LAYERED

SELECTED PROJECTS

year:

location:

task:

2013 Ghent, Nederkouter an action in redundancy

“We were captured by a small place in the middle of the city - totally visible for everyone but still unknown for the most. That was what that fascinated us. Some people know about it from a distance, but it still kept its secrets and myths behind its walls. So we started to observe. To feel.To smell. To experience. To listen. We found more similar spaces behind the wall along the Leie. We saw different layers. We were trying to read the history. Trying to capture the atmosphere. Always trying to listen what the place tells us. We went there again and again. Experienced the different caves. Observed it from different angles. Touched different materials. Different atmospheres. Different histories. Different layers. With the time we were aware what the place offered and were trying to find a way to respect it. We wanted to show what is behind that wall. Make the layers visible. Accessible. Connected. The inside. The outside. People. Atmosphere. Landscape. Respect what is there. Use what it offers. Create something for people but not for everybody. Keep the treasure. Keep it clean and simple. Keep it special. We decided to connect the neighbours and make it theirs. Everyone gives and takes. Everyone can enjoy and explore. Everyone can be part of the whole. Physically we are adding a few stairs, a platform, some trees, … creating access, connecting spaces … But these additions become more than just the connections between the existing, they become space. Meeting, playing, relaxing. It is about adding a new layer to the history. A layer of today. With people.”

ZERO IMPACT BUILDING

SELECTED PROJECTS

year:

location:

task:

2013 Ghent, Rabot designing, calculating and detailling of a zero impact building

“When receiving the task to develop a building that has zero impact in all possible aspects, we decided to grab the chance and finally design a simple house. The idea was to transform typical ‘garage plots’ that tend to be found all over the city. No extra footprint is needed and to existing plots force us to design on a very modest amount of square meters. The idea of kangarou living gets implemented to gain density and take profit of its social and economic factors. On the spatial level two vertical penetrations form the heart of the project. The function as smart ventilation system, bufferzone, interconnect spaces and bring daylight inside. Furthermore we focussed on the re-use of available materials simplicity in building. Phpp-calculations and extensive detailling took this project quite far into reality.”

SELECTED PROJECTS

year:

location:

task:

2012 Mechelen, Tinelsite Youth house and Tinelsite masterplan

“There is too much division. The Tinelsite has already an interesting list of different functions. This is a good thing because the diversity will make the place an at-all-time living space which attracts a wide public from the neighbourhood, Mechelen, and even much further. But these different functions, all with their own specific programs are totally split up right now. They don’t take profit of each other and just try to make sure not to bother ‘the other one’. This situation is a perfect mirroring of what’s happening between the different cultures nowadays. The Moroccan community and the Belgian are both living in the same city. They’re both there, without really knowing each other. The one is not against the other, but there is some tension because of this unknown factor. They’re not really looking at each other, just try to survive on the same plot. Take profit of the other! The one can use functions of the other, the two well start to know each other and this will spice each other up. All this without being ignorant to the need there still is for some actors and functions to have their own part were they feel safe. No need the wake up the sleepy ones.”

LIBRARY FOR DEAF CHILDREN

SELECTED PROJECTS

year:

location:

task:

2012 Muyinga, Burundi designing and building coordination of a library, pilot project for the school for deaf children in Muyinga

“During summer 2012, I’ve spent two months in east-Africa. Main purpous was to join the team of Brussels Cooperation Architects & Studies with the designing and organising the building of a library. This library is the pilot project for a school for deaf children, built in Muyinga, Burundi. A main focus went into the use of locally available and environmental materials. The use of CEB’s compressed earth bricks with earth from the site formed a challenging but very rewarding solution. The experience was unforgetable. Seeing this building growing from foundation till roof. Search local solutions in a very primitive economic environment. Produce all the used materials from source till finished product.”

SELECTED PROJECTS

year:

task:

2013 Ghent, citadelparc designing and building coordination of a pavilion

“The 100-year memorial of the worldexpo Ghent needed it’s own contemporary version. The idea, developed by the cultural service of Ghent, was to create a ‘kidsworldexpo’, develop by and for children. I worked together with a primary school to design their pavilion through some workshops. And with the city to get it built. Sidefactor was the focus on recyclable materials, cheap and able to construct and destroy quickly.”

Kleur blauw of zwart. De kwaliteit van deze tie-wraps is enorm belangrijk. Ook dienen ze lang genoeg te zijn om in één keer twee bakken aaneen te hangen. Kleur liefst blauw of zwart.

tie=wraps: heel veel (7500?)

FURNITURE DESIGN

SELECTED PROJECTS

year:

location:

task:

2011 Istanbul experimenting within the world of furniture design

“While studying in Istanbul, I took the change explore a smaller scale design then I was used. Designing different types of furniture, it was a pleasure. It’s an eyeopener towards ergonomy, applying specific materials and production techniques. Furthermore I was lucky enough to work together with a local carpenter that transformed one design into a real object. An experience that would be further developed within the Muyinga library project.”

BUILDING COMMUNITY COMMUNITY BUILDING

SELECTED PROJECTS

year:

location:

task:

2012 Ghent, Ketelvest rethink an existing office building in the centre of ghent

“The task for my bachelor project was to rethink an existing office building in the centre of ghent. It’s a huge monster, 25000m² floor area above the ground, spread over 4 levels and an additional 12500m² underground. The building is seen as a hightech favela, where the future inhabitant takes a plot and builds with his own force the necessary facilities. Next to the very personal space-development there as a wider base of collective areas to make sure all inhabitants have the offer of big and high quality spaces. Centrally there is a building hall; a building education/event hall with additional functions, this is the germ of the project. Here the technical input for the building process is given but at the same time its multidisciplinary usable for both the community as external people.”

PARAMETRIC EXPERIMENTS year:

task: software: hardware:

2012 rethink an existing office building in the centre of ghent rhino+grasshopper (industrial) lasercutter for steel sheets

“The aim of this project was focused on the research of parametrical modelling. Parallel to this the possibility to produce it out of sheet material. It’s a form and material research without striving for a usability or a specified scale. This resulted in a process where we adapted a digital 2d-file, and build up the physical version in 3d to see how it results. An important factor was also the material characteristics, as it is a bended structure which is holding itself with these forces.”

PUBLICATIONS (in)formation Eva Gheysen post script on the project (IN)FORMATION issuu.com/jaspervanderlinden/docs/magazine_170x140_kalk_included (68p)

“This booklet is a post script on the project (IN)FORMATION, built in Burundi from May until October 2012. The booklet is written and published by Eva Gheysen and Jasper Van der Linden, interns at Brussels Cooperation and master students from Sint-Lucas University Brussels/Ghent. With an internship from VLIR UOS, the two Belgian students were able to participate in the project during two months in Burundi. This written work is an extension of the participation on site and together it stands for the content of the elective course “participation in an international project”. The booklet is considered as an after-reading of the project, from general outlines to the details. However the less, the publication could as well be regarded as a tool to inform external parties in earth architecture, building across borders and participatory projects in architecture.”

- INFORM ALL ABOUT INFORMAL ARCHITECTURE -

“(...) Can you consider an architect that develops an economic model for some local community as an architect? And reversed; would you categorize a homeless who’s building a roof above his head an architect? This number concentrates on the architect that not only focuses on the exuberant but gets influenced through the crisis direction the ‘basics’. And parallel to that the non-architect that wants to fulfill its own needs and therefor takes over the role of the architect. Let it be alone or as a community. (...)”
