Masters of Architecture Student
INTERVIEW
Portfolio
To whom it may concerned: My enclosed resume will reflect that I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton University in 2017 and that I am currently in the second year of my Masters of Architecture degree, also at Carleton University. What it may not properly reflect is that architecture is my passion and has been since I was in adolescence. My teacher in 8th Grade first raised the question of what I wanted to do in the future as part of a class project. On reflection, I reviewed my strengths and interests: mathematics, science and art. Numbers have always simply made sense to me. As for art, I have always loved creating things, whether it be drawing, woodworking, photography or even cooking. I love being able to look at something and feel proud of the fact that I created it whether it be a piece of art, a perfectly captured photo or delicious culinary dish. For the fact that the field of Architecture blends these strengths, I learned early on that this was what I wanted to do in the future. My interest in architecture has grown and strengthened since then. I love the concept of creating something that not only is pleasing in appearance, but one which allows for interaction, be lived in, entered and walked around; a piece of work which can create so much more than just an appreciation of the artist’s handiwork. Between the experiences I’ve gained from school as well as many years of labour, restaurant and personal experiences I have excellent team skills, a growing understanding of design and self-driven work ethic During high school and throughout university I have participated in extra-curricular activities which have given me social skills that I have been able to bring into my workplace to improve my working habits and relations with clients and coworkers. My proficiency with learning, understanding and completing the tasks within my given position have gained me the trust and confidence of my superiors. These skills are assets which I can and will bring to your workplace. I am always interested in taking on a new challenge. Whether it be construction drawings using programs I am familiar or unfamiliar with, helping with a presentation, or putting in the hours for a deadline. I believe that this makes me an excellent candidate. Thank you for taking the time to view my portfolio; I very much look forward to discussing this position further with you. Sincerely,
Jason Vandenberg

Design Process
Organization strategy placed into site Aligned building design to Somerset Opened building design to allow for as a building design st W main entrance at the corner od Somersete and Bayswater
Moved “brain” of the building towards Created single North-West facade to main entrance align building with Wellington St W
Chamfered sharp coreners of triangle design to soften appearance and create a better use of space
Pierced “brain” of building with Add a pitched roof to help guide eyes Use geometric shape to scult floors bridges to connect the three wings of and to help fit the building into the and envelope to create a visual the building community contrast between public and private
Better the relationships between different floors by exaggerating geometric angles and adjusting floor plates
Finish sculting the building by adding geometric tesselation onto the roof which blankets the whole building

Masters
This project, located at the corner of Somerset St W and Bayswater Ave, is a campus for professionals, students and knowledge seekers alike. The building contains what is being described as a “creative brain,” which houses a forum space and a space for people to meet and collaborate. Surrounding this “brain” are the studios, classrooms and workshops. The connection between brain and peripheral spaces symbolizes the need of creativity and open discourse in the learning and making process. To help orient this structure into the community the buildings roof is pitched towards the North end of the site. This allows your eyes to smoothly transition from this building to the adjacent two storey buildings within the community when approaching from Somerset St W towards Wellington St W. Approaching this building from the opposite direction, on Somerset St W towards Bayswater Ave, will allow your eyes to follow the pitch of the building towards the future tall towers being developed in the Lebreton Flats. This pitch roof helps cement the building into the community while also connecting it to the larger urban landscape within Ottawa.
