Christchurch at a Glance
Christchurch boasts a vibrant city with cultural activities, great shopping, dining and attractions. Public transport makes getting around simple. You can reach all areas of the city quickly by bus. Check online at www.metroinfo.co.nz
History Canterbury has a long history of pre-European settlement. The plains were an important area for Maori, with Ngai Tahu the major tribe. The first four ships carrying European settlers arrived in Lyttelton Harbour in 1850.
Hagley Park/Botanic Gardens One of the city’s most striking features – an oasis of greenery stretching across more than 500 acres of the central city. Take a punt down the Avon River as it winds its way gently through the park, and stroll through the stunning Botanic Gardens.
Sumner If you love a cosy village atmosphere as well as the beach, you’re in for a treat! Feel the sand trickling between your toes, enjoy fish and chips on the beach, or sip a refreshing ale or wine on a sunny summer day.
Brighton Brighton is another of the city’s seaside suburbs, famous for its pier. Learn to surf, swim safely in patrolled waters, or stroll the length of the pier as it juts several hundred metres into the ocean where you’ll often find families enjoying a relaxed spot of fishing.
Bottle Lake Forest Park About 20 minutes from the city centre in the north-east corner, Bottle Lake offers an extensive playground of cool, forest tracks for walking, mountainbiking or horse riding.
Exploring Canterbury Experience the wider Canterbury region with luxurious hot springs, white-knuckle rafting, hot air ballooning, jetboating, swimming with dolphins and watching whales, premium wineries and the mountains of Arthur’s Pass and Mount Cook/Aoraki national parks – all easily accessible within hours of Christchurch.
Walkways There are walking tracks – easy or challenging – throughout Christchurch. From a riverside stroll to an afternoon or overnight hike – Canterbury offers walking for all levels.

Quake City
New Zealand Opera presents Don Giovanni Don Giovanni, New Zealand Opera’s first main-stage production for Christchurch, is one of the greatest of all operas. With a hedonistic womaniser at its heart who will stop at nothing – even murder – in the pursuit of pleasure, Mozart’s masterpiece has become one of the most popular in the repertoire, drawing rapturous audiences since its première in 1788. This new production, directed by Christchurch-born Sara Brodie, stars English baritone Mark Stone in the title role, with Australian soprano Lisa Harper-Brown as Donna Anna, and top New Zealand singers Jonathan Lemalu (bass baritone) and Anna Leese (soprano) as Leporello and Donna Elvira. New Zealand Opera’s Director of Music, Wyn Davies, takes the baton. Sung in Italian with English surtitles. Opera for Groups offers great incentives for social or corporate groups, including a 10% discount on each ticket for groups of 10 or more people plus one ticket free for every 10 purchased. Call New Zealand Opera for more information. Tel 0800 696 737. CBS Canterbury Arena, Christchurch Wed 21, Thu 22 August – 7pm, Sat 24 August – 2pm matinee.

ThingsWhat’s to See & Hot Do
Earthquake Brings Innovation During your stay in Christchurch you are sure to see examples of businesses dusting themselves off after the earthquakes, and rebuilding to be brighter and better than they were pre-quake. We’re featuring two examples of how Christchurch has harnessed the spirit of innovation and hope.
The Cardboard Cathedral Buildings made from cardboard are not just the realm of childcare centres – world renowned architects also use cardboard as a building material. The quakes toppled the much-loved old stone Christchurch Cathedral, leaving Cathedral Square without its namesake, and the people without their place of worship. So Japanese architect Shigeru Ban who specialises in ‘post-disaster temporary buildings’ was commissioned to design a 700-seat transitional cathedral. The Cardboard Cathedral is made internally of 98 huge cardboard tubes, and while described as temporary, is being built as a permanent structure with an expected lifespan of more than 50 years. The new design references some of the old features of the fallen cathedral, and has even been named by the Sydney Morning Herald as the ninth best new attraction for globetrotters to visit in 2013. Located in Latimer Square at the site of the St John’s church and near the site of the CTV building collapse, the cardboard cathedral is a place of remembrance and memory.
Get your fix of coffee and community spirit On the edge of the red zone is a café that epitomises the rebuilding and reconsolidating spirit of Christchurch; despite having been devastated by the earthquakes, C1 Espresso café throws its energy into not only pulling itself back up, but also helping others to find their feet and fostering community spirit. Loved by the local community and visitors to Christchurch, the licensed café serves up its pioneering espresso and big breakfasts from early in the morning till late at night, seven days a week. It’s not just the coffee and food that has people returning, it’s the whole atmosphere of the café, which sports environmentally-conscious fittings and supports ethically-sourced food.
Things toHot See & Do What’s Solar panels generate electricity, the tables are made from timber recycled from the old C1 building, the toilet cisterns re-use the hand-basin water run off, and heat generated by the kitchen and coffee roaster are pumped through floor grates to keep the highceilinged café nice and cosy. C1 also has a deep commitment to fairtrade, and aside from using organic coffee beans sourced from Samoa, the café also has its own brand of soft drinks, fruit juices and 37 teas, all made locally in Christchurch. C1 is housed in heritage High Street Post Office – a suitably stylish art deco building – which also plays host to two other well-loved Christchurch businesses; Alice in Videoland (a video and DVD library where every film stocked is hand-picked by people who love and live films) and a 38-seat art-house movie theatre. C1, 185 High Street (Corner of High & Tuam Streets), Christchurch. Phone 379 1917

Driving in NZ
For detailed information on the New Zealand road code, the official guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations. Road Rules In New Zealand, the common legal age to rent a car or mobile home is 21 years. You must be able to show a current driving licence and/or an international licence. New Zealand drives on the left so remember to KEEP LEFT at all times. When turning right, you must give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads, T-intersections and driveways where both vehicles are facing each other with no signs or signals, or the same signs or signals. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a car to wear a seatbelt at all times while mobile. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it is hands-free. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffic laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.
Tips for Safe Driving Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care not to exceed the signed speed limits as fines can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor. If you notice traffic building up behind you, pull over at a rest area to let it pass. Be extra careful when rejoining traffic and keep to the left. Winding roads, difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200-300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions. Ensure you are at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front. There are around 1,500 public railway level crossings in New Zealand, only half of which are protected by flashing lights and bells or barrier arms. The remaining crossings are protected by Railway Crossing and Give Way or Stop signs. When you see these signs at a crossing, always stop when red lights are flashing and if there are no lights, obey the warning signs, look carefully for trains and only cross the track if there are no trains approaching.
Driving in NZ
53
Traffic Signals Red, orange and green traffic lights are universally understood, you cannot turn left when the stop light at an intersection is red.
Alcohol Don’t drink and drive. The legal limit is 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. For 20 and under it is ZERO tolerance. Random breath tests are done throughout the country and are compulsory.
Seat Belts It is law that all vehicle occupants must wear their seatbelts. If you get caught not wearing your seatbelt you will be fined. Campervan Hire

Greymouth Set deep within Canterbury’s Southern Alps, Arthur’s Pass has an unmistakable mountain feel. Roaring waterfalls, deep ravines, snowcapped peaks that dwarf the valley, glaciers, craggy rock faces and braided rivers all combine in this spectacular National Park. Mountains for miles Arthur’s Pass offers challenges to the serious mountaineer, and its steep country and network of backcountry huts is a haven for hikers. In winter, Temple Basin provides exceptional skiing. Short walks of 1-2 hours take you into magnificent terrain and afford spectacular mountain views. Especially the dramatic Devil’s Punchbowl waterfall. Strong shoes are essential, as well as jackets; even in summer the weather can change without warning. Kiwi live in the Park, though you’re unlikely to see them, and there’s abundant bird life, including bellbirds and fantails. Look out for the kea - the cheeky, green mountain parrot soaring above you that loves to peck anything you leave around! Queenstown Greenstone and Gold European explorers learnt of the pass from maori who crossed it to trade pounamu – greenstone – from Westland to Canterbury. Early pioneers built the road in less than a year when the West Coast gold rush struck. Today, the treasures of the Pass are found in its natural beauty. Lake Paringa

Named after James MacKenzie, a 19th N century sheep rustler, the MacKenzie Country fills Canterbury’s southwest corner, and lies in the shadow of Aoraki/Mt Cook and the giants of the Southern Alps. The region is the hydro powerhouse of New Zealand. Aeons ago, glaciers carved their Oamaru way across the land, littering it with lakes and rivers as they retreated. Today, a system of canals, designed and built in the seventies, links these lakes and dams creating energy that fuels New Zealand. The MacKenzie Country is staggering in its scale and grandeur. To appreciate its full extent, experience it from the air in a scenic DUNEDIN flight around Aoraki/Mt Cook. Aoraki means ‘cloud piercer’ and at 3754m, the Maori title is perfect for New Zealand’s tallest mountain. For those wanting to get to grips with nature, there are limitless opportunities. Mt Cook national park offers the entire range Gore of alpine activity – mountaineering, glacier exploration and tramping, heli-skiing and ski-touring, including guided skiing on the Tasman glacier. Invercargill And the MacKenzie Country towns of Fairlie, Tekapo and Twizel provide the base for many for every fitness level. The region’s S T R Amore IT X U A VE FO lakes offer windsurfing, sailing and superb fishing, while on land you’ll find mountain and heli-biking, rock climbing and hiking. The area is also world renowned as a gliding STEWART ISLAND destination where many world records have been set. Everyone will marvel at the breathtaking scenery at every turn, the surreal turquoise of Lake Tekapo and Pukaki, and enjoy the region’s friendly welcome. 79
