Haere Mai Welcome to Queenstown – New Zealand’s Adventure Capital. Overlooking Lake Wakatipu and backed by towering mountains, this sophisticated alpine resort has plenty to see and do. Keep your copy of What’s On close at hand as it contains an events calendar, easy to use vouchers, maps, and information to help with accommodation, shopping, dining and transport and plenty of great ideas for activities and sightseeing. Enjoy your stay and get ready to play hard in this magnificent region.

Queenstown & Southern Lakes at a Glance The beauty of this exceptional area will take your breath away, and if it doesn’t, the adrenalin-rush activities certainly will! Queenstown enjoys the best of both worlds: sitting on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, beneath the towering peaks of The Remarkables mountain range. This beautiful resort town offers year-round activities in an environment of dazzling beauty. In winter, skiers from all over the world enjoy the excellent facilities at both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. Snow shoeing, dog sledding and ice skating are also lots of fun. Wanaka is a paradise for thrill seekers or a place to kick back and relax by a roaring fire and enjoy the fantastic views.

For those who prefer adrenalin there’s jetboating, rafting, canyoning, trout fishing, gold-panning and sledging adventures; plus rock climbing and hang-gliding. It’s also the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, with superb hunting, fishing, tramping and mountaineering on offer. Don’t miss a visit to the beautifully restored goldmining settlement of Arrowtown where you can browse the many shops and cafes or learn more about the area’s history. Further afield, enjoy Fiordland’s rugged seascapes and marvel at Milford Sound with the glaciated sides of the 1692m Mitre Peak. Use this booklet as your guide; take your time and take lots of photos!

Night Skiing

In the Spotlight

Experience the magic of night skiing at Coronet Peak and bring your family and friends for an evening of skiing under the stars – it’s an amazing way to enjoy the mountain with the twinkling lights of the valley below. So why go home at 4pm when you can ski or snow board under lights until 9pm. Coronet Peak is the only ski area in the region that offers night skiing on a Friday and Saturday night. The M1, Shirtfront, Big Easy trails and some beginner areas are all open and fully floodlit from 4pm to 9pm allowing skiers and riders of all levels to experience the thrill and incredible beauty of Night Skiing. At the base building the restaurant and bar stay open and the rental department is also open to rent skis, snowboards, boots and clothing if required. Night skiing is very popular with locals and provides a great opportunity for a family to have a night out together. Head up around 4pm, ski or board until dinner time and then hit the slopes again before heading home. It’s a whole different atmosphere at night – skiing under the stars then enjoying music and hot mulled wine on the deck, all with views over a sparkling valley.

New in 2013 is the opportunity to dine over at Heidi’s Hut on a Friday night. Heidi’s Hut is a special hideaway located at the bottom of the Rocky Gully T-Bar. Skiing to Heidi’s Hut is not permitted but transport from Queenstown is provided in the cost of the evening. For $89 guests can enjoy a six-course Italian degustation meal and that feeling of doing something a touch magical. Bookings are essential.

Snowzone

Whatever you’re looking for in a ski experience, this snowzone has it all; gentle slopes for the beginner, intermediate roller-coaster runs, to adrenalin-tickling half pipes for the more advanced skier, there’s even night-skiing so you can chill in the evening light. There are several resorts offering superb skiing and snowboarding within an hour’s drive of Queenstown. Coronet Peak Ski Area and The Remarkables Ski Area are the closest and ideal for visitors wanting to enjoy Queenstown’s excellent range of accommodation and activities. Slightly further afield, Cardrona Alpine Resort is handy to both Queenstown and nearby Wanaka. Snow-bunnies, families, groups of friends and larger school groups are all catered for. For a unique experience, book a heli-skiing package, where you get to experience the full awe of the scenery, then ski down to lunch, only to be taken by helicopter again to your next run. Conditions can be variable so check current snow and weather forecasts before you head for the mountains.

Lord of the Rings

Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings cast and crew fell in love with the dramatic mountain scenery of this region, and you will too. ”Tolkien’s world was one of the deep hidden valleys, barren wastelands, remote mystical mountains and lush, low valleys” Peter Jackson. The majestic beauty of New Zealand’s adventure capital and the surrounding area fit this imagery perfectly. Whether you are a full enthusiast or have just seen one of the films, it is an amazing opportunity to view some of the key locations used for this epic trilogy. Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu was used as the location for some scenes involving ‘Lothlorien’, home to the Lady of the Forest, Galadriel. The river Kawarau, which flows from Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu to Cromwell, became part of the Great River Anduin, and fans can now raft past the site of Argonath (the Pillar of the Kings). The pillars themselves, of course, were computer-generated.

This area isn’t just about the adventure, so before you overdose on adrenalin take time to toast the region’s natural beauty, refresh yourself after a day of shopping, or unwind after a day of outdoor activity. In Queenstown you won’t have to look far for a great place to quench your thirst; from friendly pubs to popular bistros spilling out onto the pavement, and let’s not forget the sophisticated wine bars where you can settle in for a cosy night and sip the stunning world-class wines that the region has to offer. If you’re a party person, and looking for more party people, then you’ll be pleased to know that Queenstown is often referred to as the party capital. Queenstown’s busy bars and clubs frequently have live music and fantastic drink specials, and you can even join in on a bar crawl, which will take you to the hot spots of the city. You may be used to putting a few ice cubes in your drinks, but why not have your drinks within an ice bar? Rug up and chill out with some mates and make some new friends in an ultra-cool atmosphere of an ice bar. Wherever you go – whether it’s a big night out, or a quiet afternoon in – you’re sure to get a warm welcome and you’ll be wanting to return again and again.

Health & Beauty

Health & Beauty

While Queenstown is known for its endless excitement, it’s also a place to relax and unwind. If you’ve been up on the slopes, or hitting the shopping, ensure you get some time to spend on yourself and revitalise. Queenstown and the surrounding area has plenty of great beauty salons and spas where you can while away an hour or two and get yourself thoroughly pampered. Give yourself a treat and choose from one of the many relaxing and revitalising treatments available; enjoy a facial treatment or invigorating massage, or why not give your tired feet some much-needed attention with a soak and a pedicure. For some total indulgence, lie back and enjoy an aromatic full body polish or a luxurious body wrap. Some salons also have couples treatments available so you and your loved one can enjoy a pampering together. Get your nails done, top up your tan in safety, or give yourself the star treatment for a special occasion with a professional makeup session, waxing, brow shaping or an exfoliating treatment. Whatever treatment – or treatments – you choose, you can be sure you’ll emerge feeling like you’re on cloud nine.

For some total indulgence give yourself the star treatment.

Queenstown Accommodation

Accommodation

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments to friendly backpacker hostels; from bright and buzzy city centre to B&B rooms with a mountain view, or meeting rooms conveniently close to the airport, Queenstown has room for you. Look for the Qualmark star rating system to ascertain how an accommodation property has been independently rated. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication of the standard of facilities. You can also ask to see the room – inspection should be welcome. Hotels generally offer tea/coffee making facilities, a bathroom and an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually offer self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fixed budget, try some of the backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities. Holiday parks are another good alternative, providing cabins or camping in a more peaceful rural setting. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there are plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To find out more, visit jasons.co.nz/queenstown/accommodation.

Arrowtown Exhibits cover the harsh pioneering days of the European Settlers, and the exciting goldrush era. The museum complex includes the town’s original Bank of New Zealand premises, the bank’s stables and the town’s baker’s oven, all built circa 1875. Exhibits are family friendly and hands-on learning is always encouraged. The tree-lined avenues are not only picturesque, but also serve to frame the town’s history. The site of the first gold discovery in the Wakatipu in 1862, the town has managed to retain many of its heritage buildings. Through planning controls and community lobbying, around 60 buildings and features remain. During the goldrush, Chinese miners were invited to the town in an effort to stimulate the flagging economy. Their settlement on the outskirts of town has been turned into a park with some of the buildings remaining intact, while others have been recreated to give the visitor a sense of how the Chinese miners lived.

Wanaka

Wanaka is perfect for those looking for all the splendour of the southern lakes, but with a more relaxed atmosphere than neighbouring Queenstown. The town comes alive in winter though, as it offers easy access to the broadest range of snow activity options of any town in New Zealand. Treble Cone is renowned for the best lift accessed ski terrain in the country, whilst Cardrona Alpine Resort caters well for families and beginners. Wanaka also boasts New Zealand’s only commercial cross-country ski field, and advanced riders can ‘Indy’ all they like at the 100% artificial Snow Park. A great selection of restaurants, cafes and nightlife will leave you spoilt for choice, and for a day off the slopes there’s Puzzling World, fun for all ages, or Paradiso, the world’s comfiest cinema, where the smell of freshly baked brownies will have your mouth watering by intermission.

Wanaka If you have the time then don’t miss the chance to explore the Matukituki Valley, weather permitting, the access point to the spectacular Mount Aspiring National Park and an hour’s drive west of Wanaka. The three to four hour Rob Roy track, is a photographer’s delight, with swing bridges to test your vertigo and jaw-dropping alpine views of the Rob Roy glacier and surrounding mountains. This region’s special features were recognised nationally in 1964 when Mount Aspiring National Park was created, and internationally in 1990, with the establishment of the Te Wähipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. A hub for a number of South Island touring routes, Wanaka can be easily accessed from Christchurch via the MacKenzie country, and is a perfect night stop for anyone visiting Mt Cook, or crossing over the main divide through Haast Pass to the rugged West Coast.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Dunstan, Cromwell has been shaped by gold, fruit and hydro-electricity. From the mid to late 1800s, the town was the main centre for the goldrush areas of Central Otago. Discover this colourful era at the Gold Fields Mining Centre, and at the historic goldmining sites of Bannockburn, Bendigo and Kawarau. During the 1920s, a local irrigation scheme led to the development of the region’s famous stonefruit orchards and its arid climate makes the region unique for cherry and apricot growing, as well as peaches, nectarines and plums. Grapes are also grown now, and the district’s wineries are producing some quality wines which are well worth sampling. In winter, the fresh snow turns the mountains from dark blue to white. It’s a great time of year to enjoy a walk, and the Bannockburn Bridge to Goldfields Mining Centre is probably the best walk through gold mining heritage in the country, according to Terry Emmitt from the Cromwell Promotion Group. “There are large areas of hand-stacked tailings which shows the incredible amount of work required to extract gold,” he says. When you return from the walk, reward yourself with a glass of local wine by a roaring log fire at one of the local pubs.

The walk from Bannockburn Bridge to Goldfields Mining Centre is probably the best walk through gold mining heritage in the country.

Cromwell underwent major transformation in the 1980s when the Clyde Dam power station and Lake Dunstan were constructed. Parts of the old town were flooded and the town centre was relocated. Some of Cromwell’s historic buildings were reconstructed and can be explored at Old Cromwell Town. Old Cromwell Town is also the base for numerous local artists and artisans and is open daily. Have a browse around the museum buildings and visit working artists and shops throughout the area, with options to suit different tastes and budgets. Make sure you spend some time exploring this unique piece of New Zealand’s pioneering past. It’s also worth paying a visit to the Cromwell and Districts Museum and Information Centre, which you’ll find in The Mall. The museum has displays on Cromwell township, family life, the discovery of gold, the Chinese influence, pioneer women, and the history of its bridges and hotels.

Nowhere is New Zealand’s wild beauty displayed to better effect than in Fiordland’s tumbling waterfalls, glacial lakes, remote fiords and towering granite peaks. Fiordland National Park was established in 1952, and covers an area of 1.2 million hectares. Early Maori hunted, fished and gathered pounamu here for hundreds of years, and in 1773 Captain Cook and his crew became the first Europeans to visit Fiordland, spending five weeks in Dusky Sound. Cook’s maps and descriptions soon attracted sealers and whalers to the region, but the sheer steepness of the terrain, the incredible isolation, and the wettest climate in New Zealand deterred all but the hardiest from settlement.

Te Anau The town of Te Anau, located on the shores of the South Island’s largest lake, is the gateway to Fiordland National Park. It makes an ideal base for exploring the region or embarking on your choice of three of New Zealand’s Great Walks – the Milford, Kepler or Routeburn tracks.

From Te Anau it is a short scenic boat ride across the lake to the magical Te Anau Glowworm Caves. Alternatively, take a cruise up the lake to Glade House – the starting point of the Milford Track. Float plane, fixed wing and helicopter rides around Lake Te Anau and Fiordland offer spectacular views of the mountain scenery.

Milford Sound is the sparkling gem in Fiordland’s crown, drawing thousands of visitors each year. For many, the 1692 metre Mitre Peak is a highlight, jutting from the still waters of the sound. It’s 16km from the head of the sound to the open sea and the sheer sides of this drowned glacial valley rise some 1200m above sea level. In 1912 John Grono was the fi rst European to settle in the sound, naming it after Milford Haven in Wales. Day and overnight cruises explore the sound, but make sure you book in advance. En route, you’ll get to see Milford Sound’s dramatic waterfalls, including the Bowen, Fairy, Sutherland and Stirling Falls, as well as the iconic Mitre Peak, Anita Bay and the underwater observatory at Harrison Cove. Day cruises depart from the wharf complex, a short walk from the Mitre Peak Café and carpark. Nature lovers have a real treat in store, with a huge variety of wildlife including native dolphins, seals and penguins, and sea kayaking tours offer another great way of exploring the fiord.

It takes about two and a half hours to drive from Te Anau to Milford. For winter driving, make sure you have chains, and check they fit the vehicle you have rented. You can risk heavy fines for driving without chains, so make sure you are prepared for winter driving conditions.

You’ll get to see Milford Sound’s dramatic waterfalls, including the Bowen, Fairy, Sutherland and Stirling Falls.

Franz Josef

The Franz Josef Glacier was ďŹ rst explored in 1865 by geologist Julius von Haast, who named it after the Austrian emperor. Today the Franz Josef Glacier (Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere, or tears of the avalanche girl) offers visitors the chance to experience the power and awe inspiring beauty of this ever-changing glacial environment, all within easy driving and walking distance from the main highway. A number of short walks in the glacier valley and surrounding area, all providing plenty of opportunities to enjoy the lush New Zealand bush at its pristine best. The visitor centre has a brochure detailing walks. Enjoy an evening bush walk right to the glowworms, or relax in the Glacier Hot Pools after a day at the ice face.
