Welcome to Christchurch & the Canterbury region. Whether you’ve arrived by car or emerged blinking into the light after 30 hours on a plane, Christchurch offers you a warm welcome. Following the devastating 2010-2011 earthquakes, the city has re-emerged as a vibrant centre; a true example of good-as-gold Kiwi resilience and some very creative residents. It’s an exciting time to visit the city and see some bold and visionary initiatives working alongside Christchurch’s traditional attractions.
Christchurch at a Glance Sumner A Christchurch favourite: Sumner is a cosy beachside village where you can stroll along the promenade and peruse the menus of the many fine dining establishments. Brighton Another lovely seaside suburb, Brighton invites you to swim or surf its patrolled waters, or stroll the length of the famous pier. At the pier’s end, you’ll often find families enjoying a relaxed spot of fishing. Banks Peninsula & Akaroa The fist-like peninsular south of Christchurch has a varied and interesting history; formed by a volcanic eruption eight million years ago, the scenic grandeur of the landscape was a base for the Ngai Tahu tribe, then sold in 1838 to a French whaling captain, but was declared as British territory in 1840 before an official French envoy could claim it. However, the pretty settlement of Akaroa retains its French flavour. Longer tracks include Bowenvale Valley and Kennedy’s Bush to Worsleys Track, both around 8.5km. The 3.5km Rapaki Track is quite popular, with many locals using it after work. If you want to ride this track at a less busy time, head out during the day. Locals also recommend taking advantage of the downhill ride into Lyttleton to explore the area’s new cafes and eateries.
The first of the Great Rides to open, the 64km St James Cycle Trail takes 1-2 days to complete. The trail starts at the iconic St James Station near Hanmer Springs and is divided into four sections of varying grades. Easy to intermediate riders are advised to stick to the beginnings and ends of the trail as the central section (grade 4) caters for more advanced mountain bikers. From soaring mountain peaks and alpine meadows to grassy river flats, the trail features a stunning mix of scenery.
Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail The Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail is the longest continuous ride in New Zealand and part of the Nga Haerenga - The New Zealand Cycle Trail. Starting from Aoraki Mount Cook, the trail descends more than 600m and travels approximately 300km to the coastal town of Oamaru. The scenic trail encompasses a World Heritage National Park, glacial fed lakes, hydro dam lakes, golden tussock land, limestone cliffs, Maori Rock art and more.
November to April is the best time to ride this trail. The popularity of the St James Cycle Trail prompted a family friendly ride called the Homestead Run to be opened in 2013. The 15km loop starts from the St James Station Homestead and is perfect for beginners, children and off-road wheelchair users. From pristine ski fields of the Southern Alps, to the expansive farmed flatlands of the Canterbury Plains, whether you’re looking for snow sports, seaside villages, alpine hot springs or braided rivers, this region is packed with adventure and leisure activities. While staying in Christchurch, you’ll get a better idea of the people of Canterbury, a determined bunch who like to take up challenges, and have claimed many New Zealand (and world) firsts. In South Canterbury at the beginning of the 20th century it is said that the first powered flight occurred a year before that of the Wright brothers; Bill Hamilton conceived of and perfected jetboating, Sir Ernest Rutherford was educated in Christchurch before going on to split the atom and be awarded New Zealand’s first Nobel Prize; Aoraki/ Mt Cook was Sir Edmund Hillary’s training ground before he summited Mt Everest; and Lyttelton was the final departure point for many historic Antarctic explorers like Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shakleton. You, of course, can follow in their footsteps. Visit the Air Force Museum in Christchurch or pay homage to an airbourne innovator in Timaru; take a thrilling jetboat ride; learn about natural sciences at the Canterbury museum or understand what life was like in the Edwardian era at Ferrymead; be awed by the might and beauty of Aoraki/Mt Cook (ski it from July - October) and chat with penguins as you learn about life on the ice at the Antarctic Experience. Perhaps you’d prefer a soak in an alpine thermal resort, or the quiet ambience of a visit to a sun-drenched winery. Maybe you’d like to glimpse one of the world’s rarest dolphins or be impressed by a Sumatran tiger at an open range zoo; whatever experience you seek, in Christchurch and Canterbury you’ll find everything you need to create a memorable holiday.

There’s something cooking in the Christchurch restaurant and dining scene: new dining establishments are plating up, old favourites have had fresh facelifts and menus, and perky pop-up cafés and bars are brewing ales and atmosphere to help you further enjoy this region. From early morning until late into the evening, there’s a range of eateries and drinking establishments that will serve you the very best of local cuisine. Try out freshly caught salmon, mouth-watering seafood, world-famous New Zealand lamb, organic locally-grown produce, fish and chips at a seaside village, good pub-inspired dining, pop-up bars, coffee houses and wonderful noodle bars. Christchurch’s many and varied eateries are not restricted to the city centre; head to the suburbs such as Addington, Sumner, Harewood, Merivale, Ferrymead and Sydnham for the culinary gems. Lyttleton, only 20 minutes from the city centre, is home to funky cafes that will delight and surprise in their fare. Around 90 minutes from Christchurch, Akaroa is a gourmet paradise with imaginative chefs making the most of the abundant seasonal produce. Expect a French bent to the eateries here, but with a Kiwi twist. Head to Kaikoura for seafood, and Waipara Valley for world-class wines and a long lunch in a picturesque vineyard.
Christchurch has something to satisfy all tastes and budgets.

Lyttelton & Akaroa Millions of years ago, two volcanoes blew apart, creating Banks Peninsula, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Today, the harbours of Lyttelton and Akaroa fill their craters. Just over an hour from Christchurch, Akaroa is the peninsula’s romantic centre, where French settlers were the first Europeans to arrive. The distinctly Gallic flavour remains in street names like Rue Jolie and Rue Lavaud, colonial architecture, waterfront cafés, a number of much sought-after wines, and speciality cheeses from Barry’s Bay.
Trains
Akaroa celebrated its heritage in October 2013 with its biannual French Festival, but visitors can appreciate it every day of the year, with excellent cafés and gourmet restaurants lining the harbourside. Visit a lavender farm or winery, opt for a cruise on the harbour, or swim with Hector’s dolphins, the world’s rarest dolphin.
Christchurch is the starting point for two scenic train journeys – the TranzAlpine, which travels through Arthur’s Pass to Greymouth on the West Coast, and the Coastal Pacific, a summer service (October to April) which follows the coastline north to Picton.
With its stands of original native bush, seal colonies and nesting penguins, Banks Peninsula is ideal for exploring on foot, whether for an hour or two, or over several days on the southern Banks Peninsula Track.

Kaikoura’s rich history is tied to the sea. In Maori legend, Maui braced himself with a foot on the peninsula as he ‘fished up’ the North Island. Today, you can find several pa here, the remains of early Maori settlement. The first European settlers established whaling stations along this coastline, but today Kaikoura is a safe haven for the ocean’s largest creatures. Learn more about Kaikoura’s early history at Fyffe House, the area’s first whaler’s cottage, and at the Kaikoura Museum. Marine life: Not far offshore, the seabed falls steeply away into the 2000m deep Hikorangi Trench, bringing an abundance of marine life, including several whale species, within a few kilometres of the coast. Arthur’s Pass National Park
Mackenzie Country
Roaring waterfalls, deep ravines, craggy rock faces and braided rivers, all combine to give this spectacular national park an unmistakable mountain feel. European explorers learnt of the pass from Maori who crossed regularly from Westland to Canterbury to trade pounamu (greenstone). Early pioneers built the road in less than a year when the West Coast gold rush struck.
Named after James MacKenzie, a 19th century sheep rustler, the Mackenzie Country fills Canterbury’s southwest corner, and lies in the shadow of Aoraki/Mt Cook. With a number of major hydro dams, the region is the powerhouse of New Zealand.
Its steep country and network of backcountry huts are a haven for hikers, with overnight and multi-day trekking options. Shorter walks of one to two hours take you into magnificent terrain and afford spectacular mountain views, especially the dramatic Devil’s Punchbowl waterfall walk. Strong shoes are essential, and take a jacket, as even in summer the weather can change without warning. Look out for the kea – the cheeky green mountain parrot native to New Zealand; if you leave your boots outside then expect to lose your laces. Getting there: Shuttles run daily. TranzAlpine train – spectacular in spring. Arthur’s Pass is on SH 73 on the main road to Greymouth and the West Coast. A comfortable two hours. Distance 150km. The road through Porter’s Pass and Arthur’s Pass is steep and windy. Can be icy and may require chains in the winter months.
Take in views of fertile farmlands, deep gorges and a chiselled alpine landscape on the TranzAlpine train journey.
To appreciate the region’s true scale and grandeur, experience it from the air in a scenic flight around Aoraki/Mt Cook. Aoraki means “cloud piercer” and at 3754m, the Maori title is perfect for New Zealand’s tallest mountain. Mt Cook National Park offers the entire range of alpine activity – mountaineering, glacier exploration, tramping, heli-skiing and ski-touring, including guided skiing on the Tasman glacier. The Mackenzie Country towns of Fairlie, Tekapo and Twizel provide the base for many more outdoor activities. The region’s lakes offer windsurfing, sailing and superb fishing, while on land you’ll find mountain and heli-biking, rock climbing and hiking. The area is also world-renowned as a gliding destination where many world records have been set. Getting there: Daily buses run to the region’s major towns. From Fairlie, follow Route 8 through Burke’s Pass village, over the pass and into the MacKenzie Basin and Tekapo. Distance 226km to Tekapo, 3 - 3.5 hours.
Clear starry skies, turquoise lakes, emerald green valleys ... Mackenzie Country is a magical part of the country.
