Celebrating an inspiring and groundbreaking decade of documentaries, the 10th Documentary Edge Festival is returning to Auckland’s Q Theatre. The theatre will be transformed into a documentarian’s one-stop hub with films, Q and A, and special events. Whether you’re in a mood for rugged beaches and native bush, walking along the coast or exploring a rich heritage, Auckland’s has it all. Discover the city on one of these fantastic walks. DAY WALKS Coast to Coast Walk 4-5 hours, 16km From Waitemata to the Manukau Harbour, this walk takes you along landscapes that has been shaped volcanoes and people; from the Maori who have occupied the land for more than 600 years to the remnants of our colonial past. Starting at the Viaduct Harbour, the walkway ducks and dives into inner city streets, over Auckland Domain and Mt Eden, and through Cornwall Park/One Tree Hill before coming to Onehunga Wharf. Te Henga Walkway 4 hours, 8km From Te Henga (Bethells Beach) to Constable Rd in Muriwai, this cliff top walk means some tough climbs, but the views are of the wild west coast from the top are well worth the effort. The walkway is now part of the multi-day Hillary Track. It can get muddy and slippery after rain and slips are visible – stick to the marked path. Among other stunning walks in the majestic Waitakere rages are the Kitekite Falls Track that takes you to the 40m multi-tiered Kitekite waterfalls, Upper Nihotupu Reservoir Walk and Fairy Falls Walk. Auckland City Heritage Walks Peek into the past and enjoy the present with one of the heritage walks available in Auckland City. The uptown heritage walk will take you to Aotea Square (once a swamp, but now a popular public space) and iconic buildings such as the Town Hall, Civic Theatre and the Auckland Art Gallery. Rangitoto Summit Walk 1 hour each way, 4.6km Walk up to the summit of Rangitoto, Auckland’s youngest volcano and home to the world’s largest pohutukawa forest. There are alternative routes to the summit (allow extra time), including a track that takes in the fascinating lava tunnels and caves – bring a torch if you want to explore. At the summit another track circles the rim of the crater and offers panoramic views. MULTI-DAY WALKS Hillary Track 4 days, 77km The Hillary Track epitomises the adventure and personal achievement that Sir Edmund Hillary, after whom the track is named, championed. A true wilderness experience, it takes walkers through the diverse, often challenging, West Coast. The self-guided tramp connects various tracks and basic backcountry campgrounds (advanced bookings required on these). Aotea Track 2–3 days, 30km Hop on a ferry to the Great Barrier Island to explore the beautiful Aotea Track that loops the central mountainous area of the island. Head west and explore Waitakere’s lush native bush, enjoy a stroll on the wild black sand beaches or relax in one of the wineries.

Shuttle services run daily from central Auckland to the West Coast beaches. If you have your own transport, make a pit-stop in Titirangi village for a coffee, and perhaps even catch the Titirangi Village Market (last Sunday of the month) at Titirangi War Memorial Hall from 10am until 2pm.

• Head along the Kitekite track (1.8km) from the Glen Esk Road carpark at Piha and you’ll see a pretty three-tiered waterfall.

Continue west along Scenic Drive to Arataki Visitor Centre, the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, which covers more than 16,000 hectares of native rainforest and coastline. Packed with fascinating exhibits, the visitor centre alone could keep you entertained for hours, but if you’re keen to stretch your legs there are more than 250km of walking trails to choose from. Tracks start directly from the centre, with a wide range of others just a short drive away. Try Fair Falls track, or explore Cascade Kauri Park, located in the heart of the Ark in the Park conservation project.

• Adrenalin fans will enjoy Woodhill Forest, which has a network of mountain-bike trails and quadbiking adventures.

• Watch the wild waves from the clifftops at Muriwai Beach or the Piha Beach lookout.

Its 600-year-old volcanic cone is clearly visible from many parts of the city and you’ll be rewarded with 360-degree views if you hike to the summit (259 metres high). For those who prefer a more leisurely stroll, try the easier tracks that skirt the coastline. Don’t forget your lunch as there aren’t any shops on Rangitoto. Fullers Ferries operate to Rangitoto.

A little further away, Great Barrier Island is rugged and remote and has beautiful surf beaches, lush native bush, plus fantastic hiking and birdlife. The island is home to the historic remains of copper and silver mines, shipwrecks, a whaling station, timber mills and kauri dams. Great Barrier Island can be accessed by the SeaLink Ferry or there are regular flights.

Waiheke Island is a day-trippers’ dream and a fantastic place to take a retreat from city life. It takes just half an hour to get to Waiheke and you’ll soon ease into the easy-going island lifestyle. There is a vibrant arts and crafts scene and many vineyards dotted around the island, so make sure you sample some of the local drops. Fullers and SeaLink ferries run a regular service to Waiheke.

At Kawau Island, tour Mansion House, the stately residence of New Zealand’s former Governor, Sir George Grey. This scenic island has a range of walking tracks leading to Maori pa sites and the ruins of old copper mines. Access to Kawau is by boat. Catch a ferry or water taxi from Sandspit, near Warkworth, 64km north of Auckland.

Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf Islands are just moments from the city but feel like a world away. Enjoy a bushwalk, listen for native birds and explore the sandy beaches that are all right on the city’s doorstep.

Auckland Airport

The Auckland International and Domestic Airport lies 21km south-west of the Auckland CBD at the edge of the Manukau Harbour in Mangere. Airport Transport Travel options to and from Auckland Airport (phone 09 275 0789) include taxi, shuttle bus and The Airbus, as well as rental vehicles (see page 41)which may be picked up/dropped off at the airport or nearby. From central Auckland, taxis take around 30 minutes (allow an hour at peak times) and cost from $50-$65. Shuttle buses cost less (around $30 per person but less for a group) and take longer, as they pick up and drop off en route. The Airbus (0800 10 30 80, www.airbus. co.nz) runs every 15 minutes throughout the day, stopping close to most major hotels and backpackers. An adult fare costs $16 one way and $28 return. Transfers take 40-50 minutes. Inter-terminal Bus A free inter-terminal bus connects the international and domestic terminals. The bus departs every 20 minutes from outside the arrivals hall.

Driving To/From Auckland Airport From the Airport

Take the main exit road (George Bolt Memorial Drive) to the intersection with SH20. Follow the signs for Auckland City which will take you onto the motorway. Leave the motorway, turn right into Queenstown Road and continue straight ahead through the roundabout into Pah Road, which becomes Manukau Road. Continue up Manukau Road, turn left at the traffic lights into Alpers Avenue. At the end of Alpers Avenue, turn right into Gillies Avenue and join the motorway to the city, northern and western suburbs. The last exit to the city is Nelson Street (the left-hand lane).

To the Airport On the southern motorway, take the Gillies Avenue exit. Turn right into Gillies Avenue then left at the lights into Owens Road. At the end of the road, turn right into Manukau Road (SH12) and follow the route to the airport, signposted with a white aeroplane on a blue square.
