Jet Boating The Jet Boat was invented in New Zealand’s South Island when a clever Kiwi found a way to make a propellerless boat go at high speeds up-stream and against the flow of the river. This Kiwi innovation was the first adventure tourism product to establish itself in Queenstown way back in 1970. With the number of fantastic waterways to explore in the Southern Lakes, Jet Boating is a thriving activity. There are a range of Jet Boating opportunities available in the region to suit everyone from the more scenic options to the flat out thrills of the world famous Shotover Jet. To book your own jet boating adventure Jet boating options see pages 39-49.

NZONE Skydive A bigger aircraft capable of carrying more passengers means NZONE Skydive can take more thrill-seekers to the skies above Queenstown, improving the experience for customers without increasing effects on neighbours. The award winning tandem skydive operator has recently introduced a Cessna Grand Caravan, known as a ‘Supervan 900’. The plane can carry up to nine tandem jumpers – allowing NZONE to keep groups together during their once-in-a-lifetime experience, and is the quietest and most efficient aircraft available for commercial skydiving. NZONE are celebrating 21 years of skydiving in New Zealand, having jumped over 180,000 passengers to date. With the most comprehensive photo pack in New Zealand (containing CD of photos, DVD video, 25 printed images, 7 personalised postcards, certificate and online access to upload photos to the internet) for lifetime memories. Relive and share the experience anytime, YOU DID IT! See page 41.

Getting Out On The Lake To truly appreciate the sheer scale of Queenstown’s magnificent surroundings, enjoy th expansive view from lake level. Heritage cruises on board TSS Earnslaw steamship to Walter Peak High Country Farm or Lake Cruises are all fantastic options to get out on Lake Wakatipu and add another dimension to your Queenstown experience.

Soon, even the strict Captain begins to admire Maria. Eventually, the Captain and Maria fall in love and are married. Unfortunately, when the Nazis invade their homeland, Austria, the whole family is forced to flee over the alps to escape. Celebrate the start of winter in Queenstown with fireworks, street parties, winter sports, mayhem and fun on and off the mountain. The American Express Queenstown Winter Festival is the biggest winter party in Australasia, if not the Southern Hemisphere. Icons don’t just happen overnight and the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival has been 38 glorious years in the making. Back in 1975 a bunch of locals organised a party to celebrate the onset of winter; races on the mountain and in town, lollies for the kids, beers for the grown-ups, a concert or two and a town-wide ball. News spread quickly and the next year people came from further afield to join the festivities. Since then, the Festival has evolved into 10 days of pure winter fun that celebrates the people, the environment and the arrival of winter in true Queenstown style.

Around Queenstown

Arrowtown looks great in all seasons. Tucked away at the end of a valley, away from the prevailing winds, the town is known for its tranquillity and charm. It is the perfect foil for its busier neighbour, Queenstown. If you want to shop at a leisurely pace, dine at the many cafes or restaurants, take in a movie at a boutique cinema, undertake one of the many walks close to the town or soak up the history at the Lakes District Museum, then Arrowtown is a ‘must visit’. Linger by the river with locally-baked pie or kiwi fish and chips. Arrowtown’s unique museum, established in 1948, presents an authentic picture of early Maori in the Southern Lakes District, exhibits the harsh pioneering days of the European Settlers, and the exciting goldrush era. The museum complex includes the town’s original Bank of New Zealand premises, the bank’s stables and the town’s baker’s oven all built circa 1875. Exhibits are family friendly and hands on learning is always encouraged. Not only are the trees a point of difference for Arrowtown, but also its history. The site of the first gold discovery in the Wakatipu in 1862, the town has managed to retain many of its heritage buildings. Through planning controls and community lobbying, around 60 buildings and features remain. During the goldrush, Chinese miners were invited to the town in an effort to stimulate the flagging economy. Their settlement on the outskirts of town has been turned into a park with some of the buildings remaining intact, while others have been recreated to give the visitor a sense of how the Chinese miners lived. Walking and biking have become increasingly popular with over 15 trails leaving from Arrowtown. These range from 1 hour circuits to all day expeditions – a trail map is available at the Museum.

Nowhere is New Zealand’s wild beauty displayed to better effect, than in Fiordland’s tumbling waterfalls, glacial lakes, remote fiords and towering granite peaks. For an extra special experience, both Real Journeys with the ‘Fiordland Navigator’ and Fiordland Expeditions with the ‘Tutuko’ offer superb overnight cruise options on Doubtful Sound.

Milford Sound

Famous for its breathtaking beauty, sheer peaks and thundering waterfalls, Milford Sound is the gem in Fiordland’s crown, drawing thousands of visitors each year. For many, the much-photographed Mitre Peak is a highlight, jutting from the still waters of the sound. This towering rock face – said to resemble a Bishop’s mitre – is one of Milford Sound’s most famous sights, rising for 1695 metres. Nature lovers have a real treat in store at Milford Sound, with a huge variety of wildlife including native dolphins, seals and penguins. There are plenty of options for exploring the sound’s

serene waters. One of the most popular is a day or overnight cruise, but make sure you book in advance, especially during the busy summer months. Day cruises depart from the wharf complex, a short walk from the Blue Duck Café and Bar. En route, you’ll get to see Milford Sound’s dramatic waterfalls, including the Bowen, Fairy and Stirling Falls, as well as Mitre Peak and the Milford Sound Underwater Observatory at Harrison Cove. Located 10m underwater, this observation gallery looks out over the heart of the fiord, allowing visitors to see fish, sea fans, giant starfish and even the odd seal. Sea kayaking tours are another great way to go exploring, allowing close-up views of the native wildlife and towering Mitre Peak, or take a scenic flight or float plane ride for spectacular aerial views.
