Jason Vandenberg SnapShot Portfolio 2021
To Whom it May Concern: My enclosed resume will reflect that my most recent accomplishment was successfully defending my thesis to be granted my Master of Architecture from Carleton University in the Spring of 2020. What it does not properly reflect is that architecture and design creativity is truly my passion. I can recall a time in elementary school when a teacher raised a serious question: “what do you want to do with your life?”. On reflection, I reviewed my strengths and interests: mathematics, science, and art. Numbers have always made sense to me and I have always enjoyed creating things. Whether it be a drawing, woodworking, photography or even cooking - I love seeing a small idea become a reality. I’ve always felt a rush when creating something. Whether it be a piece of art, a perfectly captured photo or a delicious culinary dish, it is something which I strive towards regularly. The field of Architecture and Design couples these strengths and interests. My interest in architecture has grown and strengthened overtime. I have always enjoyed the concept of creating something that not only is pleasing in appearance, but one which allows for interaction, to be lived in, entered and walked around; a piece of work which can create so much more than just an appreciation of the artists’ handiwork but also memories and a story. Between the experiences I’ve gained during my time with my previous employer, my education, as well as many years of labour, restaurants, and personal experiences; I thrive in both a team and independent setting. Throughout my years of education; I participated in extra-curricular activities which have given me the social skills that I have been able to bring into my workplace to improve my working habits and relations with both clients and coworkers. My proficiency with learning, understanding, and completing the tasks within my given position and time constraints have gained me the trust and confidence of my superiors. These skills are assets which I will bring to your workplace. I am always interested in taking on a new challenge. Whether it be construction drawings using programs I am unfamiliar with, working with a client through the design and construction of their project, or putting in the hours to meet a deadline. I believe that this makes me an excellent candidate. Thank you for taking the time to view my portfolio. I very much look forward to discussing this position further with you.
Sincerely,
Jason Vandenberg

When this client first came to Impressions Group Ottawa, they knew they wanted a pool and the ultimate relaxation destination for all their friends and family. The biggest issue with the site was that where they wanted to place the pool only had a foot of soil before bed rock. To create the ultimate hangout spot for the client, we worked out the idea to build a large retained spaced which a pool will be built into. The final elevation of the top of the pool deck was designed to become a bar top counter where people could sit bar side with the people in the pool. My involvement in the project consisted of all the detailed construction drawings, sections and elevations required to properly construct everything as per the design concept.

Children’s Mud Kitchen Professional Project 19 kitchens completed From March to July
This is a project which we created when a client came to RoBeau Design Co wanting a Montessori toy for their children. A common toy seen at daycares and Montessori schools; we knew this project would be popular with many other parents. After looking at what other woodworkers were creating, I wanted to create a design which was both modern and light, while still being study enough to withstand vigorous child’s play. To date we have built 19 Mud Kitchens and we are constantly sent images and videos of our client’s children enjoying their kitchens in any which way their imagination goes.
Wired Academic Project
There is over 1 million people within Canada who currently live with partial to no sight. For those with vision loss a very useful solution for navigating their urban environments is guide dogs. However, the process of getting a guide dog is long, expensive and filled with risk. Guide dogs not only require two years of extensive training with a price tag of upwards of $60,000 in costs, the pairing process between dog and owner is also only a 45% success rate . Architecture engages our senses, particularly vision, but the blind and visually impaired navigate and understand architecture through their other senses. This studio engaged imaginative and non-visual solutions for blind way finding in buildings. One of the major difficulties in navigating unfamiliar environments for the blind and visually impaired is lack of orientation. This studio asked how other senses can be engaged to provide orientation and way finding solutions within buildings?
Seeing Eye Dog Training Facility
Housing for those going through the pairing process Housing for 20 dogs that goes past just kennels Dog grooming and care facilities Small gym with lap pool Dog exercise and training area Veterinary clinic Nurses station Haptic way-finding strategy Laundry facility Public washrooms Tactile and audible vibrations act as the way finding system within the seeing-eye-dog training facility and park. The flooring on the main circulation path is constructed with metal bars so that occupants can feel the vibrations of people walking past. The main hallways of the facility are lined with an audible railing system. This railing system is strung like a guitar across chambers in the wall. People can strum this system as they walk. Different tones designate the different programs of the building. Using these different tones users can differentiate from the various rooms and floors. This use of tactile and audible vibrations create an architecture freindly to the visually impared. This creates a space which hopes to help ease the visually impared during the potential stresses of the seeing eye dog pairing process.
