Jason Vandenberg Interview Portfolio 2021

To Whom it May Concern: My enclosed resume will reflect that my most recent accomplishment was successfully defending my thesis to be granted my Master of Architecture from Carleton University in the Spring of 2020. What it does not properly reflect is that architecture and design creativity is truly my passion. I can recall a time in elementary school when a teacher raised a serious question: “what do you want to do with your life?”. On reflection, I reviewed my strengths and interests: mathematics, science, and art. Numbers have always made sense to me and I have always enjoyed creating things. Whether it be a drawing, woodworking, photography or even cooking - I love seeing a small idea become a reality. I’ve always felt a rush when creating something. Whether it be a piece of art, a perfectly captured photo or a delicious culinary dish, it is something which I strive towards regularly. The field of Architecture and Design couples these strengths and interests. My interest in architecture has grown and strengthened overtime. I have always enjoyed the concept of creating something that not only is pleasing in appearance, but one which allows for interaction, to be lived in, entered and walked around; a piece of work which can create so much more than just an appreciation of the artists’ handiwork but also memories and a story. Between the experiences I’ve gained during my time with my previous employer, my education, as well as many years of labour, restaurants, and personal experiences; I thrive in both a team and independent setting. Throughout my years of education; I participated in extra-curricular activities which have given me the social skills that I have been able to bring into my workplace to improve my working habits and relations with both clients and coworkers. My proficiency with learning, understanding, and completing the tasks within my given position and time constraints have gained me the trust and confidence of my superiors. These skills are assets which I will bring to your workplace. I am always interested in taking on a new challenge. Whether it be construction drawings using programs I am unfamiliar with, working with a client through the design and construction of their project, or putting in the hours to meet a deadline. I believe that this makes me an excellent candidate. Thank you for taking the time to view my portfolio. I very much look forward to discussing this position further with you.

Sincerely,

Jason Vandenberg

The client came to Impressions Group Ottawa looking for us to install a semi-inground pool with a composite deck connecting the pool to the house. To stay within the client’s budget, the client wished for a simple, two-tiered deck to access their new pool. After quickly working through the layout of the deck with the client, I began working on the drawings required for the City of Ottawa Construction Permit submission. While creating the drawings for submission, I followed the advisement of the inhouse carpenter, and a third-party Architectural Technologist, to put together all the correct details into my drawing set. Once completed, submitted, and approved, the construction crews were able to smoothly construct the deck using the plans I had created. The project was completed within the client’s budget in August 2020.

Expandable Farmhouse Dining Table Professional Project Project completed July 2021 The client contacted us at RoBeau Design Co, with an interesting inquiry. They informed me how they had just undergone a renovation of their older farmhouse. They had replaced all of the old wooden floors, which turned out to be 1.5” thick Pine floorboards. The client asked if I could transform these floorboards into a new expanding dining room table where they could have the entire family sit at during the holidays. After hours of sifting through the available floorboards, removing old nails, and planing the floorboards into usable material, I cut everything down and began constructing the tabletop.

5

By laminating several boards together, I created a modern farmhouse style tabletop. By creating a lip at the edge of the table, it created a space where the hardware of the table could be hidden. With the table sanded smooth, stained, and sealed, the finished table was delivered to the client.

Residential Pool Bar Project Professional Project Project Completed July 2021 When this client first came to Impressions Group Ottawa, they knew they wanted a pool and the ultimate relaxation destination for all their friends and family. The biggest issue with the site was that where they wanted to place the pool only had a foot of soil before bed rock. To create the ultimate hangout spot for the client, we worked out the idea to build a large retained spaced which a pool will be built into. The final elevation of the top of the pool deck was designed to become a bar top counter where people could sit bar side with the people in the pool.

Children’s Mud Kitchen Professional Project 19 kitchens completed From March to July

This is a project which we created when a client came to RoBeau Design Co wanting a Montessori toy for their children. A common toy seen at daycares and Montessori schools; we knew this project would be popular with many other parents. After looking at what other woodworkers were creating, I wanted to create a design which was both modern and light, while still being study enough to withstand vigorous child’s play. To date we have built 19 Mud Kitchens and we are constantly sent images and videos of our client’s children enjoying their kitchens in any which way their imagination goes.

Professional Project Construction Scheduled for October 2021 This client came to Impressions Group Ottawa looking to have their entire property designed and landscaped with a new pool, patio, and pergola. Being a property within the Rockcliffe Park Heritage Conservation District, the new design must be determined by the City of Ottawa’s Heritage Department to honor the style of the area. After much back and forth with Heritage, the scope of the project increased from just a pool and patio to an entire property overhaul. The focus of Heritage was to increase the amount and quality of garden spaces on the property to better fit within the traditional garden-scape history of Rockcliffe park. This was accomplished by adding two large garden beds into the front yard, converting proposed hardscaped pathways into steppingstone pathways, adding a tiered retaining wall system between the pool and the driveway to accommodate additional garden spaces, and using small garden spaces to help define different spaces within the patio. With these additional garden spaces Heritage provided their approval for the project. Buena Vista Rd

This client came to Impressions Group Ottawa looking for a pool install. This was an interesting project to design as the client was disabled due to an accident which occurred during their time in the military. This disability caused the client to have difficulties with their vision regarding depth of field, as well as their motor skills were hampered. The client’s design requirements consisted of blending modern farmhouse with Scandinavian spa design, as well as a consideration for their disabilities. The resulting design focused in on warm colours, wooden features, black hardware, and a definition of spaces. By creating several textural changes, using planting beds to allow for plants to create greater visual and physical definition of spaces and creating actual separation of spaces, I was able to create a backyard space which was considerate of the clients’ disabilities while achieving the aesthetic style they asked for.

Selection of Furniture designs Professional Project Variety of constructed and unconstructed projects

23

As many of the projects which I create as a woodworker for RoBeau Design Co are custom projects, whenever a new client requests a quote, I must create a design to properly quote them. I begin by collecting as much information regarding dimensions, style and functionality for the furniture piece. Taking this information, I create a design, paying attention to the construction technique to not only ensure that I know how to construct the piece if the client decides to go forward with it, but more importantly to know how to properly quote the project. The images I have provided are a selection of renders I created to show the client the furniture’s design concept and even some options which the client can choose from.

Thesis Canopies and Catwalks An Architectural Intervension of the calgary Stampede Academic Project

25

When the Stampede Grounds were prepared for the 1988 games, it was done so with consideration to the societal values present during the 1980s. One of the most influential advancements of technology in the twentieth century was the popularization of the motorized vehicle. Within the discourse of twentieth century public architecture, it is virtually impossible to ignore the effects the car had on the built environment. The Calgary Stampede Grounds are no exception to this. As we near the completion of the first quarter of the twentyfirst century, we are beginning to see societal values shift. No longer are the days where cars are celebrated on mass. These outdated ideas combined with the sites lack of programmatic variation has caused the Stampede Grounds to become an island within Calgary. The site 208-acre site is virtually abandoned outside of hosted events. I argue that it is a derelict site where concrete and asphalt reign supreme, where the car is celebrated and where people are inconsequential. The hardness of the site is uninviting to its visitors, as it lacks color, organic life and any reason to spend time on site outside of events. My thesis proposes architectural pieces which reconnect the site to the city. My design densifies the site with programmatic elements that cater to individuals’ everyday activities such as restaurants, cafes, recreation, walking, shopping, and meeting up with friends. My design revitalizes the site by using landscape and pavilion design to soften the hardness of the site. This will create a space that can stand as a daily destination for Calgarians, while continuing to be capable of hosting large events.

My proposed design achieves this through Canopies and Catwalks, benches and bleachers, restaurants and runners. 28

There is over 1 million people within Canada who currently live with partial to no sight. For those with vision loss a very useful solution for navigating their urban environments is guide dogs. However, the process of getting a guide dog is long, expensive and filled with risk. Guide dogs not only require two years of extensive training with a price tag of upwards of $60,000 in costs, the pairing process between dog and owner is also only a 45% success rate . Architecture engages our senses, particularly vision, but the blind and visually impaired navigate and understand architecture through their other senses. This studio engaged imaginative and non-visual solutions for blind way finding in buildings. One of the major difficulties in navigating unfamiliar environments for the blind and visually impaired is lack of orientation. This studio asked how other senses can be engaged to provide orientation and way finding solutions within buildings?

Tactile and audible vibrations act as the way finding system within the seeing-eye-dog training facility and park. The flooring on the main circulation path is constructed with metal bars so that occupants can feel the vibrations of people walking past. The main hallways of the facility are lined with an audible railing system. Behind the railings, wire is strung like a guitar across chambers in the wall which people can strum as they walk. Different tones designate the different programs of the building. The staircases are suspended with wire and use the same system of sound designation to identify which floor a person is on. On the exterior, a path starting at the corner of Bank and Clemow cuts through the building and extends into the park. Wire wraps around the exterior of the buildings and is anchored at the edge of this path, creating a tactile and audible wall that guides the public. This wall system is reproduced on a smaller scale at the entrances to t he park, creating audible cues for orienting oneself within the landscape. The facility’s windows are extruded to tension the wires which encapsulate the building creating ‘frets’ to produce variations in the sounds emitted. Similarly to the interior of the building, these different tones help designate the program on the interior of the building. Adding this difference of tone to the exterior of the building allows this non-visual cue of program to be heard from the park and street, creating an audible beacon within Ottawa’s Glebe.
