Lower in height than Nevis Highwire, but no less exciting are the Kawarau Bridge Bungy – the world’s first and best-loved bungy site – and The Ledge where you can add a twist to you jump or jump in the night during the winter months. Aiming higher still? Jump off a plane – literally! Queenstown Walks
The Queenstown and Southern Lakes region offers a breathtaking array of walks and hikes, from leisurely lakeside strolls to exhilarating heli-hiking tours and world-renowned New Zealand Great Walks. But if you are not up to the challenge of a multi-day hike, there is a choice of day treks that are equally rewarding. Lake Hayes Walkway 2-3 hours, return This easy walk takes you right around the picture perfect Lake Hayes on an eight-kilometre gravel path/boardwalk. Suitable for all levels of fitness, it is shared with riders and has it all – exquisite mountain and lake vistas, a boardwalk protecting local wildlife, historic cottages and a close-up view of some of the area’s most notable homes. The trail can be easily accessed from Arrowtown and Queenstown with a number of parking spots available alongside the lake so you can join the walk at any point. The award-winning Amisfield Bistro is ideal for a spot of indulgence after your walk. Walnut Cottage is also a recommended stop for brunch, lunch or a coffee. Local tip: Walk this loop anti clockwise; it’s easier!
Mt Crichton Loop Track 2-4 hours, return Starting 10 kilometres from Queenstown on Glenorchy Rd, this walk takes you through a beautiful forest of mountain beech and manuka, with red beech in the gullies and provides a fascinating glimpse of the region’s gold mining history. Relics of the mining era include the Twelve Mile Creek Gorge (which was worked intensively by gold miners and still shows signs of sluicing) and the Sam Sumners Hut. Sam Sumners mined the area on and off for 30 years and today his hut provides basic accommodation for hikers. Local tip: A short side track below Sam Sumners Hut leads to an impressive rock fissure.

Gibbston River Trail 2-3 hours, one way One of the most scenic walks in the Wakatipu basin, this track meanders around the scenic Kawarau River. You can start from the Kawarau Suspension Bridge or the Peregrine Wines car park and may take 2-3 hours (wine stops not included!) if you include the Wentworth Bridge Loop. The modified landscape on this trail tells the story of the 19th century gold mining on the Gibbston Flats and the dynamic force of the Kawarau River. The 2.7km Wentworth Bridge Loop, perhaps the most picturesque and historic part of the trail, features 11 timber bridges that were lowered here by helicopter and aim to protect the abundance of archaeological evidence from Otago’s mining heritage, including a collapsed mining tunnel and several large tailraces. Local tip: Take pit stops at the region’s world-renowned local vineyards, including Peregrine Wines with its fabulous building, Gibbston Valley Winery and Waitiri Creek Wines.
Enjoy a wine tasting or stop for lunch at the many wineries along some of the walking trails.

Ben Lomond Summit 6-8 hour, return (3-4 hour return to Ben Lomond Saddle) A popular day trip from Queenstown, this is a fairly rugged all-day tramp that requires moderate to high levels of fitness and forward planning. The reward for making it to the top of the Ben Lomond summit though is one of the best panoramic views of the Wakatipu Basin, with Lake Wakatipu in one direction and Mt Aspiring in the other (visible on clear days). You can cut off about an hour’s climb (One Mile Creek Walk) by taking the gondola from town and starting the walk from there. From there the track travels at a steadily steep angle to the saddle of Ben Lomond; the last pitch to the top of Ben Lomond (1748 metres) is very steep but totally worth the effort. Local tip: Set off early during the cooler, early morning hours as the second half of the climb is above the tree line so the sun can make the hike a warm one.
Jack’s Point Track 2 hour, one way This is another superb day walk with lake and mountain views over undulating open grassland and scattered scrub, ending at Jack’s Point. The track starts at Jardine Park, at the end of Poplar Drive, and ends near the Jack’s Point Clubhouse. This track can be linked up with the Kelvin Peninsula Track, a one to one and a half hour leisurely walk along the Kelvin Heights Peninsula shoreline. You can start this walk either at the Kawarau Bridge, at Willow Place off Peninsula Road or at the Kelvin Heights golf course. Local tip: Jack’s Point Track is a shades trail with riders. Respect others, respect the rules and respect the track. Maps and trail information are on hand at local information centres and Department of Conservation (DOC) offices. Queenstown has it all, from easy scenic tracks, spectacular lakeside and backcountry trails, to a jump park, heli-biking and the Southern Hemisphere’s only gondola accessed downhill mountain biking. Downhill Mountain Biking New Zealand’s first gondola-assisted ‘bike lift’ has opened up a whole new dimension for mountain bikers in the heart of Queenstown. Riders can load their bikes onto the iconic Skyline Gondola and enjoy panoramic lake and mountain views as they’re lifted high above Queenstown to the bike park. More than 30km of trails cater for everyone from beginners to advanced downhill riders. Queenstown also offers the most heli-bike options in the world with more than 400km of trails across five mountain ranges. Helibiking is a great opportunity to experience amazing descents and epic scenery on a trip tailored to suit each rider’s ability. Treble Cone also offers some spectacular lift assisted downhill riding.
Technical Mountain Biking The Queenstown Mountain Biking Club was established by passionate locals to further mountain biking in the region. They have developed a trail guide which grades the rides in the region, and have created a number of mountain biking parks like the Wynyard Freestyle terrain park and the Gorge Road jump park, a favourite among BMX riders. About 5km out of town on the Glenorchy Road are the Seven Mile MTB trails which are a mix of cross country and intermediate downhill trails through a forest of pine trees. There are plenty of different lines catering for casual rider to the downhill expert.
Easy Recreational Rides The 110km Queenstown Trail is a world-class experience. This scenic bike ride through the greater Queenstown area takes you along the spectacular shores of two iconic lakes and the banks of three famous South Island rivers. Discover historic Arrowtown, the vineyards of Gibbston and beautiful Lake Wakatipu - all at your own pace!

Multi Day Rides Just an hour from Queenstown is Clyde and the start of the famous Otago Central Rail Trail. This three to four day (150km) ride along the old railway line to Middlemarch is a very scenic and historic journey into Otago’s harsh and daring past. You’ll be amazed by some of the early engineering feats of the pioneers. There is a range of accommodation on the trail from comfortable bed & breakfasts to holiday parks and campgrounds, and best of all, many of the trail operators will transport your luggage daily to ensure you can just relax and enjoy Central Otago’s natural beauty.
Bike Services It’s easy to hire gear, join a tour or find a heli-bike guide. Talk to a local company, sports shop or information centre and arm yourself with maps, weather forecasts, equipment and advice before you set off. For riding made easy, Charge About Queenstown offer electric mountain bikes. See 24 hours in Queenstown page 13.
An experienced local guide can make your trip totally unforgettable.

Queenstown Trail The newest addition to this region’s scrumptious travel buffet, the 110km Queenstown Trail links a series of trails within the Wakatipu Basin, meandering through Queenstown, Frankton, Lake Hayes, the historic gold mining town of Arrowtown and the wine producing Gibbston area. The best part about the trail is the complete solitude it offers, yet you’re never too far away from a great coffee or a cheeky wine.
Favourite rides on the trail ARROWTOWN INTO GIBBSTON: This ride zigzags across five bridges, through country lanes to the historic Kawarau Bridge (home of AJ Hackett’s bungy) before getting into the valley of vines, Gibbston, for a taste of some of its world-famous pinot noir.

ARROWTOWN RETURN VIA LAKE HAYES AND KAWARAU RIVER: Get a taste of all that makes this area so special – exquisite mountain views, remote riverside picnic spots, the finest wines and food, art and plenty of fresh air! QUEENSTOWN TO ARROWTOWN VIA KAWARAU RIVER AND LAKE HAYES: Duck and dive alongside beautiful lakes and rivers, through back-country routes, revealing galleries, homes, trees and spectacular stonework. QUEENSTOWN TO JACK’S POINT: This spectacular track is a ride of two halves – the first 12kms is an easy. The next leg is tougher with the last 2km to Jack’s Point being the steepest part of the climb, but riding the moody tussocks and natural schist through this Lord of the Rings landscape is an out worldly experience and totally worth the effort. It’s not just Queenstown’s magnificent southern scenery that will leave you breathless. Adrenalin junkies can challenge themselves with the exciting range of activities on offer, while those who prefer things a little more relaxed can enjoy a leisurely stroll or soak in the hot pools. Bungy jumping, white water rafting, jet boating, tandem paragliding and skydiving are all right on your doorstep in Queenstown, with The Remarkables mountain range as a dramatic backdrop. In autumn it is still warm enough to enjoy most of the region’s summer pursuits, but with the addition of the vibrant autumn foliage. After testing your nerves on a bungy jump or canyon swing, why not try your luck at Queenstown’s casino. You certainly don’t have to be a daredevil to enjoy Queenstown. Enjoy the magnificent scenery aboard the town’s historic steamship or up in a hot air balloon; go hiking or visit an award-winning winery. For awe inspiring views of Queenstown, look no further than Skyline Queenstown, the journey up Bob’s Peak in the gondola is only half the fun. The Skyline luge is a must do whilst in Queenstown.

The Lord of the Rings cast and crew fell in love with the dramatic mountain scenery of this region, and you will too. ”Tolkien’s world was one of the deep hidden valleys, barren wastelands, remote mystical mountains and lush, low valleys,” says Peter Jackson. The majestic beauty of New Zealand’s adventure capital and the surrounding area fits this description perfectly. Whether you are a full enthusiast or have just seen one of the films, it is an amazing opportunity to view some of the key locations used for this epic trilogy. Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu was used as the location for some scenes involving ‘Lothlorien’, home to the Lady of the Forest, Galadriel. The river Kawarau, which flows from Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu to Cromwell, became part of the Great River Anduin, and fans can now raft past the site of Argonath (the Pillar of the Kings). The pillars themselves, of course, were computer-generated.

Queenstown isn’t just about the adventure, so before you overdose on adrenalin take time to toast the region’s natural beauty, refresh yourself after a day of shopping, or unwind after a day of outdoor activity. In Queenstown you won’t have to look far for a great place to quench your thirst; from friendly pubs to popular bistros spilling out onto the pavement, and let’s not forget the sophisticated wine bars where you can settle in for a cosy night and sip the stunning world-class wines that the region has to offer. If you enjoy socialising and you’re looking for a fantastic night out, then you’ll be pleased to know that Queenstown is often referred to as the party capital of New Zealand. Queenstown’s busy bars and clubs frequently have live music and fantastic drink specials, and you can even join in on a bar crawl, which will take you to the hot spots of the city. You may be used to putting a few ice cubes in your drinks, but why not have your drinks within an ice bar? Rug up and chill out with some mates and make some new friends in an ultra-cool atmosphere of an ice bar.

Arrowtown
Nestled below the beautiful peaks that surround the sparkling Arrow River, Arrowtown was once a bustling gold rush village, home to some 7000 people in its peak. Today, Arrowtown is a charming, quaint town with spectacular scenery in the heart of the Southern Lakes District. A 20-minute drive from Queenstown, Arrowtown’s tree-lined avenues serve to frame the town’s history. The main streets are lined with heritage buildings and historic miner cottages. Gold was discovered in the area in 1862, the first gold discovery in the Wakatipu. Chinese miners were invited to the town in an effort to stimulate the economy, and the remains of their separate miners’ village can be seen on the banks of Bush Creek. Arrowtown has become a favourite to visitors looking for an alternative to busy Queenstown. Boutique shops, galleries, bars and restaurants make the town the ideal place to browse, while the Lakes District Museum offers a memorable exhibition of life in a gold rush town.
A quaint town in an alpine setting, Arrowtown is a great alternative to bustling Queenstown.
© APBA
The alpine setting hosts the picturesque Arrowtown Trails, a cluster of attractive walking and cycle tracks. Arrowtown is recognised as the walking and biking centre of Wakatipu, with over 15 trails leaving from Arrowtown. These range from one-hour circuits to all-day expeditions; a trail map is available at the Lakes District Museum.

Lakes District Museum Arrowtown’s unique museum, established in 1948, presents an authentic picture of early Maori in the Southern Lakes District. Exhibits cover the harsh pioneering days of the European settlers, and the exciting gold rush era. The museum complex includes the town’s original Bank of New Zealand premises, the bank’s stables and the town’s baker’s oven, all built circa 1875. Exhibits are family friendly and hands-on learning is always encouraged.

Lake Wanaka
Wanaka is perfect for those looking for all the splendour of the southern lakes, but with a more relaxed atmosphere than neighbouring Queenstown. Attractions and adventure sports are all within easy reach of Lake Wanaka. Take a scenic cruise on the lake, fish at one of the many accessible spots, or venture into the hills for mountain biking, hiking and climbing. A great selection of restaurants, cafés and nightlife will leave you spoilt for choice. For a day family friendly activities there is Puzzling World, fun for all ages, or Paradiso, the world’s comfiest cinema, where the smell of freshly baked brownies will have your mouth watering by intermission. If you have the time then don’t miss the chance to explore the Matukituki Valley, the access point to the spectacular Mount Aspiring National Park and an hour’s drive west of Wanaka. The three to four-hour Rob Roy Track is a photographer’s delight, with swing bridges to test your vertigo and jaw-dropping alpine views of the Rob Roy glacier and surrounding mountains. This region’s special features were recognised nationally in 1964 when Mount Aspiring National Park was created, and internationally in 1990, with the establishment of the Te Wähipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage area. A hub for a number of South Island touring routes, Wanaka can be easily accessed from Christchurch via the MacKenzie Country, and is a perfect night stop for anyone visiting Mt Cook, or crossing over the main divide through Haast Pass to the rugged West Coast. Connectabus provide daily coach services between Queenstown and Wanaka. Allow 1 & 1/2 hours travel time. See ad page 1. An alternative and shorter route to Lake Wanaka is over the spectacular Crown Range Road. Drive carefully, as this road is steep and windy.

Cromwell

Nestled on the shores of Lake Dunstan, Cromwell has been shaped by gold, fruit and hydro-electricity. From the mid to late 1800s, the town was the main centre for the goldrush areas of Central Otago. Discover this colourful era at the Gold Fields Mining Centre and at the historic goldmining sites of Bannockburn, Bendigo and Kawarau. During the 1920s, a local irrigation scheme led to the development of the region’s famous stonefruit orchards, and its arid climate makes the region unique for cherry and apricot growing, as well as peaches, nectarines and plums. Grapes are also grown now, and the district’s wineries are producing some quality wines that are well worth sampling.

Cromwell has numerous walks to enjoy, with the mountains as a stunning backdrop. The Bannockburn Bridge to Goldfields Mining Centre is probably the best walk through gold mining heritage in the country, according to Terry Emmitt from the Cromwell Promotion Group. “There are large areas of hand-stacked tailings which shows the incredible amount of work required to extract gold,” Terry Emmitt. When you return from the walk, reward yourself with a glass of wine at one of the local pubs.

Cromwell
Cromwell underwent major transformation in the 1980s when the Clyde Dam power station and Lake Dunstan were constructed. Parts of the old town were flooded and the town centre was relocated. Some of Cromwell’s historic buildings were reconstructed and can be explored at Old Cromwell Town. Old Cromwell Town is also the base for numerous local artists and artisans and is open daily. Have a browse around the museum buildings and visit working artists and shops throughout the area, with options to suit different tastes and budgets. Make sure you spend some time exploring this unique piece of New Zealand’s pioneering past. It’s also worth paying a visit to the Cromwell and Districts Museum and Information Centre, which you’ll find in The Mall. The museum has displays on Cromwell township, family life, the discovery of gold, the Chinese influence, pioneer women, and the history of its bridges and hotels.

Nowhere is New Zealand’s wild beauty displayed to better effect than in Fiordland’s tumbling waterfalls, glacial lakes, remote fiords and towering granite peaks. Fiordland National Park was established in 1952, and covers an area of 1.2 million hectares. Early Maori hunted, fished and gathered pounamu here for hundreds of years, and in 1773 Captain Cook and his crew became the first Europeans to visit Fiordland, spending five weeks in Dusky Sound. Cook’s maps and descriptions soon attracted sealers and whalers to the region, but the sheer steepness of the terrain, the incredible isolation, and the wettest climate in New Zealand deterred all but the hardiest from settlement.

From Te Anau it is a short scenic boat ride across the lake to the magical Te Anau Glowworm Caves. Alternatively, take a cruise up the lake to Glade House – the starting point of the Milford Track. Float plane, fixed wing and helicopter rides around Lake Te Anau and Fiordland offer spectacular views of the mountain scenery.

The town of Te Anau, located on the shores of the South Island’s largest lake, is the gateway to Fiordland National Park. It makes an ideal base for exploring the region or embarking on your choice of three of New Zealand’s Great Walks – the Milford, Kepler or Routeburn tracks.

Just outside Te Anau, en route to Manapouri, the Te Anau Wildlife Centre houses a variety of native birds, including the rare flightless Takahe. Keep a look out for other native animals when you’re out and about, including yellow-crowned parakeets, yellowheads (mohua), robins, kaka, bats and the South Island saddleback. More common sights are tomtits, fantails, tui, bellbirds, keas and native pigeons, along with teals, ducks and grebes.

Doubtful Sound
At 421 metres deep, Doubtful Sound is the deepest of the fiords. It is long and winding with three distinct ‘arms’ and several stunning waterfalls between Deep Cove and the open ocean, a distance of around 40.4 kilometres. There are many ways to experience Doubtful Sound – by kayak or cruise, as a day trip or on an overnight experience. Tours start with a 30km cruise across beautiful Lake Manapouri, the second deepest lake in New Zealand. Most trips also include a visit 2km underground into the Manapouri hydroelectric Power Station, an amazing feat of engineering and an important part of the region’s history. Enjoy the spectacular 22km drive over the Wilmot Pass road to Deep Cove, the entrance to Doubtful Sound. Be amazed by the rugged mountains blanketed in dense sub-tropical rainforest, waterfalls, glacier-shaped valleys and the pristine waterways. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, such as Fiordland Crested penguins, dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and sea birds, which can be seen on many of the small islets at the entrance of the fiord. The fiord is also home to one of the southernmost populations of bottlenose dolphins, so don’t forget your camera!
Doubtful Sound is sometimes called the Sound of Silence.

Milford Sound
Milford Sound is the sparkling gem in Fiordland’s crown, drawing thousands of visitors each year. For many, the 1692 metre Mitre Peak is a highlight, jutting from the still waters of the sound. It’s 16km from the head of the sound to the open sea and the sheer sides of this drowned glacial valley rise some 1200m above sea level. Day and overnight cruises explore the sound, but make sure you book in advance. En route, you’ll get to see Milford Sound’s dramatic waterfalls, including the Bowen, Fairy, Sutherland and Stirling Falls, as well as the iconic Mitre Peak, Anita Bay and the underwater observatory at Harrison Cove. Day cruises depart from the wharf complex, a short walk from the Blue Duck Café & Bar and carpark. Nature lovers have a real treat in store, with a huge variety of wildlife including native dolphins, seals and penguins, and sea kayaking tours offer another great way of exploring the fiord. It takes about two and a half hours to drive from Te Anau to Milford. One of the world’s finest walks, the 53.5km Milford Track, annually welcomes over 14,000 visitors, and the Hollyford Track offers dramatic views of the mountains, lakes and coastline, while the Kepler traverses beech forest, mountain tops and a glacial valley.

Today the Franz Josef Glacier (Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere, or tears of the avalanche girl) offers visitors the chance to experience the power and awe-inspiring beauty of this ever-changing glacial environment, all within easy driving and walking distance from the main highway. There are a number of glacier experiences on offer, including walking up the glacier valley floor, enjoying the lush New Zealand bush at its pristine best, or doing a short helicopter ride onto the ice to hike amongst the amazing crevasses and ice formations. There are a variety of natural attractions just a short distance from the Franz Josef Glacier Village, including rainforests, waterfalls and lakes. Head to Lake Matheson for amazing mirror reflections of the Southern Alps. The visitor centre has a brochure detailing walks in the area.
