History Canterbury has a long history of pre european settlement. The plains were an important area for Maori, with Ngai Tahu the major tribe. The first four ships carrying European settlers arrived in Lyttelton Harbour in 1850.

Hagley Park/Botanic Gardens One of the city’s most striking features – an oasis of greenery stretching across more than 500 acres of the central city. Take a punt down the Avon River as it winds its way gently through the park, and stroll through the stunning Botanic Gardens.

Sumner If you love a cosy village atmosphere as well as the beach, you’re in for a treat! Feel the sand trickling between your toes, enjoy fish and chips on the beach, or sip a refreshing ale or wine on a sunny summer day.

Scott’s Last Expedition Direct from London, Canterbury Museum is excited to be New Zealand’s only venue for the internationally-acclaimed touring exhibition Scott’s Last Expedition. One hundred years after its tragic end, Scott’s last expedition to the Antarctic still resonates as a fantastic tale of endeavour and courage. In 1910, when Scott embarked on the former whaling ship Terra Nova during his second journey to explore the Antarctic, he could not have predicted it would be his last. Tragically, he and four of his comrades died on their return from the South Pole two years later. Developed in association with the Natural History Museum, London, and the Antarctic Heritage Trust, the exhibition Scott’s Last Expedition uncovers Scott the man, the team he took with him to Antarctica and the details of the fascinating Terra Nova expedition. Through engaging experiences, visitors will be able to explore this historic and emotional journey from every angle. The Unfaithful Ways, a Christchurch four-piece band, fuse songs of love, loss, protection and the darker side of human emotion. Grease follows Rydell High School’s Class of ‘59 as they navigate the world of drive-ins, hot rods and teen love. Matthew McFarlane and Lauren Marshall play Danny and Sandy, who fall in love during the summer but find themselves on opposite sides of the bleachers (and cliques) back in high school. “The show is an infectious dose of nostalgia with some of the catchiest tunes in the songbook,” says Gumbley. “This production will positively burst off the stage.”

22 Walking in Christchurch

Christchurch city’s parks and gardens offer an easy stroll on the flat, however there are scenic hill climbs and further afield half or full day hikes for the more athletic. So lace up your shoes and grab your camera. Strolls Hagley Park This sprawling central park is accessible from a number of entrances but most commonly Rolleston Avenue and Armagh Street. Seasonal contrasts delight park visitors from a springtime full of spectacular displays of daffodils and bluebells to the stunning autumn foliage. A walk through the avenues of mature trees, shrubs and flowers that meander alongside the Avon River will show you the heart of our garden city. Tree-shaded pathways lead past a large ornate fountain, sports fields and an excellent children’s playground and swimming pool. Summer often sees the park hosting free outdoor entertainment. On the Avon you can feed the ducks, drift slowly along in a hired punt and spot the trout whilst enjoying the park from water level. Sumner For some sea air stroll along The Esplanade in Sumner. You can start at the south end by the clock tower and walk to Sumner Beach and Village or vice versa. There is a popular children’s playground at the clock tower end and caves to explore at the Sumner Beach end. There are good restaurants in Sumner village and a couple of beachfront cafes if you feel like lunch or coffee in the sun. Halswell Quarry Halswell Quarry is a unique 60.4 hectare park, with an unusual combination of recreational walks, historic sites and botanical collections. Important historic buildings from the quarrymen’s days are being preserved and the once noisy rock face is now a quiet amphitheatre facing onto a parkland of short walks and wetland ponds.

Half Day Christchurch and Canterbury has spectacular scenery and there is no better way to experience it than to go bush and get amongst it. There are many different levels and varieties of walks and it is important that you select a walk that suits your abilities.

Full Day Oxford Forest About an hour north of Christchurch are a variety of walking tracks and picnic areas One of the most popular tracks is the Wharfedale. Another the Ryde Falls Walk is a relatively easy round trip from the View Hill carpark. The bush is a lush mix of rimu, matai and kahikatea (red, black and white pine).

Multi Day Banks Peninsula Track This is a popular track across farmland, reserve, native forest and spectacular volcanic coastline starting from Akaroa. Renowned for its charming accommodation, including a bath under the stars at the Stony Bay Hut. Four days and four nights you’ll never forget. Highly recommended and so popular it is advisable to book well in advance. Malvern Hills Walk Enjoy a one or two day walk through the beautiful Lady Barker Country. Driving in NZ

For detailed information on the New Zealand road code, the official guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations. Road Rules You must be 21 to hire a rental car or mobile home, and show a current driving licence and/or an international licence. New Zealand drives on the left so remember to KEEP LEFT at all times. When turning left, give way to traffic crossing or approaching from your right. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a car to wear a seatbelt at all times while mobile. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it is hands-free. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffic laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.

Tips for Safe Driving Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care not to exceed the signed speed limits as fines can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor. If you notice traffic building up behind you, pull over at a rest area to let it pass. Be extra careful when rejoining traffic and keep to the left. Winding roads, difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200-300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions. Ensure you are at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front. There are around 1,500 public railway level crossings in New Zealand, only half of which are protected by flashing lights and bells or barrier arms. The remaining crossings are protected by Railway Crossing and Give Way or Stop signs. When you see these signs at a crossing, always stop when red lights are flashing and if there are no lights, obey the warning signs, look carefully for trains and only cross the track if there are no trains approaching.

Alcohol Don’t drink and drive. The legal limit is 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. For 20 and under it is ZERO tolerance. Random breath tests are done throughout the country and are compulsory.

Bus services 3 and 29 depart from the terminal outside international arrivals. 3 Airport to Sumner (via Avonhead, University of Canterbury, Westfield Riccarton and the city). 29 Airport to city (via Fendalton). The Comet – Departs from Orchard Rd outside the Antarctic Centre Central Station Metro currently operates most services to and from Central Station in the city (46-50 Lichfield St). At the station you will find the Metroinfo counter – with staff to answer all your travel queries, waiting rooms and platforms where you’ll find the bus you need. Metrostar The Metrostar is orange and travels across the city. It connects leading attractions such as shopping centres, cinemas, recreation centres, schools and the University of Canterbury. Orbiter The Orbiter is green and travels around the city in both directions. It connects you with most shopping centres around Christchurch and the University of Canterbury. These buses run trips every 10 minutes until 9pm at night. The Comet The Comet is silver and provides a connection to outer suburbs in the west and north, travelling from Hornby Hub to Northlands via Avonhead Shopping Centre and the Antarctic Centre. Metrocard is the easy way to travel on Metro. The metrocard does the thinking for you. It’s state of the art technology automatically deducts your fare when you swipe it upon boarding. They cost $10 to purchase and an additional $10 top up is required at the time you purchase it. Get yours from the Metroinfo counter at Central Station. Greymouth Set deep within Canterbury’s Southern Alps, Arthur’s Pass has an unmistakeable mountain feel. Roaring waterfalls, deep ravines, snowcapped peaks that dwarf the valley, glaciers, craggy rock faces and braided rivers all combine in this spectacular National Park. Mountains for miles Arthur’s Pass offers challenges to the serious mountaineer, and its steep country and network of backcountry huts is a haven for hikers. In winter, Temple Basin provides exceptional skiing. Short walks of 1-2 hours take you into magnificent terrain and afford spectacular mountain views. Especially the dramatic Devil’s Punchbowl waterfall. Strong shoes are essential, as well as jackets; even in summer the weather can change without warning. Kiwi live in the Park, though you’re unlikely to see them, and there’s abundant bird life, including bellbirds and fantails. Look out for the kea - the cheeky, green mountain parrot soaring above you that loves to peck anything you leave around! Queenstown Greenstone and Gold European explorers learnt of the pass from maori who crossed it to trade pounamu – greenstone – from Westland to Canterbury.
