning center at the high school is an intentional step to link these supports for students. To that end, we are designing an intellectual and collaborative learning hub, akin to the Forum serving as the social hub, on the second floor of the high school. A task force spent a year considering key inputs to the space. In November, we hired an architect and expect the new hub to be operational in Fall 2014. • Explore opportunities for campus unification or campus renewal.

ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013

Treasurer’s Report I am pleased to report that 2012-2013 was a successful year for Georgetown Day School, and that our financial position is strong. This is primarily due to: (i) our ability to remain fully enrolled; (ii) the strong philanthropic support of our community; (iii) continued careful cost control by the administration; and (iv) careful management of our budget by the Board and the administration. For the current (2013-14) school year, the GDS Board and administration again worked diligently to meet our ongoing commitment to exercise restraint on expenses and tuition, while creating a budget that permits GDS to continue to meet our high standards of excellence. The result was a tuition increase of 2.8% for the third year in a row, which again represents the lowest tuition increase in over three decades. Generous donations to all of our programs, along with tight cost controls and careful management of our invested funds, have made it possible to keep tuition increases at this low level in recent years. However, while we are ever mindful that any increase in tuition is a significant strain on our families, it will become increasingly difficult to balance our more than $40 million budget with such low tuition increases as the school continues to face cost increases each year. Despite our best efforts to minimize increases, tuition costs inexorably continue to rise. As is the case with most independent schools, these higher tuition levels make it increasingly more difficult for our community to be as economically diverse as it once was and as we at GDS would like it to be. We are working closely with Russell and his innovative team of administrators to explore new ways to deliver and pay for a superb education in a caring community that values the broadest possible access. The Board is also focusing significant time and attention on critically analyzing the long-term financial sustainability of GDS. We undertake this assessment from a position of financial strength in order to continue our legacy of sound financial stewardship and ensure the best possible education for future generations of GDS students. We are extremely fortunate that the extraordinary character and quality of our faculty have allowed GDS to remain a place that changes lives and builds deep, lasting relationships. We pledge continued restraint on expenses and tuition, and commit to continuing this important work so that GDS can attract and retain the best faculty and staff, continue to deliver its superb education, and fulfill our mission for generations to come by broadening access to a GDS education. We deeply appreciate the support of our community—both financial and non-financial. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

ANNUAL FUND – GIFT CLUBS

Every year, our students and faculty set ambitious goals—personal, professional, academic, and athletic. Our Annual Fund donors, volunteers, and staff also set ambitious goals to nurture and support our students’ most audacious aspirations. Our faculty inspire our students to dream big; wherever and however those dreams are realized the Annual Fund is there. The GDS Annual Fund is annual, unrestricted operating support from those donors who understand inspiration can strike anywhere, any time.

Bascom Talley Memorial Fund for Creative Writing In 2012, the parents and friends of Bascom Talley ’04 created a fund in his memory, devoted to one of his favorite subjects: creative writing. The Bascom Talley Memorial Fund for Creative Writing gives student playwrights in the creative writing program the opportunity to work with an established and talented professional director to bring their scripts to life on stage. Students will go through the process that allows a writer to translate scripts to the stage, learning how to edit and re-work a draft script so that it communicates the original intention and produces the ultimate audience experience. Donor Profile: Beano Solomon Her daughter, Virginia Solomon ’99, graduated 14 years ago, and GDS parent Beano Solomon remains an active donor to GDS. “I support GDS because all of these years—and schools—later, GDS remains the school that means the most to my daughter,” says Beano. “I supported GDS when she went there to help grow and support the athletic program. I support it now because I feel strongly about all kids having access to the excellent program that GDS provides, regardless of income.” From some of the first uniforms for GDS sports teams to funding for financial aid, Beano’s legacy at GDS is built on a history of philanthropy in her family. “My parents rolled up their sleeves and supported the causes that meant the most to them,” says Beano. Both Beano and Virginia feel a strong connection to the GDS community. “GDS has been there for us through the years,” says Beano. Adds Virginia: “GDS has been by far the most intellectually rigorous environment I have ever experienced. The combination of passion from the faculty and willingness to share excitement about ideas among the students make it a place that has indelibly shaped my life.”
